July total: 10/110 Miles
7/2: 10 miles
I ran my longest summertime run ever today. Mapped out a long out and back that turned around at the lake. I committed to walking the steepest hills which made for a slow last couple of miles. But it helped my legs not feel dead and kept my HR out of zone 5 in some pretty hot conditions.
Now for a lazy afternoon of watching TV on the couch.

Hey everyone! My July long form podcast (and by long I mean like 15 to 20 minutes 🤣) is going to be about runners and weight/strength training. I haven't figured out exactly what I'm gonna cover so spam me with what you'd want to hear about!5

Another morning with little to zero energy in the legs but I got out for 5 miles. I was light-headed for a couple of hours when I got back home. Not sure what that’s about as the temp was only 64F but with 93% humidity. I had a Verb Energy bar before I went out which is more than I usually have on a morning run.
Happy (belated) to pretty boy Hobbes!
I love seeing everyone’s pictures from where they run.
Hope everyone in the US is having a nice, long Independence Day weekend!

Hi all. So lovely to see a busy thread!
I will try to do 100 kms this month with a mix of walking, jogging, hiking and incline treadmill jogging.
Did 4.5 k yesterday, and about the same today. 9 k so far.8 -
Testing the ticker.

I'm confused: Why is this thread in some months in Groups, and in some here?
Anyway, after running 80km last month, which was at that moment too much for me I'm setting a goal for 70km. Had a break on Friday because I needed it and walked 17km yesterday. Running starts again tonight.4 -
Forgot to record where my ticker was, so I am replacing it here! D'oh

Today's plan called for a 12 mile long run - 1 mi Z1, 10.5 mi Z2, .5mi Z1. I decided to go to a park near the river to run to mix up the scenery. I didn't set an alarm to get up early, so I started much later than planned, and it ended up going from 75 to 90 degrees while I was out there. It helped that most of the trails are in the shade. However, during the last three miles, I had to walk more and more to keep my HR in Z2. Oh well, miles are complete. I will have to do better with getting up earlier when it is cool for my long runs moving forward.

Here we go!
03.06 4.01km in 7.52/km 14 stride repeats
Whoa, just about made it. It just started to thunder outside and the evening sun is suddenly gone. First run this month after a rest day (running 4 days, incl 2 longer runs was too much) and a 17km hike yesterday. Goal for this month will be 70km as 80km might just have been a bit too much last month. Also have a serial lactate/performance test this month to check for some health problems. Lets see what comes out of that.
4.01/70km, 2.8km behind target.6 -
July total: 14/110 Miles
7/2: 10 miles
7/3: 4 miles
Went to the nature preserve trail for my recovery run today. My quads were sore after 10 miles on the hills yesterday so I set out with the goal of keeping my HR down and actually recovering. Kept my average HR below 140, walked basically every uphill and a few extra walk breaks towards the end. Legs were definitely tired so probably a good idea to take it easy today. We’ll see how they feel tomorrow. 1 more run on the hills before heading home.7 -
July has gotten off to a fab start. Headed away with a few girlfriends to Waihi Beach. The weather was stunning, if a bit cold, and we got a trail run in on the Kaimai Ranges on the Saturday and a coastal run on the Sunday.
View from the bach on a cold winter's evening
We went for a walk and I was convinced to go barefoot. Needless to say I soon lost all feeling in my feet, which then took a long hot soak to thaw!
Saturday was a loop, 11km long. We chose to go in the recommended anticlockwise direction and have 8.5km steadily up for 450 metres then 2.5km rather abruptly down. Quite a technical trail - loads of roots and rocks, a number of fallen trees and a couple of stream crossings, and some breathtaking vertical drops off the side of the trail. Really remote, so if something had gone wrong help would have been a long time coming, consequently, we took it carefully. Took us 2.5 hours, with stops for photos.
We started fairly high - this is the view from the carpark.
This was one log we had to go under - no option to scramble over. What you can't see is the trail behind this is straight up out of a stream crossing.
Sunday's coastal run was one I've done a number of times - it's gorgeous. Didn't go as far as we usually do, choosing instead to come back and then run inland, up to the trig behind the town. Didn't feel anywhere near as tough as Saturday, but I see the elevation was still 375 metres so plenty of climbing. Total distance was 13km, which took an hour and a half, which gives you an idea of Saturday's technicality.
There were loads of fantails flitting about at the summit but they wouldn't stay still for a photo.
And today, we rest.8 -
July Goal: 110 Miles
7/1: 2.02 miles
7/3: 10.26 miles
12.28/110 miles completed for July
I didn't run yesterday but I did get a mile walk in for the streak. I took the dogs so it was pretty leisurely since it was already getting warm and I tried to keep them on the grass as much as possible.
This morning I got out about 6:30. It was already warm and humid, but I had nice 10 mile run. I saw a couple of deer. I haven't seen many deer lately. There were a few dogs out, but none of them bothered me. There are usually dogs loose on "fireworks" holidays.
@ContraryMaryMary Those photos are lovely. Looks like a wonderful weekend.

Thanks everyone for the Hobbes well wishes! I just love that pup and hope he stays happy and goofy for many more years!
@Mari33a - The cake is carrot, peanut butter and blueberry with Greek yogurt, peanut butter frosting and those are little doggie treats on top.
@marisap2010 - he surprised me this year allowing the hat to stay on for pictures and for eating his cake. Normally he would knock it off immediately.
@martaindale - beautiful picture of the lake! I love the clouds!
@AlphaHowls - What a beautiful sunrise! Wow!
@Mau_Hutch - welcome!
@yirara - this discussion has typically been under Challenges but every once in a while it gets started in the wrong place (last month in Groups). When that happens we can request to have it moved but that just seems like too much work so we just left it. Just make sure you get the link from the current month when it is posted and then bookmark it so you don't have to hunt for it.
@ContraryMaryMary - what a gorgeous area to run and hike!
It was so much cooler today that I took Hobbes out for a run with me. I don't think it even hit 75F but he got overheated so I stopped a few times in the shade to let him cool down. On one of the stops a tiny hummingbird flew out of a tree like it was looking me in the face. It then started spinning and twirling in front of me like a tiny dancer. When I stopped to get Hobbes some water and discovered the fountain was not working we met a Park Ranger out walking the trail. I don't think many people stop to talk to him and he seemed a little wary of Hobbes at first but when he realized Hobbes was so friendly he sat on the ground to love up on him. When we got to a working fountain I doused Hobbes with some water from the drinking fountain before we left the trail to head for home and that seemed to perk him up. He did lie down in a neighbor's grass that had just been mown. The man was using an edger and Hobbes just flopped down and wouldn't get up. Fortunately the man thought it was hilarious and didn't mind having his work interrupted. I finally had to use a treat to get Hobbes to move again. We got in just over 6 miles bringing my total to 12.31 miles.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit cooler than today so I will get out for another run. Hopefully I can get Hobbes out for at least part of it. When he is tired the fireworks don't bother him quite so much.

Happy 4th to those in/from the US.
We're still up by the lake, heading home tonight. It has done me SO much good to just disconnect from all the crap for a couple of days. My legs and especially knees were pretty sore from Saturday's run but some very slow gentle laps in the pool and yoga for tired legs yesterday worked, so this morning I headed out around 8.15. Plan on Mondays is around 3 miles with speedwork/stairs/hill repeats. Today should really have been intervals, but not wanting to aggravate my knees and having spotted a suitable hill the other day I warmed up for a couple of km, 4x reps on the hill which was exactly 1 km then snother 2 to cool down. Then I came back to the campsite, stretched, had breakfast, did some yoga, 10 lengths of the pool, now sitting with a beer.
I rather wish I could just stay here forever! Will definitely be coming back.
When my trail club failed to attract any other women and/or slow but consistent runners I joined another club but haven't actually managed to run with them yet as they're based in ths city half an hour away and I hate driving lol.
But this Wednesday they've posted as an event on facebook they're doing an 8km loop with 450m of vert in the evening which would be an awesome training session and a chance to kearn a new route, so I'm going to try and overcome the social anxiety/I'm too slow/how do I talk to people? stuff and go along 😅 Trying to persuade a girl I've run a couple of timez with to come hold my hand lolol

@ContraryMaryMary I love your pictures!
@eleanorhawkins I get anxious running with others too sometimes. I hope you go and that you really enjoy it!
Today is rest day following yesterday's long run. I may go for a short walk or do some yoga later for some active recovery.
Also, Happy 4th to everyone in the U.S.!5 -
Thx for the welcome! @shanaber
Happy to be here. Love the busy thread and the support. The pictures from your runs that you post are inspirational!
Happy 4th to America today! Enjoy the special day.
(And Happy Canada day to me a few days ago!)
I screwed up ticker saving TWICE. Duh! First I forgot to copy the address, next after an update I thought the png was the address, so replaced it, losing the real address. Think I've got it now though:

Awesome running and beautiful pics @ContraryMaryMary!
Same goes for you @martaindale 😁
Welcome @Mau_Hutch. Not sure how many other Canadians are here, but great that you are representing 😃
Have had a hot July 4th weekend. But we have been outside enjoying live music and fireworks each night. Infinite Journey (Journey cover band) was awesome Saturday night. Several bands yesterday at the horse races, and tonight Randy Rogers band.
I was really done with the heat, so opted for the A/C and treadmill yesterday for 5 miles.
