@SummerSkier it almost seems backwards that for the same person, similar efforts, it would be lower with age, since that would suggest that age makes you more efficient at oxygen consumption if the 20 year younger version pumped that volume to achieve the same effort. I'm sure there's probably a good explanation, just at face value seems backwards to me. I like how you changed that setting to test it. Fascinating.0

Haha. The higher the # the better. It just says that regardless of how fit age plays a huge factor in the fitness equations.1 -

I ran the YWCA Turkey Trot today. It was a chilly start at 27F but a clear and beautiful morning. For the first time this year, men were allowed to run the race but only women were eligible for place rankings. I think I saw one guy running the race. This was the first 5K I ever ran back in 2014 (I think). Itβs a relatively small race but fun. My friend won the grandmaster and got a certificate, small trophy and red roses. I donβt know what my official time was. It was not chipped time and the clock read 32: something when I crossed the finish line. I forgot to stop my Garmin and havenβt been able to find the results online yet. Anyway, I finished upright so all is good!7 -
@marisap2010 - happy race runniversary!
@Teresa502 - sometimes those small races are more fun because they are so relaxed.
I got out for a run yesterday by myself (Hobbes the Vizsla refused to get up off the couch). We are puppy-sitting Beaux the 8mo Vizsla puppy for the next 10 days and he arrived yesterday afternoon. The pups ran and played themselves into exhaustion. This morning though they were ready to go again. We had some new furniture being delivered so it made sense to take them out for a walk/run. Beaux really isn't old enough yet to really run so today's outing was mostly a fast walk with a few bursts of running but we went over 5 miles. When we got home my husband was working on the new TV and there were cables everywhere so I stayed out back with the pups for another couple of hours. The pups were exhausted. Beaux went in the crate while Hobbes had his dinner and he fell so soundly asleep he didn't move for hours other than waving his paws around as he dreamt. π

Lucky break for me! My beloved altra timps were put away dirty after last yearβs winter trail series and had dry rot when I got them out this year. They are holding together but itβs a matter of time before they disintegrate. And reviews of the new timps say they changed everything I used to like about them. So I was hoping to find some on the secondary market. Got a pair on eBay for thirty bucks which look brand new, there is a rub on the tongue but I donβt think the soles have ever touched the ground! And best of all they are green!
I got my original pair at REI after trying them on as a joke because they were literally the ugliest shoes I have ever laid eyes on. Husband dared me to try on the ugly shoes. And after bounding up and down the terrain test thingy I said, you know what, I think these are going home with me. Husband says, Thatβs it, I have run with you no matter what, but I will not be seen in public with you wearing those shoes! He was joking but he did say this. Anyway, the original pair is purple and orange and flecked like something diseased. The vamp is offset which is supposed to protect the top of your foot from bruising (which it does quite well, and I have a problem with this) but combined with the wide altra toebox it makes the shoe look as if it was made by aliens who had heard a running shoe described but never seen one.
The new pair are still ugly but at least the colorway is less alarming. In green the flecks are more βcamoβ and less βalien egg.β I love my ugly shoes! Canβt wait to get out in them!
This is the color of my original pair. Trust me, even uglier in person!
My ugly shoes look at home on my ugly afghan! Check out the spangly new tread on those heels, these are used shoes!10 -

My goals for 2022 are to improve my half and full marathon times. I have a half in January, but I plan to run the Wineglass full next October.

Todayβs training run called for 1:15:00 at 11:13-12:13 pace. My average pace was 11:20. With warmup and cooldown, I ran 7.15 miles. It was a nice day again at the park.
A friend told me today that she is considering running Wineglass with me next year. Registration opens soon, so I will go ahead and sign up quickly to get the early bird price. π5 -
Great running everyone. I was 5 pages behind this morning, so I didn't comment on everyone, but did read them all. You are doing great.
@Teresa502 Good job finishing the Cades Cove run since it was such a struggle. Did you see any deer? I think I would be a bit worried to see bear if I were running. I have this run on my bucket list. Great job on the Turkey Trot!
@polskagirl01 I'm glad you and your family are now okay and over your illness - well, at least feeling better and able to get out and about.
@mshawski Glad you explained your HR for your run on the 17th. I was wondering how you maintained that for 5 miles. You may have to hide the alcohol from your watch.
@rheddmobile The story of the couple and their dog is, well, interesting. I wonder why she was so intent that you both leave? It sounds like the dog wasn't aggressive. I'm glad you alerted the ranger and do hope they were okay and maybe learned their lesson. Great running for you and your DH. Nice find with the shoes. I don't think they are so ugly. I kinda like them.
Welcome @Lorelei .
@Scott6255 Glad to see your shin pain is improving.
@SummerSkier When I first read your Friday post, I read underdress as undress, then I read your comment under the spoiler and decided I wasn't entirely wrong.
I have had computer issues that made me have to leave it in the shop for a couple of days, my back has been worse since Wednesday, and I've just been really busy and tired so I haven't been on here much.
I raked leaves on Wednesday and was so happy that my back was doing good. That is, until I got ready for church and bent over to tie my shoes. I couldn't straighten back up without getting a catch in my back. I finally did and went on to church, but if I moved wrong, it hurt. Thursday morning I could barely get out of bed, but soldered on it started feeling better as the day went on. I had a chiropractor appointment that afternoon. We discussed it and he wasn't too concerned, since it was feeling good by then. I even did my back strengthening exercises for him. One the way home it started hurting and did some the rest of the night. Friday and Sat morning were horrible...worse than Thursday morning, but did get better as the day went on. I dreaded getting out of bed this morning, but, was pleasantly surprised when I was able to stand up with no pain at all! Yeah. It is a little tight today, but so far no real pain. Because of all of this, I haven't been doing my back exercises and have just kept up my streak by walking a mile every day. I see the chiropractor again on Tuesday. We'll see what he has to say about it all. We discussed Thursday that it was the leaf raking that had aggravated it. I just probably shouldn't have done the exercises that day, even though it wasn't hurting and didn't hurt when I was doing them. If it had, I would have quit. I'm just happy today is a good day. I hope I'll feel like running is a possibility again next week.8 -
Well I had an OK run Saturday morning. Was out of town for work meetings. Still tired, but took it easy.
Non-running Medical DramaThen later I suddenly started feeling very sick with severe abdominal pain... long story short it got very bad, very fast and I ended up with an ambulance ride and a night on a hard bed in the emergency room hallway with lots of pain meds. Kidney stone. This seems better than the other things it could've been. Also I have great work-friends who got me help and took care of my very worried kids and husband when no one was allowed to go with me.
So I'm not sure what's going on or if there's some lesson I'm supposed to be learning, but really, I've had enough!8 -

It was a nice 32F this morning when I headed out. It was nice to be able to wait for daylight to run. I got my booster vaccine later in the morning, grocery shopped and visited with my parents. Planning to work from home tomorrow just in case I feel bad.
@rheddmobile β Great score on the shoes!! I think the colors are nice.
@shanaber β love the descriptions of Hobbes and Beaux. We need pictures!
Thanks @tramboman!
@SummerSkier β We are mileage twins today!
I only saw 1 deer @quilteryoyo. I see more in my yard on any given day! Glad your back feels better today.
Wow @polskagirl01 β life has really been hitting you with a whammy lately. Did you pass the kidney stone?
2 -
@polskagirl01 gosh, that is more than you needed for sure. Hope you are doing ok now and the stone has passed.
@quilteryoyo sorry about your back having a bit of a flare up again. Glad it seems better. No more leaf raking! That is hard work, and hard on the back. I just did that for over 2 hours today and my back is a little complainy about that too.

I got back from DC last night. I only got the one run in while I was there. It turned a lot cooler and I was busy with conference stuff, plus I prioritized going out to breakfast with a friend. I ate way too much on this trip, it was great. This morning I met up with a big group of running friends who have been trying to get everyone together on Sundays and get some people who have not been running very often back. It's more social than anything but it was a fun time and we got 4 miles done.3 -
@quilteryoyo Iβm sorry about your back issues. I hope you feel better soon.
@polskagirl01 Oh no! I hope you were able to pass the kidney stone and are feeling better!0 -
@katharmonic I hope your back is okay. Nice running.
Thanks everyone for the good wishes for my back. I hope it's about over it too.1 -

So I went a head and signed up for it again and hopefully can do 2022 km and maybe 2022 miles on a team again. I hope to contribute more this next year as I only got in about 60% of what @eleanorhawkins contributed.
Now that I am mostly healthy and uninjured my aim is to run consistently and stay healthy and uninjured.

@quilteryoyo - I agree - no more leaf raking. There is too much reaching while twisting and bending involved!
@polskagirl01 - I hope you are doing well and were able to go back home! SO scary for everyone concerned! You have definitely had more than your share lately!
@Teresa502 - puppy pictures for you:Hobbes and Beaux on Friday night working on 'stay'. Hobbes is great Beaux is iffy but he is very young and did great.
Beaux doing his absolute best Vizslas 'never look at you when you are taking a picture' even for a treat...
Hobbes showing that he can look for a picture when a treat is involved!
We still have energy after that long walk to play some tug...
Still so tired this morning!
I am hoping to get a video of his crazy puppy antics when he knows it is time to eat or when he first gets out of his crate in the morning. If successful I will post it.6 -
@SummerSkier I think that's hilarious blaming your unknown injuries on the cat. I think I will start doing that. I don't trust our cats. One's too haughty, and one's so nice I bet she's hiding something.
@kgirlhart So sad about the pet dog.
@Scott6255 glad your shins are feeling better!2 -
Thank you everyone for the well-wishes. I don't think it passed yet and need to follow up with a doctor, but it did move further down and they thought they saw it on ultrasound in a spot that "shouldn't hurt anymore". We'll see, I guess. But I feel pretty wrecked today and have mostly been sleeping.6
