Trying to understand what “run the year” means. Explanation for us newbies to this group is welcomed.
Have the members of this group ever tried to get together in a city for a racing event? Some cities have multiple races in one day, like an 8K, 1/2 marathon and marathon all in the same morning with staggered start times. That way we can each pick what works for us at our level. Maybe an east coast city/date and a west coast city/date? Maybe a set up in other countries depending on where everyone’s from.
Thought it might be fun for some of us to meet each other and do an event together.
Thoughts……3 -
@daria0919 "Run the Year" is just a challenge to run the number of miles in the current year (i.e. 2023).
Some do it as a team, others try to do it individually. Some include walking or other types of steps.
There is a website that you can sign up on that syncs with Garmin or Strava or whatever and keeps track of your progress. There is a fee for that website RunTheYear I am currently doing it individually, just running miles. But didn't sign up on the website, just tracking on my own. I don't need a t-shirt or a medal.
@martaindale I hear you about this stupid weather! It is either hellish hot, or humid, or raining. It didn't rain for 3 months here, but this week it has been raining almost non-stop since I got back from Atlanta Monday afternoon. Hence another 6 TM miles today.

This is the Run the Year Challenge.
You sign up for the challenge and add in your running, walking, whatever exercise miles over the year to try to hit the year in miles, so 2024 miles or whatever you set your goal to be for the year. In the past we have done teams where your miles accumulate together to hit the yearly total.
We have also done a Run the World challenge that we organized more or less by where we all live. I don't recall when that one kicks off though.
@daria0919 - a few of the members have gotten together IRL but it has proven difficult to plan/schedule. There was a meetup in Hawaii for a relay race up a volcano on the Big Island and I know @Teresa502 met @quilteryoyo at a race @quilteryoyo was running.
@chris_in_cal - love that sunset picture! I tried to take one last night when we were at dinner but it did not turn out nearly as brilliant as yours because the marine layer was coming in.
It was in the low 50's this morning cloudy and drizzling so we held off going for a walk or to go to the butterfly grove. When we did get to the grove there were even less butterflies than yesterday because it was too cold and overcast and they tend to huddle up in the trees. When we got back I took Hobbes for another beach walk, not planning to go far. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves and the tide was way out. Ended up going nearly 4 miles and even tried running a little, hitting a 12 min pace. I couldn't maintain it for long but it felt good to have the energy to try.
Not sure if anyone wants to see more beach/ocean pictures but they are under the split because... why not 😊
I have never seen so many sand dollars on a CA beach. This one looked like it was scooting along to get back to the water!7 -
@shanaber thanks for sharing the beautiful beach photos! Love it he dramatic skies, the pup and the sand dollar.
Thanks for sharing the Run the Year info and site. Looks like something I’m going to give a try.
@Scott6255 thanks for the Run the Year info and site as well.2 -
Other questions : what is Strava? An app, I think? Is it free?
I have my Garmin. Who’s using Garmin? And who’s using Strava? I’m not in the loop on all the running technology- I have basically just used the Garmin connect app in the past.2 -
@daria0919 - Strava is an app/website (strava.com) that is also social kind of like MFP. There is a free version or you can pay for the additional features. I use the free version and it works fine for me and I don't really know any longer what the paid version offers.
You can have your runs/walks/workouts synched from whatever running app or device you are using like Garmin or FitBit or you can use Strava directly to record what you are doing. I don't have a Garmin and I am not real fond of the Apple workout app so I use Strava on my Apple Watch to record my runs/walks/workouts.3 -
@shanaber great pics! I'm encouraged to see you maybe being able to ease back into running next year. Cheering you on (in all of it, not just the running part)!6
-
Hello everyone. Just checking in.
Been a week of carnage for me. Did get a welcome workout at the gym in yesterday, but as expected - running a no go.
Catching up on posts...
@shanaber - lovely pics
@AlphaHowls - great running streak, still, even if HM streak broken 🙌.
@daria0919 - 1. Strava is free. And most of us are on it. 2. Meetups... Lol... I asked this question last month maybe. Out of us active users, just @Teresa502 and @quilteryoyo have met up in TN.
I'll see if I can make something work when @eleanorhawkins visits England next year. Stateside... @chris_in_cal and @shanaber might be easiest for me, as my brother lives in California!
Anyways... Trip is going great (lack of exercise and eating badly notwithstanding!).
Done Haridwar and Amritsar.
Former- checked out a temple on a hill, and Hindu pilgrims doing prayer by the River Ganges at night;
Latter, in Amritsar- saw: an outdoor festival where they celebrate a festival called Dussehra (where Lord Ram killed an evil demon) by burning these huge effigies with rockets, then the Golden Temple at night (spectacular), visited a museum all about 1947 Partition, and saw the India-Pakistan border where they do a gate closing ceremony. Which was fun.
Tigers next!
Oh and food... Burger King done too. American fast food chains in India is really interesting from a Geographic perspective. Adaptability of Western chains to local tastes. So India has a lot of vegetarians so about half the menu is vegetarian! Then here's where it gets quirky... Hindus that do eat meat won't touch beef. The cow is considered sacred, so no Beef products here. In addition - around 20% of the population here is Muslim. And Muslims don't eat Pork (opposite- pig is considered dirty or unclean). So out of deference to both faiths... There is no beef or pork on the menus here. So while it's easy enough for a KFC... Burger king is... Weird!
Everything is either vegetarian or chicken. If you're a regular American who lands up in India, and you're a big fan of the XL Big King with Bacon... Ummm don't get too excited when you see the BK sign lol.
(I think other than the Chicken Royale - everything else was either 'Fiery' or 'Tandoori ' or 'Peri Peri'... lots of chilli / chilli Mayos in everything!)McDonalds to do... (The International airport in Delhi has one, so will eat that on the way out next week!)6 -
Oh no @yirara ! I do hope you are feeling better today!
You did great @martaindale . Hahaha I guess Garmin just likes pain.
Nice running @Laurz9191 . Lovely pictures!
Nice running @Mari33a .
You are doing great @mnsmov15 !
I'm so glad to see that you had the energy for a run too @shanaber. Love your beach pictures. Too bad about the monarchs.
Love your travels @tarun_yadavA . I am curious if the vegetarian Whopper at Burger King is made to taste like beef or something else.

I have my Garmin. Who’s using Garmin?
Probably most here use Garmin, it is the oldest 'runners' watch. Fitbit and Apple are very common too. Good smaller players are Suunto and Polar.
This is all the actual watch 'hardware' end of things. MFP, Strava, Training Peaks, and all of these companies' various apps are the software/analysis/social end of things.
Some advice I've heard, that makes a lot of sense is that "All the hardware is basically very similar, go where most of your friends are, because that will keep you going."4 -

You should check out the La Jolla HM or the San Diego Holiday Half. La Jolla HM is beautiful and goes up from Del Mar to the Torrey Pines Mesa and finishes at La Jolla Cove.
@shanaber Let's collaborate and host a "MFP monthly running thread" Race and Meetup at the 2024 version of the La Jolla HM. You in?
We can all wear Team MFP "quilt style" running shirts.
Here's the last push for this kind of thing.
The beautiful La Jolla Half in 2024. Who's ready to form the planning committee?4 -

Yeah, I also have a Garmin. I'm not quite convinced by it's ability to measure distance correctly though. I just need a few trees, even without leaves or some houses lining a street and the measured distance is shorter. Found a solution in the end: I'm using a footpod, without calibration factor and method set to correct distance. Oddly then I get the correct distance (on measured race routes).4 -

As a vegetarian I have no idea what beef tastes like, but I know Burger King here claims their veggie whopper tastes just like what they call a real whopper.
Somehow, I doubt it. They're edible, but generally, the stuff they call meat substitutes that they say taste like the real thing taste like cardboard.2 -
@quilteryoyo @eleanorhawkins hello ladies!
I don't mind the meat substitute stuff like Beyond and Impossible... But don't think they're using that out here in this part of Asia... Looks like some battered chickpea/potato/kidney bean concoction3 -

Eek I haven’t posted since I introduced myself on the 20th. I’ve done 8.2 of my 20. It’s been a mix of outdoors and treadmill! I’ll try to check this thread more regularly!!8

@tarun_yadavA good looking family! Looks like y'all are having fun on your trip. Glad you are enjoying the local sites and food.
More rain this morning. Got in 5 TM miles. Taking tomorrow off work to babysit some workers at the house. So hopefully I can get out for a run before they get here.

I took yesterday as a rest day, and I ran 7 miles today. There were lots of puddles and the humidity was 100%. But it was only 68°, so it wasn't too unpleasant. It is supposed to rain all weekend. I hope I will be able to get my long run in, but today's run puts me at 132 miles for October so I did hit my goal this month.
