@polskagirl01 yes... he tried to justify himself yesterday by claiming that it was only because he knew I would be tired and didn't think I should get up early after not much sleep. Because of course at the age of 44 I'm entirely unable to make decisions for myself regarding my well-being *my eyes are in danger of rolling out soon!*
I'm glad you're having a good day! Weird indeed about the invisible fire... maybe it was very minor and the bystanders dealt with it as you said, or maybe it was just a drill?
That reminds me, I don't know if I have posted that the authorities have finally said our mountain fire is out. We've been given permission to venture up into areas that weren't affected but have been asked to stay away from all the areas that burned because there's a risk of falling tree skeletons, landslides, etc. I don't want to go anyway, the photos I've seen of the devastation in some of my favourite spots were bad enough, but it does mean I can take the road that goes up to the antennas as my long runs get longer. I've reached the point where I'm having to add in loops to make up the distance and I hate loops. No idea how on earth @7lenny7 has the mental strength to do all the loops he's doing on that hill!5 -
Hello everyone
I've been on MFP for a while but just getting back into really utilizing the site\app. I didn't realize there was a message board community (maybe because I generally only use MFP on my phone to log food\exercise). I stumbled across this group today and would love to jump in!
My name is Crystal & I live in PA. I'm a 36 year old mom of 2 girls & 4 fur-babies (cats). I'm currently training for a half marathon at the beginning of October. My longest run since I began training is 6 miles. My overall goal for August is 80 miles. So far 12.41 miles completed (I've been slacking this month but I'm back on it now!)
8\2 - 4.2 miles
8\5 - 3 miles
8\7 - 5.21 miles
Have a great day everyone.7 -
This weekend I hiked 14 miles on the Appalachian Trail on Saturday, showered and went to a welcome home party for a friend’s son who has been in Japan for a couple of years. He is starting graduate school at Notre Dame in a couple of weeks but Tennessee is much closer to Notre Dame than Japan so that makes his mom very happy. Yesterday, I met a friend for a bike ride. I bought a used road bike back in the spring but had not really ridden it other than trying the clip-in shoes in my yard to make sure I could do it. Unfortunately my gears would not change properly when I unloaded my bike so I have to take it to the shop today. I still was able to ride 16 miles with her even though it was stuck in one gear. This morning I met the same friend for a 5 mile run. It was hot and sticky but it is August.
@kgirlhart – I hope your mom and sister are continuing to recovery. Sending prayers to you and your family.
Happy belated birthday @quilteryoyo – I love that you did a 6.3 mile run to celebrate even if it was hard, you did it! Glad you settled on a plan for your 10-mile race. You can do it!
Great job on your 18-miler @marisap2010
@eleanorhawkins – I’m glad you are running anyway despite the unsupportive husband. Hang in there! Also glad the mountain fire is out.
5 -
Welcome @cmcrae0217 ! Sounds like you are doing great so far.
Thanks @Teresa502 . Can't wait to see pictures from your hike.
Glad the mountain fire is out @eleanorhawkins .
Great Monday running everyone.1 -
Welcome @cmcrae0217 good luck with your training!
@Teresa502 I am very envious or your hikes :-)
My knees are telling me that I really need to respect tomorrow's scheduled rest day now!3 -
@Teresa502 16 miles stuck in one gear is pretty funny - AFTER it's over! I hope it's an easy (cheap) fix.
@eleanorhawkins good news about the fire being out. Hopefully soon signs of life will return.
Welcome @cmcrae0217 !2 -
Welcome @cmcrae0217 and @rps67! This is a crazy bunch of runners and the discussion can move really fast. Feel free to jump in and ask questions or just join in the conversation.
@kgirlhart - I am so glad your mom and sister are recovering well and that your mom is able to do her PT exercises. Hopefully soon they will be back to normal and no longer needing to quarantine and your sister and her husband can celebrate! Awesome job on your run this morning! Nice that it is getting a little cooler there! Have you seen Sunny lately?
@tarun_yadavA - your running routes sound awesome. You will have to share some pictures along your routes. Also great pace for your 'easy' 4 miles!
@marisap2010 - it is tough to get out and run and continue to run a short run when you are not feeling it. I am amazed you gutted out 18 miles! I cannot do GU's at all. They all upset my stomach. I do like the fruit (sport) gummies as they seem much lighter than others
@AlphaHowls - I think your paces, especially over the distances you run, are amazing and have gotten faster and faster!
@martaindale - I agree with others that you should be able to hook up some bluetooth headphones to your TV. Worst case you could connect your iPad to the TV and stream the video to the TV and still use your headphones connected to the iPad.
@polskagirl01 - I know you will do whatever is right for you at this point in your training with the race this weekend. Maybe the firemen were bored and decided to look busy or needed an excuse to all be out in the field at that time.
@eleanorhawkins - Glad you had a fairly nice weekend and the pictures (on Strava) were great! I am sorry your husband is being so unsupportive. I can think of lots of ways/things I would say or do. Probably not appropriate for your situation... I did ask my husband at one point (maybe rhetorically) if he really wanted to deal with me if I didn't get to run regularly.
@quilteryoyo - glad you were able to work out a plan that makes sense to you for where you are now and where you want to be for the 10 mile race.
I have been struggling with the heat but especially the humidity. We are just not used to the humidity and not having the temps drop much overnight. I have also been having IBS issues again. Not sure if the heat is a factor or if I am just in a typical flare. Last Thursday we decided to check out the beach and maybe enjoy some cooler temps. HA! It was nice on the beach but 82F and muggy. Hobbes loved it and was having a ball. Showing that he could still run like a crazy boy at 10!
I had a pretty great run on Sunday - the temps weren't any lower but the humidity was so much better. I did have some stomach issues that made me walk quite a bit but overall the outing was better than many I have recently. Today I got stuck with things at home and got out really late. I thought I could still get a short run in but it was just too hot for me. So I just did a short fast walk. We have agility class tonight - gonna be a hot one but fortunately the sun will be on its way down and that should help. For the foreseeable future we are supposed to continue to be hot - record setting hot, and humid. I've got to figure out how to manage my runs when I just don't even want to go out in it.

You are doing great to get out and do anything in those conditions @shanaber ! I hope it cools off for you soon. To give you some hope, we are supposed to have a record low temperature on Sat at 54F. It will feel really cold, I suspect.
I did a treadmill session after work. Today's plan called for a Fast Finish Run. ...5 min Zone 1/15 min Zone 2/5 min zone 3. I ran 5 min at 4.2 mph, 15 min at 4.5 mph, 5 min at 5.0 mph and then 1:34 min at 4.2 mph for a total of 2.0 miles, with no walking, for an average 13:17 min/mile pace. My HR was right in the correct zones - 5:06 min in Zone 1(less than129bpm)/16:02 min in Zone 2(less than 153pbm)/5:26 min in Zone 3(less than160bpm). I also walked a total of 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down at 3.8 mph. That bring my total for the month to 17.70/62 goal.4 -
Welcome @cmcrae0217!
@quilteryoyo I'm glad you were able to figure out a plan. Adding that build up at the start is a great idea.
@eleanorhawkins Sorry your hubby isn't being supportive. I'm glad they were able to put out all of the fires near you. I know that has been really stressful.
@shanaber Sorry you haven't been feeling well. Hobbes looks like he had a ton of fun at the beach!
My plan called for a 45 minute recovery run in Z1. My legs are still pretty tired from yesterday, but I managed 3.27 miles.
August Miles: 39.334 -
I'm back from our annual family vacation. I snuck in a guilt free 4 mile walk with a friend I used to run with before I moved but no running. So back to building a base and debating races/ training plans. Hoping to commit to one in the coming weeks. I'm too far behind on discussion posts to reply to anyone specific. Thanks to everyone for the motivation to get back into it.
August goal: 30 miles.
8/1: 3 miles
8/8: 5 miles6 -

Will try and snap a pic or two whilst running2 -
marisap2010 wrote: »I missed my run on Thursday after I found out a close friend (age 41) had a stroke and emergency heart surgery. The doctors were not expecting him to make it through the surgery, so I was waiting for news.
I did get out yesterday morning and did my interval run: 5 min Z1, 5 min Z2, 10x (1 min Z5, 2 min Z1), 5 min Z1 - for a total of 3.27 miles. I went out last night for 2.11 very slow miles to somewhat make up for missing Thursday.
This morning, I went to RIPPED at the gym and then did my 45 min Z1 recovery run on the indoor track. My friend went around with me for about 20 minutes. I ended up with 2.22 miles.
Tomorrow's long run is 18 miles. I'm going to try to get up early (like 4:30ish) so I can get most of the run finished before it is too hot.
July miles to date: 18.06
Hi! Hope you're friend is doing better0 -
Morning all. Upto 5M today.
Tried to take some pics from run - as requested Shanaber!
11 -
I appreciate the welcomes!
Yesterday I put off running til the early evening because it's just been so hot and muggy here. I'm glad that I forced myself to do it rather than putting it off to today (because then there's a chance I'd put it off til tomorrow again and you know how that goes). It really sucks trying to get back to it after (cough) a couple of years of being a complete couch potato. I know if I put in the time now, eventually I'll be back to running like I used to; it's more of a mental game to get over that hump.
I want to get back to running because I have a few pounds to lose but also for the mental health aspect. I can be overwhelmed with life at times and know I need to make this time for me. I just wish I could speed up the process so I can just go run 5 miles NOW.7 -
GOOD MORNING!!
Thanks for the welcome everyone. I'm still trying to catch up on some of the most recent conversations to get to know everyone a little.
Yesterday was supposed to be a no running day for me, but my pre-workout kicked in a little bit into my strength routine so I needed to run it off!!! I logged another 3.5 miles yesterday at the gym after my upper body strength workout. 3 miles running at exactly an 11 min\mile pace! Very proud of that, especially on the treadmill. I always struggle with my pace on them because I loathe treadmill running. It's definitely the better alternative to running in 80-90 degree weather and 100% humidity lately ... the other half mile was walking to cool down after my run.
This puts my august total at 15.91 miles .... 64.09 miles to meet my goal!6 -
Thanks @marisap2010 . You are doing great at sticking to Fitzgerald's plan. Are you liking it?
Welcome home from your vacation @Jane10s . I hope you had a great time with the family and figure out a plan to commit to soon. I have forgotten. What distance are you looking to train for?
Great running @tarun_yadavA ! Love the picture. So cool that is your view when running.
@rps67 Great job on getting out to run. Getting started is the hardest part and, you are right, tomorrow tends to never come. LOL Just take it slow and easy and you'll be surprised by how quickly you will get back to where you want to be. We all, at times, wish there was a magic running wand that would put us back to a previous level of fitness. But, alas, we have to put in the work.
Great run @cmcrae0217 ! That's a great pace, especially for just getting back into running. Of course, I'm as slow as a snail in molasses sometimes, so..... But you are doing great. I am one of the few people who don't mind the treadmill, especially when doing speed work. It's easier to keep up a certain pace when it's set and you don't have a choice.4 -
Welcome @cmcrae0217! And welcome back from vacation @Jane10s!
@eleanorhawkins Saw your pictures from the hike on strava. Looked like a really pretty place! Sounds like Mr. eleanorhawkins needs an attitude adjustment. Maybe we can ship him and my teenage kid to an island together!! Also thanks for the reminder on the SiS gels. I wanted to try those out as I somehow missed them in my big gel trial last year and they seemed like a good option for marathon training long runs.
@Scott6255 I guess I’ll see if I end up using the TV enough to bother with the headphones. Because I don’t run with them normally, I don’t really love using them. I will in a pinch but strongly prefer not to. If I end up using it regularly enough I’ll take the time to figure out how to make it work. The TV in that room is older but not too old so should be able to sort out something.

August total: 37.2/105 miles
8/1: 5.1 miles
8/3: 5 miles
8/4: 4.1 miles
8/5: 5 miles
8/6: 10 miles
8/7: 4 miles
8/9: 4 miles
Pretty uneventful morning run today. I noticed it felt slightly better outside than normal so I checked the weather when I got back. 87% humidity compared to the usually 97%. That will do it! It’s ridiculous that it’s so humid that I say things like only 87% humidity! Come on winter…4 -
Thanks @quilteryoyo ... I'm really trying to be prepared for my half marathon. I wasn't the last time I ran one. When I used to run\walk just a few miles and wasn't training for something longer, the treadmill wasn't so bad. I agree when working on pace\speed it's great! But when trying to log anything over 3-4 miles for me, I get so BORED of being in one spot. I need scenery & turns, not just a tv & staying in one spot.5

So true. I'd like to have one of those magic running wands! At least this time I know what waits for me down the road. The first time I did C25K, I had absolutely no idea.1 -

@martaindale Ha! Yeah, my 17 yo daughter can go with them lol.
I have only tried maybe 3 different brands of gel but the SiS ones work really well for me. They're not too thick and you don't need to wash the normal ones down with water, and they also do some with electrolytes in which I love for long runs at this time of year. I take a belt and water bottles on my short runs so just throw an electrolyte tab in one of my bottles, but I drink a lot so need my bladder for anything over 7 miles or so, and I don't like putting the tabs in that as it leaves me with no plain water to alternate with. So yeah, the gels with electrolytes work great. I watch out for special offers and discounts as they're a little more expensive. So much for our cheap and simple sport!3 -
That's my 1st run of the month, wasn't sure how it would go as I got Covid last week and still a bit wheasey but it went fine and my chest feels clearer for it.
09/08 2.16 miles
2.16/30 miles
@kgirlhart - I'm glad you's have got your mum home but its terrible that they caught Covid.
@polskagirl01 - sorry your suffering so much fatigue, you didn't let it spoil your holiday or race so Go You!5 -
No run for me today as we had agility last night and that is always exhausting for both Hobbes and me. Last night was especially bad as it was so hot and muggy. Everyone (people and pups) were struggling on our last few runs. I did get in my strength workout focusing on upper body and core but as always end up with some hip/glute work too.
I posted this to the group on FB but since not everyone is there I thought I would share it here too.
Below is a post from my friend and Ultra runner, Rachel Bell Kelly, along with the link to her backstory on the High Lonesome 100. I think what she says below captures so well the feelings we all have at some point in our running life of not feeling adequate or motivated. She also has the race recap posted now on wordpress as well as one on how to recover.
https://thwisp.wordpress.com/.../high-lonesome-100.../
"As I started reflecting on my @highlonesome100 race I realized there was a lot more that went into this than just the race. I had not participated in a 100 miler since 2019, nothing in my training/racing life seemed to be easy since then, hip arthritis, ankle impingements, getting “old.”
I actually think the journey I was on the past three years was harder than the actual race..which really did feel like a celebration of getting through pain and loss and injury and the seemingly never ending stress of trying to train through a pandemic.
I’m sharing this for several reasons. First, because I think we are all having less than perfect training with how covid has changed the landscape of our lives, and second because I want to encourage people to keep showing up to the things they love, even when their situations are less than ideal for what they invision are successful results. Finally we are not the outcomes of our efforts we are the journey; something more than than just one moment in time. I thought that showing up to a race that I was not adequately prepared for and finishing nearly DFL would be devastating (especially to my competitive ego) when in fact it taught me so much more and this race made more of an impression on me than than a fast 16th place at WSER several years ago.
The actual race report will come later.
As always thanks to my biggest supporters dkelley41 balancedmovementstudio etowe66 bbeattypt runningmegleg runinrabbit
And all my friends and two sisters who helped me navigate the past 3 years."8 -
Nice running @martaindale ! Glad it was "less" humid today.
@Mari33a I'm glad you are feeling better after a bout with CoVID and your first run went well.
@shanaber Last night's agility sounds brutal. Love Rachel's thoughts that you posted. Sometimes we do forget that the journey is more important, often, than the destination.4 -
I didn't have to work today, so had intended to mow my lawn. It was hot and humid by the time it dried enough to mow. Then, my mower wouldn't start! I'm going to say that was a good thing because I probably shouldn't have been out in those conditions mowing. I was sweating just riding my Gator (utility vehicle) to the gate to get the mail.
I did do my planned Foundation Run on the treadmill this afternoon. Plan called for 5 min Zone 1, 15 min Zone 2, 5 min Zone 1. My actual session was 5 min at 4.2 mph, 15 min at 4.5 mph, 1 min walk at 3.8 mph, 6:37 min at 4.2 mph. Result was 2.0 miles with an average pace of 13:49 min/mile and my HR were pretty much right on track. I also walked a total of 0.70 miles at 3.8 mph for warm up and cool down. That's 20.4 miles/62 mile goal.6 -
@shanaber thanks for sharing Rachel's post. She made some very good points.
Nice work @quilteryoyo
I did a little speed work on the treadmill this evening, totaled 5 miles after WU/CD.

@tarun_yadavA Nice view! Thanks about my friend - he is doing a little better. Still in ICU, but off the ventilator.
@shanaber I really like your friend's post.
@Mari33a Glad you are feeling a little better after the Covid.
Good job on your run, @quilteryoyo! I am liking Fitzgerald's plan so far. I hope that I'll see some improvement at Wineglass.
My plan called for a tempo run today: 5 min Z1, 5 min Z2, 24 min Z3, 5 min Z2, 5 min Z1. I waited until after work to run, so it was about 90 degrees but not awful. I ended up with 3.65 miles.
August miles: 42.97

Good morning all 😊
Ran 5 !

Thanks @Scott6255 and @marisap2010 . You both are doing great with your running. @marisap2010 I'm glad you like Fitzgerald's plan and hope you see the results you are hoping for in October.
Great running @kgirlhart and @tarun_yadavA !
