Barbara - so far I've called 2 places about regraveling our driveway. The first was a nearby quarry - Rosie was barking so loud at something she saw outside the window (bird, leaf blowing, etc. ) I couldn't get a lot of the conversation, but I think they do driveways. The gal I spoke to sounded like she was about 16, no telephone etiquette. I'm jealous of these kids with good hearing, lol. I'll stop by in person one of these days.
Also emailed a road building contractor I used to know when I worked at the county. Haven't heard back, I'm sure he's super busy. Lots of building & new driveways going on in our county right now, housing boom. My re-graveling isn't critical.
I thought about your situation with adding grading to the equation. It might be worth the time and trouble to head to the county public works/building department and do some investigation about that lane you live on. Like, was it part of a subdivision, was any of it engineered as a condition of building, etc. You might be able to get a county engineer to come take a look at it and give his/her opinion.
Or a road builder/construction guy to come give an estimate. Perhaps that's already been done.
Our county used to do that for a small fee, not sure if they still do. I'm the type of person that needs reassurance and advice on this stuff.
Also, is there a road maintenance agreement for your lane? Are you guys splitting the cost with neighbors? Just curious. Our private road is blacktopped, but starting to fail in areas-just getting a little crumbly on the edges (we aren't on any slope.) So one of these days, hopefully after I don't live here anymore, lol, there will be big expense for those of us who live on this lane if it has to be ground out, new base layer and asphalt. Gulp. 1/4 mile. It's a subdivision and we all share equally in the maintenance costs.
Debbie - I am following your story, I agree, keep doing what you are doing. Taking on MIL's full time care would not be good. You need to take care of you!
Had a good call with my attorney yesterday morning, he went over a few things that needed clarification. He said he's retiring the end of this week. Finally - he's 75. I can't imagine being embroiled in legal inheritance messes and not going bonkers. He's going to keep a few of us older clients who need him from time to time, but otherwise taking down his shingle.
Rebecca - what a beautiful train station! Enjoy your trip, give Athena a million hugs.
Machka - beautiful hair color!
Make it a fabulous day, ladies!

Allie, congrats on finding a solution to your bed dilemma and at a lower price. Please don't lose sight of how much Carmine is hurting and struggling with their personal demons and always come from a place of love.
Debbie, Stick to your guns about your MIL. Her toxic behaviour is the reason no one is there for her at her time of need. It's not your job to fix and care for her, nor is it your husband's . Take care of yourself and continue to be loving but don't be a door mat.
As I listen to all the stories about yard care, I am so grateful for the decision Jake made in 2011 to move to a house with far less yard care required. We have just enough to keep ourselves entertained during the growing season.

Debbie, God Bless YOU! I couldn't do daycare (and I actually did try it once when the girls were really small), much less be a full-time caregiver! You stick to your guns! (Barbie, you and I are from the same era) And now the cat... when it rains, huh? Hope you slept well.
Welcome Debra! Jump on in!
Weekend's here for me. Not much planned. Freddy is on a fishing trip. Kids are off doing their things. I'm headed down to New Ulm to visit a friend for a couple hours today, but not much else. Have a great one!

Debbie ~ I agree with the others concerning your mother-in-law. You are an angel!
Very high 90's here today and the air conditioning in our rental house has gone out. DH called at least 10 repair places and no one can come until next Tuesday at the earliest. Renter is not happy!

Got an email from Saga just after lunch. The ship was late leaving Cadiz, so they have had to switch its arrival port from Dover to Portsmouth. That is closer to us. It means a massive reschedule for them. All the car transport etc and they say they are doing the itinerary in reverse order! That means going directly to Iceland and starting in the south and going clockwise. Then Orkney at the end. Oh my! The phones must be red hot!
It doesn't matter much to us, though I see from my Marine Tracker that the ship is not berthing until 12 instead of 9 as expected, so our car will be later on Sunday. It was coming just after lunch.
It may mean that we get that leg of our transport refunded, because you get a private car if you are less than 75 miles from the port. We paid extra for a private car because Dover is further than that. The ship is coming back to Dover.
I would not want to be the person in charge of redoing all the schedule. Resupplying the ship etc.
So, I try to relax.......

Heather, what a massive mess for the cruise line. You are handling the change of plans for yourself with great grace. I applaud you.
My cousin in NYC (my mother's generation) was an outspoken opinionated woman who alienated many in her lifetime. She was left financially well off when her husband died in 1987 but she frittered her money away on many poor choices including betting on the horses and by the time her health started to fail she had little money and I was the only person still talking to her besides a few of the neighbors in her apartment building in Manhattan. At one time I agreed to come to NYC and help her move near me, find her a place to live, and keep an eye on her but she had so many objections to the plan that it just went away. She spent the last years of her life in a nursing home with no say over what happened to her condo or her possessions. I called her every day for the rest of her life. For whatever reason, the name she gave to the nursing home in case of emergency was another cousin's husband who was a banker so he was notified of her death, not me. The only reason I found out was that I called that day and the kind nurse who took the call told me that she had passed. Some people create their own bad fortune.
My friend is coming over today for an hour of line dance. Yippee

Silly me! I wished by brothers, son, and son-in-law a happy Father’s Day LAST WEEK! Lol my brothers got back at me as brothers do…. I’ll try again this week.
I would LOVE to travel but DH is a home body. I was in my glory the first year we had the camper. No drinking and exploring the country. But then, money ran out and we decided to do this hosting thing. I enjoy doing this but really really want to get back on the road. We have lifetime passes for New Mexico parks and the lifetime pass for national parks so could travel economically. BUT DH doesn’t want to give up his shop here at Bottomless. So here we are 5 years later in the same place. I do like it here but would like to travel. 2 trips last year to visit family by me alone bringing on much resentment by DH about money spent and family ( his do not talk at all). Jealousy mostly, so I limit those.
Sorry folks just dreaming on going to visit each and every one of you from the North Pole to Australia!

I did my yoga and fast marching. Yay!
I gained half a pound last week. I had three days way over calories when my cousin was here. So that's fair.

Hello I didn't get to the board, but I have tracked my food for the last two days. Things are going well.
We have been doing a lot of big remodeling projects here and now it's time to start the master bath. It will be taken down to the studs. I have been to the two tile places the builder sent me and OMG is that overwhelming! I'm going back again today with hubby in tow. Both places have nice, but very different things.
My younger daughter Alena is engaged. We are very happy and love her fiancé. She's kind of a polite bridezilla though. We have been to a dozen places and none of them are what she wants. A friend of mine said that what she wants is a chorus of white cats to sing songs to her. That gives you an idea.
Those of you who know me and my animals may not know we now have a dog. OMG it's a 1-year old beagle. And she is a MESS. We have had all these special needs animals (Benny Beagle, anyone?) so decided we each would get a purebred dog of our favorite breed while we are young enough to commit to a puppy. So Bella Beagle is my mess. She's more work than the dog with 192 pills a week. Everything you read about difficulties with beagles is TRUE!
She is adorable though. And lots of fun and energetic craziness!
DH had his second shoulder replacement a month ago which went way better than the first. This fall he plans to get his dog...an English Staffordshire terrier. It's the "mini pit bull." He used to raise them.
We also have 3 cats and one of them is very naughty and she and Bella I swear plan naughty adventures.
OK that's it for today. I plan to keep plugging along. It's nice to read what all of you have been up to!
Take care, Meg from Omaha11 -
Barbie - Thank you for the compliment. I'm more concerned about the poor devils who are manning the phones and rearranging everything!
Just now Saga phoned us. A very nice woman told us our pick up is now 5 pm and the ship is leaving at midnight.(It's usually late afternoon). I asked about food. She said the bar area at the back of the ship will be open and food avaliable. I expect there will be snacks and drinks at the boarding point too. I suggested to DH that we have a substantial snack at around 4 pm and have something in our carry on, just in case!
I asked about my possible refund, but also took the time to thank the woman for her work and expressed my appreciation for how difficult it must have been for everyone. She said it had been very difficult.
So..... more packing time! I did my jewellery this afternoon. Did toiletries and meds this morning. I found my 'clicker' that I use to keep track of laps run/walked around the deck. The battery is still working! You soon run out of fingers when you are doing laps!
Also found my motion sensitive night light for the bathroom. No idea if the battery works as it's still in the packet. Bought for the first cancelled cruise in 2020.
I also rang my friend L. Still in a bad way. Hip very painful. Hasn't seen anyone since Monday, though she has some visitors next week. Not sleeping. Drinking. And her eye has wet macula degeneration and is getting worse. The hospital can't see her until next Friday. Sounds awful. She can hardly read.
She will come out of it eventually, but being alone isn't helping. Her alcoholic sister is visiting in July. Dread to think.
Oh well. I've done my best. I find it's hard to know what to say. Any news about my life feels as if I am rubbing salt in the wound.

Cool and drizzly here. I have my menus and grocery list done and will head out soon to get groceries for the week. I have an appointment with ortho Monday morning for my ankle. Doubt they will recommend surgery but we will see.
Heather - you are being very gracious about the changes in schedule but I bet there are many who are not.
Barbie - there are times like now when I wish we had a smaller place but I would miss having the horses and goats right out the back door.
Rita - sorry you are stuck in one spot. Any chance of smaller day trips or weekend getaways?
Everyone take care, Sue in WA

Barbara, I just heard back from the road building contractor, he's going to come out one of these days and check it out for regraveling. He's booked into October. Will let you know what I find out.
Barbie - you made a very wise move with your place. If I didn't have help or was physically unable to keep up with this "wilderness" I'd be searching for a spot similar to yours. There are some in our community, big waiting list right now.

Meg-I'm with you on the overwhelming nature of re-modeling anything. When I had my bathroom torn down to the studs, the worst part was picking out tile. Next worst was paint. We are now starting the re-construction process on our front yard area. We will tile it and I'm dreading going to the tile store.
I have a friend who has 7 beagles. He treats them as if they are his kids, down to putting party hats on them and celebrating each one's birthday.
Heather-Have a great cruise.

Thank you!!
I just got home from sitting there since 7:30 this morning. I did take her dog for a 30 min walk which was great. DH called and woke me up this morning, saying she was really altered. She was fine when I got there. My thought is, she was having nightmares(she has said her friends, that are all dead, have been coming to see her- )woke up screaming and crying which freaked dh out. He told me later she also didn't smoke any cigerettes yesterday afternoon or evening and she is smoking usually at least a pack a day so I am sure that didn't help with her bad dreams.
I sat while he ran some errands and she slept in her chair. For just a moment, I saw her open her eyes, look up towards the ceiling and with this wonderful sweet smile(something I have never seen on her ever in the past 33yrs), just lasted a few seconds then she closed her eyes and went back to sleep. She was talking a little in her sleep but was calm.
Dh feels he has to be there all the time, unless he is at work and he is calling in which he never does, because it is his "duty"- he is the only one left- there is no other family. One older brother who is in a home in Okinawa who doesn't talk to her and a niece who barely talks to her(she is in Osaka) because MIL accused her of stealing her jewelry when she came to visit 10 yrs ago.
We will be hiring someone to help. We just don't know the extent yet.
Good news is she is really liking the commode chair so she doesn't have to go up or down stairs so many times during the night.
If she was calmer in the evenings and let dh nap he could handle it but evenings seem to be the time she is the meanest- yelling at him, etc(he also says she is yelling but sometimes just talking loud but yes, sometimes yelling- they both get loud)
Has anyone else dealt with people who have "visitors from beyond" not very long before they pass away??
My FIL and dh's aunt(FIL's sister) both did. They would see them, talk to them.
MIL is sure she is going to die soon.
My friend is meeting me at the Wetlands at 6 so we can walk for an hour or so. Hoping MIL is calm and I can stay home and he can stay there and go to work for a few hours. She will be fine is she acts tonight like she was all day today. Very calm, slept most of the time.
Rushed out this morning before I even had my tea- finally having it now- a bit late, hope it doesn't keep me awake-
IF I have to go over there tonight, I will be sure to bring my own pillow and blanket and some snacks.
He knows I am busy baking tomorrow for dessert auction at church Sunday so I won't be hanging out over there. I will go walk Kobe but that is it. Church on Sunday so no walk for the dog(at least not by me.) Monday, I will take my daycare girl with me to walk him.
Dh works tonight and then is off until midnight Tues. night/Wed. morning for a full shift. His only full shift for the week.
Have a great weekend ladies.

Carla- I have either taught preschool or did daycare for over 40 yrs now. The younger the better for me, including 3 month old preemie triplets that I had 55hrs a week for 5 yrs.
Now I just have one 5 yr old which, yes, I would love to not have her but not if it means trading her to take care of MIL-5 -

Yup the boy is sore and he has a 10k run on Sunday4 -
Debbie- does MIL have dementia- she is probably sundowning and if she is getting really delusional might have a UTI ,it happens in the elderly alot..
Good luck i remember taking care of both my in laws
Pip- gee im hoping Kirby didn't hurt himself to bad.. and wont be to sore for the run on Sunday.
Carmine is done for the summer and onto 9th grade.
Tracy made oatmeal for Miles and she sent me a video i was hysterical, she couldnt feed him fast enough.. that little guy is going to be a foodie lol.5 -
Worked today but I got out late so I didn’t go to the soup kitchen. Seems I need to rinse the lettuce longer.
Debra – welcome!
Lanette – MIL and FIL used this attorney to make up the Trusts probably about 30 years ago. He’s in FL and every time we go down there we’re amazed that he’s still alive. When he did the trusts he was no spring chicken but he’s still going strong! We had to get some paperwork done when MIL passed. Glad your attorney is going to keep you on.
Meg – congrats to Alena
pip – I hope Kirby wasn’t seriously injured.
Flea – doing a happy dance for you
Debbie – It sounds to me like your MIL might be sundowning. My MIL used to “see” FIL at her condo, even tho he never was there.
Michele NC2 -
Debbie -- my mil did have visions of the dead for a few weeks before she passed. They were like dreams, I guess, but very real to her.
I'm sorry you are having to go through this. Your mil is very lucky to have you and your hubby around.
