The night before I check the weather one last time and make a final call on clothing and put everything I need in a pile including bib, fuel, etc so I'm not stumbling around in the dark half-asleep. While I don't have a set race morning meal, I do tend to stick to the same few things. I wake up early enough to get 2 cups of coffee and eat a bagel or oatmeal and banana usually. I like to eat a good breakfast but that means I need at least an hour for my food to settle. No specific clothing items, just chosen for comfort. At the venue, I run a little to warm up, do a few stretches, and make a bathroom stop as close to the start as I can manage. That's pretty much it!4 -
Welcome @Legs_McGee23 and welcome back @johnisrunning
@rheddmobile Sorry to hear about your runniversary race going virtual but I can see why they went that way. Fingers crossed for actually getting to do it in person next year!
@juliet3455 sorry to hear about your string of injuries but still glad to see you again! That fall and the hike out definitely sounds painful.

Welcome back @johnisrunning
@juliet3455 that sounds painful! Good to hear you are able to do some running.
@skippygirlsmom - It has been too long since I have done a race to say for sure. I used to have a checklist that I would run through, make sure everything was packed and ready from that checklist the night before, and re-check before leaving to make sure I took everything (and update it whenever I felt I was ever missing anything). I would always plan to get there 2 hours before start time, and take coffee with me. I would of course do the pre-race bio-break and for anything over 10k I would drink a small gatorade just before, and would take a GU every hour during the race. I also had a post-run drink ready for me at the finish. After all that easy paced keto running this spring/summer all of that food/drink ritual seems kind of silly, but of course it's critical for race paces.
5.01 mile afternoon walk is in the books.9/1 - Morning Walk - 4.31 miles

I try to lay out everything the night before, including my breakfast, because I am not a morning person and races are usually in the morning, so it’s likely I have had three hours sleep and can barely function, much less put things on a plate. Race breakfast is my usual breakfast - steel cut oats stewed with apples, walnuts, cranberries, orange zest, and cinnamon, topped with raspberries and blueberries, almond butter, a dollop of Greek yogurt, and cacao powder, with a side of cottage cheese topped with jalapeño salsa, pickles, and cherry tomatoes. So you see it’s a lot of items to put together when you’re in a hurry, even though there’s no cooking involved. About 500 calories and keeps my blood sugar beautiful.
The most silly thing I do for races is I try to match my manicure and pedicure to the race colors. Short, square nails, but bonus if neon colors, glitter, or chrome are involved. I have been known to involve race themed decals or other nail art for holiday races. My upcoming race that went virtual was for the West Cancer center and their colors are lime green and sky blue, which makes for a fun combo! Still planning on doing my nails for the virtual race even if no one sees them but me and my husband. It’s very silly but it makes races feel special, and I joke that my toes are faster when painted in silly colors!8 -
I'm short on time and had to skim... was sitting here trying to figure out who our bird-watcher is, the guy who takes his binoculars on runs... finally realized it's not someone here, but Tony, who used to appear frequently on the Marathon Talk podcast. He's doing other things now, but I always got a laugh out of his "Tony's Trials".
School is back in session, so I should start getting out the door earlier Guess I need to go to sleep earlier, too...
Welcome back @juliet3455 sorry about the injuries though.
I'm also signed up for that Guinness 10k and like @quilteryoyo realized I also have a HM the day before so I guess I should pull a Pastor Vincent and race them both while aiming for PRs on both? Just kidding. It may be a slow 10k. I keep having this weird fear that I'm going to forget to run the 10k though 😆4 -

I’m taking a break for a week due to hip pain. Hopefully the pain will go away. Is there anything I can do to help. I’m thinking I’ll do some yoga. I don’t want to over do it just something gentle. If the pain doesn’t go away with the week off I think I should go to the sports medicine doctor. I’m not sure if it’s a running injury or the fall I took. Any advice you want to give I’m all ears.10

I changed my walking/running goal for September from 100 miles to 85 miles since I decided to start Couch to 5K. So far I have done two C25K runs and so far, so good! I am trying to build my strength back after breast cancer treatment so I am hoping I can finish C25K. I love reading everyone updates. So inspiring!

Surf City Virtual 25th Anniversary HM done today to start the month. Actual race won't be run until the 11th and they put up new covid rules and running with a mask. I am really happy I decided to switch to virtual where I can run all by myself and not need to wear a mask.
It was a great morning for a run; cool and cloudy but incredibly humid. I was drenched and dripping before I was even half finished. I know because I needed to wipe my sunglasses and had nothing dry, anywhere, to dry them with! It was slow with lots of walking but it is done! Hubby turned on the jacuzzi for me and it was wonderful having the jets hit my hips, glutes and back and even manage to swing and hold my legs up so the jets were on my IT bands and tight calves- stayed in it until I turned into a prune😂

I wasn’t gonna say anything but was wondering how 100 miles would fit into c25k! It’s been a while since I did it but the math wasn’t adding up in my head!
Glad you are getting back into it, take it easy and don’t be afraid to repeat runs if they get difficult.3 -

Ha ha! It’s a combination of Couch to 5K and then walking the other days. I am hoping that will get me to at least 85 miles. I will definitely repeat weeks if needed!!4 -
September Goal: 95 Miles
Welcome to all the new members and welcome back to all those returning. We've missed you. This is such a fun and supportive group. I have learned so much being part if it. I don't always comment as much as I would like. Especially since I started a new job in October I am usually on my phone now and sometimes that makes it harder. But I always give lots of hugs and likes.
When I went to bed last night I really wasn't sure if I would run today or not. My hip was fine yesterday morning, but bothered me a lot at work. But it felt ok when I went to bed so I decided to play it by ear. When I got up this morning it felt ok so I decided to run, but to take it easy and not push too hard. And to stop if I had any pain. It was really hot this morning at 5:30 at 79°F feels like 82°. The plan called for the same run as yesterday. I ended up with 4 miles in 48 minutes at 11:54. It was supposed to be 3.5 miles in 36 minutes with 10:24 pace. So I ran a little further and a little slower. But I guess that it all evened out because Hal said I nailed it and he gave me an "A". And the first run if September is in the books.
My hip was ok during the run. I was aware of it especially at the start of the run, but it wasn't painful. I did a little pre-run dynamic warm up and yoga and foam rolled afterwards. I felt pretty good during the run, and really good afterwards. And my hip was better during work too. I tried to get up and move around more throughout the day and I think that helped. The plan for tomorrow is 5 miles at 10:24. I plan to warm up again and head out. But I will probably take it pretty easy and not push the pace. And if I need to stop and walk, I will.
4.05/95 miles completed for September
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon

So addressing @swenson19d monthly questions...
Monthly question?
How are your yearly goals coming along?
This is what I had written out...
What are your fitness goals for this next year?
Rehab hamstring and get back to running regularly✅
Start my day with an early workout instead of at noon-ummm sometimes
Run only the 3-4 miles recommended with an occasional longer run-ummm sometimes
One HITT run per week-ummm sometimes
Participate in regular (1 or 2 x per week) fitness classes - nope can't do with covid requirements
Strength train twice per week minimum-ummm sometimes
Eat healthier: Cut sugar, Increase fiber, more vegetables✅
Where do you want to be a year from now?
Healthy and uninjured✅
Running a faster mile - have improved but not as much as I would like
Running more continuous miles - still doing run/walk and may be ongoing
Stronger and Lighter - maybe 50% I am lighter but not yet stronger I don't think
Will you ask a question, even a silly one? or start an interactive word game? Hmm - can't think of any silly questions but I ask mostly (silly) questions all the time
And @skippygirlsmom question: I’ll ask a silly question this month – What are your pre-race rituals? Is there always something you eat the night before or the morning of? Do you wear a certain pair of socks or hat? What do you always do?
I also check the weather forecast, layout my kit for the morning so I don't have to think about it. Try to get to bed early and actually sleep because I am typically nervous. Get up early enough to have a cup of coffee and maybe 1/2 a protein bar and/or some oatmeal and take a banana to have 30mins before race start.
@rheddmobile - love your matching manicure/pedicure nail polish! You can always share it with all of us if you do it for the virtual race!
@polskagirl01 - I keep worrying that I will forget too. Think I will add it to my calendar!5 -
Proper spring out there today. Lovely and sunny. Another 60 mins aerobic - I told my coach I didn’t want to do speed work in lockdown as it triggers my niggles and I can’t get to an osteo or physio until we’re in ‘level 2’, which will probably be another three weeks at least.4

@julieannegannon very good call on taking a break. I hope it gets better!
@shanaber great job on your virtual HM! I've been in races that required masks at the start/finish, but running an entire race in one would be a deal-breaker for me.
I went out for a run after school dropoff. I had a couple route options in mind, but then came up to another tractor path that *on the map* appeared to connect to another road I was heading for. Sigh. The path disappeared and I was stuck in thisThought I was going to lose a shoe there, haha.Ended up with around 12k.5 -

Golf instead of running today. Need to be mindful of my hip and not aggravate it.

PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

Finally got out there today! Rain in the earlier part of the week left it a little chilly this morning, in the mid-50s F.3 -
Welcome to all the newcomers and welcome back to those who have been away for a while. We've missed you.
I've been reading, liking, and hugging as appropriate. I know I usually catch up and comment, but I just don't have the time right now. I will try to keep up from here, but no promises. Just have a lot going on in my life at the moment - working more than I really want to due to a couple of people getting fired (was needed) and another got a new job, have things to do for my cousin to make sure he keeps his Medicaid, things for mom, my Aunt's visitation and funeral, and trying to find time for at least some of my runs.
This week is supposed to be the hardest week in my HM plan, with my long run being 12 miles. I have been trying to figure out how I can get that run in, but am coming up empty. I had planned to run it on Saturday morning, but that is when my Aunt’s burial is going to be. What are your thoughts on just doing what I can this week and not worrying about getting in a 12 mile run? My longest run so far was 11 miles on July 24th. If I don’t worry about this week and stick to the plan for next week, the long run is 10 miles and then the HM would be the next weekend.
Good decision to do your HM virtual @shanaber . I can't imagine running a HM in a mask.
Glad your hip is doing better @kgirlhart . Nice run. Glad Hal isn't holding you to the letter of his plan.
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you get out of lockdown soon. It's really bad here, but no lockdown, of course. We had the most cases in one day yesterday - since the beginning of the pandemic last year! It's scary. Just hoping and praying that the vaccine works for me and mom.
@polskagirl01 I think I would have turned around and went back the way I came. Good job on your run.
@Tramboman Hope you have a good game of golf and it doesn't aggravate your hip!

Great job on your virtual HM @shanaber!
Major struggle this morning. 7 miles felt like 27. Along with the miserable heat and dew point, both shins hurt with each of the tiny 13,136 steps I took. Haven't felt that kind of pain in over a year. Not sure why it came on so strong today.

Thursday is my rest day from running and, all the better, as there's some major flooding in these parts. Did 10 minutes of core work this morning, however.
9/1 - Easy Run - 5.1 miles (45:30 - 8:55/mile)
9/2 - Rest
September To-Date: 5.1 miles
September Goal: 141 miles
Percentage Complete: 3.64%

Honestly, if you were able to do 11 miles then you are capable of doing 13. Do what you can. It sounds like you don’t have a lot of other options with all the life stuff. Maybe some time will free up and you can make it work. I know you have mentioned before that you are not one to run in the morning, but would waking up an hour earlier one day be enough cushion in your schedule to make it work?
You have been consistent and you still have another 10 miler the week before. I personally love plans with a 12 mile long run but I know that it is a mental hurdle for me and not a physical one. So many plans never have you go beyond 10 miles in prep for a HM. If you just don’t have the time or bandwidth to deal with the long run this week, do what you can and trust your training headed into your HM. You got this!3 -

This^ It could be several different things and a lot of pains people attribute to the hip aren’t actually hip joint pain but rather attachment muscles around the joint that are hurting.
@penguinmama87 I’m so jealous of your 50’s!!
@Scott6255 Oh, no that sounds painful! I hope you figure out the source quickly!
@johnisrunning It’s nice when the terrible weather actually coincides with a rest day!2 -
Sept totals: 3.1/70 miles
9/2: 3.1 miles
Had to get out a little earlier today to make sure I was home in time to harass my daughter into getting ready for school. My husband usually has the pleasure, but he is out of town for a few days. It was dark the entire run, which I actually kind of like. Usually the sun is just coming up when I set out. I actually caught a couple of sprinklers! Also, the exercisers out at this slightly earlier hour are not quite as friendly as my usual group. Maybe they are all tired! Otherwise, run was pretty uneventful but in a good way.4 -
9/1 walked the yard 41 minutes, threw brush into piles. DD said the heat index was 108F. I wore a hydration pack with ice water.
logged food for 3 days now.
Yay! But scale isn't moving at all... 🤔7 -
@juliettegannon - I defnitely agree with the others, more detail is needed. With my first HM I developed what I thought was a hip issue on the right side, but it was ultimately my iliotibial band (which came back later in the form of knee pain). Could be a number of other things as well.
@quilteryoyo - I recall back with my first HM (why does that keep coming up?) how much I struggled to hit 12 and then when the HM came being happy to finally reach that 12 mile marker, and then the finish. Keep in mind it's about putting all that fitness "in the bank" ahead of the event with the mix of running over all that time. That one final 12 miler is just one deposit. Can you fit a shorter long run in like an 8 miler? Imagine how small a difference getting 2/3 of that final training run is compared also getting that final 1/3 on that run. That's what we're really talking about here.
Sorry to hear about the shins @Scott6255 I hope it is nothing that lasts.
Keep going @swenson19d, that scale will move. Even if that movement is you throwing it in the river!
Added a 1.36 mile walk last night, with a 4.23 mile walk this morning.9/1 - Morning Walk - 4.31 miles[/quote]
9/1 - Afternoon Walk - 5.01 miles
9/1 - Evening Walk - 1.36 miles
9/2 - Morning Walk - 4.23 miles

September 2 – 8.35
I’m not sure what the temp was this morning (supposed to be around 62F) but it felt great out there! I had a neighbor’s dog run with me for a little while. The last time he did that, he followed me all the way home. Thankfully, this time he turned back about a mile before my house. Lots of stars and a sliver of moon were out when I started. No pre-race or race ritual for me @skippygirlsmom. I do stick with the advice of nothing new on race day. Always lay my clothes out the night before but I do that for all my runs. And I never, ever wear the race event shirt before or during the race – you have to earn that sucker first!
This little baby is less than a week old. So cute
Trying to get a picture of the hawk resting atop the tree but he was too far away.
Sorry about your hip pain @julieannegannon. My only recommendation is finding a yoga video that focuses on hip stretches. Hope you heal soon.
Congrats on getting your HM done @shanaber!!! Way to go!
@polskagirl01 – Ick. That’s a muddy mess you wondered into!
@johnisrunning – I read about all the flooding in the tri-state area from Ida. Lots of scary pictures. Be careful out there!

Wow you blink and it's September! Rest day yesterday so just a walk.
How are your yearly goals coming along? They are not. Injury in Feb which has extended most of the year so changed plans and here we are. Running is now slow but needs must.
Sorry to hear about your aches @julieannegannon and obviously you need to see someone to get proper advice. Both my 'injuries' this year (knee, hip/lower back) were down to the same thing according to my physio - poor core. My body was contorting to balance out strong and weak muscles.
Plans for the month - make progress. Don't sweat the small stuff. Do something nice for someone everyday!
Well done @shanaber and you have made me determined to complete some virtual races this month.
Keep putting one foot in front of the other!6
