I run in a couple styles of Nikes and the only one I had to go up on for half a size was a specific model. If you are buying them through the Nike website you can read the comments to see if model you want runs small.3 -
@skippygirlsmom sorry for all your stress and 'hangryness'. I get that way too. Hope you get adjusted to the calorie deficit soon. If not, I would up it a couple hundred and see if that helps.
@RunsOnEspresso glad your pain subsided and hope it stays away.
@polskagirl01 you can't stop running in the forest. We would all miss out on your adventurous stories2 -
@skippygirlsmom I so hear you on that elusive balance of the right amount of nutrition - I almost always am overdoing it one way or the other. Neither extreme helps get rid of extra weight. And under-fueling also makes me very grumpy. Sigh.@polskagirl01 you can't stop running in the forest. We would all miss out on your adventurous stories

So, I am still here, but quiet, confused, depressed, feeling a little lost. Just when I think, "I got this" someone changes the rules, plans and just end up treading water. Each day I wonder/wander what is happening and where am I going?

Thanks! Not sure why I didn't look at reviews 🤦🏼♀️ Nike says true to size but most reviews say they run small and go up half a size.1 -
6 hot and sweaty miles. It felt good though, and the run part of the run/walk intervals are ever increasing. That's 54 miles for the month, just 6 more to hit my goal.
Tomorrow morning looks promising for a run in the rain. Keeping my fingers crossed!7 -
@skippygirlsmom sorry to hear about your car issues - I found out I need a couple thousand worth of repairs also. So not what I wanted to hear right now. Hopefully finding a better balance with your calories will help you out. It's hard for sure. Good job on getting your half done for August. Looks like we did them the same weekend again.
@AlphaHowls big hugs to you. I'm sorry you are feeling down and lost. You are so strong, Be kind to yourself and take care of yourself.

No run again yesterday. Today was not looking great as I got out of work later than I hoped and needed to be at the gym for strength training. I took Stella out with me because she also needed a walk, so I did a slow run for a little out and back in the woods with her for 1.6 miles. Then I went to the gym and got on the treadmill to add a little more before class.
The monthly total is not looking good. I am super busy at work this week and next, and I've got another big hike planned this weekend so it's not looking good for much mileage before the end of the month. I'm trying to be at peace with the fact that this year/summer is not about running miles.7 -
@kgirlhart I think that was a great run in those conditions. Hopefully your next run will be a lot better and help get your confidence back.
@rheddmobile That heat is horrible! I thought it was hot here. Nothing like that. I didn't realize that pecans and walnuts were hickory either. I have lots of walnut trees in my woods and other hickories too. So, I learned something also.
@Scott6255 Your HR was really good. Sorry your legs didn't get the memo. Congrats on making 100 miles already this month and a year of 100 miles/month. That's awesome.
@skippygirlsmom Hope you figure out the nutritional balance and are feeling better today. Nice on getting your HM in over the weekend.
@RunsOnEspresso Glad you got your run in with no pain! Hope it stays that way.
@polskagirl01 I don't think I've ever actually had a spider on my face, but I have imagined they are there after running into a web.
@WhatMeRunning Hahaha I've been known to drip sweat from a fast walk too, definitely worse when I run in it though.
Sounds like a wonderful weekend @7lenny7 ! Nice run today. Yes, my driveway is a quarter of a mile long. When I do laps, I usually go a little bit past half way, because that last portion is a steeper hill I don't feel like climbing every lap. My laps end up being a little over 0.3 miles. It is lined with trees, so when it is really hot and sunny, it is at least in the shade. But, because I still do two hills, it makes me slower than when I run out the local road - which is hilly, but not that bad. I do a lot of walking up those hills during my runs....but, they are perfect for hill repeats.
@AlphaHowls Sorry you are having such a hard time right now. I hate it when I feel like I am floundering around with no direction. I hope things calm down for you soon. Thanks for the idea about the KY HM. I'm tempted, but I think I had decided to run the AF HM virtually. I really want it to be my first one and, if I ran it virtually in conjunction with another one, would it really be the first?
@katharmonic You are doing so much hiking, you shouldn't worry about your monthly total. It's not like you are slacking or anything!

I'm with some of the rest of you and am not going to be even close to making my monthly goal. Part of that is because I miscalculated - counting running on Friday's which I normally don't do. Oh well. I'm sticking with my HM plan pretty well. Having said that, I was supposed to do a tempo run today. I had way too much other exercise for a run today. Hopefully I can get it in tomorrow. I played singles tennis with a friend this morning. Then, when I got home, I blew the little pieces of hickory nuts off of my porches (from the squirrels having their fall feast), went down and helped trim my mom's lawn by doing the push mowing, came home and mowed my own lawn. When I was getting in the shower, I thought...oh shoot. I didn't do my walk. I sure didn't want to sweat anymore, so I did a mile on the treadmill while watching Wheel of Fortune at a slower than normal pace - 3.5 mph. I was active for 4:55:20 h:mm:ss today! Only burned 1,135 calories. Doesn't quite seem fair, does it?
I was telling the lady I played tennis with about my HM going virtual and thinking about running it on the Tweetsie Trail. She volunteered to take her bike up and bike with my while I run! That should be fun. So, that is my current plan for the HM.9 -
Good morning everyone. Sorry I have been MIA but I started to feel my shoulders and my neck were out of whack. It must have been the fall I took. So I rested for 4 days. I felt good this morning so I decided to get back at it. Today’s plan was a long run for 2 miles. It felt pretty good. When I checked my heart rate my Fitbit measured the high was 191. So the 4 days off kind of messed with my fitness level. I’m sure that I will be back down by the end of this week.

Tomorrow the plan calls for a cross training day. I’ve caught up with all that you guys have been doing the past 4 days. So I’m going to get myself to start commenting on your post from now on. I have a question for you all “Do you just start running right away or do you warm up first before you start running?” I’ve just lately start out with running but I’m feeling that maybe that’s wrong and that I should start out with a 5 minute walk warm up before my run.4 -

Just an idea - That might apply to running shoes in general, so those same people might go up a size no matter what brand shoes they're wearing.2 -
@julieannegannon I usually just run, but will do a warm up or even stretching if I feel I need to. I should do that every time, but I don't.
No running for me today, or maybe for a few weeks again. Foot was definitely feeling worse yesterday and this morning. 😬 I think I'll be OK to maintain the same walking mileage so hoping to not have to slow down really.8 -

Sunny, low 70s F and humid again today. Had my 3 month eval at the chiro today. X-rays showed back, hips, neck, and head position have all improved, so my bones are moving in the right direction.
@AlphaHowls Hang tough.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

I walk about 0.25 mile before starting to run and do a few dynamic warm-ups. The walk is a hold-over from C25k that just became my habit. The warm-ups are ones that I started this past year to help with that stiff, achy few steps that I seemed to get every run. They help a lot and only take a minute or 2.2 -
@WhatMeRunning Sorry to hear your foot felt worse today. Hopefully this will be a minor set back.
@AlphaHowls That sucks. I'm sorry you are going through that right now.
@Tramboman Yay for bones going the right way!
@quilteryoyo I'm so happy for you that you found a friend to bike along for your HM. That will definitely help make it more fun!2 -

Tried to run again after adding calories, ate a pop tart, went out 30 minutes later, still felt like crap. I walked one of the pups, Champ, instead (see picture in spoiler). I think I’m going to eat dinner and then try later tonight and see if works.Nice place to rest on the side of the road this morning
Thanks @WhatMeRunning I try really hard not to stress over things I simply cannot change, the car being one of them. So sorry about the foot. My friend has been in a boot for a month for PF, nothing else worked.
@7lenny7 I think about what will happen after Macy is gone all the time, I love having a dog, but I don’t want to be tied to one, it’s not fair to them. Champ (who is around 3) is Skip’s dog and she will take him wherever she ends up after college…unless she gets a job with a lot of travel, then he will stay with me.
@rheddmobile I always walk my pups early in summer or after dark. I had a stray come to my door yesterday, yes all the strays come to my house LOL. Anyway I heard he might belong on the next street, so I put him on a leash and anywhere he couldn’t stay on the grass I picked him up and carried him. Paws burn fast.
@Scott6255 and @quilteryoyo thanks, it’s frustrating kinda like the speed vs mileage which to do, eat to fuel vs lose weight ha ha.
Way grumpy @polskagirl01
@AlphaHowls hugs. I can relate in many ways to what you are saying. I just said to Skip last night sometimes I feel like I’m doing a cha cha all the time, 2 steps forward and 1 step back. She replied do the math mom, that is still one step forward. God I love that girl. I had to laugh too because I say that all the time “do the math” and “look it’s physics”. Hang in there, you have a huge support system here.
@katharmonic we are virtual running partners ha ha. Thanks for the pep talk, sorry about your car too, what is the deal we are driving them less than usual. I think I felt worse for the girl who had to call me about the car since it was just $2800 2 weeks ago. They gave me some discounts and didn’t charge for diagnostics, etc but what can you do.
@quilteryoyo yay for your friend, that is great.
@juileannegannon I try to do some static stretches and then I walk up my street (maybe .15 miles at a quick pace) then I run.
5 -
@julieanngannon - Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. If I'm meeting people to run, I'm usually the first one there even though I drive the longest distance (I have a deep seated need to be early to everything - lol) so I will do some walking lunges, leg swings, ankle rotations and maybe walk a lap or two around the parking lot. This is much easier done in Spring, Summer and Fall months. In the Winter, it's so much harder to get out of the warm car. If I'm running from home by myself and I have the time, I might do a short stretch video. Some days I just take off, knowing the first mile will be slow and a warm-up. So basically, I know that I should but it doesn't always happen.3
-
@WhatMeRunning Dang it!! Sorry to hear your foot is back to grumbling at you!
@AlphaHowls I'm sorry you are feeling so down. I hope you can find a way to bounce back, because you are such a strong, resilient human!!
@juileannegannon you should always try to do some sort of warm up before running, be it a dynamic warm-up routine or at least some amount of brisk walking to get your body ready for the stress and intensity of running.
5 -
@julieannegannon Glad your body is feeling better after the fall. I'm sure the 4 days rest were needed. Nice run today. As for your question, I do a fast half mile walk for a warm up and do the same thing after the run as a cool down. I should probably do more stretching. Currently, I mostly stretch only if I feel a muscle getting tight.
@WhatMeRunning So sorry to hear that your foot is giving you problems again. I hope it gets to feeling better quicker this time!
@Tramboman Yeah for a great report!
Thanks @martaindale and @skippygirlsmom . I was very happy and surprised that she suggested it. I was sort of dreading doing it alone. This will be so much better.
@skippygirlsmom What did you used to eat before a run? Can you go back to that? I think a pop tart would mess with my blood sugar since I'm not used to eating that. If I have time to wait after I eat, I eat my normal breakfast. If not, I will eat a banana before heading out. I had a piece of peanut butter toast on Saturday. I hope you figure out what works for it. It's hard. I love that Champ found such a cozy place for a break from his walk! Too cute.
2 -
@julieannegannon I usually warm up with easy running or walking, but dynamic warmups (like skips, lunges, butt-kicks, high-knees, side lunges [they have a name, I can't remember] and criss-cross footwork running [also not their real name]) are even better.
@AlphaHowls Hugs. I have those days, too Even running endorphins only go so far...
Today I did lots of housework (stupid comfy soft fluffy carpet that's basically impossible to clean), a little bit of work work, and then went to the track even though all the other girls had excuses (a couple of them were actually good excuses). My son came with me, bringing his soccer ball, but then there was a girls' team using the field. So he occupied himself doing other things. It has actually cooled down and was only misty-raining off and on, and as a result, a lot of runners got out their long sleeves and came out of hiding to come to the track. It didn't make running fast much easier, though! I did 400's - once around the track fast, once around slow, repeat 'til I had at least 5k. I was actually happy with my paces on the fast intervals, but can tell I've been doing other kinds of speedwork (hills mostly) lately.6 -

60.25/100 miles running 24.0/31 miles walking
I made some phone calls about my cousin's situation this morning and was waiting on return calls, so did my run on the treadmill today. I was supposed to run 5 min in Zone 1, 5 min in Zone 2, 18 min in Zone 3, 5 min Zone 2, 5 min Zone 1. What I actually ran/walked was 5/4/1/20/1/4/6:02 minutes at 4.2/4.5/3.9/ladder of 5.0-5.5-5.1 for 2 min each/3.9/4.5/4.2 mph. I never made it into Zone 3, but was in the upper limits of Zone 2, so I'll take that.
I'm going to keep a little bit better track of my resting HR and see if I may need to change some of my medication. I really think that one of the meds is keeping my HR unnaturally low. Today, the run at 4.2 mph was almost all below zone 1 and all was below 125 bpm. That's certainly not normal for me.4 -
@WhatMeRunning I am sorry to hear that your foot is still bothering you.
@Tramboman Glad to hear that your evaluation was good.
@skippygirlsmom Thanks for sharing the picture of Champ. I love dogs but the last dog I had died in 2015 and I couldn’t go through that ever again. Thank you also for the warm up information.
@Teresa502 We are alike. I don’t like being late. I always get to places 20 minutes before the scheduled time I have to be there. Thanks for the information on your warmup routine.
@Scott6255 Thank you for responding about warmups. I’ve been getting the information on dynamic warm ups. I really am a newbie and I don’t know this stuff. Basically I was just an avid walker but now I like the running so I want make sure to try to stay injury free.
@quilteryoyo Thanks for the information on your warm up routine. Being with this running community has helped a lot as to what to do.
@polskagirl Thank you for your warm up routine. I just felt it was was better to warm up before I run. Going from standing to running was just not feeling right.4 -
@julieannegannon Add me to the dynamic stretching / brisk walking group. I stretch particular muscles I have had trouble with, especially rocker squats which stretch calves, shins, feet. No plantar fasciitis or shin splints since I started rocker squats. I also brisk walk about half a mile to let my cardiovascular system wake up.

Another hot one! This heat alert is supposed to last all week. No idea what the local station said at the time but my Strava dealy says heat index was 105. We got out a little earlier but it didn’t make much difference - heat index was 101 at sunset last night and didn’t go down much overnight.
So, I have a race in two weeks. And I haven’t done speedwork in I can’t remember. So today was “hey we haven’t actually died yet, let’s do speedwork under a heat alert with an orange air alert too” day! Needless to say the emphasis was more on “work” than “speed.” Basically we ran a tempo mile with the goal being to remember what it feels like to run instead of plodding, then drank a lot of water while wogging for the rest of 5k, then did 2 x 400m fastish, which at that point was uh, kinda slow. The tempo mile was not that bad, 9:09. Tempo for us used to be about 8:45 so considering the weather that’s in the same ballpark. We did not pass another soul foolish enough to run today, just one old lady sitting at a picnic table overlooking the lake, and a very sweaty nurse from the cardio clinic taking a walk on her lunch break.
We saw a billion butterflies and the path was covered in scuppernongs. I love scuppernongs but all of these were so high I could barely even see where they had fallen from.3 -
@martaindale Thank you for your input on warm ups. It’s much appreciated!
@rheddmobile I have looked up the rocker squats you suggested. I will try to see if I can do them. Being older I find my balance going away but maybe it will help my balance too!1 -
@rheddmobile You did great in that heat! I had to look up scuppernongs. I think we call them muscadines. Did you eat any of them?2

6 miles this morning. Just a little tightness on the hip. Stretched at about mile 4 and helped.

I had to be at work early today which meant running in the evening. I waited for sunset and the heat index was still 100F. Flipside is 55% humidity, which helps a lot. I slowed way down, drank plenty of water, and ran one of the easiest paces I've had in a long time. But because of the heat, my heart rate was still really high even how I never even felt like I was breathing hard. Oh, well. I did it. I have to do it again tomorrow. I'm looking forward to a better work schedule next week!
For some good news, I managed to get my husband to sign up for a HM with me in Feb. He went out for his first run in a while today and is working out his training plan. So glad he's doing this race with me and is back to running!8 -
6 more miles today to meet my August goal of 60. woot! I woke up early to run in the rain. Although I had the downpour I wanted, it was lightning like crazy so I waited and went to work (from home). I finally got out in the afternoon after it was sunny and warming up, though not as hot as yesterday. Recovery day tomorrow.
@martaindale that's awesome that your husband is getting back to running and racing with you!
@WhatMeRunning sorry to hear about your foot. Hopefully it's just a small warning telling you to ease up a bit, and not a full on stop.
@rheddmobile I had to look up scuppernongs too. Great job in that nasty heat! I'll have to look up rocker squats and see what they're all about.
@julieannegannon my warm up consists of a brisk walk followed by a slow run. I used to do about 1/4 mile walk but now coming back from PF issues, I'm doing a 1/2 mile walk. In the winter I under dress so I go right into a run to warm up, but it's a very slow run. I don't believe anyone should be doing any static stretching before a run but it's fine afterwards. Static stretching is not good for cold muscles. You could do dynamic stretches, such as the Myrtl routine, before running though.
@quilteryoyo that's cool to have a such a long, shaded driveway to use for running.
@skippygirlsmom cute pup!

A scuppernong is a bronze-colored variety of muscadine. Unfortunately all the ones I saw on the path had been split open and eaten by birds! This is a little early for them, usually we get them in September.2
