What Was Your Work Out Today?

Slacking on the posts, but updates from the last few days:
Tuesday - pilates class
Wednesday - arm and core work at the gym, finished with 20 minutes on the bike
Thursday - yoga
Not been able to get my steps in as much as I'd like this week because of work, will try to do some extra at the weekend.3 -
Not scheduled to go to open row session, went anyway; rowed around 6k in bow of a double with one of our new learn-to-row guys (nice guy who's probably 1/3 my age ). He's rowing quite well for this stage, so I rowed in most of the time with him. (Usually I spend a lot of time setting up - i.e., stabilizing the boat - so the new person can row more without tippiness. He was doing well enough not to need that.)2

Yesterday - seven or eight hours of paddling to survey for invasive aquatic weeds. We explored lots of back channels and sloughs. We did find some offenders, and we had people with us to spray them out. We did fine one large infestation that will have to get sprayed another time - we didn't have staff or enough herbicide to take care of that one. We found a known infestation that was treated last year. It was much better, and we did the second treatment that might eradicate it as a source of future infestation. That felt good.
Today I did about five hours of hiking to see wildflowers up in the Cascades. I explored an additional trail I hadn't been on yet, and it was more of a route than a trail. Kicked my butt. Part of that was probably breathing the wildfire smoke that was in the air. Part was just being up over 5000 feet and hiking in the hot sun.
Tomorrow I go spend a few days paddling a river I love and camping with friends along the way.7 -
@mtaratoot - You post the best scenery pictures. Paddling and camping in that area must be a great getaway.
Back home from a beach camping trip. Rode the bikes both days and did a nice kayaking trip on Long Island Sound yesterday. Got lucky with two sunny days in a row. Rain on us today during the ride home.
Tomorrow, I'll join a small group of friends who are preparing for a HIM race on Labor Day. It's one of my favorite bike routes. The weather forecast calls for sunny skies. Will see.

back/pull day.
In order:
5x5 barbell bent over rows (strength focused workout today).
2x12 ez curl bar pullovers
2x12 Standing staight bar pulldowns (lat isolation, getting too much activation of my triceps on the ez curl bar pullovers today)
3x12 ez curl bar curls standing. Feels good to get in a cheat rep or 2 on the last set.
das it.4 -

Thanks for the kind words. I've really been soaking it up since I retired. I will keep sharing.
The picture that is looking down a ridge is the view from Cone Peak (~5600 feet) over towards Iron Mountain (~5400 feet). The first picture is a Cascade Lily; I've never seen one before that I know of. The picture of the mountain that's below the lupines along the trail is looking back up at Cone Peak. The rock gardens were full of flowering sedum and other small plants. There were obviously lupines. There were lomatium. There were columbine. There were huckleberries for a quick snack. So much to see.5 -
I'm sure you'll be super-surprised: I rowed this morning, bow of the double, usual distance. Pretty perfect day on the water.
It'd been a while since I rowed double with this guy, so we did a certain amount of "just row", but we did throw in a few more intense power pieces. In between, we worked on some focused technical improvements, and each power piece was a little faster than the previous one, which was fun.
ETA: @mtaratoot, I'm envious. Michigan has way too few mountains for best visuals. Yeah, we have things called "mountains" in the Northernmost peninsula (the "Porcupine Mountains"), but they're only called that in contrast to the flat extreme South of the state, I'm pretty sure. Your photos are excellent.4 -

Nothing yesterday as I was in a job interview/assessment all day, did get my steps in walking around London though.
Boxing class today along with a trip to the dump with a very heavy door! And lots of cooking and cleaning so far just getting odd jobs done. Every little helps.
Nothing but wind and rain here this afternoon (summer? What summer?!) So definitely indoor jobs for the rest of the day.2 -
Rode one of my favorite routes today under sunny skies and lower humidity. Four of us did a 55 mile out and back route with a loop at the top. We faced a stiff headwind on the way out, but the air was refreshing for a change. The big rains have left our rivers swollen, so we enjoyed lots of white water viewing for much of the ride. Rode at a 15.7 mph ave pace, which is a base building effort according to Garmin.

Another coached row today, total around 9k. We had 3 singles, a double, and a quad in the group, with me in bow of the quad. There were several timed pieces, multiple practices of racing starts (most of them going into a timed piece), and one 2k piece.
Two of the guys in singles are racing Canadian Henley in a couple of weeks, so they did the 2ks according to their race plan. Those of us in the other boats (race plan-less) just worked for a strong pace we thought we could sustain for the distance. We also did some one- and two-part pause drills, and a couple of different "cut the cake" drills.
I have to say, steering - my job in bow - is more difficult and stressful when rowing faster, and with that many boats strung out across the width of a non-straight river, plus other more-beginner rowers out here and there in singles and a few fishing boats besides. My performance was sub-ideal, but we didn't hit anything, at least. Kinda close, though. 😬2 -
Chest and shoulders (upper body “push” day)
Standing OHP 3x10
Uppercut flies 3x15
Tricep Pushdown (rope) 3x15
Internal and External Rotations 3x15 each.
Das it.3 -
Canoeing for a couple days. I was camping with friends fairly far up a very nice river about two hours south. It was with one of my paddling clubs where most folks live a couple hours north. I rarely go up there for day trips; when they come south, they spend a few days. I joined 'em. Yesterday was about 10.5 miles and today we did a portion of the same section but only 5.5 miles. I wanted to get home and water bonsai, and the section most folks did up above had some bigger rapids, and I really didn't want to swim from the canoe in that cold water. Frankly, I would have been fine, but the extra time savings was for sure worth it. I need a new whitewater canoe paddle; mine is a bit too long. Maybe one day I'll try a more modern whitewater canoe; the one I'm using now is a Mad River Outrage. They don't make 'em anymore. I like it. Fast. Very little initial stability, so it wants to chuck you in the water when you get in. But it's smooth and stable on edge, and I can snap it into relatively small eddies.
No pictures this time because I left the phone/camera in camp. Swimming is a much bigger possibility from this canoe and in this water. The river is very continuous, and a swim would be long and potentially painful, and it might mean a lost boat. I was glad when a third person decided to join us for a short day today.
Tomorrow will be hiking or a rest day or maybe.... paddling.5 -
15 minutes early morning elliptical trainer both yesterday and today. I ran on a treadmill yesterday afternoon for 20 minutes, and again this morning for 25 minutes. I'd considered swimming today but the center's website had the pool closed today.3

Instead of my full upper body lifting session, today turned into an impromptu testing day on my bench press. Haven't tried pressing a 1RM in years, not since I injured my shoulders (narrowly avoiding surgery), but my weight I've been doing sets of five on today felt light, so on my final set I tried to see how many reps I could get...11.
This really had me pumped, so I decided to see how my current 1RM compared to my lifetime 1RM, adding 10# each set for a single rep. Finally failed on my fifth set, 50# more than I've been using and only 10# short of my lifetime best. Considering I haven't tried to go that heavy in years, I'm quite pleased. So much so that my dream of hitting 3 plates per side has breathed new life again. I'll take the increases FAR slower this time than I did as a an impatient younger lifter, but by golly, it feels good to feel that fire again!4 -
Yesterday was horse riding day, quick 45 minute ride as weather wasn't quite on our side but used it as an opportunity to focus on position in the seat. My mum always says "but you don't do anything you just sit there!" Funnily enough she's never offered to get on and give it a go to see how "easy" it is!
Today I did an hour full body workout in the gym this morning, plus spin class this evening. Also got a 45 minute walk in.3 -
Moderate steady-state row in bow of the double, the usual just under 7k. Light attendance in our group row this morning. I was in the double with someone who's just getting over a sinus infection, so she didn't want to do anything more physically demanding than "just row" at a comfortable pace. Works for me.
Beautiful day on the river: Slightly cooler, near zero wind, sunny, only one power boat out with us (fishing), and our double plus a single.3 -
Catching up on lawn mowing and other chores today. Hoped to get in an open water swim, but forecast called for thunderstorms so I stayed home.
After a few false starts, I've had a few consecutive days of jumping rope as a supplement to other conditioning. While I"m still an absolute beginner, I'm starting to understand that jumping is all about minimizing movement except for wrists and lower legs. I'm trying to focus on "flow" and maintaining a consistent cadence. The idea is to skip rope for 5 minutes a day to develop the habit and build muscle memory without risking overuse injuries.
Small steps to start. If nothing else, this new pastime is providing some laughs for my triathlon pals.

Worked with my upcoming 7th grader who's going out for tight end in middle school football on what types of blocks he can expect to see on the line of scrimmage in football.
We worked on reach blocks, down blocks, straight up blocks, left and right shoulder turns, foot positioning on his stance, how he needs to balance his feet/hand in his 3 point stance, and his footwork for each block to maintain a stable base and absorb a hit from a defender. I went over what foot (and why) for each type of block he's likely to learn.
He's never played tackle football, but my goober is a natural. He had an "oh, that's why we do squats" moment when I explained where the power in blocking comes from.
He's an average sized larger kid (meaning he's big vs school average 6-7th grader, but normal for his projected position) for his age, but he's really put together well and very strong for his age. Don't tell him I said that tho, he has way too much to learn to think he's good already2 -
Injured my foot last night before bed, still sore this morning upon waking at 3am to let the dog outside, decided discretion was the better part of valor and skipped my leg workout today. We'll see how I'm feeling for tomorrow's cardio. I've been walking on it, and my limp is almost gone, so signs are looking positive.3
-
5 minutes of rope skipping as a warm up, then an easy paced 40 minute run. It was my first actual "run" since the race on July 9. Hoped for a swim, but thunder clouds stopped me again.3
-
I'm still doing 15 minutes or more on the elliiptical first thing each morning. It takes the place of walking a dog? I swam 1500 scm yesterday and ran 20 minutes on a treadmill today.5

Foot felt fine when I woke, so I hopped on the elliptical for my typical Wednesday hour of hills. My foot lasted just fine, but I was really huffing and puffing during the middle section (with the highest intensity). Final numbers were about normal in terms of distance covered and calories burned, but it took a lot of effort to get there. Starting to wonder if a single cardio day per week is enough, if I should add a second. Reason I haven't been is trying to bulk up, but I supposed I could simply get a second day of donuts per week to compensate the caloric burn.1

Now that sounds like an all around win......4 -
chest/shoulder day;
Barbell Bench Press 3x12
Flies 3x15
One armed reverse fly 3x15
Cable Side raises 3x20 (I'm between 30 and 40 on my machine with no increments, so more reps, or only do 10?)
Cable Front Raises 3x15
Cable skull crushers 3x15

Another gosh-darn row, this time in stroke of the double, something I haven't done in a long time. One of the guys I row with decided he was ready to try bow (the watching-behind-your-back and steering position) for the very first time ever. He did great!
We took out a Hudson double the club owns, that I've never rowed before. It felt really twitchy (a special variant of tippy) at first, and it seemed like we were riding higher in the water (even though it's the same rower-weight range as other doubles we've rowed), but we settled in OK.
Kept it moderate intensity, largely because the air quality was in the danger zone again here from wildfires, mostly in Canada. Probably a good thing for new-bow guy, too - things don't happen as fast at slower boat speed.
I was supposed to go to open rowing tonight to volunteer-supervise, but it got thunderstormed out.3 -
Weekly hike - about 7.37 miles.
At 1.2 miles there's a fork in the trail. I usually go left and stay on the trail I started on, then after doing the peak loop come down another trail on a different ridge and take another trail that heads back to the place where I had turned left. This time I turned right at the 1.2 mile mark and did that part of the loop in a different direction. I was surprised how different it felt.
All the tiger lilies are gone. Some of the things that were flowering now have fruits. Fireweed is blooming though.
I don't understand why some folks just don't think rules apply to them. Where I parked there is a big sign that says day use only and all vehicles and equipment have to be gone before 22:00. Well, on the far end of the small lot is a little sign on a post that says no motor vehicles and the symbol for no camping (a tent with a slash through it). Over there was a motorcycle parked and a tent pitched. Uhh.... dude.... Then up the trail a nice plastic bag of dog poop that was halfway stuffed under a log. People....

I was going to report today's work but it's turned into yesterday's work now. Elliptical in the morning. One side of my neck was stiff earlier, and I'm guessing it's from the recent return to swimming, so that was cancelled for today. Instead, the old commuter bike was dusted off, tires pumped, and taken for a 35minute spin. This was just an easy ride to get used to the saddle again. Since the riding was easy, I got on the elliptical again in the evening for a bit.4

I practiced jumping rope a bit yesterday, but that was it. Its been too iify in the evenings to try an open water swim at the lake.
Today I'll swim in the morning. We have the last of our local Thursday night sprint distance races set for tonight if the weather allows it. Forecast is for very hot and humid conditions with Tstorms likely. A friend and I are signed up as a relay team. I'll do the bike leg, with my friend swimming and running. I"m definitely the weak link, since she is a USA triathlon qualifier in the women's 40-44 age group. Should be fun!4
