WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the June 2022 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10865741/june-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until July 1, 2022 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

I'm in for 110 miles. I am going to Hawaii with my family for a week and not planning on doing any running. I'll probably pack 1-2 running outfits just in case but I don't put runs in my calendar when I'm on vacation.9
-
Thanks, @martaindale !
I'm in for 180 miles this month. I'm actually hoping for 200 but with several niggles going on (foot, hip, knee) I don't to push it if one of those issues flares up.7 -
Thanks @martaindale! Hawaii sounds awesome!!!
I might miss another long run again this month (anniversary month) but I'll try to keep my goal at 125.7 -
400 miles is goal, 31 days means I can try to edge a little more in.10
-
Thanks for setting us up @martaindale. I'm going to set my goal at 110 miles for July.6
-
My goal for July is 70 miles. I haven't made goal the past couple of months due to hiking on the weekends instead of longer runs, but it's all good!6
-
I'm in for 75 miles this month with a stretch goal of 100. It really depends on how hot it gets!6
-
I haven't added the mileage on my plan up but will be slowly extending runs this month in preparation for the terrifying months of August and September. Excited but wary of what my grumpy old legs are going to have to say about more miles and more mountains.7
-
I’m here. No specific goals. Thinking of running the Melbourne Half while I’m there later in the month.6
-
Hi everyone! I'll be here following along. No specific goal this month.6

Going to aim for 30 miles for the month. Dakota's been coming with me on all my runs and gets hyper excited when I put on my running gear jumping around and barking, so I confused him today by wearing my dressing gown over my clothes until I was ready to go out the door. He was suspicious though when I put on my watch and whinged a bit.
01/07 2.60 miles
Total 2.60/30 miles
@7lenny7 - Good luck for your race this weekend!6 -
No goals here. Just gonna get what I can. We will be camping in King's Canyon for a week so I won't be running that week.6
-
@Mari33a - love that Dakota is so excited to go out with you! Hobbes used too be that way but no he just follows me around if he wants to go but just as often he curls up on the couch and refuses to go. I typically coerce him to at least go for a walk if not th entire run.
Hope the weather is nice for you in Kings Canyon @RunsOnEspresso! You may want to get in a trail run or two while you are there!
I got out for a nice solo run today (Hobbes had a birthday hangover 😁). It was 70F when I headed out but quickly rose to over 80. That ball of fire in the sky really seems to want to just turn me into a pile of ash. I did my 60/30 run intervals and managed 5.5 miles before I hit my neighborhood coming home. I stopped my watch and walked the remaining distance home for a total of 6.22 miles.
We are supposed to have a few days of pretty cool weather at least in the mornings (marine layer - YAY!) and then back to triple digits.
Just give me the cake already!8 -
22km round this lake we're staying by to start off the month. My husband wasn't amused that I got up at 6 to go run on our first morning here lol. What I thought was a trail was actually pretty much a dirt road that went most of the way round what oughf to be the edge of the lack, but drought means I was miles away from wafer for a lot of the time. Still lovely though, I had the world to myself apart from birds and lots of hares. The last bit wasn't so nice, the only way across the dam and back up to the campsite was to join the road. I think next time we come I'll go the other way round... start off down the road before there's as much traffic and then go round anticlockwise.
Looking forward to lunch and a siesta now6 -
July Goal: 110 Miles
7/1: 2.02 miles
2.02/110 miles completed for July
I started July off with a quick 2 miles yesterday morning. It was already pretty warm. I did see 3 jackrabbits in the cemetery. July is another streak month. The streak is just at least one mile per day running or walking. The last couple of times I just counted running, but this time I will count walking too. I have my family reunion this month plus I am going to my daughter's for a couple of days so getting a run in might be difficult but a walk shouldn't be a problem. I think today I will just walk and not run so I can be rested for my long run on Sunday.
@shanaber Happy Birthday to Hobbes!
5 -
@shanaber Hobbs looks like he enjoyed his birthday! He is such a distinguished gentleman 😁🎂🎉
Nice run around the lake @eleanorhawkins
11 miles this morning. Just another HOT HUMID Texas summer morning run. Nothing surprising.
3 -
I am in for 100 this month. Decided to work on speed again so wish me luck. LOL.
Jul 1 - 4.02, 9:44
Jul 2 - 4.02, 9:28
Happy Birthday to Hobbes as well and looking forward to the race reports from this weekend. Have a great vacation EH!3 -
I hope you have a great time in Hawaii, @martaindale! I hope to visit sometime.
Aww, happy birthday Hobbes! So cute! I could never get either of mine to sit there with a hat!
I worked late yesterday, so I missed my run, but I did both runs from yesterday and today this morning.
First was hill repeats (5 min Z1, 5 min Z2, 12x 30s Z5 uphill and 1:30 Z1 downhill, 5 min Z1). Today I was scheduled for 40 minutes in Z1 as a recovery after hills and before tomorrow's long run. Total was 4.75 miles.
I hit 92.3 miles last month, so I will set a goal of 100 this month, but I anticipate it will be quite a bit higher since my long runs will be getting into HM+ distances.

July total: 10/110 Miles
7/2: 10 miles
I ran my longest summertime run ever today. Mapped out a long out and back that turned around at the lake. I committed to walking the steepest hills which made for a slow last couple of miles. But it helped my legs not feel dead and kept my HR out of zone 5 in some pretty hot conditions.
Now for a lazy afternoon of watching TV on the couch.
10 -
7/1 15.14 miles
7/2 16.24 miles
My sunrise this morning, out at the county line

This month I'm in for 110.5 km
01/07 - 5km (didn't run.... great start to the month!!!)
02/07 - 9.5km (9.6km done. More of a walk with running breaks but I covered the planned distance pretty close to planned time!)
05/07 - 5km
07/07 - 5km
09/07 - 11.5km
12/07 - 5km
14/07 - 6.5km
16/07 - 8km
19/07 - 5km
21/07 - 6.5km
23/07 - 14.5km
26/07 - 5km
28/07 - 8km
30/07 - 16km

Hey everyone! My July long form podcast (and by long I mean like 15 to 20 minutes 🤣) is going to be about runners and weight/strength training. I haven't figured out exactly what I'm gonna cover so spam me with what you'd want to hear about!5
-
Another morning with little to zero energy in the legs but I got out for 5 miles. I was light-headed for a couple of hours when I got back home. Not sure what that’s about as the temp was only 64F but with 93% humidity. I had a Verb Energy bar before I went out which is more than I usually have on a morning run.
Happy (belated) to pretty boy Hobbes!
I love seeing everyone’s pictures from where they run.
Hope everyone in the US is having a nice, long Independence Day weekend!

Hi all. So lovely to see a busy thread!
I will try to do 100 kms this month with a mix of walking, jogging, hiking and incline treadmill jogging.
Did 4.5 k yesterday, and about the same today. 9 k so far.8 -
Testing the ticker.
[/url]3 -
I'm confused: Why is this thread in some months in Groups, and in some here?
Anyway, after running 80km last month, which was at that moment too much for me I'm setting a goal for 70km. Had a break on Friday because I needed it and walked 17km yesterday. Running starts again tonight.4 -
Forgot to record where my ticker was, so I am replacing it here! D'oh

Today's plan called for a 12 mile long run - 1 mi Z1, 10.5 mi Z2, .5mi Z1. I decided to go to a park near the river to run to mix up the scenery. I didn't set an alarm to get up early, so I started much later than planned, and it ended up going from 75 to 90 degrees while I was out there. It helped that most of the trails are in the shade. However, during the last three miles, I had to walk more and more to keep my HR in Z2. Oh well, miles are complete. I will have to do better with getting up earlier when it is cool for my long runs moving forward.
