good morning. Hit my 100 yesterday for the month just in time for storm elliot to hit later today. 1 more run and then I might have to hibernate tomorrow. At least there is no ice and the ground temp is still warm this time. I think this storm is hitting all the US so everyone be careful. I am at 1523 for the year so no way will I hit 1600 but I am proud of bringing my tennis game back into the mix since Oct and hope that my ole bod will continue to allow me to play as I want. (the jury is still out on that!)7

@SummerSkier truly amazing!! 🙌2 -
Your are starting out great @sahibachahalxoxo !
Great running @Scott6255 . You can get those miles in. That's an huge amount of running for the year.
Nice run @kgirlhart . I love that you saw the deer. Glad your rest day is a cold day.
@tarun_yadavA Another excellent run. You burned enough calories to offset those mince pies.
Congrats on hitting your 100 mile goal already @SummerSkier ! Glad you didn't get any ice. That's what I am hoping will happen here. We shall see in the morning. You have an excellent yearly mileage too! I am happy that you got back into playing tennis this year and hope you are able to continue into 2023.

Haven't been running - lots of swimming and walking/hiking to rehabilitate my "mature" left hip.
Unfortunately the Pool is closed right now due to the bad weather and will be closed in January as they rebuild some of the internal concrete structures that have reached their End of Life cycle.
Right now we are in the middle of the Cold Weather Super Storm that is blasting most of Canada and pushing into the USA. So most of the local schools are officially closed - but the main door is open and the entrance hall and washrooms are available as emergency shelter for anyone in trouble.
It would be like bunking down on an airport floor. Not exactly comfortable but at least safe.
The attached screen shot from the weather network says it all.
Note the Windchill factor and the sunrise/sunset times. Dark and cold.
Best Wish's to anyone who is traveling and safe journey.4 -
Yesterday I hiked a little over 8 miles on the Appalachian Trail and my legs were really feeling it today. Sore calves and just generally tired. It wasn't a particularly hard section. Only 2,157 feet in elevation gain but I definitely felt it. Today is our last day of nice weather before the artic air hits and I wanted to get out and get a run in. I made an attempt but was really dragging so I called it at 3 miles. Better than nothing.
@juliet3455 - good to "see" you. I just can't imagine those temperatures! I don't know how the animals survive. It's supposed to get to -2F here tonight and I'm worried about my "stray" cat. I really shouldn't classify him as a stray as he has been here over a year now. He lets me get right beside him but he doesn't like to be touched. I've fixed him some shelter outside but I'm going to try to coax him into the garage tonight.4 -
@eleanorhawkins - I agree with what the others said about making the correct decision to turn around. Self-preservation is a good thing and it does get stronger with age! When we were younger taking a fall and jumping back up and continuing n was no big deal but as we get older our brains kick in and let us know ahead of time how much that fall 'could' hurt!
@juliet3455 - wow! So cold!
@tarun_yadavA - I love mince as well. Made mince cookies for family and will be making a mince pie for us since I have leftover mince from the cookies. For whatever reason it has gotten difficult to find here. Fortunately I ordered a couple of jars on Amazon last year. I used to find the British brands in a couple of places here but no longer...
@SummerSkier - Congratulations on getting to your 100 mile goal again! Where does that put you for the year?
@AlphaHowls - Have you tried one of those SAD lamps? My daughter in Seattle has had some success with one. I was reading the other day about a runner who had run some number of HMs in a row to break a record. He was nowhere close to the number of days that you have!
Welcome to our new runners - this is a great supportive, very chatty, group! Please let us know how you are doing and jump into the conversations.
I am finally caught up after being away and getting so, so far behind. Holiday preparations, errands, etc.. have gotten in the way of running here and there but I have gotten in a few. Seeing that I am only a little over 50 miles for the month there is no way I will hit my goal this month. I am also experiencing a lack of mojo and feeling very frustrated with not being able to run as I have in the past. I know I can't expect to be able to run now the same as I was able to when I was at peak 10 years ago, but I did seriously expect more improvement this year. I keep telling myself to just be thankful to still be running and that not many my age are able to. I am already thinking about goals for next year though. Probably focusing on shorter, higher quality runs and improving my pace. We'll see - still figuring it out.
Weather - @SummerSkier not all states are being hit by the horrible cold. We are actually expecting a heat wave with very hot weather on Christmas Day. It is one of the things I really dislike about living in So CA. The 1st Christmas after we moved here (I was in HS) it was 96F on Christmas Day. My mom put ornaments on a cactus instead of a Christmas tree and I cried, missing the white Christmas and cold of Idaho. This year it won't be quite that hot but I still won't be happy with it.
Stay warm and safe my friends!!8 -
@shanaber - homemade mince pies 🤤
I am a fiend. Lol
Shame you can't get them easily where you are in the US

I know about the lamps, never had one. I believe any light works, do not sit in the dark. Light up rooms, fill the world with light! I also take St. John's Wort. I really do not sit long enough to sit with a light.
I am pretty sure I have a record of something. In order to get an official record, I would need two witnesses. I really do not think another "weirdo" exists much less two of them, that would get up at strange hours and follow me around. Since being on strava, I have found my tribe. There are other people out there that run a.l.o.t!@Laurz9191 wrote: »@Fit2btied2016 I hope we will get to see some puppy pictures soon. I am curious .
@AlphaHowls It’s really remarkable that you do your running inside your house. I agree with the boredom assessment. There is always something one can do to not “be bored”. My kids would often beg to differ, at least verbally, but I think that is a standard response. It’s an important skill to learn how to entertain oneself .
Agreed! I categorize it the same as:
"I don't know"
"I'm fine"
I'm bored"
"I can't"
I just do not accept the 'standard answers' from myself or my clients.

I didn't post my run yesterday, but I did run. I didn't quite beat the arctic blast. When I checked the weather before I went out it was 43°F feels like 36°. It felt colder to me, and when I got home it was 27°F feels like 13°. The 20 mph winds were bitterly cold and it was a difficult run. I turned around at 2 miles and ended up with 4.25 miles total. Bt the time I went to work it was 19° and snowing. We never had rain though so there was no ice and the wind was blowing so much that there was no accumulation. I am glad I ran yesterday, but glad that today is a rest day. It is 12°F out there, feels like 0°. 🥶
@tarun_yadavA I have never had mince pies. To be honest, I am not really sure what they are.
@juliet3455 Good to see you! I cannot imagine those temperatures.

13 deg feels like wtf happened here. Electric still working tho and the wind was so strong overnight it blew the pilot out on my hot water heater. Hopefully when the sun comes out it will start the warm up trend. I checked the plants in the garage when I relit the pilot and the cup of water with them is not frozen so the light is working altho it is pretty chilly in there. Not going anywhere out side for a while I think. I am still blown away by parts of the country and Canada that can be below -30 F.... I mean that's like antarctica right?

@kgirlhart - it's a seasonal festive snack here that shows up in November and December. Sweet thing (despite the name 'Mince'... And no actual meat in it!). Like a (mini) sweet pie filled with mildly boozy candied fruits.5

@tarun_yadavA That sounds yummy!
For some reason the Brits insist on consuming sticky, sweet, possibly alcohol-soaked dried/candied fruit concoctions at xmas.5 -
@kgirlhart @SummerSkier Brrrr! Glad it sounds like your power held up. We lost power briefly yesterday just as it was dipping below freezing. It made me nervous for the night but it stayed on and we dripped faucets appropriately so didn't lose water either. Whew! I'm supposed to run today but I may stick to the treadmill. IDK if I own the right clothing for these temps.
@tarun_yadavA Congratulations on 1600 miles!!6 -
@shanaber I hear you on the hot Christmas. When we first moved to Houston we had a super hot Christmas. I remember my husband and I going into the back yard after dark to build a trampoline for my kid's Santa gift and sweating so much. Totally didn't feel like Christmas.
@juliet3455 Wow. That wind chill is hard to imagine.1 -

I drove back to Houston yesterday and made it home just as the wind was picking up. I hustled to get out before it got too cold. Luckily I checked the weather before I left and saw the temps would drop almost 10 degrees while I was out and the wind chill was no joke. I was worried I was overdressed but it ended up being perfect. Also lucky was that for most of the run I had trees or fences to take the worst of the wind. In the few places where I was going straight into wind it was blowing me upright and cutting straight through my layers. I definitely could not have done an entire run fully exposed to that wind.
Gotta run today too. I'm waiting out the weather a bit to see if I can get outside. If not, treadmill and an episode or 2 of The White Lotus is the plan.5 -
Not as cold as Canada, but it's cold.
How cold is it? It is so cold, I have ice forming on the inside window of my back door -3 °F when I got up -23 °F Wind Chill
When sometimes you have to do the weird things:
Yes, I keep $20.00 in my cell phone...
