WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR NOVEMBER 2023

Good morning ladies!
Up early to see if the storm was going to be bad. Other than being a bit breezy and rainy, I didn't see any evidence of the 30-40 mph gusts some weather channels predicted.
I've been out twice to see how the hens are and both of my raincoats got soaked. I need to see if I saved back any of DH's waterproof ones. They'll hang on me but keep me dry.
I've been watching this Dr. Chatterjee interview: Longevity Professor: The Key Factors To Stop Decline & Slow Aging After 40! | Rose Anne Kenny Terri - are you familiar with her? She's from Ireland and an expert on aging, has written a book that is only available in th UK from what I can tell. The interview is over 2 hours long so I'm broke it into chunks. I thought it was excellent and looked up the TILDA study at Trinity University in Dublin. If the rain keeps up I want to explore this further.
Allie - wow, you had quite a day. Sorry to hear about your friend and how lucky that gal was you were right there when she tripped. I think a lot about your friendships and family who keep you busy. You are a great example of being involved in your community and I'm sure it's healthy for you, even if it's sometimes stressful. See the Rose Anne Kenny interview above.
Vicki - how is that new paging system for the docs working out? I recall you were apprehensive they came up with this when you were on vacation.
Kylia - good for you getting in the steps! I love hearing about all of you ladies who are able to carve out some quality time with your husbands, just watching TV or going for rides together, working on projects. Doing things like with with my DH are among my favorite memories.
I did my "house walking" this morning after breakfast and added something. I carried 2# weights in each hand. Sometimes I swung my arms a little, sometimes I didn't. What gave me the idea was, again, the Rose Anne Kenny interview and how they discussed that if a person can't go to the gym to lift weights, take note of daily activities we can do which accomplish the same thing. Carrying bags of groceries to the car which parked at the back of the lot, for example. Talk about tired arms... that's the point, right? Since I'm already walking, why not add a teeny bit of resistance training?
During the pandemic, many stores eliminated the small shopping baskets - too hard to keep clean, unlike the carts which they could quickly wipe off. So I bought my own little basket from Amazon and take it with me all the time. The problem - or maybe the benefit - is that I load the thing up and it becomes heavier and heavier as I walk through the store. I switch arms. Sometimes I balance it on my hip. By the time I'm ready to check out, it probably weighs 10 to 15 lbs.
Anyhow, when the 2 lb weights become too easy, I'll step up to 3# weights, then 5# or more. I think every little bit helps and hopefully won't put too much stress on my joints. And there's no law that says I can't put them down if I feel a twinge.
That's the quick update.
Happy Veterans Day and to those of you who are veterans or have family members who are or were veterans: Thank you for your service!

Allie So sorry about the day you had yesterday! Such a shock for someone to die suddenly like that. And I’m glad you were there when your friend took that fall. You are such a great help to everyone!
Matcha I LOVE TEVA sandals! I’ve worn out 2 pair and my third, I’m going to see how long they last. I gave them a real workout this past Summer. I started wearing them in March and just put them away the end of October. The bottoms are pretty worn out. Perfect for my feet and walking in the summer.

Relieve me of the bondage of self,

Barbara AHMOD - It's still one of the best things about Corey, the ability not just to see what I like or don't like, but to remember it. I usually let him make a plate for me because he is honestly better at deciding how much I can eat than I am. You married the right guy, my friend.
Allie - I'm glad you could be there for your friend who fell, as well as for Evan's family. You're that "friend in need" for your community and your family.
Partly sunny day, still a bit too chilly to start the work outside, so we'll drive up to the grocery store in town. Corey will finally get to drive my new (to me) Kicks for the first time! We just need to get some veggies for the week, including some fresh carrots and apples for his lunches. The carrots did not produce in his garden, one of the few things he planted that didn't grow. Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers all grew like gangbusters - he just pulled the last of the peppers last weekend, and the last of the tomatoes will be brought in today, I think.
Finished with Christmas except for the gift card that I'm going to get and wrap for my oldest grandson. Which reminds me... when I'm finished with this, I need to send a text to all and sundry to let them know I've sent them a package, so they can look out for them. Apparently "porch pirates" are becoming more and more common!
Hope it's a grand weekend for all, Corey's just getting out of the shower, time to get moving!
Love y'all,

And Today Is: Lots of fun things today besides Veterans Day: Origami (think I will try this!), Sundae’s (a no-no for me!), trees, energy saving, and shopping day! More in the spoiler.2
-
Kylia-do you use toe stops for your shoe? My right foot is about 1/2 size smaller than my left so that isn't too bad but I think I am going to try one to keep foot from sliding.
Allie-sounds like a very nice food order you have for them. I am sure they will appreciate it.
Lanette-I use 2 lb weights around house and take them on outside walk occasionally. Need to do that more.
Got a nice 4 mile walk in, talked with son for part of it. Got to thank him for his service.
Happy Veteran's Day to those of you who served and/or have family who did/do.

Good Saturday,
Happy Veterans Day to our Veterans!
Finished up the laundry this morning. Didn't get done on Wednesday since was in Detroit. Speaking of laundry....I had a Maytag Neptune front load for 20 years. Never had a mold/musty smell. I now have a front load. I believe that detergents and additives are more the culprit than the machine types. They leave so much residue. I dry the door off and leave cracked open for a day or so, but then close it. When we go on extended vacations I leave it open, but did the same thing with our really old top load. This one does have a built in wash cycle, so every 100 loads a cup of bleach in the cycle, and off you go again. I have used Norwex laundry soap for years. My clothes seem to hold up better and no scents!
Allie So sorry for your troubles. I am glad that you are there to help as needed. That is a blessing.
My DH is happier when I sit with him in the man cave in the evenings. We have been watching reruns of Hawaii 5o and two and a half men. I did manage to get some work paperwork done. He has been considerate enough to let me have some no noise time before I join him most of the time.
I hit 10k steps again last night, but laundry kept me up a bit later than I should have let it. 🙃 I did a quick pickup of misc items from around the house. I have a desk drawer and a darn pile of papers to deal with again. Maybe Sunday evening......
Dawn is breaking. The sliver of the moon was shining. And I believe I could see a planet beside the moon ( could have been a star)
On the same line as any exercise is good if you do it. I used that for my magnesium. I had bought capsules but they were huge! After getting one lodged in throat, I was struggling to take any more. I threw them away and got gummy ones. Those I will eat. My throat was tender for a week after the lodging. Part of my mind was saying what a waste of money, but it did no good if I wouldn't take it.
Rita You have got this.....if you had 5 bags yesterday, only 4 today! My DH loves to feed me especially dark chocolate! I try to remember that when eating.
Rebecca I channeled you yesterday when prepping my lunch. Needed protein, so black beans, added spinach for vegetable, brown rice and quinoa, a little salsa for sone flavor, and a pat of butter. It kept me full all afternoon and was pretty.
Thank you for shoe suggestions. My left is a 7.5. Mybright is 6.5. My toes are really long. Arches never hit right. May need to look into personalized insoles.....
Need to go walk.
Much love to you all!
Hugs especially tight for those with illness or other troubles!
Congratulations on the NSVs and weight losses!
Welcomes!

Its kinda fun to cook instinctively, just putting in what you like, let them (like food is a them😂) get merry in a pan with a pat of good butter or olive oil. Each time I make foods this way, I might add something different, so its always a nice surprise. My spider senses were tingling, it must have been you🤗💖👍🏼!

Our little cat passed away peacefully at home yesterday after a hard week or so. Have been okay and getting spiritual insights about It All and doing my best to stay healthy and well.
If anyone wants to friend me for mutual support, please do. This is a lovely group here,
thanks and best wishes8 -
@laughingdakini1 I'm so sorry about the loss of your cat. Please don't be disappointed if you don't receive a lot of friend requests from the folks on this thread--many of us (not all, but many) tend to keep our communications limited to the thread itself. It's a long-standing communication link that is renewed and re-linked each month with a clean slate. I'm glad you are doing your best to stay healthy and well. Please do feel free to drop into any conversations that suit you, you'll be welcome.
Regards,

@laughingdakini1 Sorry for the loss of your fur baby.
Something had to give this morning. Opted to get in hot tub and put off walk. I am at 6k with just work. I did get my pile of paperwork cleared from my desk before work. Yay!
Headed to farm but wanted to share my Christmas cactus. Don't know why but they always bloom when I bring them in after summer.
Hugs!

Laughingdakini1 so sorry to hear about your cat.

Barbara ~ What a good husband you have! Taking you into the book store to purchase the dark chocolate you love was a wonderful gesture.
Allie ~ You are one of the most thoughtful and giving persons I have ever known. You go way out of your way to be there for your family and friends. I know that when you first went through your divorce, you were very worried about the money; but, you seem to spend freely for everyone now and you are a blessing.
Laughingdakini1 ~ So sorry about your cat's passing. It is so hard to lose one of our pets who are a part of our family. Please help us by ending your posts with a name we can easily remember and a general location.
Kylia ~ Beautiful cactus rose!
Heather ~ Enjoy your company.

Laughingdakini1-soory to hear of your cat's passing. Several of the ladies in the group have had their fur babies pass on, so they understand the pain.
Lisa-a bit jealous your Christmas shopping is done. Az kids sending me list. Will have a couple of small things for them to open when here next month (coming to see new baby!) and will ship some to their house for Christmas morning, Adult children may just get money. I am also paying for hotel for the wee they are here. Step kids will get money and grandsons will either send me list or gift cards (they are actually getting into them).
Kylia-enjoy the trip at the farm. Nice cactus.
Allie-you had a very stressful day yesterday. You didn't sleep overly well last night. You said your digestive system wasn't good earlier today. You got your RSV vaccine today. Not surprised that the combination has you feeling wiped out. Maybe just eat some crackers with peanut butter or some such if you don't feel like cooking just so you have something in your stomach,
Working my way down my list for the day. Need to get kitchen together. Made crock pot of turkey chili today. Dishwasher finished so I can put stuff away and fill it back up. Want to get everything in good shape. DIL is scheduled to be induced next Friday!
Take care all,

Today I made keto no sugar chocolate cupcakes, with low sugar chocolate frosting. They were really moist, and husband liked them.
Today is middle sons birthday, Athena's daddy. I hope he had a good day. I had brought down cookies so he already got my card and gift of those. Never know what to buy that kid.😁
Last night my Guam sailor asked if we'd buy a scooter part as he was having problems with the company liking his Guam debit card. It was $165 and son had it deposited in our account, before husband even got done ordering it. Technology amazes me sometimes. It is small so when we get it, I will add it to his Christmas box.😁. Putting brownies in as filler. Husband laughed saying only you would put brownies as packing material for a scooter part!

It's a pity all I can find on this are videos. I rarely watch videos on my computer and prefer to read an article because reading is much quicker, less time consuming.
Ah, this summary has a transcript.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TImU-RXalCA&ab_channel=PodcastSummaries
"Kenny recommends increasing physical activity each year rather than decreasing it she also advises against excessive sitting and emphasizes the importance of regular movement for maintaining overall Health and Longevity"
Absolutely!! Get up and move!
And of course, she lists the usual:
Exercise (as above)
Good Diet & smaller quantities
Quality Sleep
Social Activities
Reducing Stress.

So sorry about your cat.0 -
My Christmas shopping is pretty much done. I don't do much at all.
I will pick up a few bits and pieces over the next month. I usually like to get us a new ornament each year ... it's fun to browse among the choices in the stores to see what's new. I usually look for something related to a bicycle, cat or bee. And I might pick up another string of white lights ... the new ones in our patio area aren't very bright. Then maybe a couple gift cards and I'll be done!!

Went to Michaels because they had yarn on sale, b1 g1 50% off. I usually don’t like those kinds of sales, but I know that it won’t go any lower. Plus, I had a 25% off coupon. Then went to Kohls and got this reusable cup for the Keurig for Colby, these fire pit tools (last time we were at Jess’ they used a piece of wood to stir the embers in their firepit), and this Halloween thing that Vince doesn’t like. However, I didn’t realize that I had a $10 off coupon but I need to go back tonight since the coupon is only good for yesterday and today (I called and even with the receipt, I can’t bring it in tomorrow). So for $10 and to return the thing that Vince doesn’t like, I’ll go back after church tonight. Lector tonight.
Laughingdakini – I’m so very sorry about your loss. Our furbabies mean so much to us. Don’t be hurt if few people (or any) from here friend you. Most everyone just comes to this forum to be friends and for support. Join us! We’re always looking for more friends
Looks like its too late to go for my walk and it’ll be too dark by the time I get home from church. Have I told you all lately how much I hate this getting dark early stuff?????
Rebecca – brownies sound like good packing material to me. Like popcorn.
Listening to TSO on Sirius XM right now. It’s interesting because they tell more of the story than you get on the CD.
Painted the arms on my California Raisin bisque because I could since I have the black paint at home. Also made one of the towel toppers. Next I want to finish making up the bed in the back bedroom and get the christmas presents I have already bought for people down from the shelf in the closet to see what more I have to buy.
Went to Kohl’s for the coupon only the item isn’t included in the sale. Kohl’s does this a lot, gives coupons or marks things down and in little tiny print they list all the exclusions, and there are a lot of them. Oh well, I returned the item that Vince didn’t like. Going to go to WalMart tomorrow and I’ll buy gas.
Since no work the plan is to do the Abs Diet Workout DVD. Haven’t done that one in a long, long time. I’ll see how it is – maybe it’ll get donated.

Ginny - I'm not sure my impatience with Christmas shopping is always received well, but the best thing about being this age and pretty much the only grandma in sight, is I just tell them that's the way it is. However, even after threatening him with Kleenex as a Christmas gift, I absolutely could NOT get my oldest grandson to give me an idea of what he wanted, so I've gone back to finishing the afghan that I started for him a couple years ago. I should be able to get it done in time to get it out to him by December 1st. I wonder if I can find a Kleenex box big enough to put it in?
The first two wall section studs are up on the sunroom, and I only had to bandage up one ricochet from the nail gun, because it hit a knot in the board and hit the edge of one of Corey's fingers. He's relaxing with a good book in the bathtub, and I'm watching Netflix. I gave in and got a month of it so we can watch the Great British Baking Show. The final should be shown here on December 1, so no spoilers!
Time to get back to my crochet... I've got a deadline!
Love y'all,

Jake loves his new washer and dryer. It seems as though he does a load of laundry every day thus giving me something to fold and put away. We are using the same laundry detergent we used before but the laundry smells better in the new machines. We think the old set was the original machines from when the house was first sold as a manufactured house in 1983. No wonder the new ones are so much better.

This morning, we went to a meeting of our bee club. First time in a little while! It was a short get together this time, but we did find out that we may be getting a small swarm of bees later this week.
We think a small swarm has moved into one of our hives, so this new one would go into the other hive. But we will need to have a look at our hives to see what is actually going on!
Me and our hives ... from last season.
