Less Alcohol ~ AUGUST 2021 ~ One Day At A Time
Replies

I am continuing with my usual goal, 16-20 AF days for the month, diary style
Saturday Aug 21 - Drinks - Basically started at noon with boozy coffees. Very tiny amounts of very many things, tried so many combinations. Drizzly day, day off, and tomorrow off too. Had a nice visit with some friends who came over. It was so lovely. I have a tenant starting September 1st, so actually staying inside for a change was very pleasant - I was cognizant that I won't have the place to myself soon. Planning a few AF days soon, had no desire to be AF today.
Sunday Aug 22 - AF - Planned drinks for Thursday eve.
Monday Aug 23 - AF - Worked an evening shift, but day shifts for the next 3 and then 1 day off. Trying to refrain from drinks when I work the next day.
Rolling total: 13AF days out of 23 days5 -

This weekend was the first time I have had lots of energy in a very long time. Possibly a combination of some weight loss, being alcohol-free and low carb most of the month and reducing stress from last year. It will get much easier if I feel like that all the time.9 -
Hello! You do not have to miss out on delicious drinks! I am a group leader for a group all about Mocktails. The name is Mocktails. I research nonalcoholic drinks also known as virgin drinks. I then share the recipes for the drinks. For example, a virgin whiskey is one part Mountain Dew and one part A & W root beer. Tastes just like the real thing! Won't you kindly join the group? I hope to get your reply soon.3

Thanks, but that is not a group for me. My primary reason to limit alcohol is about drinking excessive calories and trying to live low carb/keto. I certainly wouldn't want to substitute a low carb whiskey for sugary Mountain Dew and root beer - I do not drink soda and don't want to start. That might be of interest to others who are doing this with different goals in mind.

@ON_A_DIET you had me at MOCKTAIL, but lost my interest at mountain dew with A&W.
Good luck in your mocktail journey 🍹7 -

My goal for the week is fewer than 1000 calories of alcohol. I plan on saving them up for Friday and Saturday
YOU GO GIRL! Over coming frustrations WITHOUT the use of alcohol is a beautiful thing. 👍9 -
This is the count down to the last week of August.
How are your goals adding up ?
I could have gone right off the deep end yesterday.
A plan to go away for a few days in September which was planned this past April came to a screeching hault when I found out my dog boarding place had my dog on the schedule for the WRONG month. NOW they have no openings for the September dates I am away, for my sweet 14 year ole girl.
Luckily I kept it together yesterday afternoon and diligently kept calling other kennels. Right before bed time I received a call back from someone not to far away. They have an opening for those dates and I am going to go check out their facilities this week, because I don't just plop my pup with anyone.
Another AF night (phew)7 -
@MissMay - I lucked out and my sister agreed to take our dog for the 2 weeks in October ... I was challenged with that decision because 2 weeks in the wrong place just would not do. Good luck! Enjoy your vacation. Where are you headed? Is it an RV road trip?5

@ON_A_DIET - Like @Mellie289 I'm on the less alcohol kick to reduce calories as well as not wake up with a hangover (no sugar hangover too LOL).
But that said I ran across an interesting mocktail that I'm considering trying out. It looks sweet and spicy. Pineapple Jalapeño Mockgarita

@Healthymumlife & @spygirl2014 - I prefer dry wines and it is hard to find a good AF version. But my wine guy at SPECS suggested a sparkling one for a mimosas party I was hosting and it is now one of my go to ... especially as I now have a DIL that is pregnant and joining me in more AF evenings. It is not very sweet (not dry either) and those drinking it usually don't know it is non alcoholic. Try these Spanish wines:
- Rondel Zero from Spain. It's a Cava
- AF faux bubbly rose Senorio de la Tautila

Everyone is on a roll and me too! AF again last night. My diet is better also, even taking a liking to Barilla brand red lentil pasta spirals (100% red lentil) with TJ's Arrabiata sauce. It's got the cholesterol reducing fiber, the protein, etc and keeps me full for long. Sadly, no cheese because I am on a strict no-dairy plan next few weeks.
Speaking of cheese....and gelato....and wine.....curious to get more details on Ahoy's trip to Italy! Will you have time to hit Tuscany? I have never been, but suppose I'd fast as much as I could before going and make it an eat-hike-drink (not too-too much) and repeat trip.4 -
@ahoy_m8 wow, how do you use the chilies after you take them out of the freezer? I've never tried them, curious mind here.
I use ~1lb to make a big batch of hatch chile sauce that I divide in quarters and freeze as a recipe starter. So usually I have both hatch sauce brick and plain chiles in the freezer. But Sunday I was too tired to make sauce so I just chopped some chiles, mixed them with hominy and melted cheese on top to go with smoked chicken and black beans. So delish.
With the sauce, I most often make hatch chile stew with chicken, carrot and potato. But also enchiladas, rice-based casserole, tortilla-based chicken casserole. Or just hatch sauce poured over eggs/potatoes, chicken/polenta, or a burrito of any type. I basically feel that burritos are a hatch chile sauce delivery mechanism.6 -
Here is a great example of how to use your EMPTY 6 PACK CARTONS. Our in house artist @lmlmrn shows us just how easily paint bottles can be transported around her art studio. And she is AF while doing it! LOL
Ha! On first glance I thought those were hot sauce bottles vs. paint. Guess I have chiles on the brain!6 -

When DD#2 was a HS senior, Spring Break in Cancun was the thing, and it sounded like a TERRIBLE idea to me. But I didn't want to tell her no. So we planned a family trip to Tuscany and gave her a choice. Background: with 3 girls in 3 different schools, it was the first time in TEN YEARS they all had the same spring break, so it made sense to do something special vs. blatant Cancun decoy. DD#2 asked her friends what she should do and they said, "Are you crazy -- Tuscany!" And so it was.
This time we're heading south, because it's October and it will be a little warmer in the south and also because I have never been to the Amalfi coast and have wanted to go for decades. We will basically walk from the town of Amalfi to Sorrento staying (and lunching) in charming coastal and cliffside towns along the way. So hopefully it will be exactly as you describe! A few days in Ischia & Rome at the end.

This sounds like a Backroads trip. I've been looking at them and thinking that they sound awesome. Are you using a particular company to support you on your trip or are you planning it on your own? If so, which company and trip. I would love to get recommendations. Curious minds!
I have friends that have taken at least a dozen trips with Backroads.

I've never done backroads, or any package tour travel for that matter.4 -
@ahoy_m8 - Thanks for the link ... I'll check them out too! You'll have to let us know how the trip goes. Looks much less expensive than Backroads. Gives me another option since losing weight I want to take more active vacations in my 60s5
-
@ahoy_m8 I am so jealous! I have been to 93 countries (and counting, though most were work trips so kinda don't count) and the Amalfi Coast remains in my top 5. At this point, I'm always eager to see where else I can land and add to my globetrotting adventures, but that is an area I would return to again an again. I highly recommend doing the Drive, but whoever is driving won't see much because they'll need to concentrate on the road. Positano and Ravello in particular are bellissimi!6
-
@MissMay LOL my empties are re-purposed! I don't remember where or how I had that idea using the empty six pack but I had to walk through my house with the paint and I did not want to drop any of the bottles. Oh btw the painting was not a success so will paint over what I did when it dries ....can't have any waste
Yesterday was a lot of bad moments rolled into one and I let it get the better of me. So I was not alcohol free last night. I have really done poorly this month.
Tonight I go to my mandatory meeting to work the fair....we will see if my contact could pick up my security badge LOL.
I am going to just write this month off I think and start fresh September 1. However at least my poor decisions did not effect my weight so that was a plus
All this talk of travel really makes me want to be on the road again. But I am going to have to wait. But next February I will fly down to visit my daughter and new grandchild. So whoop whoop6 -
@spygirl2014 You are much more well travelled than I am, but Amalfi has been on my radar for a long time. When I look at the photos I tear up it is so beautiful. I really hope it can happen, pandemic-wise.
FWIW, I think work travel absolutely counts. There are places in the USA I never, ever would have been if it had not been for having to work there, and I feel enriched for the experience. It is truly a beautiful country.5 -
omgomgomgomg Less than 24 hours until my presentation and less than 72 until my interview! Starting to seriously stress out. This job would get me back to my friends and family w/cheaper rent, probably be a ~35% pay raise, more vacation, better benefits, and hopefully more fulfilling/fun. I think I'll get it, but I'll be absolutely devastated if not....EEEEK.
The stress is making me want to curl in a ball and sleep, not drink though, so at least there is that. Hugs all.8 -
@lilawolf it appears from your posts you are very well-qualified, very well-prepared, very-well got this! Whenever I interview potential employees, I WANT them to succeed. Keep that in mind along with the self-affirmation 'they'd be lucky to get me'. And, abstaining the night before is a good idea.6
-
@lilawolf When ever I have interviewed or been interviewed I 1. agree with @spygirl2014 with the self-affirmation and 2. Just remember it is just a conversation with someone new and you are getting to know one another and have a common goal. That always seems to keep me calm.
Good luck to you as you sound like you will be perfect for this position and you are motivated!5 -

I just looked at the link for your walking trip. So wonderful!!!5 -
Streak: 18 days AF (22/24 august)
Hmmmmm...what should I have for my first celebratory drink? 🤞🤔
Thanks @spygirl2014 and @lmlmrn
I think it will go well, but impostor syndrome is a dirty word. I'm calming down as I get more prepared and the videos I found to review are absolutely just that: review, not Greek. Ok a little Greek with all of those thetas and phis 😂6 -
Challenging evening with not 1 but 2 bottles of wine opened.
I remained AF.
Night my friends
