WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2024

Introduction for the new ladies/update for my longtime MFP crew: My name is Kelly (or KJ), I live in Grand Haven, Michigan, I am 57 years old, married for going on 35 years, three children DOS, my stepson (37), DD, and mother to my three grandsons (34), and DYS (30). 5'7 1/2" and 260lbs. I was relatively thin my entire life and very bookish (non-athletic person) so ZERO physical fitness routine was ever established. I began perimenopause at 40. And the weight started sticking. I enjoyed a brief stint of running between the ages of 47 and 49. Had my first knee injury, followed by an ankle injury and that ended my running career. I am the sole contributor to our household finances, as my DH has retired due to RA and other chronic pain/health issues, and is now working as my assistant in my in home childcare (12 kids each day). I am currently dealing with plantar fasciitis. It is the pits.
Goals/or resolutions:
I resolve to make better choices for myself this year. I lost five pounds in December. Not much; but considering it is a holiday month, when I usually gain, I will take it! I am currently doing 10 minutes of yoga each morning and a bit of wall stretches to work on building muscle and stretching out the tendon on my foot. As soon as I can walk without pain, I will add walking. I also resolve only work 60 hours each week. I know that sounds like a lot, but I have children with me 50 hours a week; so that gives me 10 hours for cleaning, activity prep, and paperwork. I resolve to take advantage of the other "free" hours to rest, relax, or try something new just for me.
Kids are hear and playing loudly. My time here is up for the day! ttfn xoxoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Lanette the other reason mouth breathing helps is you get more nitrous oxide in your system (think laughing gas) in addition to filtering out more germs and other unwanted things in the air.
First day of new Vitamins. The daily and Vitamin C are on the large side. I just remember the trick of keeping your chin tuck down towards your chest to help you swallow.
I watched a video on how to use breathing aids. They do suggest to start out slow and build to a max of 12 hours a day. Once I get to 8-10 I will use at night. I have more problems breathing through my nose at night. Turns out my dentist has a similar product and does have mouth tape to help you breathe through your nose at night. It is much better for your teeth to if you can master it.
Today I am going to make a list of my self care needs and make sure I do them daily. Some seem like no- brainers. I get so busy with all the other things that are on my plate it is easy for me to skip things without a check list... examples will include drinking at least 3 16 oz of lemon water a day. Brush teeth in the morning. Check blood pressure daily. Sit quietly 5 min, stretch legs out morning, afternoon, night, and if on feet or sitting for longer than 30 min.
Making better choice in eating is getting easier...Agree with Dr. Matt on how to shop the grocery store. It makes it so much easier to eat better if you have better food in your home.
I had better success with my almond flour pancakes today!
Off to make my list...3 -
Simone I taught Kindergarten years ago. Yes they can be a peppy bunch. When you first start student teaching clear your schedule of anything that is non-essential. This is also true when you start teaching at the beginning of a school year.
This is how I am treating this period of my life right now. This is why I am also prioritizing self care.
Hope student teaching goes well for you!4 -

On nose vs mouth breathing ... for most of my life I could breathe through my nose as long as I was inactive (sitting doing school work or whatever) but as soon as I became active (running around the school yard at recess, etc.) I breathed through my mouth.
As I got older and got into cycling, people kept telling me to breathe through my nose while cycling and being active. But I couldn't ... and I couldn't figure out what they were talking about because it was impossible to breathe through my nose while being active and I assumed it was impossible for everyone.
Then in 2020, I had my badly deviated septum corrected and discovered that I could breathe through my nose at last!!
Oddly, MRIs of my head and X-rays of my sinuses and all sorts over the years found nothing. It wasn't until I saw an ENT specialist that the deviated septum I likely had since birth or early childhood was discovered.
So if you are having difficulty breathing through your nose it can be worth getting it checked by a specialist.
It's also made a world of difference during this time of having COVID. Before the surgery I would have been near drowning like I was during every single cold I have had since I can remember. Now, whilst my sinuses are pumping out record quantities of mucus, I am able to get rid of it and not have it block me up and nearly drown me.

Morning ladies, was awake and out the door and to Walmart by 7:15 and out of there by 9.
But didn't sleep well..so im beat now..3 -
Lanette-Yes, that's me next to the cactus. That day was cold and rainy; one of the 2 we had when traveling. As for the pain, I have not yet had a surgery, fortunately.
As for the crowds, I'm a super introvert and am uncomfortable around big crowds. I had to use the "serenity now" mantra to get through the first parts of the trails in Sedona. The first trail we tried was so popular they closed the parking at the trailhead and you can only get there by shuttle. This is to get to the top of the mountain that is in every magazine or all over social media that shows photos of Sedona. All of the parking at the shuttle pickup was full by 9am and the shuttles had long waits. We found a separate and longer trail to get to the same point (but with much better views of it) and there were very few people on it. It was a much nicer way to get there, but the top was insanely crowded, so we just kept walking past it. We ended up with a 6.5 mile hike that day.
Karen VA-Nice to see you!
Lisa-So nice you get to spend time with your daughter.
Debbie-I am not giving up. I also think it's more in my back (alignment). On my checklist is to find a new chiropractor. The only time I felt better was after a chiro visit. My other one retired and it's been a struggle finding a new one.
Also on my checklist is to find a new yoga studio. Also a struggle because they are expensive here and taking classes like that are out of my comfort zone. So, there are two barriers for me. But I think yoga will help physically and mentally.
Congrats Vicki and Rita for 17 years and 5 months respectively!
Finally weighed myself yesterday. *sigh* I have some work to do.

Annie-As Sue said...horses can be calming. They use them for therapy animals for children and adults these days.
Sue-Sorry about your tenant issues. That's the "job" I have and have ever had that I hate most...landlord.
Rosemarie-I don't envy you shopping for a new car. That is something I hope I never have to do again. But I also understand the need for change.
Simone-It's great your husband is doing this with you! Mine has also decided to make some changes, which makes it easier for me.
Barbara-My gyn is a man and I'm currently trying to find a new one who has been through menopause. My GP is a woman and she encourages me to go to specialists, but every time I've gone to one, I've been poked and prodded or took prescriptions on their advice to no avail whatsoever. So, I think I'm better off figuring this out on my own for the time being. I think I need to narrow it down to which type of specialist and then go to one. For example, I went to a podiatrist and he immediately diagnosed plantar fasciitis, really without listening to me holistically. Then I took steroids, which did nothing. Then he wanted to stab me with needles to insert steroids in BOTH feet. Well, unless he can prove without a doubt that will help, no thanks. I am 100% certain this is not plantar fasciitis.
Debbie and Machka-Glad to hear you're both feeling better.

Quick Intro-I am 54 and live in southern California. Moved here from the midwest when I was 20. I'm tired of it, but am not in a position to move at the moment. I have no children. I love to travel and that is my financial priority. I read a lot. I exercise most every day which includes weight lifting as well as cardio. The whole menopause process added some weight and I've been struggling to get rid of it for the past year. I hate clothes shopping, so I just want to be able to wear them and not get a new wardrobe. And of course, clothes are not cheap. I work as a writer and editor and have worked from home for the past 10 years. I don't think I can ever return to an office.
Welcome to the new peeps.

Brief introduction for me.
I just turned 63 and am married with three children and five step children who have five grandchildren. I work in higher education administration and teach literature and humanities as part of my load.
I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer denovo in June 2021. I've had chemo, mastectomy, and radiation and currently, my cancer is not progressing. I am on all kinds of medication to keep my cancer at bay. My youngest is 17, and is a junior in highschool. My first goal is to live to see him graduate from highschool. My second goal is to live to retirement, about two years now. I live from scan to scan, every six months, so goals can change.
I am not supposed to actively try to lose weight, even though I would be more comfortable 20 pounds lighter, so I just try to eat as well as I can. For exercise, I walk, row, and do some strength. Because the cancer metastasized to my bone, I do have to be careful.
I also have celiac and ckd, so when I'm not feeling well, I have to run through my chronic conditions to figure out what is going on.
I am a survivor and I can't imagine my life other than it is. I am thankful every day and love the women on this group. I am pretty busy working full time, managing my health, and raising an active teenager, so I don't post every day, but I do read.
Welcome to all the new ladies.

Tina: I hope you can get to the bottom of the source of your pain! I've Sedona once. It was fun!
Kay and Ladycop..Welcome
Debbie: Your eggroll in a bowl sounds delicious!
Tracey: I hope your next class is better than you are expecting it to be!
Michele: I hope your friend gets through surgery okay
Machka: Two friends and I went to a hotel liquidator furniture store yesterday. One friend purchased a couch for 199 dollars plus delivery. Then we went to an antique mall and I purchased 2 prints to freshen up the down stairs bathroom.
It was fun! I would ride the horse this year because it does take some agility to get on a horse! It took me about a month after COVID to get my energy back. For some people, it is much longer.
Annette: Welcome
Margaret Turk: Seems like your caregiver responsibilities are increasing. Eventually I cut my husband's hair. I did pretty well with doing this!
Grandmallie: I might be boring my son! I like to banter and chat so I might look for a Facebook group for those buying new cars.
Rebecca: Your family is on the move. I hope your son's like Japan and that your other son gets. a great job!
Kate: My sympathy on the loss of your husband.
Barbara: I decided there was a leather couch in the family room so I would get a cloth couch for the living room.
I want pale yellow. I have a child gate to keep pets out of the room.
Jen: Hope you get this job where you are going for a final interview!
Ginny: Enjoy your pedicure. The last book my husband gave me was about comparing centering in pottery to centering ourselves.
Flea: Happy Anniversary
Simone: Welcome
Heather: Wow! Those waves are pretty scary! We made chicken curry...our first time over the Christmas holidays and used cream. For myself I
might switch to milk. On The Declutter Day, I have my son's old room Which has become a storage room. I cleaned much of it this week and hope to finish on Declutter Day!
Barbie: Yes, I have car dealers calling me now! I will wait a few months. I need to start taking notes about which cars have which safety features. Safety features are important to me. Also have I posted that I have had two Honda Accords since 1997 both with the same interior. I am so tired of the car's interior. I need a change!
Good day today! I went to the cat rescue in the morning! Ran some errands...And then decided to have my car detailed. The young gentleman came to my house with a little trailer of equipment and steam cleaned the carpet . He worked on the car for 2.5 hours. Meanwhile I sat on the couch and read the news! I ignored all the chores of the house completely!
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia
came out very well. We did use cream. If I made it for myself, I might switch to milk.
Yes crossing my fingers for middle son getting ha job soon.💖👍🏼 My two sailors have been to Japan before, the youngest was in Sasebo Japan, and eldest squadron was in Atsugi Japan for a time. Both love pretty much everything Japanese. Both can't wait to live off the delicious 7-11 foods. Unlike here, the 7-11's there sell quite nutritious foods.💖

lisa--I am excited for you and the visit with your daughter.
A little about me: I am 67 years old and work full-time in the communacation center of a hospital. I have been here going on 38 years and been supervisor of my dept for 8 years. I have 9 people that work for me and it is a 24/7 dept. Right now we are talking of retiring when I have my 40 years in and out of debt. I am married 39 years with 7 children between us and 36 grandchildren and great grandchildren with another boy due in April. I have been over weight my whole life and have lost just over 124 pounds since my highest. My goal this year is to move more and log every bite. I love this group and all the ladies here.

Going to Zumba class was TOTALLY out of my comfort zone when I started. I had never done anything like it but my friend asked me to go with her. I am still going and enjoying it so much. Friend quit a few years ago, trying other groups/activities but doing nothing now. I have been doing this for 4-5 yrs now.
I miss it if we don't have class or I have to miss one. It is just an hour, two nights a week. Gets me out of the house, have met some great friends there and gets me moving. Gives me 6000-8000 steps in that one hour
I wish dh would join me in in part of getting a bit healthier. He could use it even more than me. He is diabetic, has high BP, stressed all the time and prefers take out to healthier home cooking. Snacks all the time and doesn't exercise at all. He has walked with me at the wetlands once and he barely made it(he told me after we were done, and I took him on the shorter path that I do easily all the time) I know it would be good for him physically and mentally3 -
Lisa - Enjoy!
Normal morning, 75 minutes exercise, and editing my book.
Watching a decluttering video inspired me to put a bag of hair clips, hair decorations, in the donate box. I haven't worn them in 25 years! I also threw some old makeup in the trash.
I took away the big silver balls from the bowl, but kept the lights and the twigs to brighten up January, like Tracey's vases. I like it.
My word for this year is PEACE. In every aspect of life. Letting go of agitation. Simplifying. Loving the things and people I love. Small epiphanies. Joy.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx4 -
Today I bypassed the candy aisle, a win win for me. Bought a roast chicken instead. I did buy a dark chocolate bar though. Also bought cups of mandarin oranges. For some reason I get such a kick out of mixing pink grapefruit segments, and mandarin oranges. Its like sunshine for my taste buds. I put them in containers of four, so I get two weeks worth of citrus fun.😁 I can't have citrus fruits every day because it does a number on my mouth, but twice a week is fine.
Finally made a dentist appointment for both husband and I, in February. I am embarrassed to admit that the last time I visited a dentist it was 2009. I do floss, and brush twice a day religiously, though that is no excuse. I do have some places in my gums that are sensitive, so hopefully they can put me out or numb me up when cleaning. I have zero pain tolerance.😳

MargaretTurk I have quit working as I know it would be too much to work and to keep up with student teaching and the requirements I need for that. I wish I would have been able to start my teaching a lot sooner but such is life.
Kevrit I have a reading goal, too! I read 40 books last year I wanted to read 20. What genre of books interest you? I like murder mystery the best. I am reading all the Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot books. I have finished my 13th one this afternoon while waiting for my son Lennox to get out of school.
Eli, my 4th son, has been driving without his instruction permit. So my morning consisted of getting mad at both twins. Eli losing his permit he thought his ID was it, and Peyton, my third son and Eli’s older twin, canceling the driving lesson. Then I went with Eli to the department of motor vehicle and was told that we needed to get the drying school to sign the back corner area because he his under 18 and that made me even madder. I couldn’t understand why he needed that if we just needed a replacement card. Then we drove to the driving school and it was closed. I ended up calling the number and then was told to come back at 12:15 that he would be there then and could sign it then. So we come back and stand outside waiting for the instructor for almost an hour. It was such a mess. But he did sign it went back to the DMV and waited quite a bit and had to pay $35 for a new instruction permit as it expires next month.
After taking Eli home I left to go drop something off at the Amazon drop off at Kohls and then pay my Kohls charge. I was hungry so I stopped for a turkey sub on wheat.
I didn’t get to walk the mall today as I hoped to do.

I harvested a raspberry today!! lol the pen is to give a size reference. I only have a few canes and they put out a last flower burst in August so I’m pretty tickled that they did anything. Sadly lacking in flavour tho, they really need the heat for that, but it’s January in the northern hemisphere so I’ll take it!

Didn’t spin or go to the gym. I have to get my California drivers license this year (exp. 2025). I have all the information from my previous marriages (married 4 times) except for husband #1 so I am tackling that. The county couldn’t find my marriage certificate but I was able to get my divorce paper. Hopefully that will be enough to get a license since it has my original name. Moral of the story, don’t get married multiple times!7 -
