WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2022

I have gained three pounds since February! That's the wrong direction! I need to stay out of my mother's candy. And the cookies. And eat more spinach and broccoli. But the good news is that I feel stronger, if not slimmer. So maybe I'm building some muscle. Still it's no excuse. I have been between 168 and 174 for years now, and I really need to stick with the plan until I break out of that. In the down direction!

And I rode Henry today. Yay! I'm lucky to ride in an indoor arena so a gentle rain isn't a problem. My seat is still wobbly. I wonder if the lunges in my yoga will help my seat. My knee was okay for riding. It is just a little weak, so I have to be careful not to injure it.
Horn worms as pets? My preference is a pet that is warm and fluffy and affectionate. Even if they do barf on the floor once in awhile. I'm looking at you, Teddy boo!

ok- the oddest thing popped up on Facebook- ok, odd to me. It was an ad for Petco(pet store)
they actually sell Horn worms(tomato worms to me)! $11 for four of them. They are the reason my mother in law will not plant tomatoes, because she might end up one on her plants. I may have to see if they want them if I end up with any in my garden this summer
Debbie
I wonder why a pet store sells those? We have issues with them too. It's a battle at our house with the Mister and his tomato plants. One year it was similar to Bill Murray's character and the gopher in Caddyshack. I found it entertaining.

Food for lizards is what I read
Then why the heck don't our lizards eat them! We have lizards all over the place.
Tina in CA
The comment I read on the Petco sight was from someone who had a Bearded Dragon so must be for the bigger "pets'. One said to make sure to give them smaller horn worms because she gave her bearded dragon one and the thing bit the lizard a few times and now is afraid of them.0 -
This is DH's aunt the last time I saw her at her 90th birthday, five years ago. Although she was frail and bent, her spirit was strong and her wits sharp.

Machka- Chocolat is one of my very favorite movies. I don't own many; but I do own that one. Have you seen 100 Foot Journey? If you like Chocolat; you will like 100 Foot Journey. I love movies with food in them. I find cooking very romantic.
My favorite movie is "Under the Tuscan Sun", and " Eat, Pray, Love". During the holiday season I watch "The Holiday". I suppose all three movies have a theme of a person being brave, changing their surroundings, and finding themselves in their journeys. I would love to do that one day, or for a week.😂
Today I had a little mini party for lunch. In little finger bowls were,:
4 feta stuffed olives
4 pcs of marinated artichoke hearts
2 spoonfuls of hummus and olive bruschetta
A tin of mackerel in a nice olive oil
Fridge pickles and pickled beets
A slice of havarti cheese
Big Wheat Thin crackers.
Now sipping Gevalia coffee pretending I am in Tuscany, at a bistro.😁

Barbara ... thank you for the recipe link ... I've used some of her recipes before and liked them. Anything with chocolate on it, by the way, is up my alley! Glad to hear that your knees are doing well!
Pam ... welcome!
Vicki ... sometimes we just need a break. You've had a lot on your plate recently, along with the loss of your pup. Hugs.
Lanette ... I so wish there was a "laugh" button! I always enjoy your posts. I have to agree, that activity, any activity can really boost our spirits. I took a look at the facebook page ... beautifully arranged plates! We do eat with our eyes first.
Annie ... I hope your mom's appointment goes well. It is sad to see our parents decline. I am knee deep in assisted living home information as I look to move my parents to Buffalo ... I'm overwhelmed and doubt I will find as nice of a place as they're currently living in. The day has passed where I can take care of them myself. I feel bad about that and give you a lot of credit for staying with your parents.
Debbie ... there are things my husband enjoys that I have absolutely no interest in, but sometimes I go along just to be "present" in his interests.
I know I'm missing people and posts that I wanted to comment on ... know that I think of you all when I'm reading.

My middle sons wife had a daughter, she'll be 3 in May.💖. My husband is still plugging thru life, on year 7 after liver transplant.💖. He's like my Ever Ready bunny. Just will keep going and going, and going....
He says, "well duh, I have new pieces parts"!

Allie — I’m happy you’re home and hope you are able to rest after getting your needed food & water. 🌹
Lanette — I am happy to see your post. Weed whacking a garden is vigorous & challenging work. A garden is a treasure that is worth time & effort. ⭐️
Heather — I love the photo of your tall & handsome husband with his tiny and dear auntie. I’m happy to see them together. ❤️
DH has been having health challenges. Nurse practitioners now come twice a week for DH & a physical therapist comes twice on opposite days. Their work is helping him. Unfortunately I have not been able to go to my yoga class because of timing. I hope this will change & I’ll be able to go to my classes. I miss my friends there and the enjoyment of yoga.
Katla3 -
Katla I use my phone to watch free yoga videos instead of an in person class. It turns out the tiny screen is no more difficult to see than a teacher at the head of a crowded class. And the audio is better! I would highly recommend "Yoga with Adriene" who has hundreds of free yoga videos on YouTube with commercials only before and after the practice, not during. I found at least one Yoga for Seniors and also a chair yoga video.
It wouldn't replace your friends of course, nor the chance to get out, but it would help you keep limber meanwhile.

Pam – welcome to a great group of ladies who know just where you’re at.
Barbara – what a wonderful day you had!
After work took Jerry home (I got done early), then to the post office to mail most of Jess’ announcements, to the soup kitchen then the gym then the Salvation Army. Now home and will have dinner in a few
I, too, leave my cell phone far away. Sometimes I have my pocketbook (where it is) in the trunk of my car. I do use it as my alarm when I’m away from home
Last week I was so hungry after work while at the soup kitchen. I was going to take something with me to snack on and totally forgot. So stopped at the dollar store and got these cheese crisps. Only 100 calories
KJ – the alligator is going to go out by the pool and there’s nothing but stone around it. We’ve had frozen hamsters in our freezer. That was when we lived in the Poconos. The hamster died and we had to wait for the ground to thaw out so that we could bury it. In the meantime – into the freezer he went!
Boy, is this a cold time. We usually can get the pool opened, but we can’t even get the covers off. Too windy since they have to be cleaned and cold! Looks like the first time we possibly can is Tuesday. I was going to go to the gym and unless the weather changes, I’m going to skip that. Maybe I’ll wear my pedometer since I’ll be getting in a fair amount of steps putting the ceramics out
Went food shopping the other day and I almost died at the price of food. I never thought that the $15 an hour minimum wage was a good idea. But that’s what you may have to earn in order to eat!
Lanette – you’ve been missed. Great to “see” ya
My all time fav movie is “Dr. Zhivago”. Never fails that I cry at the start of the movie (I think because I can relate) and then at the end. Never fails
Am getting the Rummikub notice ready. Honestly, I think next March I’m going to let it go, let someone else do it. I’ve done it for quite a few years. We have a lot of new members so let one of them take over. But in the meantime…..

Good news, bad news: The gastroenterologist's nurse got her end of it done and got the prescription to the VA. Talked to the pharmacy technician at the VA and she said, "Yes, it's ready to go, but it needs the pharmacist's sign-off." So, that will mean Monday now, presumably, if I'm lucky.
The VA's checks and balances always seem to be the ones that create a bottleneck in the process to stop patients getting what they need in a reasonable amount of time. However, the chief of pathology at this same hospital for more than a decade came to work drunk and high and misdiagnosed as many as 3000 lab and pathology specimens, which led to at least 15 veterans' deaths. For thirteen years, he altered paperwork to show his work was accurate, when in reality his error rate was nearly ten percent. That's more than ten times the usual rate of .7 percent. He was caught, by the way, a year after Corey and I moved here. He was making nearly a quarter-million dollars a year with the VA.
OK, that may have been a diatribe. But I'm still not cussing yet.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR7 -
Good luck Lisa. Heaven knows it's been a long battle for you. Here's hoping that once you get the medicine that the process works smoothly ever after.

My cell phone sits across the room when I sleep. I keep it on vibrate much of the time. Now I'm getting more calls from my mother's healthcare team, I might have to change that.
Annie in Delaware0 -
All you ladies talking about your various phone practices. I kind of feel like an alien. I do not have a phone, but we do have a cell phone that husband turns on when we are away from our landline. Otherwise at home, our 1957 black rotary phone is plugged into our modem here. We have a cordless phone plugged in as well, in a spare room which can take messages. Our cordless phone can complete the ordering of prescriptions or paying bills, where as the 1957 phone can't. I check my tablet every so often for texts from family, my email hotmail act rarely gets any activity, just a spam email every so often. I wake up when I wake up, though we do have an alarm if we need to wake up at a specific time. My husband was conditioned to wake up at 5:30/6:00 am every morning without the use of an alarm. Just his own internal clock. He can mentally tell himself to wake up and he does. The Navy taught him to sleep whenever so there are times when we get to lets say Seattle's University hospital yearly appointments, and he states we are early so we nap in the car for a bit. Then ding, he's out for a specific time. While I stare out the window or do crosswords. I have never been able to just "turn off" like that.

My indoor hobby is meditation. It's supposed to be very good for the brain, and it helps me keep an even keel. I prefer the still mind type to the mindfulness type. But it sure doesn't burn calories!
Annie in Delaware0 -
Lisa ... the VA and your experiences with it are just mind boggling to me.
Rebeca ... While I don't have any military service, I too can wake up without an alarm ... usually an hour before it is set to go off ... which is really annoying. Doesn't matter if it's for 5:00am either ... awake I am at 4:00am then. No problem falling asleep anywhere either at anytime. I can sleep sitting up in a waiting room chair.
My phone sits on a charger base on my nightstand. Being deaf, I can't hear the thing at any time. I wear an apple watch during the day that vibrates and gives me a visual. At night, I let my husband deal with incoming calls on the phone lines ... cell phones as well as a landline we still keep for my caption service.
Indoor hobby. Reading. I used to love cooking and baking, but that's waned a bit since my husband and son have put on quite a bit of weight. I feel like I'm enabling them when I bake. Way back in the day, I used to do pen and ink drawings with watercolors on consignment. I may try my hand at it again someday. And I've always had an interest in amateur photography. Something else to consider.

I admire you all with internal clocks! Sadly, I think if husband didn't wake up early, I would probably just sleep until 10am every morning. I really am quite lazy. I will admit it.
I think each of the ladies here do what we have to do, and what works for us.👍. I am happy you have technology tools that assist you! 💖
I have noticed since eldest son has left, my husband wants to do more cooking on his own. I do still cook 50% of the time during the week. He's in charge of his breakfasts and sometimes we share lunches or dinners. He does dislike my "complicated" soups and stews. Too many items in there he doesn't eat.
Hugs friend!

Indoor things for relaxation that I do are crochet, read, do jigsaw puzzles, listen to music, yoga, watch TV with DD in the evenings. I will occasionally do some computer games but not often. I also have started doing meditation.
Lisa - I so empathize with you. I have been dealing with Bank of America for months now trying to free up my mother's funds so that I can pay her end of life expenses. I spent 45 minutes on hold today to find out the bank here did not send all of the paperwork I gave them so the claim has just been sitting and now they tell me they will send me a packet in 10 to 14 business days. Acckk!

I just found this group and am loving the April post. I’m so grateful for the progress I’ve made as I’ve been morbidly obese all my adult life. 75 down, 75 to go!! My word for 2022 would have to be perseverance!!

@LisaInArkansas, I have a sister and all of her adult kids etc in Mena Arkansas area. They seem to have worse tornado threat there than we do here in the central area of Texas!! I do have a mobile home on 13 wooded acres so I had a concrete storm shelter installed. I am not ashamed to dive in that thing when tornadoes are threatened!!!

Hi Gals,
This is not cheerful news – so if you need some good news come back to this at a later date.So some of you know this some are new and don’t…. but I’m just going to do an update.Thinking of you all.
My brother (metastasized colon cancer) has been admitted to the hospital tonight. He is dying. My family is being told different things by him. And he has forbidden his mom or son from coming to see him. So my brother has told his son that he’s going to have surgery and will be ok. My brother has told his mom that he has asked for doctor assisted suicide. I am pretty sure that neither is the full truth. My family has a history of lying, and telling what ever story the person you are talking to they most want to hear. My brother was diagnosed with colon cancer 5 years ago and was told in the first 8 months that it had metastasized – about 3 years ago that it was in his brain. He has gotten little to no medical care ( his choice) and has managed with a huge quantity of marijuana – both edible and smoked.
My mom is doing ok. My nephew (his son) is having a hard time – as my brother doesn’t do paperwork there is no will, no plan and as the legal next of kin my 23 year old nephew is shouldering the burden. I am doing all I can for him. And my mom who believes she should be the person in charge is undermining him.
My brother and I do not have a good relationship. I am a domestic violence survivor and he is my abuser but I do not wish pain for him, and hope he can pass quickly and with the least agony.
So we are not a praying family but would like thoughts of peace and kindness.

Ever since my husband's grand mal seizure, it's rare that my phone is out of arm's reach. I didn't have it right with me then, and had to go run for it to call the ambulance. Never again ... I hope!

My internal clock tells me to go to sleep about 1:30 am and get up about noon.
Not sure if I'm lazy or just that tired.
I also can fall asleep just about anywhere. I can nod off in lectures, meetings, waiting rooms, during MRIs and CT scans, during root canals if the dentist doesn't talk for a bit, on the bus of course ... anywhere I can just relax for a minute.
