I’m having a hard time following the conversation here. It’s just one big thread? And how do you/we reply to previous people?
It is one big thread! Like all the forums of the past 25 years and not like Facebook.

Hello everyone. I am Laurie from Texas.6
-
Went to the Y and used the stairstepper and then took the water aerobics class. Afterwards went to the Salvation Army (got 2 DVD’s) then Aldi. The guy came and took down the tree. He was going to trim another tree that’s hanging over the neighbor’s, but I couldn’t get someone to move the cars so he’ll do it another day. Took my walk to the vet to get a prescription for Loki. Newcomer bowling tonight.
Rori – Consumer Report just did a study on mattresses. You might want to check it out, too.
Supposed to go to the orthopaedist tomorrow about my tight calve. It’s really not getting any better and I’m stretching it to nobody’s business. Interested to hear what he has to say.
Then Fri I go to the dentist just to be sure the infection is gone and all’s ok for FL
Lanette – the tree was some sort of evergreen. I wasn’t home when the tree actually came down so I’m not sure if he climbed it or not. Vince said that when he took it down they did find little ants in it eating the bark which is probably what weakened it. He was going to trim a limb on another tree that was hanging over the neighbor’s cars, but we couldn’t get someone to move the cars so when he comes back (and I have no idea when that’ll be) he said he’d trim it as long as the cars aren’t there.
Made hard boiled eggs in the IP
Annie – I am so impressed with the fact that you always get right back to exercise. You don’t rush it, you take it slow at first. But you do it, and that’s what’s important
Dia-R – welcome. Come back often. This is one thread until the end of the month when barbie will post a link to a new thread for the next month. We’re just a very prolific bunch so don’t feel you have to respond to everyone. I don’t think anyone does that. I, for one, just keep a word document open and when I want to respond to someone, I just type their name and what I want to say.
Rita – I agree with you, change diet rather than taking all kinds of meds. Then you wind up having all sorts of interactions. Wish I could get Vince to realize this. He’ll take a med for this and a med for that
Laurie TX – welcome!

Lisa - that’s not too bad for a wait. Our healthcare system in Canada is on the brink of collapse I fear. The federal government pushes it to the provincial and the provincial can’t seem to do much.
My friend has a truck and had rented a UHaul to move other stuff. Sometimes people just don’t think.
It’s funny what works for one doesn’t for another. I had a trackball mouse and ended up with the first signs of carpal tunnel. I then had a small little pretty mouse and ended up with tennis elbow. Turns out I need a mouse that fits my whole hand and I use it right on the desk. I also found out that all of the scrolling on my phone was causing me issues with my wrist, elbow and shoulder. Apparently it’s a gamers thing. 🤷♀️
Kylia - do you have to be responsible for those things for DH? Can he not take care of some of his own stuff. I used to take care of that stuff for my DH, but recently I have backed off and let him deal with his own stuff.
I admire how much you do both work wise and personally.
Heather - I have been reading about shrink wrapped things being mailed and how difficult the wrinkles are to get out. Maybe when you can you should hang the dress in the bathroom when taking a shower to let the steam help.
Businesses are shrink wrapping for shipping cost savings.
It’s a big topic on one of my crafting groups lately.
Rebecca - I am so incredibly happy for you!!!!!!!!
Debbie - I had to chuckle a bit about you not seeing what you expected, but I truly understand your disappointment. I always wanted to go to Texas, I guess probably because I grew up watching Dallas and the soap opera called Texas. I also read a lot of books based on Texas. I’m 1995 I finally got there when I was in a trip with DH when he was driving truck. I was so disappointed, I didn’t see a real cowboy, tumbleweed or long horned steers. I do think I might have seen an oil Derrick, not sure though.
Then the first few times we went to the mountains here, I never saw any wildlife except mountain sheep. Again, disappointing.
I have seen bald eagles a few times in my life. I wish I had gotten a picture this summer there was one flying where DH and I had gone to see the sunset on our vacation. I was so in awe I couldn’t think to get my phone out fast enough. He was a beauty.
Machka - I don’t schedule time to think and plan because my brain has a real hard time not planning, thinking, rehashing. I struggle to have a quiet mind and not think about that stuff to “just enjoy the moment”. I’m trying very hard though.
I went for lunch with a friend, stopped at my other friends to get the wheelbarrow, ended up loading up my car with stuff for her. She’ll get it tomorrow. She took a load to her camper and came here to eat her takeout before heading back to the city.
I have a busy day tomorrow, I’m hoping for some me time too.
I’m off to bed.

Well Teddy woke me up and the power is out. Wait- now it is back on. Wonder what happened? There's no storm, no construction. Makes me nervous about hackers and such. Oh well back to sleep. It might take awhile but sleep will come.

To all of you ...
Do you allow yourself or even better, schedule in, time to think?
Time to reflect on what you have learned recently. Time to think and plan.
Machka in Oz
Further on this ...
I attended a webinar today on productivity and one of the things they suggested was to schedule time for thinking, reflecting, planning, generally contemplating etc.
If we don't, we run the risk of just going from one thing to the next (being reactionary) or having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or focusing on non-work things because our brain wants to think. So in the quiet time while we are dozing off, our brains will grab that moment to go over what happened in the day and to think about what may happen tomorrow or next week or next month. Or while we should be listening to our partner, our brain is busy trying to solve a work problem.
But if we schedule 15 minutes at the end of the work day to think about what we've done and what is next (and maybe to jot it down), we can leave it there and move into our home life. And when we return to work, we can pick up where we left off.
The same could apply to going to university or working on a home project.
I used to do a lot of thinking when I cycled long distances and when I ran longish distances. These days I am not exercising nearly as much as I should, and I also don't have that time to think. I find when this happens I start to feel overwhelmed because I don't know where I am with things.
Since his accident, my husband sits with his eyes closed and thinks about the next task or project he wants to work on.
Before the accident I presume he would think while doing ... I do that. If I am about to start a garden project, I will immediately go out there, start measuring or hacking at the soil, and the project comes together while I am doing it. But then my brain wants to think about it at 1 am!
The topic of thinking also got me to think about one of my pet peeves about school, university etc. ... no time to think. I have been bombarded with information, and I tried to get my assignments done as quickly as possible because the next assignment was coming right up and there was little time to think and absorb the knowledge.
Right now at work, I am deep into SQL code. I have taken several SQL courses but still felt like a beginner because I couldn't fully understand it. Now I am allowed to find solutions on my own and I am discovering that finding those solutions involves quite a lot of time where I just think to understand all aspects of the problem and the possible SQL solutions. I finally feel like I am not just a beginner SQL programmer.
A few thoughts on thinking.

Today’s gratitude: that I tasted the Muenster before giving it to the dogs. Looked good, smelled ok, but YUCK! Tasted moldy.
Lanette alas there is no fiber in my tea. Coffee wouldn’t be health food when I got done doctoring it (sugar, cream, flavorings etc). Good girls indeed, wonder if I could borrow neighbor’s hens to slug sweep the garden? Don’t want to keep chickens of our own, we consider them cougar and coyote attractants. :{
Kylia prayed for your son’s FIL’s peaceful transition.
Annie ((hugs)) Did your doctor give you your labs or anything written down about your kidneys? Yay you for the ten on the bike!
Margaret ((hugs)) one foot in front of the other ((hugs))
Beth I love that meme! Brava on the treadmill!
Heather so important to schedule those times
@KetoneKaren, count me in with Rori and Lanette. Miss you and hope all’s well with you and yours.
Belated welcome @Dia_R ! You can do this!
Vicki Prayer said for favorable CT scan. ((hugs))
Rita “normal ultrasound. . . simply by doing diet” so VERY well done! Thanks for the “DO NOT TAKE” meme and to Flea for the ibuprofen caution. Been taking ibuprofen for the last month for my shoulder. Going back to plain ol’ aspirn.
Kim ((hugs))
Allie love your “beyond blessed” positive attitude.
Lisa, hand falling asleep with conventional mouse? Scary! Thanks for yours to @Dia_R so clear! You and Corey are inspiring. We have no will, no POAs nothing. Joe doesn’t want to talk about it and to be honest neither do I. Any hints? Anyone???
Machka likewise thanks for yours to @Dia_R. Back to walking and stairs? Brava! Glad you’re feeling better. Insightful thoughts on thinking. . .
Tina and Barbie, your “less” and “enough” are inspiring, but I’m sticking with ”move more” for now. Maybe later I’ll shift it to be “Move better”
Rebecca Eeeee! I am so happy for you!!!
Debbie we had a land line in San Leandro that acted up like your mom’s whenever it rained. Never could fix, finally just moved away
Teri look forward to pic of your crocheted gilet.
Welcome @laurieumphrey4953 Laurie from TX!
Michele maybe it’s time for a massage for your tight calf? Safe travels!
Tracey have you had any luck in finding a new MD?

I don’t need to schedule in time to think. 😂 It seems to happen naturally. I’m frequently ruminating on what I have learnt, and planning what I want to achieve. And I have developed the knack of mostly being able to switch off from a project so that it doesn’t impact my sleep.
This afternoon I’m doing the demo at flower arranging so spending sone of the morning doing prep

What spurred me on to get our wills done when my husband had recovered a bit from his accident was the realisation that if he hadn't survived, there was the possibility that his first wife and his kids could lay claim to whatever the courts deemed was his. That scenario might not have happened but that there was even a small chance was enough to get us into a lawyer!!
Ours is very simple. My stuff goes to him. His stuff comes to me.
It's not scary ... it's just a reassurance that if something happens to one of us, the other can continue living as we have been.

Of course it happens naturally ... as long as we're alive, we can never stop thinking.
But I'm referring to undistracted thinking time. Thinking time where that's all we do or the main thing we do. When I'm cycling, I'm not distracted by computers, TV, music, books, people asking me to do things or wanting to converse with me, etc. etc. etc.
One thing I like about working from home is that I can sit in my chair, close my eyes, and thinking through the problem I am trying to solve. At work, I don't think I could close my eyes!

Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
We live in a 'light touch' parking zone, where there is no parking between 10-11 am and 7-8 pm. This was designed to prevent commuters, leisure and day tripper tourists parking here all day. Recently the council was threatening and blackmailing us by saying we either went to a full 8 am -8pm scheme, like central Hove, or our parking permit would be much more expensive. Fortunately, they decided at the last minute to consult.
We were horrified. It would make life sooooo much more difficult for visitors etc, even though we are lucky enough to have a driveway. Also trades people. We have visitor tickets, which we have paid for, but they are a nuisance for a short visit.
John filled in the online form. Apparently, so did hoards of others and the council have just decided to scrap the new plan, and also only charge a reduced increase in the fee. Victory! The people have spoken!
Machka - As a writer and creative person, I have always had to allow myself masses of time for , what I call, 'moodling'. I need it and have always made sure I got it. Those times in my life when I didn't have it were very, very unhappy. I have also had to fight misunderstanding, as to why I needed lots of space and could not schedule lots of things. Most people do not understand the creative process and how self-protective you have to be. My writing came first and I protected the space it needed.
I also am a great fan of 'back of the head work' . The sorting out in the brain that takes place without you consciously thinking about it. Space, calm, quiet, sleep. Fun. Doing nothing important. Then it's amazing what the brain comes up with.
I also think if someone is anxious, or ruminating, about a problem, then writing it down is extremely helpful. Ins and outs, worst case, best case etc. Some problems need focus, and some need space. Being able to live with uncertainty, or a burgeoning project, is a skill we can develop. I prefer not to shape things too precisely until the last moment, because I want to allow for the flowering of another nuance.
On a different project it might be essential to map out steps early.
For me, my moodling times are the most precious. I spend most of my day at it, and include a nap in that essential state of being.

Barbara- Yes the scheduling has been a success on many levels. Not the least being less stress over our morning cup of tea. It's had the same effect as getting a cleaner. Less expectation, less uncertainty, less guesswork. Peace.
Today we have a painting session planned. I'm going to try to get my unsuccessful watercolour of Edie onto a small canvas with acrylics. I'm aiming at a Matisse homage. I'm nervous, but I'm going to have a go.
Expecting a Waitrose delivery any minute.

Well, I kicked my Dr. Pepper habit somewhat completely. However, I can't seem to get off the sugar completely. I've been drinking soda water with a bit of juice as my replacement. I need to figure out how to get rid of that too. I am sleeping a little better, so the caffeine was bumping me up at night, but here I am. Still up in the middle of the night.

As a perpetual student and in the positions I've held, instructors and employers have liked quick results which have not left a lot of time for thinking about what I'm doing ... or about what would be the best, the most efficient, the most effective, the most advantageous way to do it. I like doing things well, but in the interests of time and other pressures, they're rarely perfect. And I'm often thinking that if I just had an extra week or month, I could take the time to really think the solution through ... but it's rare I'm given time like that.
However, I found it interesting, in the webinar today, that leaders in our organisation are starting to schedule short periods of time for thinking things through, rather than just always reacting to whatever comes up. Maybe culture is changing. Maybe fast isn't necessarily best.

Re: Coffee - Found something the other day that said add a tiny bit of salt to the coffee grounds to take away the bitterness. We use a Keurig, so no coffee grounds… but I’ve found if I just put a few grains of kosher salt in a 12-oz cup of coffee, I can cut the amount of creamer and sweetener in half. Just throwing that out there.
Rach in Birmingham, UK, Laurie in Texas, Dia, everyone who’s new, welcome! I’m always pleased to see folks starting in February because it means they understand not to wait. Don’t wait until Monday, January, next week, next year, whatever, to start changing the way you eat or the exercise you do. Start now. Today. This minute. If you wander off the path, start again! Now. Not tomorrow.
Proud of y’all, glad you’re here. Chime right in on any conversation. They move fast, but no worries – if you add the person’s name in front of your comment to them, they’ll get it, or the quote function I explained a page or so ago . And, if you bookmark this link, it will drop you right back into the discussion where you were last: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10908717/women-ages-50-for-february-2024#latest You can also use the MyFitnessPal bookmark at the top of the page, which might be easier if you're on a phone.
Machka – Like Heather, I’ve always needed that time as well, so whether I worked in a cubicle or an office, I had a sign I would put up that said “Genius burning,” The reference is from Little Women, which most people didn’t get, but it did give me that time I needed to think and absorb as necessary, sometimes with my eyes closed! Now it would say “DND,” which most people would recognize from their phones as “Do Not Disturb,” and which I do use a lot on my phone, incidentally.
Heather - I'm working on my acrylic refrigerator mural, and I get the fear... For me, it's working best to literally add one color at a time and then walk away. Otherwise, I start getting too panicky--as soon as the thoughts start crossing my mind of what it's going to take to either scrub it off or cover it up, I walk away and wash the paintbrushes. That makes it quite slow, but it's good for my slightly pathological need to finish things before I stop working on them, as well as the fact that I am seldom happy with anything I paint. We are all works in progress...
More later, perhaps, no real plans for anything today.
Hope it is or was a lovely Thursday for everyone...
Love,
Lisa in AR

Good morning ladies!
Machka I spend too much time sitting around waiting for the clock to move. Plenty of thinking time. It suits me that way, although I have to be careful not to get stuck in a criticism rut. For example, sometimes I focus on why my father annoys me, which is not a helpful question.
Great job getting back on the stairs! Marvelous!
Barbara I don't really remember what my doctor said about my kidneys. I'm sure there were test results, but nothing I remember.
Have a great day my friends!

Just ran across this on NPR - for anyone that it crosses their mind to write, paint, or any other creative thing, but feels they're not creative, or won't do it well, here's a link on how to add it into your life. For those who are new, one thing I think we've all found useful is to address the whole person when you're trying to be healthy - mind, body and spirit are all intertwined. Losing weight is not an isolated task or goal, it's part of an overall.4
-
Lisa - very wise words. If I could just convince myself to respond to stress with art instead of food! It wouldn't matter if I made anything "good" or not. Making my body healthier is plenty of benefit.

You ought to look into a tricycle, (3wheels), that will help with fear of loss of balance. We’ve finally cut down to one 1/2 marathon a year (13.1 miles). Other than running on a treadmill at the gym, we retired from doing full marathons and the occasional 5k runs that we were doing in Washington when we lived there. There is a run every weekend if you looked for one, the registration for them can end up breaking you. 30-45 bucks a pop! We can do the 5k on a treadmill (3.1 miles) or outside on our own for free.

Good morning ladies!
Welcome new gals. As Barbie and Lisa mentioned, please add your name (nickname is fine) and location (general is fine) to the end of every post so we (at least I ) can cement in our brains who you are and keep track. And not get you mixed up with someone else who has the same name. Notice that most of us who have been on this thread for years usually always end with this type of signature unless we are in a hurry or get distracted. Just an FYI and thank you in advance!
Barbara - sorry to hear about Joe's vehicle problems. Hope there's an easy and inexpensive fix.
Chicken story:yesterday afternoon I went to let the girls out of their run for a supervised roam around the yard to get worms and bugs. They refused to come out of their run and stood at the gate with their heads cocked, looking up at the sky. There were three turkey buzzards circling overhead. After a few minutes, the big birdies flew off and the hens were OK with coming out to eat grass and scratch around for a few minutes. Just about everyone around here keeps their hens in a run with some type of a roof - fencing, tarps, or both - to keep them protected from big kitties and the like. I'm grateful mine can be easily lured back into their run with treats after their short free-range walks.
Machka - people process information at different rates, and employers need to realize that. I tended to jump in and give quick fixes without thinking things through real well and were grateful others on my team took the time to grind through the detail - which is how their own brains were wired. Once I got used to it, it was fun to watch the process of getting from A to B successfully. These days I have the freedom and time to investigate and plan so am always thinking about something.
I am addicted. I admit it. I am back to three cups of coffee, with milk, per day, after I've eaten breakfast. No more black coffee first thing when I get up and my stomach appreciates it. But, my foot hurts and I feel like crap until I get at least 2 cups of that coffee down. Then, my mood changes, the world looks brighter. My legal drug of choice. No need for ibuprofen or acetaminophen, giving my kidneys and liver a break.
Heather - happy your parking situation got figured out and the neighborhood voice of reason overruled the proposed new rule. What did they expect people to do? It pays to show up.
House walking: My friend T is going to start house-walking with 2# weights. She has watched me do it for months and decided it's time. I loaned her my copy of "Strong Women Stay Young" too, as she's supposed to start some strength training per her doctor. She's 53 and past menopause, so it's a good time to start working on all of this. I had lunch with her yesterday and reminded her to go slow, build on successes however tiny they are and she'll get there without hurting herself and having setbacks. She is on track with stopping the diets, being OK with higher BMI, and working on health.
Strong Women, Strong Bones I'm now reading "Strong Women, Strong Bones". It's a little dated since it was written over 2 decades ago, but most of the information is still applicable and of course, there's the strength training.
New ladies - if you aren't familiar with the "Strong Women Stay Young", here's a link to "Growing Stronger" - Strength Training for Older Adults," a free publication with a lot of info that's in the book.

Lisa - great article on adding art. Thanks for sharing it.
Kim, I appreciate your concern and if we had children (we didn't) I'd be on more on top of this deed and vehicle title transfer stuff, it can get complicated I'm sure. Sorry to hear what went on with your grandmother. My executor is aware of the status of the deed and vehicle titles if I don't get around to it and die tomorrow. She knows where the Community Property Agreement is and DH's death certificate and my will, as well of all other important documents and accounts/passwords. Her BIL is in charge of trusts at my bank so he's probably seen a great deal of deed transfers and can walk her through it if she has any questions. I think mine will be easy. Still mulling over updating my will.
Seems like every state is a little different on how wills and inheritance works so best to check with an attorney or someone local. Banks often have good resources (see trusts above) and knowledge about how this works.
Of course, my plan is to blow through every red cent by the time I kick the bucket at 95.
DH and I decided to get our wills and financial and medical POA's done when he had a rough bout with diverticulitis about 15 years ago which landed him in the hospital for several days and they scheduled surgery. Woke him up enough that he was agreeable to getting that paperwork done. A window of opportunity.
Had lunch with T and another friend R yesterday - it was a lot of fun and we plan to make it a monthly thing. We have a lot in common. I hadn't talked to T in quite a while, she is retired but making extra income by doing odd jobs. She's a jill of all trades and I might hire her for a day to get stuff done this spring if my handyman Roger gets too booked up.
Better end this epistle before you all get eyestrain.
Make it a great Thursday!

To all of you ...
Do you allow yourself or even better, schedule in, time to think?
Time to reflect on what you have learned recently. Time to think and plan.

I try to do this but call it meditating. I don’t schedule it, because every time I do, someone or something interrupts me. I need to leave my RV and head over to one of the trails, find a quiet place away from where everyone walks and just think there, or listen to a guided meditation. That is where I reflect on things. I would schedule if I knew it would be respected as my time.
(Edit for Machka’s second post on this). Machka I know how you like to keep busy, how about trying small project plans for each thing you need to consider? Make small flow charts or something like “Thought Bubbles” with the topic in it, then link to it, or leave it for the next day? There are Apps for this. I sometimes use “MindNode”. I’m not sure it is still free, but you can try it to get the idea. I did one for my personality a while ago, see in spoiler.

The federal government pushes it to the provincial and the provincial can’t seem to do much.My friend has a truck and had rented a UHaul to move other stuff.
Rebecca - I am so incredibly happy for you!!!!!!!!Snowflake1968 wrote: »
Come to New Mexico! I see all of these things within 25 miles or in Roswell. At least 1 at day!Snowflake1968 wrote: »
