Nice running @kgirlhart ! I'm surprised you ran in shorts at those temps, but we are all different. I much prefer to be sweaty than shivering from the cold. Great job on the 5Ks too! And, almost to your month goal already. You are a beast!
@eleanorhawkins Glad they didn't find anything, but it's frustrating when they say it's "stress, so stress less." Much easier said than done. I hope you can figure it out so you feel better.
Another nice run @tarun_yadavA .
@Teresa502 Glad you had company for your run today. It was 17F here. Way to cold for me to run outdoors. You amaze me.

@Teresa502 I loved your story of your first 5k. You're a runner!! I totally had that imposter syndrome thing when I started racing. Even as a solid middle of the pack runner, I still feel like I have to downplay things when talking to other runners. Sometimes I still feel like everyone around me is faster, more experienced.
@SummerSkier Do you get bruised toenails easily? I just very recently got a tiny bit of bruising on one of my big toenails. I think it's a side effect of the recent significant bump in mileage and not due to a problem with my shoes. My feet have always been pretty bulletproof, but I always hear these stories about people getting black toenails and them falling off.

11/1: 5 miles
11/3: 10 miles
11/5: 16 miles
11/6: 5 miles
11/7: 9.5 miles
11/9: 5 miles
11/10: 11 miles
11/11: 8 miles
11/12: 10 miles
11/13: 7 miles

11:16: 11 miles
11/17: 6.5 miles
11/18: 16 miles
11/20: 5 miles
Easy 5 miles on the treadmill yesterday. My achilles felt ok through the majority of my run, with just a few twinges just before I hit 5 miles, so I cut it off there.
I did a bunch of reading and found a few things to try to help keep it from becoming a problem again. Calf raises, straight leg and bent, seem to be the major consensus. It stresses the tendon just the right amount to allow it to heal stronger and keeps your calf from shortening even more as it gets tight and making it worse. Also, glute activation exercises. Is it just me, or does it seem like everything comes back to strong glutes? I actually noticed during my 16 miler that when I did my form check later in the run and focused on activating my glutes that the pain was actually better. So, I think I may have gotten a little lazy with that recently. So, I am mixing some activation exercises into my prerun routine and focusing on that while running.
Now, I am fighting the urge to make up miles. This would have been my first and probably only 200 mile month. With a couple of missed runs now, it's not going to happen. Usually, my goals don't affect me that way as they are just the mileage I estimate from my plan. I know I need to just let it go. Nothing good comes of making up a handful of miles and I could end up overtraining or injuring myself. Oh, well.4 -
@martaindale good to hear your Achilles is feeling better. I agree with you about the calf raises. I have been doing them religiously this year, and for the first year EVER, I have not had my typical lower leg (shin splints, calf, Achilles) injuries (well a few days of panic, but nothing that kept me from running).
Also agree not to go for the 200 mile month. It is a cool goal, but your health and staying injury free is more important than an arbitrary mileage goal.
@Teresa502 I also enjoyed hearing about your first 5K race and your journey.
@kgirlhart you are much tougher than me. No way could I go for a run in shorts and t-shirt @ 36F!!3 -
@martaindale my physio has had me doing calf drops and raises off a step religiously ever since I wrecked my legs training for and running my first half. So yes to those, and go get a sports massage. Making up missed miles is never a good idea, remember your goal is to finish your race. I had the same thing and had to keep reminding myself not to let perfection get in the way of progress.
Re toenails... I think I do something strange with my toes when I run, that first HM also gave me a couple of black toenails and since I started running around rocky mountain trails I gave up on them completely 😂 It's a good job I don't like the beach!5 -
43.6/70 mile goal
I unexpectedly got called into work today. I had an appointment at 9:45 so only worked from about 10 - 4. I hope to get in a run in the morning, so opted for a driveway wun tonight. Was a true wun, with very little running thrown in to keep my HR up. It was 47°F, which felt a little chilly to me, but once I got going I was glad I decided on a driveway wun and not the treadmill. I did 2 miles in 29:05 min. Avg HR was 125 bpm. Max was 137 bpm.
@martaindale You are correct about the sweaty clothes being cold. I forgot about that part. LOL Great job at listening to your body and stopping at 5 miles. Also smart to try to let go of those few miles you missed and not overdo and injure yourself. You are doing awesome. I'm glad you have found things that seem to be helping your Achilles.

Hi all - I have been reading along and hugging/liking as appropriate. S much great running going on!
I have gotten a few runs in. I has been so windy and dry here and now it is hot too. Supposed to be near 90 on Thanksgiving Day - yuck! I know so many of you have cold but I would really rather have cold than hot and dry. The humidity levels have been under 10% which makes my nose hurt and bleed and my allergies are going crazy from the dust. I was going to run today but the humidity levels should be a bit better tomorrow so I decided to run errands today instead.
Yesterday when I ran we had a coyote apparently behind us when we came off the trail, maybe 20 feet back of us. I heard some people and turned to look at them and saw it. The coyote stopped and then ran at an angle across from us to a neighbor's lawn. The people who were out scooped up their pups and kids and put them inside as we all watched the coyote. It was clearly injured and not using one of its hind legs. I'm not sure exactly what it was thinking, maybe hoping someone would help it... It went first into the bushes by the house and then came out and just sat in the yard watching us watch it. I took some pictures and when I realized it wasn't going anywhere, called animal services. I hope they were able to find it, get it some care and relocate it.Oh and the run was short but felt amazing for once!!
Last Thursday we took a drive up to apple country looking for some specialty apple butter for Christmas gifts. My husband wasn't feeling well but didn't tell me until we were there and then they didn't have any apple butter available. ☹️ They had a festival this last weekend and I suspect they were holding it back for that. All that to say, Hobbes had a wonderful time so pictures under the split for @SummerSkier

From everything I have read or been told it is a chain from your hips/glutes all the way down to your feet. If there is an issue at the top of the chain it can impact everything else down the chain. Same thing the other way too... If there is an issue at the bottom of the chain (shoes) it can through everything off all the way up the chain. So yes, it does often come back to strong glutes as they help keep everything else in alignment

Morning all. Got my 5 Miler in before 10am kickoff5

@shanaber Great running! I hope the weather is better for you today. I also hope animal control was able to help the coyote. Hobbes looks so dapper in that first picture. Love his Christmas PJs.
Great job in getting out and getting your run in @tarun_yadavA .2 -
@shanaber Hobbes looks so dignified, as always, wearing his bow tie! I hope they got the coyote some help. It's clearly hurt, and badly enough to overcome the skittishness they usually have. We have them everywhere is TX too but it's rare to actually see one. I hear them yipping from time to time though.eleanorhawkins wrote: »Making up missed miles is never a good idea, remember your goal is to finish your race. Yes, exactly! I am such a perfectionist. I like things to go to plan. Usually that works to my benefit with training because I am really good about not skipping runs and rescheduling them if something unexpected comes up. This injury is pushing me into being more flexible, and that is hard for me.4 -

@martaindale yes, exactly, one of the reasons I'm trying a time and zone based plan now instead of miles and pace is because if those numbers are there I will either force myself to nail them, whether or not I should, or be convinced the world will end if I don't!3 -

Thank you 😊 @quilteryoyo1 -
I worked from home today so opted to get outside for a run at lunch when it was sunny and 48F instead of before work when it was dark and 25F. I did a 40-minute lower body workout this morning that involved a lot of plyo jumping alternating with weighted moves. The lady I am following was a former track athlete so she's all about strengthening the glutes and everything lower body.
@shanaber - I understand about the hot and dry weather being hard also. I never knew how dry it was on that side of the country until I hiked the Grand Canyon last year and Utah this year. Thanks for the Hobbes fix! He's so darn cute!
@quilteryoyo - Are you running the Greeneville Turkey Trot 5K on Thursday morning? Our track club is timing it and I may end up helping out if the timing coordinator doesn't get a couple more volunteers.

Stuck to the treadmill again last night. Watched a movie to help keep me distracted. I had to wait until evening, so it was dark (not usually a problem), 40 F (cold but again not usually a problem), and raining (individually, not a problem). The combo was more than I could handle. Per the discussion earlier this month, cold and wet is a combo I just don't like to mess with if I can avoid it. It's the one time I allow myself to break the "train in all conditions because you never know what race day will bring" mantra. The chance of me getting 40's and rain during my race weekend is really low. I am more likely to deal with slightly too warm temps in FL than anything.
I cut the run a couple miles short because my lower calf and Achilles started hurting and I was trying to make good decisions. I'm a little stiff this morning. I have another run scheduled today and a massage this evening.6 -
@Teresa502 You're so good about getting strength workouts done! I'm trying to work a few exercises into the routine. Baby steps. I had such intentions heading into this training cycle of doing strength work. I have really fallen off of it as the time commitment has climbed. I need to win the lottery so I don't need to work and can schedule my life around my hobbies instead of work!5

😭😭😭 My left Achilles started hurting today on this run. The right one was a little achy from the beginning but got really sore after the first few miles. About that time, the left one also started hurting. While it was definitely uncomfortable the amount of pain was relatively stable. Everything I've been reading doesn't suggest taking a total rest as it's not necessarily helpful in this situation, as long as you're not pushing the effort. A lot of articles specifically mentioned laying off of speed work and high intensity workouts. So, I'm focusing on keeping the pace easy and trying to complete the mileage. Within reason.
Also, from what I've been reading it can take a couple of weeks before any benefit from doing the exercises starts to kick in. so, I guess I should expect at least some pain while I'm running for the next couple of weeks. I just hope that it doesn't get any worse.5 -
Dang @martaindale sorry to hear about your dual Achilles pain 😒 Sucky time for this to happen, but hopefully they will loosen up soon.
@shanaber Hobbes is so handsome and regal! Love seeing pictures of him.
8 miles tonight. Wanted to get a longish run outside since it is supposed to rain the rest of the week. Was feeling good, but right after mile 2 my right calf tightened up. Stayed that way until mile 6, then loosened up. After I was done it felt right again. Need to keep an eye on it.

Just one short mile yesterday for the streak. I was pretty tired and considered walking, but it was cold and so I ran.
Today I ran 5 miles. It was am oddly nice run. It was 35°F feels like 32°. I wore capri tights and a t-shirt with sleeves and gloves. Plus my earband. I was definitely chilly starting out, but I was not overdressed. I guess I would rather be a little chilly than too warm. I just find it very uncomfortable to be cold and hot and sweaty at the same time.
When I first stepped outside the sky was clear and the stars looked really bright. But as I headed west towards the park I noticed it was foggy and soon I was completely enveloped by the fog. Then as I got close to home the sky was clearing again and the moon was just lovely.
@shanaber Great pictures of the coyote. I hope that animal control was able to help and relocate him. And Hobbes looks so handsome in his holiday wear.
@martaindale Sorry you are still having Achilles issues.

Hello everyone! 😊
9k in the rain. Wet, wet shoes - all the things!4 -
@martaindale have you considered you might need new shoes? I know when my shins start to hurt that I need to donate the pair which causes it.
@tarun_yadavA yuck to running in the rain. Stuff those shoes with paper towels!
@shanaber HOBBES is amazing! thank you for posting the photos!
I have been better about putting my miles into the challenge and I think we might make it across the ocean SOON!
@kgirlhart you are having a pretty high mileage month for Nov it seems. For you and those who wear "sleeves" tell me more about them? I haven't tried but it seems like they would bug me being tight on my arms light that.
Mileage 105.5 to date out of 120 goal.
@scott6255 it seems like we are in a drizzly rainy weather pattern. But at least it is supposed to warm up this week. Hope your calf behaves itself!!! taper time yet?
@Teresa502 that is the TRUE perk of WFH. RUnning at lunch when the morning is TOO cold. I haven't really had to use it yet but I expect Jan and Feb to be similar to your weather. I get to WFH on Tuesday and Thursday so that is my plan.6 -
@Teresa502 I did not sign up for the Turkey Trot. I have to be at my neighbors for lunch before 11, so not sure I would have time for it. I hate that I might miss seeing you though.
@martaindale I sure don't blame you for running on the treadmill with those conditions outside. And, great job on listening to your body. What race are you running? I hope your Achilles tendons don't get any worse and the exercises kick in sooner rather than later.
Great running @Scott6255 ! I hope your calf stays feeling good.
@kgirlhart Nice running and great picture of the moon.
@tarun_yadavA Nice sleasy run in the rain.
I had intended to get up early enough for a longish run yesterday, but got a late start on the treadmill. I wasn't feeling the best and once I started running knew it wasn't going to happen. I only managed a one mile run, but walked 2 miles at 3.8 mph. I started feeling some better during the walk, but by then I didn't have time to start running again. I do feel much better this morning. I was just glad yesterday wasn't race day.6 -

Training for Dopey is a huge time commitment and you are doing so good with following your plan. I loved my week in Hilton Head a couple of weeks ago. Since it was just me, I could run, walk, bike, do yoga and stretching anytime I wanted day or night. I got up at 4 am one morning to watch the lunar eclipse because I knew I could take a nap later in the day if I wanted. It was so freeing and relaxing! Now to just win that lottery so that every week can be that way!6 -

I ran 5.5 miles today. It was 53°F. That is so much better for me than 35°. 🙂 It was cloudy and pretty humid, but the nice temperature made up for it. About a half mile from home it started to feel damp. It wasn't raining, just moisture droplets in the air. I was glad I was almost home because it would probably have started to feel chilly . But all in all it was a great run. And I have hit my goal for November. 🏃♀️
@summerskier I really like wearing sleeves. I usually get too warm in a jacket and I don't like wearing a jacket tied around my waist. I can just fold the sleeves up and put them in my pocket. Plus most of my runs are early when it is still dark and I am wearing my Noxgear vest so I would have to take that off to take the jacket off and then put it back on. I have a couple of long sleeved shirts, but I prefer the removable sleeves to pushing my sleeves up when I get warm.

Checking in again. First attempt at running after the bit of surgery. I still have the sutures in thus I probably should not be running, but I tried it very carefully and they're on a place with little strain - unless I suddenly decide to point my toes like a ballet dancer. Didn't expect it to work anyway, and nope, not such a big success. But I'll get there again. Anyway, so good to be out again.8 -
Decided to give the calf a break and got on the treadmill for a slow 5 miles. The pain wasn't a zero, but maybe 0.5 or 1. So I think it will be 100% in a day or two. Whew!
Official taper starts next week. This week is just a cutback week. Marathon in 17 days! 😳
7 -
@SummerSkier give the sleeves a go, they're cheap and if you do like them they're super useful, as @kgirlhart explained. I thought they would annoy me, but I like them :-)
@yirara hang in there, sometimes it's best to let things heal properly.
@Scott6255 glad the calf is calming down, enjoy the taper crazies!
This is going to be a funny week for me where running is concerned. The last full week of the month is always a cutback week on these new plans I'm following, so I knew mileage was going to be low. Probably for the best, though seeing the low monthly totals after months of higher mileage is messing with my head a bit.
Anyway, I swapped the 2-hour mountain run for 2 hours in the countryside/hills on Monday as I didn't have a car to get to the mountain. There's a very small (not quite 2 miles) race nearby on Sunday as part of events to mark the international day for the elimination of violence against women, so I signed up for that and decided warming up for it and running it would count as the 45-minute progression run. That left me with 2x45 min easy runs to do. BUT then I saw the big running club from the city was doing an evening mountain run last night and I couldn't miss the opportunity to get in some technical training in the dark! It was very slow and the footing was very tricky... these mountains are very rocky and sandy, so they scare the *kitten* outta me but I definitely need the experience on them! There was one point on the way back down that I had slammed the brakes on so much that the fast group was out of sight, and the very very slow group was a long way behind me so I was basically on my own in the dark on the side of a mountain. Character building, that stuff.
The great thing about that group is their Wednesday sessions really are for all levels, the speedy types go ahead and the slower types stay at the back and they all regroup regularly. Shame I don't live closer so can rarely train with them.

Good Morning everyone!
Got my 9K in!
I hope all you guys in the US have a lovely Thanksgiving!
Enjoy your 'Turkey trots' ... And actual Turkeys too! 😊7 -
I'm back! Been a while.
It's getting too cold for cycling so I put away the bike for winter, and finally finally I got so antsy that I convinced my lazy self that running would be a good idea. 3km to start turning back into a runner.9
