Here we go!
03.06 4.01km in 7.52/km 14 stride repeats
Whoa, just about made it. It just started to thunder outside and the evening sun is suddenly gone. First run this month after a rest day (running 4 days, incl 2 longer runs was too much) and a 17km hike yesterday. Goal for this month will be 70km as 80km might just have been a bit too much last month. Also have a serial lactate/performance test this month to check for some health problems. Lets see what comes out of that.
4.01/70km, 2.8km behind target.6 -
July total: 14/110 Miles
7/2: 10 miles
7/3: 4 miles
Went to the nature preserve trail for my recovery run today. My quads were sore after 10 miles on the hills yesterday so I set out with the goal of keeping my HR down and actually recovering. Kept my average HR below 140, walked basically every uphill and a few extra walk breaks towards the end. Legs were definitely tired so probably a good idea to take it easy today. We’ll see how they feel tomorrow. 1 more run on the hills before heading home.7 -
July has gotten off to a fab start. Headed away with a few girlfriends to Waihi Beach. The weather was stunning, if a bit cold, and we got a trail run in on the Kaimai Ranges on the Saturday and a coastal run on the Sunday.
View from the bach on a cold winter's evening
We went for a walk and I was convinced to go barefoot. Needless to say I soon lost all feeling in my feet, which then took a long hot soak to thaw!
Saturday was a loop, 11km long. We chose to go in the recommended anticlockwise direction and have 8.5km steadily up for 450 metres then 2.5km rather abruptly down. Quite a technical trail - loads of roots and rocks, a number of fallen trees and a couple of stream crossings, and some breathtaking vertical drops off the side of the trail. Really remote, so if something had gone wrong help would have been a long time coming, consequently, we took it carefully. Took us 2.5 hours, with stops for photos.
We started fairly high - this is the view from the carpark.
This was one log we had to go under - no option to scramble over. What you can't see is the trail behind this is straight up out of a stream crossing.
Sunday's coastal run was one I've done a number of times - it's gorgeous. Didn't go as far as we usually do, choosing instead to come back and then run inland, up to the trig behind the town. Didn't feel anywhere near as tough as Saturday, but I see the elevation was still 375 metres so plenty of climbing. Total distance was 13km, which took an hour and a half, which gives you an idea of Saturday's technicality.
There were loads of fantails flitting about at the summit but they wouldn't stay still for a photo.
And today, we rest.8 -
July Goal: 110 Miles
7/1: 2.02 miles
7/3: 10.26 miles
12.28/110 miles completed for July
I didn't run yesterday but I did get a mile walk in for the streak. I took the dogs so it was pretty leisurely since it was already getting warm and I tried to keep them on the grass as much as possible.
This morning I got out about 6:30. It was already warm and humid, but I had nice 10 mile run. I saw a couple of deer. I haven't seen many deer lately. There were a few dogs out, but none of them bothered me. There are usually dogs loose on "fireworks" holidays.
@ContraryMaryMary Those photos are lovely. Looks like a wonderful weekend.

Thanks everyone for the Hobbes well wishes! I just love that pup and hope he stays happy and goofy for many more years!
@Mari33a - The cake is carrot, peanut butter and blueberry with Greek yogurt, peanut butter frosting and those are little doggie treats on top.
@marisap2010 - he surprised me this year allowing the hat to stay on for pictures and for eating his cake. Normally he would knock it off immediately.
@martaindale - beautiful picture of the lake! I love the clouds!
@AlphaHowls - What a beautiful sunrise! Wow!
@Mau_Hutch - welcome!
@yirara - this discussion has typically been under Challenges but every once in a while it gets started in the wrong place (last month in Groups). When that happens we can request to have it moved but that just seems like too much work so we just left it. Just make sure you get the link from the current month when it is posted and then bookmark it so you don't have to hunt for it.
@ContraryMaryMary - what a gorgeous area to run and hike!
It was so much cooler today that I took Hobbes out for a run with me. I don't think it even hit 75F but he got overheated so I stopped a few times in the shade to let him cool down. On one of the stops a tiny hummingbird flew out of a tree like it was looking me in the face. It then started spinning and twirling in front of me like a tiny dancer. When I stopped to get Hobbes some water and discovered the fountain was not working we met a Park Ranger out walking the trail. I don't think many people stop to talk to him and he seemed a little wary of Hobbes at first but when he realized Hobbes was so friendly he sat on the ground to love up on him. When we got to a working fountain I doused Hobbes with some water from the drinking fountain before we left the trail to head for home and that seemed to perk him up. He did lie down in a neighbor's grass that had just been mown. The man was using an edger and Hobbes just flopped down and wouldn't get up. Fortunately the man thought it was hilarious and didn't mind having his work interrupted. I finally had to use a treat to get Hobbes to move again. We got in just over 6 miles bringing my total to 12.31 miles.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit cooler than today so I will get out for another run. Hopefully I can get Hobbes out for at least part of it. When he is tired the fireworks don't bother him quite so much.

Happy 4th to those in/from the US.
We're still up by the lake, heading home tonight. It has done me SO much good to just disconnect from all the crap for a couple of days. My legs and especially knees were pretty sore from Saturday's run but some very slow gentle laps in the pool and yoga for tired legs yesterday worked, so this morning I headed out around 8.15. Plan on Mondays is around 3 miles with speedwork/stairs/hill repeats. Today should really have been intervals, but not wanting to aggravate my knees and having spotted a suitable hill the other day I warmed up for a couple of km, 4x reps on the hill which was exactly 1 km then snother 2 to cool down. Then I came back to the campsite, stretched, had breakfast, did some yoga, 10 lengths of the pool, now sitting with a beer.
I rather wish I could just stay here forever! Will definitely be coming back.
When my trail club failed to attract any other women and/or slow but consistent runners I joined another club but haven't actually managed to run with them yet as they're based in ths city half an hour away and I hate driving lol.
But this Wednesday they've posted as an event on facebook they're doing an 8km loop with 450m of vert in the evening which would be an awesome training session and a chance to kearn a new route, so I'm going to try and overcome the social anxiety/I'm too slow/how do I talk to people? stuff and go along 😅 Trying to persuade a girl I've run a couple of timez with to come hold my hand lolol

@ContraryMaryMary I love your pictures!
@eleanorhawkins I get anxious running with others too sometimes. I hope you go and that you really enjoy it!
Today is rest day following yesterday's long run. I may go for a short walk or do some yoga later for some active recovery.
Also, Happy 4th to everyone in the U.S.!5 -
Thx for the welcome! @shanaber
Happy to be here. Love the busy thread and the support. The pictures from your runs that you post are inspirational!
Happy 4th to America today! Enjoy the special day.
(And Happy Canada day to me a few days ago!)
I screwed up ticker saving TWICE. Duh! First I forgot to copy the address, next after an update I thought the png was the address, so replaced it, losing the real address. Think I've got it now though:

Awesome running and beautiful pics @ContraryMaryMary!
Same goes for you @martaindale 😁
Welcome @Mau_Hutch. Not sure how many other Canadians are here, but great that you are representing 😃
Have had a hot July 4th weekend. But we have been outside enjoying live music and fireworks each night. Infinite Journey (Journey cover band) was awesome Saturday night. Several bands yesterday at the horse races, and tonight Randy Rogers band.
I was really done with the heat, so opted for the A/C and treadmill yesterday for 5 miles.

July total: 24.3/110 Miles
7/2: 10 miles
7/3: 4 miles
7/4: 5.2 miles
7/5: 5.1 miles
Logging 2 this morning. Before we left the hill country yesterday I went out for a 5 mile hilly run. My legs mostly felt back to normal and got lucky with some decent cloud cover. Today, Another 5 miles in the mega humidity. Went down to the neighborhood trail for a nice recovery run. Legs are feeling better after a nice flat run.
@ContraryMaryMary Stunning scenery! What a pretty place to explore!
Welcome to @Mau_Hutch! Hope your family recovers quickly!

July Goal: 110 Miles
7/1: 2.02 miles
7/3: 10.26 miles
7/5: 6.02 miles
18.30/110 miles completed for July
It was 80°F this morning at 5:30. I managed a decent 6 mile run. It was uneventful, just hot. I was called for jury duty today. We are on a lunch break. They still haven't finished selecting the jury yet. I am still hoping to be dismissed. I am about to have to put my phone away. Hopefully I won't have to stay here much longer.

I ran 6 miles this morning followed by a 2-mile walk. Then I spent the day breaking beans and canning them with my mom. Hope everyone in the US had a wonderful holiday!
Absolutely love your weekend scenery @Contrary_MaryMary!4 -
Wanted to run this morning, but late night festivities last night tanked those plans. So just ran 6 treadmill miles after work. Hopefully I can pull myself out of bed tomorrow morning and run
7 -
4.05 miles this morning before work. Plan called for a "fast finish" - 5 min Z1, 30 min Z2, 12 min Z3. It was very humid, but at least I beat the heat (it was 74 at 5:30). I had hoped to go to my Pump class tonight, but I got a work call at the end of the day, and I ended up running too late to make it. I am going to try to do at least 20 min of strength training tonight to somewhat make up for it.
I started meal prepping this weekend, trying to somewhat follow Matt Fitzgerald's hierarchy of foods and trying to eat more whole foods vs. processed foods. I felt so good when I did it before, but you know, Cheez-its called my name, and it all went downhill from there.5 -
Thanks for setting up July @martaindale . A trip to Hawaii sounds lovely. Enjoy! Great job on your 10 mile run. That lake is so pretty!
Great running around the lake @eleanorhawkins . Sounds like a plan to run it in reverse next time.
Beautiful sunrise @AlphaHowls !
@Teresa502 I hope you are feeling better. You did great to not have any energy. Great run today. Mom did some beans yesterday, but not enough to can, so she froze them.
Welcome @Mau-Hutch ! I hope your husband and son have mild cases and get well soon AND that you don't get it.
Great run @marisap2010 . I don't blame you for walking a lot those last 3 miles with those temps! Great job on your fast finish run. Hahaha about the Chez-its calling your name.
Wow @ContraryMaryMary ! Stunning views from your runs/hike.
@eleanorhawkins I hope the new running group works out for you. I'm with you on the not wanting to drive very far to run, so completely understand. I hope your friend will go to to relieve some of your anxiety about meeting new people.
@AlphaHowls Happy Belated Birthday to your mom. Such a beautiful place to run.
Looks like you are sticking to your plan really well @Sparx_81 ! Great running.
@kgirlhart Nice job getting your run in before jury duty. I hope you were dismissed.
Great treadmill run after work @Scott6255 . I find it hard to run long distances after work.
I got back from my Florida vacation yesterday afternoon. I caught up with last month and thins months thread this afternoon. Great running everyone...even if we didn't make goal, we did better than those sitting on the couch.
I haven't had time to figure out a goal for this month. I had planned to sign up for a destination 10K the first weekend in August, but never did. There really aren't many around here. The closest one seems to be in Knoxville - an hour away. I'll have to decide if I want to sign up for it or not. If not, I'll just do a 10K on my own. I had 3 extra weeks in my 10K plan before running it. So, I think I'll just run what I feel like this week and pick back up with my plan where I left off next week. I'll check that out and post my goal later.
I did at least walk 1 fast mile every day I was on vacation. A couple were on the beach, which made it a lot harder than I expected it to. I did manage one run on the sidewalk by the ocean and one in SC on my way home. That's a lot better than I usually do when on vacation.
Some pictures from my vacation in the spoiler, if you are interested.
Tippy at the B&B.
The small green rocket in the middle is the one that we used to launch the GPS satellites.
Wednesday's launch on TV. We were able to hear it for ages after it launched, but too cloudy to see from where I was.
Friday's launch from the beach. It was cloudy so only got a small glimpse and was surprised that I didn't hear it much at all. I guess the wind was blowing in the wrong direction or something.
Me and my 3 year old great granddaughter Amira.
Me and the triplets and their two older siblings.
View of the ocean.
Storm over the ocean
It's sea turtle nesting season. Turtle tracks.
Tippy at the ocean. She never got into the waves. The first day she ran from them. The second day she howled at them...so funny. The third day she got closer, and was braver, but a no go on getting in. I really didn't expect her too, but wish she had.
This is a picture of the boardwalk at the wildlife sanctuary in SC where I ran on Sunday. It was advertised as being "well maintained." The boardwalk felt like it would break through if you put too much weight on it, so I carefully walked on that part.
This is part of an old wagon trail that I did run. It was nice that it was in the shade, but the temp was 93F, so I took plenty of walk breaks.10 -
Fab photo @quilteryoyo. Looks like a fantastic holiday.1
-
Love your photos, @quilteryoyo!1
-
@quilteryoyo Looks like you had a wonderful vacation! Glad you were able to get some running and walking done. I did get dismissed from jury duty, but the didn't seat the jury until 4:00.4
-
Looks like you had a good time @quilteryoyo. Great pictures.
6.2 miles this morning. 84°F at 4:30am. Oh yeah, just love summer running 😒
Was expecting to feel like 💩 since I ran last night, but it wasn't too bad really, except for the sauna-like conditions.
4 -
Thanks everyone. I did have a great time and it felt a bit more like a vacation staying at the B&B instead of my step daughter's house.
Great running @Scott6255 , especially after running last night. I can't imagine it being that warm at 4:30 am. At least it cools off a bit here at night. It was 66 F at 8am this morning.2 -
@quilteryoyo Sounds like your trip was fun and I guess I didn’t realize you were a GREAT grandmother!! Not many kids get to spend enough time with great grandparents to really remember them and even fewer have one that runs! I remember a couple of mine from my moms side but my kid only ever got to meet 1 of theirs and they have only a few memories. That is such a special relationship!
@scott6255 It is so hard running in the early morning after an evening run. My work schedule has me doing that sometimes and the short turnaround can be a challenge.
@kgirlhart I have only ever been called for jury duty 1 time. And I got selected for the jury for a trial that lasted 6 days. Not the best track record.
@marisap2010 I also feel so much better when I eat more “real” food and less processed stuff. But I hear you about the cheez-its. For me, it’s Dot’s pretzels. I figure a serving of pretzels is no big deal. If the Cheez-its are just a food habit you want to break, I bet sharp cheddar cheese sticks would give you the taste in a healthier format. I’m going to ask for that cookbook for my birthday this year. I love the rise and run one but would like so recipes to incorporate for other meals.

July total: 30.4/110 Miles
7/2: 10 miles
7/3: 4 miles
7/4: 5.2 miles
7/5: 5.1 miles
7/6: 6.1 miles
Another hot and humid morning. I never feel like I acclimate to the heat but my VO2 max has bumped up this week and I am noticing that my HR is staying out of zone 5 with paces staying basically the same. So, it still feels hard and sweaty but I guess my body is adjusting a little. Good news.5 -
Nice vacation pictures @quilteryoyo! I can't imagine trying to keep up with the triplets plus the "older" two!1
-
@martaindale Great running! I never feel that I acclimate either. I guess we do, but it's just hard. I am a great grandmother because my husband was 16 years older than me...marrying older men seems to be something that the women in my mom's family does (everyone but mom). Anyway, they are my step greats. He and I didn't have any kids of our own because his were already grown when we got married. I'm blessed that his kids/grandkids and I have continued to have a relationship after he passed away. I know that doesn't happen most of the time.
Thanks @Teresa502 ! I agree with you. I don't know how in the world they do it.4 -
03.06 4.01km in 7.52/km - 14 stride repeats
04.06 4.50km in 7.48/km - 5 min faster run
06.06 10.0km in 8.05/km
18.51/70km, 5.0km ahead of goal
WHOA! I finally ran 10km again. Been trying to do this for the past 2 years. Finally managed! Ok, had to walk twice after 8km as I ran out of energy, but that's fine with me. I got it! I think I'll have to take a small break now. Have minor surgery tomorrow, and I'm having a serial lactate test late next week and don't want to wreck myself before it.7
