Tina - what a shame your hiking trail was so loaded, I probably would have felt the same way. Thank you for sharing those beautiful pictures. Is that you standing next to that tall cactus? Sedona used to be on my bucket list. If I could teleport myself there and back for a day, I'd do it. Sorry about your pain - could they be adhesions or internal scar tissue from a prior surgery or infection of some type? I don't think they show up in CT scans or ultrasounds.
Heather - wow, that's a huge wave. 85 mph would probably do my roof in. You are so nice to touch base with your old friends, I sure hope G's steriods do the trick. I agree, your meals always sound so good. I appreciate you telling us what's for supper.
Barbara - 2023 was a great year for you (despite upcoming tooth visit!). You are such an inspiration to me, getting your exercise and steps in. My See's candy should be here tomorrow and I think with all of the protein I'm eating, I can enjoy one piece. We'll see. I might have to walk it across the street to Roger, lol. Thank you for the links and information you share. And I like hearing about Joe's kind heart and growing appreciation of all you do.
Lisa - good luck with the sofa cushions. Glad you were able to get things fixed up to be able to enjoy the new room a bit. Proud of your budgeting and spending skills - paying off the house and getting the room done. You should teach a class in it.
Rosemarie - after my husband died, I thought about making big changes inside the house, but glad I just replaced a totally worn out recliner. If I was to do anything, I'd rearrange the furniture in the living room. Get a professional carpet cleaner in to really give it a once-over. I used to do that in my apartment all the time before I was married. My husband forbid it and I contemplated divorcing him, lol. Not really.
I started this post yesterday. And was on the run most of the morning. So here it is. Now I need to catch up and see what you gals have been up to.

I’ve started today with 30 lbs to lose. Hit menopause and gained that amount in 2 years. I’m 56 in March so hopefully will have lost a few lbs before then.

Just dropped in to share some news... was just commiserating with my daughter that it's been a year since we saw her... and the silver lining of a recalcitrant ex making it impossible for her to pick up the kids this weekend means that she can't get them until Monday... She couldn't change her outbound flight from Hawaii without it costing a fortune, so she wangled in a trip to see us... she's flying in from ATL tomorrow morning, and then back to Columbus on Sunday night to pick up the kids on Monday. Three whole nights with her! Can't wait to see her. Would love to see the grands, too, but can't wait to see my girl.
And... the son and fiancee are coming in two weeks earlier, as well. They'll actually be here Valentine's Day. Can't wait to see them too!

Tina- talk to another doctor or push for answers.
Dh went in thinking it was his knee. First his GP thought he was just trying to get out of work, or it was all in his head. Then he sent him to PT which made it work. Wouldn't refer him to ortho but one of my daycare parents happened to work in that department and got him in. The doctor again thought he was trying to get out of work- but agreed to do xrays. As he was starting to leave, the doctor had him walk away from him again. Said to have his hips xrayed too. Came back and the doctor was super nice- told him good news was his knees were fine, bad news was, both hips were shot- options were to have them both replaced or dont and deal with the pain. At 45yrs old he had double hip replacement. Sadly he had the ones on the recall list. Just under 5 yrs later, both had to be replaced along with reconstruction because of cobalt and cromium poisoning. Blood test revealed his numbers were over 20times what they should have been. They still bother him to this day and the second surgery was 10 yrs ago now.4 -

Machka: Two friends and I went to a hotel liquidator furniture store yesterday. One friend purchased a couch for 199 dollars plus delivery. Then we went to an antique mall and I purchased 2 prints to freshen up the down stairs bathroom.
It was fun! I would ride the horse this year because it does take some agility to get on a horse! It took me about a month after COVID to get my energy back. For some people, it is much longer.

Barbie: Yes, I have car dealers calling me now! I will wait a few months. I need to start taking notes about which cars have which safety features. Safety features are important to me. Also have I posted that I have had two Honda Accords since 1997 both with the same interior. I am so tired of the car's interior. I need a change!
Good day today! I went to the cat rescue in the morning! Ran some errands...And then decided to have my car detailed. The young gentleman came to my house with a little trailer of equipment and steam cleaned the carpet . He worked on the car for 2.5 hours. Meanwhile I sat on the couch and read the news! I ignored all the chores of the house completely!

Rosemarie i bet your vehicle smells clean. When Spring finally comes I hope to get mine detailed. Are you looking for a cat? I have an almost 10 year old calico and an almost 6 year old a get and white long haired. They are named Patches and Trixie. I have had both since they were kittens. I also have a 1.5 year old Dalmatian named Belle.
I was able to go for a 30 minute walk this afternoon. I am so out of shape that I can’t walk with my dog yet. She walks fast and pulls me so hard that my shoulder ends up hurt. She does go for walks.3 -

Lisa - love the sunroom. My sitting room off the bedroom has a very large window facing south. I love sitting in the rocker there when the sun is shining. The indoor critters love it too. I often have all 3 housecats and the dog spread out all over the floor in the sun. I'm sure it will be a favorite for Egg.
Septic company coming tomorrow to pump old tank and clean out main line to cabin. I was told they would be here sometime between 9 am and 4 pm. Lol. We allowed renter to use our guest bath while work is being done and guess what? When I went in to clean there were non- flushable wipes in the toilet bowl and it would not flush. Also the garbage can was empty. Apparently she has just thrown everything in the toilet, no wonder the cabin toilet plugged up. Well she is only here 2 more months and we have put up signs saying nothing but toilet paper can go in the toilets.
When DD gets home from work we are going shopping for a new clothes dryer. Our old one died this last weekend. It smelled so bad we were afraid it might start a fire. I don't particularly mind drying clothes outside but it can be problematic here in the PNW.
Annie - please find time to go horseback riding or even just go out and groom. It is amazing how intuitive horses can be and how comforting.

exermom - thanks for the sit n fit idea. My husband bought a Cubi last year and I'm trying to use that. I have to strengthen my knee but if I put too much weight on it for any length of time, I find myself doing the karate kid Flamino pose in the middle of the supermarket cuz my knee is hurting so bad. Thank heaven for canes, saves me from falling over.3

I have made the decision rather than talk about DH. I am going to talk about what I am doing to take care of me.
I got my fermented vitamins in the mail today. I will start them tomorrow morning I got a multi for over woman over 50, Vit D, and Vit C. I will keep you posted on how I like them. I also got a device that is supposed to help me breathe better. It is good for a month and then they suggest replacing it because it works better that way. I plan to try it out tonight. After sharing I am going to watch the video that gives better direction.
I am going to volunteer in the third grade class of my neighbors tomorrow because I find it rewarding.
I made a delicious dinner with cod, squash, baked potato, and salad with a half pear for dessert. Still going through the Frango candy. I shared the memory of going to a department store in Chicago that had stain glass windows throughout. They were even found in the bathroom. My sister in law bought my Christmas present which was a mug to mark the occasion. I used the mug for my coffee today.5 -
Prebowled. I don't know why I changed my eye MD appt from the 17th to the 22nd, but I did. Then helped Vince bring in some of the Christmas decorations. Almost everything is in

Rori – I love the IP air fryer lid, so much that I bought Jess one for christmas. Makes just enough for one or two people. I originally bought it because it was advertised as a dehydrator and I thought I’d dehydrate fruit. Takes too long to dehydrate and you can’t do a lot at any one time. But for most food – yum

The dermatologist called. They had a cancellation so I go there tomorrow at 1 to get the mole that was bleeding frozen off. I bet he’ll send it in for a biopsy. But this is a new year so I have to meet my medicare deductible

Speaking of which, I wrote to NHTSB to see what was being done. In essence, they said I could make a formal complaint, which I will do. But first I need to get all the data together. VIN number, etc.. This group has only been in existence 10 years? I thought it was longer.

Hey Linda!! Long time no see. Oh, the way I can get by having only one Hershey kiss RIGHT NOW is after this root canal, I really don’t want to eat a lot of foods (anything hard). And a frozen kiss is hard

My husband, Chad, is doing this journey with me. He is not that overweight as compared to me, but I am happy that he is willing to eat more veggies and cut out soda, chips, and a lot of the other unhealthy snacks.
I am hoping that I can get to walking 3 mph by February. I start student teaching most likely in a Kindergarten classroom on the 22nd and it would be great if I can keep closer to them when we are in the hall.

Goals:
to expand my skillset and to improve our financial situation.
to keep us as healthy as we can be and to ensure we have information at our fingertips.
to improve my fitness level.

to ensure all paperwork is up to date and accessible by both of us.
to have a pleasant, creative, relaxing and functional area outside for reading, exercise and socialising.
to learn, relearn, revitalise.
to work on balance. Doing a variety of things that aren't just work and education.
Details:2024 Goals
My 2024 goals are a continuation of my past goals based on my ToDo list and my 50Things list with reference to a Wellness Wheel.
Upcoming Appointments - these are at the top of my list. The things I need to deal with in the next few weeks.
Intellectual/Occupational/Financial or Education/Career: Advancing my career. Moving from adequate to proficient at SQL, brushing up on cost accounting and learning clinical costing, learning Python and data analysis software.
Also, I want to have a closer look at our financial situation to see where we can save money and to make sure we're on top of things.
The goal is to expand my skillset and to improve our financial situation.
Medical: my husband's appointments, which I also need to attend because I'm his ears and cognition and my appointments now that I've been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease.
I also want to create medical record binders (and on the computer) for both of us, in case something happens.
The goal is to keep us as healthy as we can be and to ensure we have information at our fingertips.
Fitness/Sports > Cycling > Audax Tasmania: There are a number of fitness/sport things I'd like to try, with a focus on cycling, and a large part of my cycling endeavours includes my volunteer work with Audax Tasmania ... and maybe even riding some events again myself!
On my 50Things list I have all sorts of things like learning to swim, riding a horse for the first time, trying archery, learning to dance. Maybe this might be the year to try a bit of that.
The goal it to improve my fitness level.
House > Office > Computer become more specific as they go along. I have a number of thing which need to be done in the house (kitchen, dining room, etc.) but most importantly the home office needs a whole lot of work. And along with that I need to organise the drives on my computer into a better filing system.
The goal is to have an organised and decluttered house and computer system.
The goal is also to ensure all paperwork is up to date and accessible by both of us.
Garden: I have several projects I would like to do this year. One of the main ones is to finish the border around my dry stream and bulb garden.
The goal is to have a pleasant, creative, relaxing and functional area outside for reading, exercise and socialising.
Spiritual: Continue to read the Bible every day. And attend church a little bit more often -we've got some plans in this regard.
The goal is to learn, relearn, revitalise.
Emotional/Social/Recreation: More creativity, relaxation, connections. I have all sorts of things on my 50Things list like doing more with my photography, playing the piano again, working on my website and more.
The goal is balance. Doing a variety of things that aren't just work and education.
But first, I need to recover from COVID.

Quick intro to our new ladies. (Thank you, Machka)
I am Kylia currently in southwest Ohio. I work in my DH's lawn equipment shop. I am mother of two girls, grandmother of four (2+2). My DH is legally blind, so in a lot 9f ways I am his caregiver. I am still trying to get my #@$& together and this family of ladies have been my support for a long time. I enjoy cross-stitch, coloring, reading, dancing, singing, and walking.
Hair colored and bangs trimmed. Fuel in truck. Hairdresser wasn't really upset about me missing appointment. I am usually her last, so she just ended earlier yesterday.
Missed walking today but did do 15 mins walking backwards. DH did 20 mins backward. Yay! Migraine just there now, not painful. Just there. I will take it!

After a rough night- lots of wheezing/coughing/asthma off and on all night, got up and did some shopping with dh. Went up for Falling Prices- that was a bust but we did find some great deals at some of the other stores we went to- Best one for me was Hobby Lobby- hit the clearance section and scored a hand basket over flowing with all kinds of projects/supplies for me and also to keep my daycare girl busy.
One thing I got that I am excited to try is something called Easy Marble- liquid marbleing - the kit was originally 12.99 and I got it for 1.30!! bought 6- plus two 3pk of just the "paint" that were .69. Some acrylic paint for .09! Different pink/red tone fabric remnants super cheap.
I went in looking for Christmas mark down. Only found one thing- a brown, fake fur tree skirt that is now on my bed for the cats, the love it. Reg. price was $49.99 and I got it for $4.99.
Everything was 90% off or more. Now just need to find a place to put it(still have last weeks bag from the other Hobby Lobby sitting on the couch)

Went to zumba class tonight- kept up pretty good. Only started coughing once near the end. Felt good to really move. Hit 10,000 steps right after class. Not bad for being sick.
Have Ezie tomorrow. Last week of Winter break for her.
Back to walking the wetlands next week. Will be a bit more cautious when I am there- they found a dead guy not too far from the path I walk(he was in the wooded area I don't go in). They are guessing a homeless guy. Two teenagers were walking and found him. There is a path that goes through that area but I won't go on it alone.
So, back to walking and tracking food on Monday. Will weigh on Sunday morning to see my starting weight.

It is very simple and you can add what ever veggies you like. The meat can be ground pork, turkey or chicken. Just make sure to add lots of ginger, garlic and soy sauce.
I use the bagged salad kit because it was easy.
Eating the filling over rice is so much easier and healthier than making all those little egg rolls and frying them. I have done that many times too- 200 at a time.
Options for veggies include bean sprouts, carrots, celery, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, mushrooms, lotus root, cabbage, broccoli, kale
I added a bit of oyster sauce this time and it was really good. Had a bowl full after class tonight
Just saute the meat then start adding veggies and sauce- cook til the veggies are tender

Ginny imho the oldies but goodies are the least toxic: cast iron, stainless steel, glass. Our skillets are all cast iron, Pyrex baking dishes, Corningware and Revereware pots. Good luck!

Lanette can never thank you enough for Dr. Matt and the protein for breakfast. Have been having a cup of bone broth first thing each morning which helps postpone the oatmeal and veggie sausage “breakfast” til around 11, then a protein heavy meal around 4 and I’m done. Doubt I’ll ever get up to 80 g/protein per day but as I’m “small” anything over 60g (1 g/kilo of wt) is “gravy” What will you do to get the chicken run ready for the snow?

Simone, well done for your 30 minute walk. Both our dogs pull on leash and hurt my shoulder. Chiropractor calls it “leash arm” :laugh: When they pull, I try to stop, then not step forward until the come back to my side. Makes for slow progress and can my patience only lasts for a few minutes of training, but then I put them back in the yard and take myself for a walk. Fortunately we are safe to walk them “off leash” down our driveway to the powerline meadow.

Lisa - How thrilling to get your daughter for a few days. Hope she doesn't encounter any folks that need CPR this trip. You are the person who got me starting eating protein first last year - then it seems the Youtube channels I watch on health started focusing on it. There's a variation with eating fiber first if a person can do so, then protein. Main thing they all emphasize is carbs and starches last.
Debbie - glad to hear you are up to walking again. Is your DH in a lot of pain from those hips? If so, that has to be adding to his misery after spending time with MIL. Love reading about what you're cooking. You are quite accomplished in Asian cooking.
Kylia - thank you for that walking backwards information. Not sure I could do it for even 5 minutes, but when I'm doing my house walking I generally walk backwards down the hall maybe 10 steps. That's a start. Thanks for the photo of you looking out the window at work!
Margaret - let us know how you like those new vitamins. Also, I'm curious about the breathing device you got. Dr. Matt encourages me not to mouth breathe at night. I've tried taping my lips together, but it's hard to change this habit after 72 years but I do pretty good during the day. Nasal breathing is so good for us and our noses are equipped to kill respiratory viruses we breathe in. Something to remember when I go into stores.
Barbara - fellow rabbit-holer, lol. I'm going to extend the tarp over the girl's run, put in another center post, load their run and space under their coop with dry straw (need to rake out the old first).
Sue - oh my word, what is it with your renter not understanding "do not flush" items staying out of the toilet? DUH! She needs to use an outhouse. I just sent you a friend request, so "accept" me and then you can message me with your stats or whatever you want to have on the accountability/check in weekly post. Chickens seem to do OK in the snowy weather, they generally quit laying though. The challenge is to keep their water from being frozen. I'm lucky I can go out many times a day and pour hot water in their bowl.
Accountability/Weekly Check-in: New gals, this weekly post has been set up for anyone who wants to post anything. We report weekly progress in weight, health, exercise, whatever. The rules are wide open. Skip a week or a month - no requirement for anything, lol. As I mentioned to Sue, "friend" me and message me on Sunday or Monday morning. I try to get it posted by noon every Monday - I'm on the west coast of the US.
Also new ladies - you'll notice we are a diverse group. Some of us are losing weight/keeping it in check by daily logging, calorie restriction and/or exercise, and it's working just fine.
Some of us have decided we are going to concentrate more on improving our eating habits: cutting or severely curtailing sugar and processed foods, eating protein first at each meal and lots of it. Plenty of fruits and veggies. Walking more - a lot, whenever we can, and generally upping activity. Doing some resistance training to burn glucose and keep our muscles and bones strong and balance good. Those of us in our 60's and older who have been in meno for a while start losing muscle and bone density. That's our focus instead of just weight loss, especially since there's research that suggests a good BMI for us older gals is in the 27 range. Overweight!
I'm in the second group. At the beginning of 2023, my goal was to get back in my favorite pants which were tight around the waist and lose the 8 or so pounds I'd put on after my husband died in May 2022.
After the information we shared and discussed, weight loss and those pants are at the bottom of my list.
Future Self: I'm now on the road to "accumulating health". And I'm doing it for my future self. That person who wants to get her A1C back down. Who wants her balance to be better. Who wants to be stronger and be able to lift a bag of chicken feed without throwing her back out. Who wants to eat a meal so satisfying she's not tempted to snack an hour later. That gal who wants her brain to stay sharp until she dies on her 100th birthday when her parachute fails to open on her celebratory jump!

Dr. Hong's Pharmacy Classroom - walking is very good for our brains and even 4,000 steps makes a difference. Ed Deboo - 5 simple exercises for the over 60's - great for the over 50's too, especially if we are out of shape or haven't exercised in a while for whatever reason. Check out #5, "The Grapevine". I surprised myself and could do it. He's a physical therapist in Bellingham, WA and tailors his videos to older folks. I like his resistance training with therabands ideas and need to get back to doing it.
And finally, again, Dr. Matt. He's my Naturopath and his philosophy is start really small and build on each success. "Accumulate health." Don't jump into everything all at once because it's a set-up for failure. I'm going to see if he'll do a video dedicated to us older gals. I figure if I can follow 80% of his suggestions, he'd agree I'm "crushing it."

Morning my dearlings, from the just barely-dawn darkness of the Arkansas River Valley,
I've been up for nearly 3 hours... but twitchy, excited about getting my daughter here for a few days. Got up for the usual reasons, but couldn't go back to sleep. That's OK. I just have to make it through arriving up there in Fayetteville to pick her up, then she can drive us home and her daddy will drive her back on Sunday.
Am sitting out in the sunroom typing this, which is all kinds of cool... on a makeshift stool at the table, though, as there is still no word from the couch people. If they don't call today, I'll start beating Home Depot up about it. If no satisfaction from them, then I'll dispute the charge. Always ways to get what you're owed if you go about it right. Just can't fix it if I can't get people to answer the phone, which the vendor won't.
Anyway, need to go get twitchy all over the house, get a shower, get things picked up, get the bed set up for her, etc. Can't believe I'll be able to hug her just a few hours!
