Lanette, I decided to put my answer to your question about dr's in a spoiler as it seems to have turned into a bit of a rant! The doctor shortage is not the only problem, there is a shortage of all medical personnel. The GP's aren't paid well at all and dr's who have just graduated have huge debt, so setting up their own practice (and paying staff, rent etc) is often not worth it for them when they can get into a hospital (called a hospitalist) and get paid a salary. A gp in practice for him/herself gets paid per patient (and a pittance in my opinion!) and as I said before, with the overhead it's just too much. Our gp was telling hubby that he has had several residents train with him (his is a teaching practice) and only two of them have gone on to become gp's. I have heard of several doctors trying to sell their practice and have no one interested in buying. It doesn't help that we live in one of the most expensive cities in Canada. Housing is especially atrocious. There also seems to be a lack of spaces in various medical training facilities so there aren't as many people graduating from their schools as their should be. This has been on ongoing issue, I remember hearing talk of this several years ago, the gov't was warned, but apparently didn't listen....Ginny, that dr was a jerk! I hope it's just a bruise too and that you feel better soon!
Allie, I do hope you were able to get some rest! The cuckoo clocks would put me over the edge...
Rebecca, thanks for the photos of Athena, she does brighten the day! "Pee on a jelly stain" roflmao!! Thanks also for the pics of Tucker, that puppy pic! Oh my!
Annie, I'm glad you enjoyed the show and that your mom was able to be left on her own for awhile. Would you have to drink the entire glass of wine with the food pairings? Perhaps just a sip or two for the experience and let your friend have the rest?
Katla, I am very happy to see that you and hubby are together, I'm sure that your mind is so much more at ease when you can see and interact with him every day. It must be nice to be closer to the grandkids too!
KJ, always nice to hear from you, although I am quite exhausted just reading about all that you do for and with the kids!
Lisa, glad that you enjoyed the visit with the family, yes, sometimes it is lovely to be waving goodbye to them!
Heather in VA, welcome! come back soon! This is a very fast moving group and we are a chatty bunch. Don't feel that you have to respond to everyone, you would never get off the site! lol Moving is the key and my biggest problem too, it's annoying to know exactly what you have to do but also being "not in the mood!" I do find that once I get to the gym, I'm okay and I enjoy the workout, but I really have to stop making excuses and start going regularly.
The bbq last night for my retirement was lovely, good food, good company and we hardly talked about work at all! I have found that's what happens a lot on a work function, we just end up talking about various things that have happened, need to happen etc, but there were enough "outsiders" (partners, other family members) that the conversations went in other directions. I was given a lovely bouquet of flowers that I will try to post a pic of and a costco gift card for a substantial amount. Looking forward to spending that!
My apologies for having rambled on for so long, this is what happens when I don't comment for awhile, don't read for awhile and then open two windows with MFP on my desktop. I can comment in one window and read in the other, it works great, but this is the ever so long result!
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

EVIE ~ Enjoy your retirement! Cute Grandkids!
REBECCA ~ I think Ginny's advice about actually weighing/logging your food is good. That's the only way I can keep my weight from getting any higher than it already is! There are so many foods that can add a lot of calories even if they seem to be in small amounts. At my old age and arthritis, it is almost impossible for me to get the amount of exercise that would do a lot of good.
DREAMS ~ I have the strangest dreams around. Last night I dreamed I decided I needed to get a job to keep me off the computer/tv addiction. I applied at a place and was given the job to help sort/wrap bundles of fat. The two women over me were very fat and the room I would work in was dirty and dusty. I decided that wasn't for me. I am sure that must have had some psychological meaning. If anyone wants to chime in to what led to this, please feel free to do so.
BINGING ~ I had a binge the other night for no apparent reason...crackers, cashews, and cookies. This happens to me about every 4 or 5 weeks.

I had a lovely L O N G chat with my friend L this afternoon. Well over an hour and a half!
Touched on lots of deep and difficult subjects, but with humour.
DH came home from cricket and we discussed a few of those subjects. I feel that was good work.
Today I gave myself a pedicure, did my roots, and washed some sofa cushions. Otherwise watched and listened to inspiring online stuff. I was able to recommend my friend L my favourite book on boundaries. I believe most of our problems are down to our inability to draw boundaries.
I had a veggie jar of Thai lentils for lunch with cauliflower rice. Cucumber, lettuce and scallions. Yum. They are obviously trying glass jars to avoid the plastic packs. I bought a sample set of four different ones. Not bad.
I think I have got myself, after a lot of work on myself, into a position where I am ready to try pushing the button for publication of my book, WHERE AM I? Yes!
There is so much helpful stuff out there. Every time I have a problem, I find something that is speaking exactly to the question I am asking. Very woo-woo!
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxxx, where the heatwave is breaking at last.7 -
Rebecca I am right there with you! Too many extra calories this past month. It's gotta stop. So the first step is to measure and log everything, so I'm coming from a rational viewpoint of knowledge and not just emotion. Because my emotions slide from disgust to overachieving and my diet needs to be consistently under calories for the day. Plus I tend to forget the last treat I had.
I admire your ability to fast. I don't think I could do that.
Now that I've had my outing, I'm back to my routine. I know it works when I stay away from the cookies and candy. I'm going to do that, and drop this belly fat. No excuses.
I'm also going to start writing more often. Again, no excuses. I ordered a book on a do-it-yourself Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. It's based on the idea that you can do the reading and writing yourself, so if you can grow the community too you can have all the elements of the academic experience without the cost. We shall see. It's a start.
Remember Bruce Springsteen said "I'm just tired and bored with myself." There's a fix. Just going to the theater helped me remember the person I want to be. So it's time to make some progress on that.
I just wrote another long long post. You all are such a great audience! Time to switch to creative writing prompts.

Carol - Same here in the binge department. Not sure what triggered your dreams or what the significance is. I know I dream a lot but can't remember them - I don't think they are unpleasant.
Evey - thank you for the insight on the medical shortages in BC. Many GP's in our area have gone to the big city where I guess they make a lot more money. The shortages have been filled by Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants in many clinics, who all seem to do a good job from what I understand and are quick to refer patients to specialists who are sometimes booked out for months. When I had my last surgery, I had a Nurse Anesthesiologist, and when DH was in the hospital, the Hospitalist was a Nurse Practitioner as well.
Your granddaughter a pole dancer, lol. Cute!
Lisa - glad the missing wallet was found and glad DD's new squeeze is caring and mature. Now back to normal for you, Corey and Egg
The house is fragrant with steamed broccoli and salmon patties.
It has warmed up again. I tackled another box of old stuff - things my sis boxed up after my mom died. Most of it will go to the thrift store. Have another one to go through tomorrow, plan to drop off on Tuesday when I'm in town.
Have a good evening!

Reading-I have always been a reader. Got away from it a bit the last couple of years. Bought a kindle and rather like that. Am slowly making my way thought hard copy of Game of Thrones series. Reading The Diet Myth on Kindle-interesting contrast of materials!
Allie-you really go above and beyond for others. Don't think I would stay and an ex's house. My grandmother would say you will have a throne in heaven!
Machka-really like the 50 ways to take a break. Some of you find the coolest things to share-guess I don't hang out on those websites!
Katla-glad things are steadily improving.
Heather in Va-I don't think any of us are really doomed to anything. I may never reach my college weight (I was very lean but thought I was fat!), but I can be thinner than I was at my heaviest as an adult. I agree with you-movement is critical. It helps me with my weight and my attitude.
Carol in Ga--I'm far from a psychologist but-you wanted to overcome a computer/tv addiction and you are active on a fitness site. Two ladies are heavy and things are dusty and dirty and you decide it isn't for you. So maybe you think finding ways to deal with weight and cleaning more can help you with the computer and tv addiction?
Heather-good of you to check in with L as you do. Congrats on book being ready.
Did some more stuff around the house. Did some more computer research on stuff I want to set up. Had lovely walk this am. I swear our skies are starting to get a fall look about them.
Off to check coupe of other things. Oh-and arm is just a bruise. Used arnica on it and the bruising not as bad as it was looking (I have very fair skin and bruise very easily anymore).
Take care all,

DH & I are currently living in an apartment in an assisted living place in Illinois. It is a very good situation for the two of us. DH is recovering from a serious heart attack, and we are grateful that he is doing okay. 🙏🏻 ❤️
Are you doing any knitting. Knitting would be a perfect thing to do while your husband recovers3 -
Rebecca, I was 62 years old when I found MFP. I had tried and failed at so many weight loss plans and wondered if I would ever succeed. What helped me was to do a very serious personal inventory of my relationship with food and exercise to help me make life changes that help me be lighter, healthier, and fitter and contribute to longevity. Among my first decisions was to stop using food as a source of entertainment and recreation. That meant that I wasn't going to spend a lot of time thinking and planning about what fun things to eat. For both health and frugality, I cut back on restaurant eating. I began meeting my friends for a walk rather than lunch or a beverage. I decided to resign my position as excellent chocolate chip cookie baker and find other ways to excel in life. I got a pedometer and used that as encouragement to be more active. I read books about healthy eating and exercise and habit formation. I listened to podcasts about health. I made my health more important than anything else in my life. Now I am 76 years old and have lost 50 pounds and kept the weight off for years. I check in to MFP and this thread every morning without fail to log food and exercise and stay connected to others who have the same goals of weight loss, health, fitness, and longevity. I have learned so much from others. I wish you the best on your new resolve.

and, we have a new addition.
This tiny little kitten has been alone, hanging out in the yard for the past few weeks. I set the trap and in less than half an hour, it was inside the house, in the pen, and getting comfy.
Cats all seem to find us- this is how we have gotten all of our cats. Not sure if we will keep it or find a home. I am guessing, keep it. Husband will want to keep it. It looks so much like his favorite that passed away a year and a half ago. It is already doing something the other did that none of the other cats do, which is watch tv. I have NGTV on- Wicked Tuna and it is watching
Right after I brought it in, I found huge coon paw prints on the back deck- glad the little one is in and safe from the critters.

Allie - I don’t know how you manage to go stay in that house.
Heather - your family is beautiful.
Rebecca - I know how you are feeling. I am struggling to stay in control of myself too. I really need to log and quit munching all evening.
Evelyn - Happy retirement! There is a doctor shortage across Canada right now. In the last month 2 people have died in emergency rooms in NB.
I know there was more, I’ve been reading along but not taking the time to post.
The weekend went so fast. Our eldest the Grands and I went to yard sales yesterday. I gave each Grand $20. I love watching what they buy and seeing people give them deals.
Michaela got a rug, curtains, and Disney Princess decals for her room for $10. At another house she picked up some jewelry and nail polish, she also bought a chess set so Daddy will teach her, and a scooter so they don’t fight over the one at their house currently.
Jonah bought a pull-up bar, a couple of Nerf guns, a pogo stick, which his mother injured herself on when showing them how it was done, and was given a nice leather briefcase. I swear that boy was born in the wrong century. He also wears bow ties and loves dress shoes.
I bought more pieces for my Christmas village and a snowman cookie jar for 3.00, a couple of albums and an Avon perfume bottle I had a young girl. I think I spent a total of $10 on myself.

I stayed at the house because of Homer our dog ,he is 16 1/2 and blind and on meds and knows that house and is more comfortable there.. ive had him here ..but he goes to the door and scratches to go home..
Even still he would go to the family room and look towards the door waiting for Tom to come home..those 2 have a tight tight bond.
I got the correct meds in at the correct times.one has to be with food.. he has a meal at midnight but had it at 11.luckily i had made it ahead of time.. and Alfie and he were in and outside I dont know how many times..don't think they settled down until after 1 am.. and I was awake at 5:30..
Tom and Elena had a lovely time... went on a luncheon cruise and had a nice dinner out.. relaxed and had a few cocktails and walked Canada st where all the shops are.
They were home by 1:30 on Sunday.. Homer barking away..they bought me a nice dream catcher.. Alfie and I got Tom a card and a gift certificate to a local restaurant. The card was hysterical had a dog on the front and it said inside

I'm attempting to upload my book. Got the cover done, but I'm having all the trouble I anticipated uploading the text. It's the front few pages that get me every time. Nearly drove myself crazy before lunch, but I will have another go this afternoon, now I have stopped panicking.
It will happen eventually, if I don't go crazy first.
Not cut out for this.
Heat is less intense. Cloudy and a bit muggy.
My friend G is in Paris, seeing her granddaughter. I like getting messages and photos from her. I have visited Paris around 17 times.

Wow - this post has so many replies! I am just entering the fray as they say! I've let work invade my personal time way to much this past two months and gained 3 lbs instead of losing them as a result. It's time to take back some of my day for me.
My name is Anne and I live in Fenwick Island, DE about 3 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. We moved here full-time about a year ago and it is our happy place.
A little about myself: I'm 56 years old and have been dieting since I was 12. I am an identical twin and we have both struggled with our weight for all these years. It takes up so much energy to be on this roller coaster but I think over the past year, I have finally found the secret to getting off the roller coaster and living my true life. MFP is a bit part of that. I weighed in at 180 lbs on July 1, 2021. I am only 5 2 1/2 and for me that is a lot of weight. I was not happy with my weight but I was working out regularly, ate healthy foods, blah, blah blah but I wasn't really counting and watching how much I was eating and if I was really eating that healthy why wasn't the weight coming off. I blamed it on menopause and stress. Yes, those were definitely real contributors to the weight gain, they really weren't to blame. I decided to be honest with myself and really track everything I put in my mouth, weigh myself every day for a awhile and used MFP to track progress (good and bad) and learned from what the scale was telling me! I know some will say "throw the scale out" but my advice is to use it to your advantage, don't look at as evil, use it just like you use the kitchen scale (yes you must use a kitchen scale!). It is just information, use it to understand what works in your meal plan. If one day it jumps up a lb or two or three, look back on the previous day and find out what caused it. Dinner out, an extra drink or two, maybe you didn't have time drink enough water, etc.. By becoming friendly with the scale and using it for information not a barometer of who I am, I started to lose weight. Slow and steady wins the race.
In April 2022, I was done 30 lbs and extremely happy with my weight loss, its been a project a kin to what I think chiseling marble would be like. A little here a little there, hit a few plateaus... we traveled a lot from early May to mid June and as a result I jumped up about 5 lbs, I've lost and regained about 3 of those lbs over the past two months but I ate healthy and moderately while on vacation (Vegas and Italy in those 6 weeks) and I was glad I hadn't gained 10 lbs!
I want to lose another 20 lbs but I'm not putting a day on it because that creates more anxiety I just don't need in my life! The biggest factor that has caused the weight gain (though I know it is only a little bit) is I haven't been posting or weighing myself like I was. I want to get back on track before that 5 becomes 10 and so on.
So this is me putting it in writing, I'm back to full time posting on MFP and going back to what I know will work! Good luck to all those on a similar journey and remember you've got this!10 -

Hi y’all. YAY! The heat is finally gone. It was morning when I started this post. Now it’s after lunch. Luckily I had hit the save draft button.
Evelyn: Enjoy your retirement. Ease into it gently.
Heather: Hit the button! You know you want to. 😂 Ah! I see you did.
Rebecca: What Barbie said except I was 67 when I started adulting 😝
Tracking food was an eye opener. It showed me that my portion control was wayyyyy off the mark. I weigh, measure, and track my food every day. Eyeballing portions is a definite NO! NO!
I took me over 7 years to change my habits, one by one. I still enjoy my food, I just eat it in more moderate amounts than I did before.
It’s been raining off and on since breakfast. Probably won’t stop for a while. Thunderstorms passed us by.
Psyching myself up to go and declutter something.
🥳🎉 Cheers to all those celebrating. May you have all you wish for.
Virtual (((hugs))) and 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for those who need them. This too shall pass.

It's DONE!
I finally did what I should have done all along. I copied and pasted it into their 5x8 Fixit, that I had on file from ME I AM. Easy then. Yes, I know, Lisa.
The Kindle version went smoothly.
So I am just waiting for it to go live on Amazon. WHERE AM I? by Heather Eyles. They have to check it's in decent order before it's live and it takes a few days for them to get the Author Page etc updated and to link the paperback and Kindle versions.. I'm soooo impatient!
Anyways, I'm knackered as Heather says, (oh, I'm Heather! ) and I'm glad my heart has stopped pounding!
Love to all.

Yay Heather! What an achievement!
Welcome to Anne in Fenwick Island. I'm way up north of you. Yes measuring and logging and weighing make knowledge which helps set appropriate limits. You can do this!

Hi Barbiecat and others, I'm StefieS from Wash DC and I am logging in to MFP for the first time today after a 5 year plus hiatus. Wowza. My ticker showed me that I had met my goal back then...but, when I hit 50, arthritis in my hip limited me exercise and my eating habits also gradually declined.
Now I am back up and need/want to lose 30 pounds! So, I know I'm joining in mid-month here, but like I said, just started back today. One bad habit I've developed is late-night eating when I am stressed and/or can't sleep. Anyone else struggle with this?8 -
Hi Heather DE! Welcome. We posted at almost the same time so I missed you yesterday. So sorry about your mom. Wish you the best in your journey.
Evey, just love your pole dancer!
Hi Anne! (love that name... that's our youngest DD's name) Welcome. You do live in a beautiful part of our country. Have to say that.
WOOHOO! Heather UK! I'm so excited. That's amazing. So you'll let us know when it's live right? And give us all the link so we can go grab it??? I've actually had this on my calendar notifications to ask you about this entire month!!!
