One of the things I've done in this last month is re-enter the world of Facebook, but this time, I went there with an open heart, and it's been really good for me. I didn't leave all the barriers up, although I did put a lot of stringent privacy settings in place, but I put out friend requests to all my family, even the sketchy ones, and quite a few people here that I knew were on FB, as well. It makes me happy to go there, now. I needed to step away a few years back, but it was time to re-open myself, to learn about their lives again (using that word of the year "learn," )

I don't have it on my phone, and don't plan to, just on my computer, so I can control my time on it. I learned a long time ago what a time-suck FB can become if you allow it.

    Love y'all,
    Lisa in AR

I use FB as a tool. Fortunately it has enough different settings and ways to look at things that I can narrow or widen my focus.

For example, I use it to find out what the state, local councils, or Tas Rail are up to in the way of road construction for our cycling events.

I catch a little bit of the news on FB.
I can glance through what friends and family are posting.
I can see coming events from certain places.
I read articles that sites like Nature (https://www.nature.com/news), Very Well (https://www.verywellhealth.com/) and Becoming UnBusy (https://becomingunbusy.com/) post.
And I can have fun with it by sharing cat memes and cartoons.

Speaking of Becoming UnBusy, they've got articles about being neurobusy which I found interesting.

100 UNEXPECTED SIGNS YOU MIGHT BE NEUROBUSY
    https://becomingunbusy.com/neurobusy-symptoms/

    https://becomingunbusy.com/what-is-neurobusy/
    SNAPSHOT: WHAT NEUROBUSY IS
Neurobusy is a common condition whose root causes include overwhelm, anxiety, neurodiversity, and trauma. Neurobusy people feel a deep need to always be moving or productive — making true rest or peace impossible.

What does it mean when a person shows about 95 of the 100 signs they might be neurobusy??

Did part of the Dressed Up Drills DVD then went to work at BK. The sign said they opened at 7. No one told me that they weren’t opening until 9. So I sat in my car for 2 hours. What I should have done is called the store manager and told her that I was in the parking lot, the sign says they are opened, but there’s no one there. To me, if you advertise that you are open, even if you don’t have any business, you should be open. They did ask if I could work Wed but I told her that I hate to commit since I don’t know how I’ll feel. Honestly, I probably can do it, but just to be sure….

I, also, am so very grateful to have you all in my life. I’ve gotten so many different perspectives, good ideas. Just wish I was better with my words, but love you all the same

Kylia – I have a book calendar from many years ago (before Jessica was born, when I was working) where I write down all the birthdays so can look at it each month

One other thing that I don’t know if the store manager at BK is aware of, a couple times I’ve seen Jerry sleeping in the dining room. Honestly, if I was a customer and I saw a homeless person sleeping there, I wouldn’t want to go back. I think he just doesn’t think of sleeping in the backroom. I think maybe I’ll mention it to her.

KJ – we had a similar situation with a pothole. There was a BIG sign that told you that the city road ended, and this was right before the pothole or I should say potholes. I don’t know who did it, but eventually it got repaired. I especially like the pic of the shark coming out of the water

Lisa – I only have FB on me desktop, too. At one time I had it on my tablet and I kept getting all these notices that someone posted that I just took it off.

Carol – I would have black eyed peas for New years but I’d be the only one who would eat them. For green we’ll have a salad, I may have green beans tool. Going to make pork chops so we’ll have our pork

Margaret – “create health rather than fighting disease.” How appropriate for you!

NJMon – welcome! Where in NJ are you? I grew up in NJ. Still miss those Jersey tomatoes

I usually have a bran muffin or something similar along with 26oz of water first thing in the morning because I don’t like exercising on an empty stomach. Speaking of exercise...I need to take my walk. Update: just got back from Food Lion where I got Vince bananas. They are the same price here as in WalMart and I think only a penny or two more than Aldi

Barbara – I’ve never gone to this specialist before, but I’m sure that I have to be there at 6:45 so I can fill out paperwork where one of the questions will be about bone drugs. I’m betting that the office doesn’t open until 7. Yup, I think the people at BK are doing the “penny wise and dollar foolish” thing. But...fortunately, not my business.

Kylia – thanks so much for the idea of having shrimp for breakfast! I do have shrimp that I want to finish up, so that’ll make a good breakfast. Along with the green beans that I want to finish up. Yup, I know that some of my breakfasts are pretty weird.

Debbie – going to the bathroom...look at it this way...you’re getting your steps in and thereby burning calories. OK, probably not a whole lot. But at least a few, so there is a silver lining

really – welcome! This is a great place for support in this struggle, but it CAN be done.

Lisa – oh no, cushions, backs, etc. missing. How frustrating!

Rosemarie – you have my utmost respect for just doing things on your own

Worked some on the scarf for the gal at work. Took a shower now off to bed.

    Nite everyone

    On Physical Health

I drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, before I leave for work, and have done for many years. Pretty much since I discovered I had kidney stones.

I refrain from drinking my calories as much as possible.

I also take a small collection of vitamins in the evening. I have tried various ones over the years and have dropped the ones that really don't seem to make a difference.

My diet can be described as "leaning toward being vegetarian". Lots of fruit and vegetables, grains, seeds etc. Some dairy. Minimal meat.

I don't consume a lot of added sugar except for my after dinner deserts. 😀 Those are usually a couple ice cream bars.

I exercise as much as I can but want to increase the amount I exercise this year. Our home gym helps. The stairs at work help. And getting outside to walk (maybe run again) and cycle are my favourite ways to exercise.

I also want to work on going to bed a few minutes earlier during the week.

(Interestingly, the Wellness Wheel is about various aspects of mental health ... just one item on the Wheel is about physical health)

Machka My thinking on the reason there are more mental spokes is because if those aren't being addressed the physical isn't going to happen. You do a great job of balancing them all. It is inspiring!

    Love y'all,
Kylia in Ohio trying to take advantage of new year, new month, day off work to set up success

That's true. I have to be in the right place mentally before I feel I can pay attention to my physical health.

    (thinking more ...)

    On Physical Health

Physical health also includes keeping up with medical appointments. This is one area I've discovered my parents have let slide as they've gotten older to the point where my mother didn't want to be checked by a doctor.

Research has been discovering that what might seem like little things (hearing loss, dental issues) can have huge negative effects on us as we get older.

Oh, I wanted to add a comment about the ice cream bars. I used to get ice cream in a 2 litre container, and it is less expensive that way, but it is really easy to scoop a nice hefty sized bowl of ice cream. Whereas, limiting myself to 2 ice cream bars limits my intake.

A question for you all ... what foods do you eat that have added sugar?

I see people talking about reducing their added sugar intake, and I wonder what is being eaten that would have added sugar.

I eat fruit, which has natural sugar.
I eat those ice cream bars which are sugar (and I know that).
    I eat raw honey occasionally.
And Nutella on one slice of bread for breakfast one (or two) days on the weekend. I know Nutella isn't great, but I like it once a week.

Allie: I intended to go for a walk today but stated up until 11:30 and just this was enough to make me tired this afternoon
so I have spent much of the afternoon in bed!

Happy New Year to everyone! My word...and I stole it from someone here who used in a previous year is Balance. Balancing exercise with decluttering, social life with decluttering and cooking with getting some take out so I am not always cleaning the kitchen by myself.

Thank you all for your support last year!

My son believes I am moving too fast, looking at a car and a couch. It kind of brought me down this afternoon and I was already tired from reading about hybrids/electric cars until 11:30 last night. I have had a couple of Honda Accords since 1997 and have had the same interior. I am real tired of it....what is that 25 years. I bought the couch I had in the living room after 9/11 so maybe in 2002....what is that 21 years. I put it in the family room...I didn't throw it out.

I have the money for a 2018 to 2020 regular car or hybrid because we (basically I) sold the disability van...and that was months ago. I am really irked...truth be told. I have to hire a handy man because of things he didn't do while he was here for 5 days.

It is lonely but I will just buy the couch and the car on my own. Maybe I will meet somebody, I wasn't going to date but this kind of thing does lead you back to it. I wonder what 2024 will bring!

And I think I will stop paying their way for things. We can do less together. They can come and visit and if we do something we can all pitch in together.

You know what kills me, they asked if I wanted their couch...it is about 5 years old and they want to replace it for a new
"vibe". My current car is a 2007 Accord, that I acquired in 2012, because my previous car was a standard and I wanted him to learn to drive on an automatic. My current car has 170k miles on it and my previous car had 190k. I guess I would like a new "vibe".

Well you all have children so I know I am speaking to the choir!

Go Michigan! I am about to turn it on!

    Best,
    Rosemarie from Georgia

    You do you!

When my first husband and I separated, one of the first things I did was to get rid of the old, old hand-me-down furniture we had and I got a sofa I loved and which I still have about 24 years later!!

I did it all on my own because it was so nice to be able to go into a furniture shop and select something I wanted rather than dragging "mr. reluctant" around with me and then having to settle for his family's cast-offs.

If I were in a position to redecorate my current place or a new place without my current husband, I think I would prefer to do it alone again. After all, it would be me living there and I would want to love my choices.

But if I did want to bring someone along to share the excitement and get opinions, etc. I think I'd want to bring a female friend.

I've found that men are much more utilitarian about furniture. It's a sofa. It's got a firm seat, high back, wide arms, and a non-offensive colour. Perfect! It'll do. (Or worse ... "I know someone who has had a sofa sitting in their garage for the last 16 years. I'm sure they'll let us have it. It's perfectly good ... well, except that the dog used the back leg as a chew toy, but we can shore it up with a couple bricks". It'll save us tons of money.)

Whereas I might want those things, but I might also admire the curve of the arms, the shade of the colour, and other details.

Do you have a female friend who might come shopping with you?

Hubby and I are celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary today. We are at a beautiful place about 30 minutes from our house. Not far, but so nice and quiet. Just good to get away for a night. They still have the lights up from Christmas. We've walked the path twice tonight.

    2024 Goals

My 2024 goals are a continuation of my past goals based on my ToDo list and my 50Things list with reference to a Wellness Wheel.

Upcoming Appointments - these are at the top of my list. The things I need to deal with in the next few weeks.

Intellectual/Occupational/Financial or Education/Career: Advancing my career. Moving from adequate to proficient at SQL, brushing up on cost accounting and learning clinical costing, learning Python and data analysis software.
Also, I want to have a closer look at our financial situation to see where we can save money and to make sure we're on top of things.

The goal is to expand my skillset and to improve our financial situation.

Medical: my husband's appointments, which I also need to attend because I'm his ears and cognition and my appointments now that I've been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease.
I also want to create medical record binders (and on the computer) for both of us, in case something happens.

The goal is to keep us as healthy as we can be and to ensure we have information at our fingertips.

Fitness/Sports > Cycling > Audax Tasmania: There are a number of fitness/sport things I'd like to try, with a focus on cycling, and a large part of my cycling endeavours includes my volunteer work with Audax Tasmania ... and maybe even riding some events again myself!
On my 50Things list I have all sorts of things like learning to swim, riding a horse for the first time, trying archery, learning to dance. Maybe this might be the year to try a bit of that.

The goal it to improve my fitness level.

House > Office > Computer become more specific as they go along. I have a number of thing which need to be done in the house (kitchen, dining room, etc.) but most importantly the home office needs a whole lot of work. And along with that I need to organise the drives on my computer into a better filing system.

The goal is to have an organised and decluttered house and computer system.
The goal is also to ensure all paperwork is up to date and accessible by both of us.

Garden: I have several projects I would like to do this year. One of the main ones is to finish the border around my dry stream and bulb garden. :)

The goal is to have a pleasant, creative, relaxing and functional area outside for reading, exercise and socialising.

Spiritual: Continue to read the Bible every day. And attend church a little bit more often -we've got some plans in this regard.

The goal is to learn, relearn, revitalise.

Emotional/Social/Recreation: More creativity, relaxation, connections. I have all sorts of things on my 50Things list like doing more with my photography, playing the piano again, working on my website and more.

The goal is balance. Doing a variety of things that aren't just work and education.

But first, I need to recover from COVID.

    Good Tuesday!
Off to a good start. 16 oz water in, Bible read, 24 mins walking, am in hot tub!

Machka most processed foods have added sugars. Most restaurants and fast foods have added sugar. Just like salt it is designed to make things taste better so we go back for more. Things we grew up on chefboyrdee, hamburger helper, etc all have lots of added sugars. It is those hidden ones that are harder to control. I buy little processed foods and read labels on those I do buy. A lot of "healthy" foods have sugar and salt added. Different note, I relate shopping with my DH along the same lines as hunting with a game warden. You aren't doing anything wrong, yet always feel judged.

Flea Happy anniversary! I am happy that you had a good time.

Simone Welcome! We were all newcomers at some point. Drop in often as this is not a static group!

Michele I have all the important dates in my calendar. The problem is getting it from my head to the person. I am working on the execution of the actions.

Time for work. Will have to make my own sunshine today!

    Hugs!
    Healing thoughts!
    Lots of encouragement!

    <3
    Kylia in Grey again Ohio

I grew up on similar foods to what I eat now ... fruit, vegetables, whole grains but also a lot of meat. My mother was a nurse and didn't go in for a lot of processed stuff because she didn't think it was healthy. I don't think I have ever had hamburger helper and don't recall eating chef boyardee until I was into my 20s, and not a lot then. I didn't like it ... too sweet.

I don't like most canned food because it is too sweet. Although I will go for a few soups.

My parents would get a side of beef from a farmer (often someone they knew) each year and that's what we would have with veggies as a side.

Now I eat veggies as the main and a little pasta or small bit of meat or something as the side. I'm actually a fan of plain boiled pasta with a bit of butter and cheese, and veggies.

(What is or was hamburger helper? Was it a seasoning packet for the hamburger?)

:)Rosemarie, I love the suggestion that you shop with a woman friend and ignore what your kids are saying. My suggestion is that you be sure that you're not just buying something to make yourself feel better and thus avoid the decision fatigue of getting rid of things you don't need. Also don't make a big change to hybrid or electric until you've take the time to learn more and make sure it's the right decision. If you have a lot of furniture you don't like, get rid of it first and then buy the couch you want.

:)Machka, Thank you for all the food for thought that you share.

Wow! It is WINDY here! Really WINDY!
Waitrose has been delayed an hour. They actually rang me to tell me.

It was chaotic this morning because Max turned up with the girls. At nearly 13, his main project in life is to wind them up, and vice versa! :p I managed to put a lid on it, but it does make the day less pleasurable.
Bea and I did an idea from Instagram, using paint fingerprints, and then decorating them. It was harder than it sounds! Hers actually came out better than mine because I used a couple of darker paints, and you couldn't see the pen work on top. We made a horrible mess of Edie's paint box, so I now have to clean it up.

Lunch went well and they all ate a lot. Edie insists on having a side salad, and she always makes a French dressing.
I was exhausted when they left, but it was very satisfying.

    Later

Waitrose have just been and all is put away. I'm going to see if I can catch up with G, or L , or both. I've had a short nap.

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

So... talked to the Home Depot folks, and they of course, put me on to their vendor (which I fully expected). Vendor isn't answering phone, of course, "leave a message with email, phone number, first-born child's exact moment of birth, down to the second, your cat's psychiatric evaluation results, and what the problem is that you're calling about, if you can remember that by the time you've given us all the other information." Mildly exaggerated, but still...

Anyway, called them three times, just to get the message each time, and went out to look at the boxes and see if there was another number. There I found, not only another number but a couple absolutely hilarious things. Start at the very bottom line in the image, and read the customer service hours. If you're on the Pacific Coast, customer service is between 6 p.m. and midnight - but by the time you get to the East Coast, you have only the three hours between 9 p.m. and midnight, so you better be quick! Then the phrasing at the top... "Having trouble assembling? Missing parts?" So... I'm thinking this has happened before. 👀🙄🙃
    6e0zanrpeufq.jpg

I'll call them at 8 p.m. CST and see what happens, unless they call me first.

    Later, y'all,
    Love,
    Lisa

I phoned both G and L. G was just leaving the hospital pharmacy with oral steroids etc. They have taken photos and bloods. Results next week. She is relieved to have arrived in the right place at last, but worried about what her problem is.

L was OK. She is going on a yoga retreat in Morocco in three weeks time.

I did cook the halloumi curry. It has turned out to be one of our favourite things.

    Hair trim tomorrow.

My son's New Year resolution is to give up his nicotine tablets that he has been taking for years and years since he gave up smoking. He is finding it HARD. Says he is very tired. :*

Will keep on keeping on. It will get done. Did I ever say, "I hate forms!" :o
