WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2024

no real plans this weekend except for church and potluck after.
Celebrating our church's 65th anniversary.
They have asked a few people to make recipes in memory of members who have passed on. I do not know the lady who used to make the recipe I got.
It is a banana split cake.
No room in my freezer so having the assist. pastor and his wife pick it up and putting it in the freezer at church. They live down the street from me and are going over for a luncheon at the church tomorrow(I am not going)

I cooked something new tonight. I put a can of diced tomatoes in a skillet with chicken strips and simmered fifteen minutes. Very simple but pretty good.
Well, back to bed. I've become an early to bed person.

Annie - I know it’s been hard for you to have outside activities with caring for your Mom & Dad but is there anything you can do that piques your interest in the house? Waiting for the time to go doesn’t seem like it would be very fun or healthy.
Lisa - sounds like a productive couple of days for you coming up.
Beth - I would think the cochlear implant would be exciting if nerve-wracking.
Dia_r - I don’t let the scale dictate what I’m doing, I’m saying that I do weigh daily, but keep an average over a week and a month. When I was actively losing it seemed that the scale never budged for long periods, but my pants felt better and that was an encouragement.
Rita - this nine year old can solve a cube in 25 seconds! I never could either. I didn’t have the patience to figure it out I guess.
They were saying it’s Pizza Day on the radio this morning. I think that will be supper.
Joy - that is scary about the bees. Thanks for confirming.
Kaitlyn came to help me paint today she showed me a video of a lady that put a cross stitch pattern blown up to paint it on her nursery walls. What a beautiful thing it turned out to be. I’ll have to ask her to send me a link. It was beautiful.
Heather - I will be needing to rest by back and feet by Monday for sure. Tomorrow shouldn’t be too bad.
We managed to get two coats on in 8 hours, that included all the taping as well.
Kaitlyn did the hallway with white and the dark blue on the back of the cabinets. I did all of the light blue.
Tomorrow we have one more wall and the beam over the sink to do.
I even painted my little ceiling above the sink blue.
The before:

Love the painting and the new blue, Tracey. Good job. You've been waiting so long for this. Isn't it great to have a painting partner!
Resting my legs today. I'll see if it makes any difference. Slept OK, with minimal painkillers.

The major reason was to pad my retirement, but the other was just to say I could do it. It was a good time. Kids were grown and out on their own. No grandkids yet. My health was still good as was Dave’s. Getting National Board Certified and then getting my doctorate were the two hardest and smartest things I ever did.
Well done!!
Despite the fact that I likely have 10 years of work left, I don't think getting a doctorate will make any difference in my pay and definitely not in my retirement.
The only reason I think about it is because I'd kind of like a doctorate. But I don't know what I would focus on for my thesis. What did you do yours on?
Meanwhile, I'm taking shorter courses.
My current courses are on Clinical Costing.

I've been thinking about Annie and Rosemarie and any others of you who are feeling tired, or flat.
Of course, a physical thing should be ruled out first, thyroid, ME etc, but my feeling is, you have both been through so much. Caring is physically and mentally exhausting. It rips your identity out of you, until you don't even know who you are any more. Be compassionate to yourselves if you need time and rest before the 'rebuilding' phase. Annie is still in the thick of it. I send my heartfelt best wishes to you.
Strangely, I just watched an episode of the new 'Queer Eye' on Netflix, which features a male carer. Very revealing and compassionate. Then just now, I've been listening to 'We Can Do Hard Things', my favourite podcast, and they are talking about rest and rebuilding. Give it a listen both of you. Episode 279, 'Amanda's rebuilding year +'. There is also something on 'play'.
Then I heard my beloved Martha Beck, in 'The Gathering Room' talk about intentional rest, like going to bed for four days. 'Rest for Success'.
That inspired me to give my legs a rest! I could see that John is sceptical, because he believes in ploughing on regardless, but I am going to give rest a try. I did some stretching and upper body stuff this morning, but that's it.
Annie - I was wondering, apart from giving yourself grace, and rest, whether a complete change of scene would help. You could get your sister to come down for however many days she could manage, and you could go off for a riding holiday, or a trip to a language area that you have been studying. That may sound ridiculous, but it can be done. Or, you can just go anywhere for a short break. Even a night or two away brings a different perspective. Just a thought.
Much love to all. Rest. Be selfish. Be compassionate to yourself. Play. Whatever looks like a little bit of fun - do it.
And to those who are feeling rested and robust, (!!!!) do the thing you want to and feel you cannot do. Yes! Yes! Yes!

I can't remember when I felt rested and robust!
But I do feel slightly more energetic this week.
When we went to Canada, part of the idea of being there was to sleep more than usual. For a month, I was sleeping 10-12 hours a night. I only felt marginally more rested than usual.
Then for about 3 weeks over Christmas I was sleeping 10-12 hours a night again, plus a few days where I was in bed about 18 hours and slept about 15 hours, and one day where I was in bed all day. But I had COVID then.
I'd be tempted to do the 4 days in bed thing, but somehow I doubt that would help for more than about half a day.
I think some of us are experiencing the exhaustion of having to be the responsible adult in a situation where we've gone from sharing that responsibility to shouldering it all ourselves ... and there's a large element of grief. Grief from losing a partner or close family member, grief from a drastically changed family situation, grief that our lives aren't what we had or expected. Grief is exhausting.

Hi all not new to the app, just new to participating in the community. Last 2 years was a wild ride for me health wise. Now that I've been cleared to exercise my focus this year is to lose the weight I gained while sick and to become strong again.
It's so hard at 54. BUT..I promised myself not to make myself crazy with being super strict about it - we are meant to enjoy our life and at 54 and having almost died - I'm hyper aware that life is short. I don't want my husband's last memory of me to be refusing a date night because the restaurant menu gives me anxiety. It's all about balance.
That said, I started back on here January 19th at 163 and this morning I was 160.2 on my scale. Slow and steady. And here's a happy bird from my walk to start your day❤️

Good morning, my dears, from the gray Arkansas River Valley... won't see the sunshine until Tuesday, unfortunately,
Lanette - The bright, sunny days wake me up and get me moving, too, until mid-June, and then they become sleepiness and somnolence, to avoid the heat of the day. Then my body clock switches over to cool, cloudy mornings as the time of energy and drive.
Machka - Still on that subject, if I slept 10 to 12 hours a day, I would be so headachy and sick I would be ill. I don't know how you do that. I took a two-hour nap yesterday and slept only four hours last night. The amount of hours you sleep would be, for me, disabling. I find the range of human behavior just fascinating.
@maitlandshopgirl - Welcome, drop into any conversation, and please sign your posts with what name you'd like to be called and a general area, so we can get to know you! Glad you're here, along with our other new chums.
Went to get my hair cut yesterday, and she cut it FAR too short. That's OK, it will grow out. Just frustrating. I show every beautician the same picture that's in my profile here, and this is the second one in a row that's cut it way shorter than I wanted. Every time I find one who's good, she moves on to another salon or just quits the biz. Ah well, with it this short, I won't have to go looking for another cut for at least three months, if not four! Silver lining in everything...
Corey's off to rewire a work friend's trailer in a bit, so I won't see him for most of the day, but I've already got the third load of laundry going anyway. The silver lining of insomnia, at least for me. I also want to pull the bathroom apart and deep clean it, but won't do that until he pulls out, much easier to do when it's just me here.
Our son and his fiancée will be here Wednesday, so I also need to get the home workout room turned into a bedroom, as well, even though they'll be here just one night. So, lots to keep me busy this weekend. Never did get out and do anything outside yesterday, too hurty and tired, thus the nap that wrecked my sleep last night! It's all cyclical...
Hope it is/was a peaceful Saturday for all,
Love y'all!

Regarding sleeping ... if I get less than about 8.5 hours of sleep, I wake up feeling headachy and sick! Unfortunately, every night before a work day, I get less than 7.5 hours of sleep, so every work day, I wake up feeling headache and sick, and don't start feeling OK for a couple hours.
On weekends, I regularly sleep 10-11 hours. I do get up and use the toilet of course, but about a minute later I am fast asleep again. I usually wake up naturally somewhere between 10 and 11 hours ... or occasionally more. And I feel good! No headaches. No nausea. And usually enough energy to tackle the garden and go for a bicycle ride!
I wish I could sleep more during the week but there is too much to do.
When I was younger, I would sleep 10-12 hours a night during vacation for about a week, then it was like I caught up and for the rest of my vacation I'd only sleep about 9 hours a night, but not any more. I didn't "catch up" during the month in Canada at all.

Good morning ladies!
Heather and Tracey, yes my life is pretty simple and a little sad. I leave the house about twice a week. It could well be grief. The funeral was almost a month ago. I feel like my main goals right now are not to eat, and not to spend money. But my next project will be taxes. Not much choice there. And getting Teddy to the vet. And getting my glasses checked.
When my sister comes, I like to visit with her. But she is not coming for a few months. Her daughter, who lives with her, is pregnant and due soon. The daughter's other girl is maybe eighteen months old. So Sarah won't leave them this spring unless my dad has an accident.
I also get depressed by world and US politics. I used to read all that for a living and I can't put it down. I know we don't discuss politics so I don't want to bring it up other than to say generically the news is depressing to me.
Anyway, spring is coming. Daylight is better. Dad has been seeing friends at the senior center, which lessens my load. My taxes ought to be easy. There are several things to be grateful for. I just need to work on my chores so I have energy for a better project. I'm grateful for my friends on this forum who care about me.
Have a good day!

Annie, I am with you. The news is depressing to me. I find I'm better off if I limit news to half an hour of local news and a half hour of one of the network world and national news. I record the news and on play back decide what I watch and fast forward through most of it. Friends tell me that I'm a bit irresponsible by not keeping informed. For me it is a decision that there is much I can't change and I don't want the negatives a part of my life. Being active and walking helps me with my attitude. I'd rather watch a show when I sit down to relax than news that brings me down.
Machka, I do schedule thinking/planning time at the beginning and end of each day. I'm a list gal and I update my lists of needs and wants in planning. It gives me pleasure to see what I've accomplished and keeps in mind what I have yet to finish.
My sister comes today. She has appointments at the Cancer Center beginning Monday and continuing through Monday the 19th. The scans and labs will hopefully give information that will lead to a plan giving her more comfort. These last 6 weeks have been hard ones with sinus problems, Covid and gut issues.

Edie was her usual delightful self. She came dressed in the clothes she was going to wear to an afternoon party and they ended up covered in pastels dust. Luckily I got the sweater off her at the beginning.
I managed to create a Dufyesque painting of Edie which I quite like. It's a bit weird, but has its own style. Edie did a card for the party boy, and a Valentines canvas for her parents. She is very self critical and kept painting over it.
Then I painted another card. Happy with that.
After a delicious lunch of gluten free sausages and salad, we had a very quick go at the pastels, just for fun. John did an amazing picture, mine was OK and Edie did three she didn't like. And covered herself in chalk. 😱
Good day.
Here is my ten minute pastel. It's better in real life.
I've always adored the pastel chalks. I used to wander into art shops, just to look at the colours.

I’ll be making this again!
MY DH who does most of the cooking has made something like this before. He refuses to use an air fryer, so puts enough avocado or lite olive oil in the bottom just to brown them. He uses the pan cover and steam to cook mostly so things stay moist. But this looks delicious! His was too. It’s amazing how we all can take the same ingredients and make totally different things with them!!6 -
Small (or not) story… After I had visited the nephrologist and Cardiologist, I decided to buy an Apple Watch for the medical stuff it does. I love the thing, but not the band. So yesterday, I really wasn’t up to my normal self, short tempered, sore all over, anxious, etc. and somehow lost the watch. I have new bands on order through Amazon, not to get here until Tuesday. I have ‘Find My Watch’ active and used that to locate it. Meanwhile, I had the neighbors and my DH searching everywhere I was looking for it. I lost it somewhere between the car and the RV. Well got the search area to about 0-10 feet within the watch but still can’t find it. It is in the RV somewhere, but because of the way I felt yesterday, haven’t found it yet. I was swinging my arms and generally not thinking straight, so could be anywhere in the RV. With DH’s ‘storage’ of stuff to save because we might need it, I still can’t find it. I have an idea where it might be where I will look after this.
Anyway, about 8:00 pm last night, I started with a nasty cold, stuffy head, sneezing, aches and pains so explains the mood all day. My mood was better by then, but I was then sick. Still am so no squats today unless I start feeling better. First cold I’ve had in at least a year so happy about that. Resting, and liquids will be the plan for today after I find my watch and take a CoVid test.
Later my friends,

Friday’s gratitude: Rumiano’s butter.
Thursday’s gratitude: Joe was able to wait for Jeep to be repaired so morning routine not disrupted. Took advantage and did both wii balance games and PT.
Machka Thanks! “Ours is very simple. My stuff goes to him. His stuff comes to me.” Then what? What if you’re both killed in a car accident at the same time? A concern here as HWY199 can be treacherous.
Heather Hooray for Johnny and others who persuaded the council. “Less expectation, less uncertainty, less guesswork. Peace.” Ah that’s the best!
Welcome @ gettingfitinmenopause Rach in B’ham! Great February plans!
Michelle in NV Con VERY gratulations on kicking Dr. Pepper. As you gradually decrease the amount of juice in your soda you can kick that too. Is there Trader Joe’s near you? They have a variety of flavored, unsweetened, zerocalorie bubble waters. My favorite is Mandarin Cranberry. Your soups look beautiful but now I’m craving beer cheese soup ;{
Lisa I could have used that sign. Often thought I should fashion some kind of hat to put on when I was deep into involved problemsolving to warn people off from interrupting. Alas, they usually got my RBF Thanks for that “add art to your life” link. You described me to a T.
Annie would you consider asking the MD’s office to sent lab results?
Lanette you called it. Shop wanted to change powersteering system? For $$$, Joe stopped at BiMart, got some fresh fluid, siphoned old out and put new in, bingo bango no squeak <$10. He plans to “flush” it again so any residual is purged. He’s happy with the Jeep… again Smart hens! That’s Joe’s plan too
Rita what you said about healthcare.IMHO Back in the day when hospitals were either county or faith based they weren’t so much under the thumb of the pharmaceutical/medical equipment industry/Federal Medicare regulations. For-profit healthcare results in best care for the 1% and less care for the rest of us.the saucer cloud pic.
Tina “move more better” yup, that’s the plan. Thanks!
Joy I thought we were rural, but we’re positively urban compared to your area. Two grocery stores seems to be a thing, Brookings (pop 6500, 5 miles south), Gold Beach (pop 1500, 20 mi north) are in the two grocery stores club. Crescent City (30 mi south) has 3, Safeway, WalMart and the Co-op. Is it any wonder I go on a shopping marathon to Winco, Trader Joe’s and Natural Grocers whenever I have to be in Medford? Prices on the coast are ridiculous.
Welcome @SaraP73 Sara from AB! Lots of support here and for motivation there’s always pip’s boot!
Michele 3 or 4 months seems like a long time to wait for your foot to stop hurting. . .
You too Lanette
Allie the new ‘do!
Kay “unannounced”? “drama” indeed. Sounds like your sister is trying to give your Mama and the aunt this gift, but wow, what a baad idea. :noway: Ah, read the update. Pray it all works out.
Tracey “dire” indeed! Whooshed a little hopeful energy your way for the local clinic to get and MD. Are there any MD’s in the next nearest town? No warranty on the Jeep, it’s a 2001 and sold “as is” He’s taking it on a test run to Gold Beach this morning. Hope he’s still happy with it when he gets home. ;} the cubing shirt! Well done!
Kylia we’re a “puppy bowl” family
Annie “trimming Teddy is like a hobby.” Now I can think of grooming Tumble as a hobby, not a task. Thanks! I always wanted to spin and weave, but never wanted it enough to actually do it ;}
Beth fingers X’d for a helpful appointment. (hugs)
Dia_R feeling deprived is a real killer. Are you able to up your protein? When I eat less protein and more carbs I want to eat everything that isn’t nailed down. ((hugs)) What Lisa, pip, Barbie, Lanette said.

Tracy ~ The blue really lightens up your kitchen. My bathroom is that color and it feels very soothing.
Rita ~ I hope you find your apple watch. The other day I could not find my phone and had DH call the number. It was ringing really loud and I still couldn't find it. Turned out it was under a paper on my computer table and DH found it. Made me feel so foolish. I have had a cold/sinus infection, sore throat for going on 3 wks. Went to urgent care Thurs. and got an antibiotic but am not sure it is working. Hope your cold gets better.
Annie ~ Glad to hear that your dad is enjoying going to the place where he can participate in activities that get him out of the house. I am sorry you are feeling like you are in a place where you don't know what to do next, but, hope your will find a way out and new things to interest you. You have had a lot to go through with your mom and now your dad.
Rosemarie ~ Sorry you are feeling tired but you must remember you have had a lot to go through with many changes this past year. Take care of yourself.
I am getting notices that my class of 1966 is having a reunion in April but know I will not go. I have never been to a reunion and have no desire to do so!
