The spoiler is full of a first world whine….I do love traditions and sometimes they stop being fun, or enjoyable and become something that is an obligation. My mom has traditions that are fully obligations, and she is unwilling or unable (at 93) to accept that these traditions can be altered or changed in any way. The winter holidays are full of these from Halloween to New Years it is minefield of stuff that was fun and grew and grew into a nightmare.
One of those is cookie making. Last year we made 8 types of cookies, 2 types of candy a total of 150-160 dozen pieces and they were divided up and given out to friends, neighbors, and service providers (aka the pool guy, hairdresser…) they are put on paper plates and delivered in the week or so before Christmas. When I was a kid we did a few kinds and they were given to a few people, and they were always on a beautiful 3 tier cookie tray when my folks entertained over the holidays. I am not sure when this got so out of control. When I moved out on my own, I did start cooking my own cookies – maybe 4 kinds and giving them out to friends, and having them as the desert for my entertaining. I do have to say that my family likes to entertain. I do not remember any time when there was not at least one “fancy” dinner party per month in my home, and many other times when there was an extra person or two for dinner.
Making my own cookies and handing out a few trays to folks was a nice way to acknowledge neighbors and friends without spending a ton of money. For the last 10-15 years Mom and I have done it together and it was fun. But for the last 5-7 years mom can not do it alone, and the list has grown, as she has encouraged my brother to put his friends on the list and her grandson (who she raised) to do the same. 2 years ago, I broke my budget and was exhausted after 4 days of cooking cookies at my house for 12 hours a day. Also, I provided 3 homecooked meals a day. Mom helps with the finances but not enough. Last year I recruited help – her grandson and his girlfriend came and helped – it was better but not enough and this last year my mom has slowed down and is less able to process multiple things. So with encouragement from my counselor, I started to really get some control over this event. It turns out that my brother gives 5 trays, my nephew (mom’s grandson) 11 trays, my mom 6 trays and I do 15 trays. 36 total trays. My mom puts together all of the trays but mine, and averages 3 dozen cookies per tray. That’s 108 dozen and none left for entertaining. This needed to be brought under control!!!!
Of all the cookies we do only one is really a family tradition cookie it is a deep fried cookie we call it a rosette, almost a sweet crepe batter, a shaped mold is heated dipped into the batter and then deep fried. Top with powdered sugar and they are yummy.
Discussion time with mom was painful. She felt I didn’t love her, I wanted to ruin one of her last Christmas’; make her friends forget her before she was even dead…. And believe it or not she is an inflation denier. She was adamant that food prices have not gone up since last year. Well after a couple of hours, we only took 3 trays off the list, BUT we dropped the candy, dropped one of the cookies, and swapped out a very time consuming cookie for a bar cookie. And decided that there were 11 trays that could be all rosettes and no other cookies. The other thing I have done is bought the trays – and they are smaller (not a lot- as that would cause it own set of problems) but a bit smaller so it will only be 2-2.5 dozen per tray. Just that lowers the number of cookies by 18 dozen. I will still be exhausted but I will be able to keep this at 4 days of cooking and control the budget a bit. I do feel like this is a win!
Kim- I totally understand!!
I will be going up to mom's in a few weeks(first weekend of Dec) to make candy(fudge/caramel corn/toffee bars/etc.
We do this each year, and like you each year, mom is not up to helping as much as she has been.
I give some out but she gives out more and to people that she only sees a few times a year or people who work at a restaurant she used to sell veggies too quite a few years ago( at least 3 yrs ago or more.
I buy a lot of the supplies, she does buy some. I will go up Friday morning(or maybe even Thursday night so I have more time) and won't come home until Monday at noon, in time to get Ezie from school.
She is tired, especially on Saturday afternoon because we get up at 4AM to help at the food program. I know I only have a few days so I push through and get it done. 8 batches of caramel corn, 8 batches of cracker toffee and at least 16 batches of fudge- that is minimum. Thankfully, the recipes I have for these are quick/simple. I am exhausted by the time I come home
There will be other things she wants to make- like divinity and penachue (sp?). She gets side tracked so easily. I try not to push too much to get her back on track or she gets irritated. Doesn't say anything when I am there but I hear it from my sister.

Heather - I keep thinking I would like to take a cruise. I’m not so sure I could handle the swells though.
Lanette - that “Kill a Watt” sounds like a good investment.
Kelly - my daughter, Kaitlyn decorates with Santa in mind. As a matter of fact I went shopping with her today and she found a 4ft Santa. Her MIL had just asked her for a Christmas wish list so she sent a picture to her. Kaitlyn just sent me a screenshot of the conversation with her MIL. Her MIL said it will be included as a gift but sent her the money to go buy it now. 😂
Betsy - it sounds like you and Ella have a wonderful start to your day.
Annie - sorry your plans didn’t work out. It’s ok to feel disappointed though.
Lisa - I don’t think I would be a good carer either. However, I’m sure if there was no alternative I would do the absolute best I could.
Allie - I think you should be able to go when you want to. Tracy and Kyle really do need a back up plan.
What will they do when you have your surgery?
Had a great day and late night decorating with my daughter yesterday. This morning we went shopping for a few more items we “needed”. I came home after dropping her off and decorated my outside. I still need to do the deck and make more balls for the tree but so far I’m liking it.

Tracey- that looks so pretty (and really cold!!)

Awake early again! Wish I could sleep on a bit.
Bit choppy out there, wind whistling, but I think I've got my sea legs. Even DH doesn't seem too bothered. We'll be off to the gym in a bit. When it's rough we do the sitting down machines!
Last night was the crew show, put on by all the engineers, bar staff, housekeepers, etc. Fabulous! One guy had one of the best voices I've EVER heard and sang in two registers. He is a chef.
Afterwards we all piled into the Britannia lounge for a last show by the cast. It was ABBA. I got a hug from the dance director and he was soaking wet!!!
So a great send off for our last formal. Tonight is our very last. We have to pack this evening and we are scheduled for the first pick up if docking goes OK.
I do have a ballroom lesson, cha cha cha, this morning, plus watercolour and a watercolour exhibition of our paintings at 2 pm. Then feedback forms. Ugh.
Tonight it's a great performance by a pianist/musical director. Amazing range. Mostly musicals.
Now, a cup of tea and off to the gym.
Love Heather, in the Bay of Biscay, riding the waves! Xxxxxxxx4 -

Heather -- well done!
Cookies -- not a big Christmas tradition in Canada or Australia. If I have time and energy, I might make some of my grandmother's shortbread and I imagine I'll make fudge each year but I've yet to do it.
Traditions -- when my ex-husband and I separated many, many years ago, I also let go of a whole lot of Christmas traditions. It was so freeing!! His family was big into giving gifts to everyone, and cooking, and baking, and big family gatherings, and eating ourselves into oblivion. I found it so stressful.

I had mine hosted on GoDaddy but found I couldn’t justify the cost. Where do you all host your sites?
Grateful: ability. I am thankful that I can see more than one side to problems.

Website -- I use VentraIP and I think it's about $120/year. I also pay for my domain name.
I've had my site for about 20 years using a couple different hosts, and it's gone through a few iterations in that time.
In the past, I coded my whole site myself in HTML, but a few years ago, I decided to go with Wordpress. I still code some parts myself when I get frustrated with something in Wordpress, but I like many of the features.
It's here (in the spoiler) and is not well developed at this point. Like Lisa, all the writing isn't lost, it's just waiting for me to have a moment to do something with it.

Machka - I love hearing about your bees. What do they feed on in your area? Around here, invasive blackberries have taken over. But, the bees love the flowers and "Blackberry Honey" is delicious. Does anyone remember that gal from New Zealand who was on here for a while who had hives placed among Manuka bushes and had a thriving market for the honey-shipped a lot to China? Have any of you ever tried Manuka honey? I guess it has a lot of healthful properties.
Lanette
SW WA State@SophieRosieMom ...
We have fresh fruit and vegetables markets here too. Markets as in shops and markets as in Farmers Markets.
Salamanca Fresh is the main one we go to.
https://www.salamancafresh.com.au/
I have used Manuka honey. It is produced here as well. That link above may show that Salamanca Fresh sells some.
Bees like most flowers and apparently especially purple or blue flowers. We're in an area where a lot of people have gardens full of flowers so the bees are quite happy. They will fly in a 2km radius from a hive and some have been tracked further so ours will also get gum trees when they flower.

Manuka honey comes from a flowering plant that is in the tea tree and myrtle families, so it's flavour is a bit different from other honeys I've tried. If you're familiar with what tea tree lotions smell like, the flavour is like that but with some sweetness to it. It's a bit medicine-y. I like it, but I prefer a teaspoon of it on its own, rather than on toast.
This is one of the places we get our honey: https://heritagehoney.com.au/product-category/honey-i1/

Very glad I found this group! I’m 56, a chronic pain patient, and love the conversations I’ve been seeing in here. Since I’m a CPP I’m very limited in my mobility which makes my weight loss a little more challenging. I started with this APP on September 22( coincidentally my birthday) I have lost 24 pounds so far! I finally (with the help of my husband) took apart the spare bedroom and donated the queen sleigh bed to charity. Then I moved my craft table from the garage into the house. I now finally have a. craft room! I haven’t been able to work on anything because it took me one day to move everything into the house then another day just to set up my workspace. With any hope, I’ll !be able to do something tomorrow! Right now my favorite craft to do is work with resin! Messy but lots of fun! I’ll post pictures of some work once I have something worthy. I truly hope I can build some friendships in this room. I look forward to talking with you all!!

30 Days of Gratitude
1. Smell - freshly cut grass on our lawn.
2. Technology - the amazing advancements in medical technology.
3. Colour - blue. Beautiful blue sky peaking through the clouds.
4. Food - soup. That's what I've been eating just recently because there's less chewing. We always keep a few cans of soup on hand for situations like these.
5. Sound - my music. I've recently acquired a number of nature sounds CDs with music playing along with sounds of ocean waves, birds, and so on. Lovely.
6. Nature - I love nature. It would be incredibly difficult for me to pick just one thing. I am so grateful that there is nature and that I can enjoy it.
7. Memory - Winter 2017. The last time I visited my parents and a wonderful 1-month holiday to Canada that June/July. My husband and I did two cycling events and a lot of other cycling. We climbed mountains and explored a glacier. We visited friends and family.
Memories:

8. Book - Norman Doidge's The Brain's Way of Healing. I found it inspirational!
https://www.normandoidge.com/?page_id=1042
9. Place - home. I've moved and travelled a lot and home is wherever I happen to feel really comfortable. Right now, home is a certain house here in Tasmania where I can go and just be myself (mostly, for even a little while). Home is where I can lie down on the sofa and doze off when I've had a rough day, like I did yesterday.
10. Taste - salt. My favourite taste. On the one hand I need salt because of my exercise and medications, on the other hand I need to reduce my salt because of my kidneys. But given the choice, I'll usually go salty over sweet ... or maybe salty and sweet!
11. Holiday - Christmas!!!!
12. Texture - smoothness. I like smooth clothes, smooth sheets, Rhody's smooth fur ...
13. Abilities - I don't really think of myself in terms of having abilities. I've sort of thought of myself as "the jack of all trades, master of none". However, organisation is one that I've been thankful for throughout my life.
14. Sight - the beauty all around. In our yard, where we go cycling, where I work, and travelling around this island.

Kim-I find myself stunned about the cookies. I have never been much of a baker. My mother, after she retired took up making cookies and desserts. She also did large amounts, She used them for gifts for people. I occasionally make one of her recipes but since I don't eat many it is easier to stay away. Glad you found a compromise.
Tracey-decorations are very pretty. I also agree it looks cold! Of course, it is 27 here with a projected high of 39.
Rosemarie-I find I do much better when I limit carbs. I am cutting back on them-I have picked up too much on them in the 1 1/2 since I quit smoking. While I am still at a healthy weight I like the feel of my clothes better a bit lower.
Annie-weight loss and maintenance is indeed a journey. If it was quick and easy-we wouldn't be on a site like this for support! Just chip away a bit at a time-small changes can add up.
Terri-I don't have a birth defect but I have had poor eyesight since I was a child. I cherish being able to see. Loosing sight is one of my fears/concerns.
Debbie-sometimes our bodies get stuck at a weight for a while. Maybe your calories are a bit too low? A variation one way or the other can seem to jumpstart sometimes.
Rebecca-I always visualize what a weight loss looks like. I will picture whatever it is on my body and it helps me see what it means. Since it is November, it struck me that you have lost a decent turkey since August-that is alot! Good job! There should be some positive coming from your health woes and what you went through to get answers!
Gotta go hit the shower and get ready for the week. Will be busy with budget time. Did not get as much done at home on it as I planned, but I feel rested from my weekend so that will definitely help with my productivity this week!
Take care all,

Tracey - those Christmas decorations are beautiful. I'm inspired to actually do some decorating this year. Generally I at least get a wreath on the door, maybe it's time to up it.
Kim - or should I call you Cookie? Every year a sweet gal on the block brings a BIG tray of cookies & homemade candies in decorated paper cups to all 6 houses on our lane alone. She's been doing it for years. One year I caught her early after I retired and begged her to skip us, DH didn't eat many sweets so I ended up eating nearly all of them. Yes I put a lot of them in the freezer and I discovered I love frozen cookies.
She did skip us that year but has been back at it again ever since. Now I see all of work and expense it is - I think she gets together with some of her church friends to do all of this.
With all of the folks going no sugar and low carb, I don't think any of the recipients would mind getting smaller plates of cookies. Your mom might go for that?
Rosemarie - Amazon Prime Rewards. I have an Amazon Visa thru Chase Bank, and I get a certain amount of points for purchases. Sometimes if I don't use it much, and it's just a few dollars. But last month I bought tires for the car and a few other things so it added up. I think a person also has to be enrolled in Amazon Prime - which is $150 per year or around $12.50/month, and for that I get free shipping on most items plus access to a lot of series and movies and videos. I figure for as much as I use it, it's a good deal for me.
Regarding your bedroom light, what's the wattage printed on the bulb? 40 or 60? I'll plug in the Kill A Watt into one of my lamps and see how much electricity it's using and give you an estimate. Our electric rate here is $.97 per day plus usage which is billed at 0.6819 per KWH. From what I'm seeing so far, I doubt that bedroom light - if it's incandescent - costs even a dollar per month. And if it's one of the new energy saving lights, it's probably pennies. Will be happy to check it out.
I'm heading in early for my regular eye exam and then grabbing some groceries. The frames on my favorite regular glasses are nearly worn out. They are at least 20 years old so I guess I got my money's worth. I see metal frames are "in" again so maybe it's time for a new pair. I kept wearing the old ones because I discovered I'm allergic to the plastic in the ear pieces on many brands. - my temples would itch and break out. So I have several pairs of newer ones in the drawer. They'd be good to wear in an emergency but not for long periods of time. Wish me luck!
I was going to complain about the temperature being 31f but realize many of you are now dealing with night time temps in the teens and 20's and snow to boot. So I'll count my blessings instead.
Make it a fabulous day!
Lanette

Kim- Holy crap, that is a LOT of baking! My mom baked like that for the holidays; BUT we were a family of eight and all holidays for both my mom's and my dad's side were at our home. My mom comes from a family of 11 kids and my dad from a family of 7 kids. We would meld the two families together for holidays. There were cousins in every nook and cranny! lol Good times! I remember quite a few "adventures/mishaps" on those events.3

Kim and Debbie both, I am sure your recipients are very happy, and I have zero envy for the doing of it all. I will occasionally get in the mood to bake something, but the thought of doing it all day long for even ONE day sounds exhausting. I bow to your strength and abilities--you are good daughters and strong people.
Tracey - I keep forgetting to say how much I loved those Christmas figures... Love them backing up to the warmth!
Machka - Love seeing those photos...
Which reminds me of my next gratitude,
14. Sight: I am so grateful for the gift of sight, especially now that I'm wearing glasses all the time. I didn't know how fuzzy my world had gotten until it came into focus!
Because of the talk on here about Christmas and Thanksgiving, I checked in with Corey on whether he wanted or needed a celebration of either, and we reaffirmed our usual, which is a lack of any desire to make a special meal or buy gifts, etc. If we really want something, we buy it. Luckily, we're both also reasonably frugal and don't want much.
My daughter is MUCH more invested in holidays than we are, but she has young children, and I'm glad she enjoys doing those things. Due to their hectic schedule, I don't think we'll see the grands this year, but that's OK too. I like having them here when we can just enjoy the visit rather than do anything special.
Speaking of buying what you want, I did decide to go ahead and get an Instant Pot again... I sold my other one when I quit making yogurt, a couple years back. It was a 3-quart, and just too small for much else. Walmart has their 6-quart ones on sale for $50 right now. I need to learn how to use it again.
Regarding Amazon Prime - We are also now using the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa card for our daily expenditures. I pay it off fully every week, so never incur interest--but the rewards are much better than the previous card. We literally earned enough in rewards already to pay the Prime membership for a year--when your entire expenditure goes through one card, the rewards points add up fast.
Time for my second cup of tea...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

We have three credit cards that have cash back rewards. We put nearly everything including utility bills on one of the credit cards so we get lots of cash back. We pay off the cards at the end of each month. We use them for simplicity, not to buy something we can't afford.
I baked cookies with my mother when I was a child but stopped long before I left home. I am grateful to not be obligated to make holiday preparations with anyone or for anyone. I enjoy seeing the outdoor decorations in my neighborhood when I walk in the morning and the evening.
Lanette, I applaud your efforts to limit electric use. I realized that turning the furnace up a degree or making use of other benefits of electricity is the treat I allow myself much like others buy jewelry, clothing, furniture, or restaurant meals as special treats.
Barbie in NW WA2 -
Rosemary I think you are on the right track. I have learned so much by listening to holistic vets during online dog summit. Here is Minnesota our bodies crave carbs this time of year because it is often grey and our days are getting shorter. Unfortunately you are correct too many carbs can create insulin resistance. If you look at your coke it is still made with high fructose corn syrup that your body has a hard time processing. They use it because it is cheap.
It is worse for dogs because their bodies are even less able to process too many carbs than ours. Learning more and more why dry dog food is bad for dog's health. Now with the price of food skyrocketing many companies are tweeting their recipes with cheaper ingredients. Fillers are often starches which can be just as bad as sugars. This is also happening in people food too. I try to eat very little processed food and try to watch my sugars and starches.
I am now having Drew only a mostly raw diet. Very high in protein because this is a species appropriate diet for her. Fortunately she is small 12 pounds so she is not as expensive to feed her. I do give her fermented raw goats milk for calcium and probiotics and that is the most expensive food I give her. Still I think it is cheaper than vet bills.
What I learned about microbes from food that help to keep me healthy. Learned in Pet Summit.I may have mentioned this before...One of the most fascinating talks was on what had happened to our gut biome. She showed what was believed to be our biome pre agriculture. Our microbes were much more diverse. Agriculture started to change that and the biome became less. As population rose and modern farming practices grew the biome shrank. Then with the advent of antibiotics and herbicides that kill the microbes in the soil (think Roundup) it is even smaller. Then enter the pandemic where some were even wiping down their food with Clorox wipes brought in from the store. Unfortunately these practices kill the good along with the bad which leaves us vulnerable when the bad take over. This knowledge is changing the way I view the quality of food and how I go about my daily life. I still use soap but anti- bacterial is out for me. When I can and when I can afford it I buy organic. Products at least have to say no GMO's. It is not the tweaking of the genes that is so bad to me it is the use of the herbicides that kill the microbes in the soil. It is those microbes that are in healthy balance keeps me healthy.1 -
Y'all have inspired me to apply for the Prime Visa card! As much as I shop on Amazon, I might as well get some credit for my spending. This is difficult for me because I have not used a credit card in 15 years. I have been paying for everything as I go using my debit card.
Christmas/Thanksgiving Baking: My husband has already requested a fruit cake. And, I will be making my Southern cornbread dressing. My DnL's mom has been so kind for inviting us for almost all holidays during the last few years. I am at the point in life where I cannot handle getting ready for the event at my house and neither can my husband. I will probably make brownies.
Carol in GA4 -
Carol - I totally understand using a debit card for everything, but for purchases especially online; most credit cards will help you with issues with vendors (stuff doesn't come, it isn't right...) and will help with fraud. Some debit cards also provide those serves but most do NOT... So checking with the bank that provides the debit card is always a good idea. It is in all the small print, but I have found that going into the bank with the paper work and asking the questions means some nice staff member can show me where what I want to know is... the last time I got a new debit card it came with 3 pages of tiny tiny print.

Ginny- that is a good possibility- I keep it between 1000 and 1100 and have for a long time.
I have a phone appointment this Friday with the dietician at Kaiser. Looking forward to hearing what she says. I have kept it that low for so long so hard to go over it- MFP says I should be eating 1200. I keep it a little under in case I am not tracking exactly right. I never use any of my exercise "points"-
Today I might eat a little closer to 1200 but I will also have about 20,000 steps in by the end of the day with my walk at the wetlands and an hour of zumba tonight.

No fees to have the card.
That is the only credit card I use.
Nice to have points to use on things so getting stuff with no cash going out.
We switch back and forth on who gets points when we do large purchases(car repairs, home repairs, cruise,,,,,) Dh has his Sony card and gets points on that then uses the points for Sony products.
