LESS Alcohol ~ MARCH 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

Tried the Kim Crawford Illuminate last night for the 7% alcohol content and 70 calories a glass.
Quite surprisingly good as I remember.
Counted and LA overall.

Limits: 2 glasses (wine)

Last night I sipped 1/2 glass of wine, nothing big it just did not do it for me...oh this is so weird.
So DH has a cold of some sort so we are not going to the gym today even though I think my knee would survive, Wed I was not so sure LOL.
We fly out on Wed night and I don't want to chance us being even partially sickish before visiting my mother for her 90th birthday. Since the majority (95%) of my family rarely have a drink I am not worried about me on this trip. We are going to be so busy AND my DD and my 7 year old very active grand daughter will be with us. Not much of an opportunity LOL.
I started a new medication 2.2 weeks ago, maybe I mentioned that. Side effects-nauseous, vomiting, fatigue, insomnia, headache, and weight loss/lack of appetite. I can take the low constant headache, the Weight loss (6lbs in 2 weeks) but this insomnia? Example last night so I stayed up as late as I thought I could handle and went to bed at 10:30pm, 12:50 still looking at the clock. Fell asleep sometime only to wake by 6. And I mean awake!
Any suggestions beyond hot tea and calming environment to help calm the busy brain and restless body that is so tired? I DO NOT want to use alcohol for an excuse to fall asleep.3 -
@lmlmrn, my Oma used to make me a glass of warm milk. Works like a charm! Haven’t had it in decades. May have to restart this one! I get insomnia too. Sucks.
@MissMay so proud of you for putting up that boundary- she may also be dealing with an undiagnosed mental health issue, such as BPD, that I’m sure alcohol is not helping. It if she won’t seek treatment or make changes, then yes, you absolutely did the right thing. You were direct and clear. Now block her number!
@xbowhunter i am so with you. Why is it so easy to slip into old habits? Good for you in the AF day!
Guys, I’m really struggling with this LA thing. Despite my goals, I’m pouring that extra half glass of wine, if not more. . Two nights ago I had two Old Fashioned’s and was absolutely wasted going to bed. I’ve had a stressful week at work and made a beeline right to a drink to relax. New medication I’m on that’s giving me agita? Maybe- discussing with my doctor on Monday. But all I know is resolve goes right out the window at the end of the day. Even the thought of my normal NA drink in a wine glass isn’t appealing. This sucks.
Only bright spot is that for the second week in a row, I’m consistent with getting to the gym. Increasing strength training means my pants are fitting differently, even though the scale isn’t budging. Presumably I’m gaining muscle and losing fat. Let’s hope so!4 -
I have started to listen to the Naked Mind pod casts.
It is all making sense to me know why it's so hard to give up the liquid poison. I am ready to be free from its grasp.
I am taking it one situation at a time.7 -
Hello LA friends,
Had to take melatonin in the middle of the night for insomnia (for me, it’s my mind racing with too many thoughts).
After doing LA for over a year now, I find that my personal journey has not been a straight line, rather filled with lots of ups and downs and u-turns. Included in that are some real struggles and questions as I continue to learn. But isn’t life is a lot like that too?
Family situations, losses, changes, and those precious joy-filled moments - the choices I make are often congruent with what is going on and if I reflect a bit, I can see this clearly and give myself the grace I need for the day. We simply cannot beat ourselves up as that is problematic. And the best part? Every day is a new beginning to start fresh.
Even though I’m juggling some hard family situations, I am choosing to have no alcohol (wine) for today. Will take a long walk in the sunshine and have my NA 0.0 on hand for HH.
May you find your best resolve for your situation today.

Today I drove past the grocery store and really wanted to stop and get a bottle of wine but I'm trying to stick with my Lent commitment so I didn't do it. (I gave up wine only so I could've gotten beer but decided to just go home)7 -

Tuesday I stopped myself from going out and buying beer and had 2 Lagunitas IPNAs instead. Wed. had to go get some other groceries and "my" beer was on clearance so I grabbed a 12 pack. Had beer that night and last night. Haven't decided yet what is in store for this evening so not posting yet for today.3 -

Two glasses of wine and a Sambuca last night. Had I stuck to one glass of wine, I would have still been under my calorie goals. I need to get better about tracking my food during the day instead of the day after- I probably would have made a different choice. Back at it again.5

Had a tremendously long week helping family plus two days of volunteer work. I am very grateful for having the time to help but I am spent!!
I didn’t reach my goal for AF days. I am super tired and need better sleep. Thankfully I have the weekend to myself to reset.
Worth a mention - the servings of wine I had were much less than in prior weeks/months which I am taking for LA progress.

8 days AF and feeling the effects of better/longer sleep, so naturally, I've opened a bottle of wine tonight to enjoy with a late dinner. No grand compulsion, I just want to. We'll see what's left in the morning.
Is "Spring Forward" some kind of joke ?? Snow in the forecast tomorrow...❄️❄️❄️🥶 Don't forget to get up at 2 am to set your clocks ahead !! My ex used to DO that. There are reasons they become ex !!4 -
Only one glass of wine last night. Progress!
@forestdweller1 waking up at 2:00am, on purpose, to set the clocks- that’s some anal-retentive crap right there!3 -
Goals for March
Mostly Dry (no more than 4 days)
Possible ExceptionsFirst week is a killer
3/4 - Dinner Out
3/5 - Dinner Out (may not go)
3/8 - Fashion Show
TBD
Goal AF = 27+
Current Streak - AF = 2
Longest Streak 2024 - AF = 16
Glad that first week of March is over.
I resonate with so much written here over the past few days. I knew the first week of March would be full of temptation, and even on the days when I wasn't out, that habit of pouring that glass once I got home from work returned.
I don't have many outside influences this week, so I'm driven to be much better than I was in week 1.
I received some great news yesterday that should motivate me to take care of ME!
My son asked me to join him and family at the car dealership as he was buying a new car today and I just happened to have the title to his old car. As soon as I got there, Julian, my 4 year old grandson said, G-Ma, I’m going to be a big brother! I was so surprised. I started dancing (yes, in the dealership) and then the tears of joy came. I never thought this day would come. When my DIL had Julian she went back to the hospital for emergency surgery as she was bleeding internally. I thought that incident had put so much fear that having another child just wouldn’t come to fruition! But it did and I’m over the moon…. AND…icing….. the baby will be due around the first week of November. My birthday is November 6, how cool would that be???

Did some gardening which always lifts my spirits.
@lmlmrn your herbs in your garden sound wonderful!
@itladyee A big congratulations to you! A new grand baby on the way is the most beautiful news.
Will enjoy a NA 0.0 beer tonight and watch some of the Academy Awards and get to bed early. Want to be refreshed for the gym tomorrow morning as I try to get back to a routine around exercise and more AF days this week.

Thank you @Womona about the suggestion with the warm milk. I don't tolerate dairy well..so
I went out for pizza and drank 2 beers just for the sleepy properties. Went home and was able to sleep for 3 wonderful hours. Then last night I could not sleep. Still up watching TV at 3am, then tried to sleep and may or my not slept a bit but was up at 6am then stayed up until noon. After church I rested for 2 hours and I hope tonight I can sleep. I reached out to my Dr. for suggestions.
I am excited my herbs are sprouting so soon!
@forestdweller1 congrats on the leaving the bottle 1/2 full and walking away. well done.2 -
Hoping for a better week starting today. Goal this week is to be AF for 4 days...

Hey all!
March 11th. NO DRINKS since that one shot Friday on March 1st.
Also, NO CIGARETTES! NO TAKEOUT! I’ve eaten healthy and worked out for the last 11 days.
I have to admit there have been days where the stress toppled over and the first thing, I wanted was a drink. Instead, I went down to the basement and worked out and let me tell you the calories I burned were crazy and my mind was clear after.
My husband and I took the kids to Dave & Buster’s yesterday, and I don't do well in crowds at all. IT WAS PACKED. Even though I thought about grabbing a drink and my husband would DD I didn't do it. I stayed strong to my goal of 30 days. Also smelling the delicious bad food they had made me want to pig out but I didn't. We grabbed the kids their treat of fast food and went home and had grilled Caesar salad wraps.
I don’t know what triggered in my mind that is making this easier than any other time, but I pray and hope it stays. I don’t want to be perfect, but I want to know I have the strength to at least try.
Idk if this helps anyone else but I sat down and really thought about why I was drinking and what the outcome was. I would drink because of stress and then put myself in more stressful situations. I couldn’t do it anymore.

Planted more seeds with my grandchildren yesterday. It was a lot of fun and also gave their parents a few hours break on a Sunday afternoon.
Not AF last night - tried an awful tasting dark NA 0.0 Guinness and switched to a 6 1/2 oz. pour of good white wine around 8:00 pm. I probably should have just got in bed at that point, but with the new time change I wasn’t able to do an early to bed as I hoped.
Desire is get back to my weekly goal and make the next 3 days AF days until Thursday. Each day is a new beginning for us!
4 -
@dmally1 thanks for giving us a glimpse into your success! You are doing fantastic. I think it does help to look at the whys of why we drink or overeat to help us find the best solutions. I agree for me too, overdrinking causes much more stress than without it! Finding sustainable goals does help.3

I've just been reading through the posts here and decided I would like to join in. You're all very inspiring and it would be great to be a part of this lively and friendly bunch.
I know some of March is past already, but I'm hoping to make the rest of March AF since I've been hitting the wine pretty hard these past few months.
About a year and a half ago I quit drinking for months, but then a couple at Christmas, couple on Valetine's Day, so on and so on, and then it just grew to a lot again all last year. I'm not sure I can get to a point where I have just one or two, once I start I tend to keep going for the rest of the day/night. So I'm thinking this will be a permanent thing for me. I can stop for a few days, but have been having trouble stringing together more than 4 in a row lately.
So, with 21 days left in March, I think this will give me a good starting off point.
I'm looking forward to checking in tomorrow am.8 -
11 AF- I'm a bit frustrated because I've cut alcohol calories and I made some food swaps to lower my calorie intake, but I have actually gained 3 pounds as a result.5

Hello everyone
I was finally able to sleep last night!.
RANT HERE
Contacted dr. about insomnia....the response. Oh only 2% of those taking that med have insomnia and you have been taking it for almost 3 weeks and it started so we can't help you. Suggested I either stop the meds for 2-3 weeks to see if I have relief or just quit them altogether with no offer of a sub??? WTF. I have a history with having reactions to new drugs going back almost 20 years. Some side effects don't show up for months. It seems this office, since I can't pay for 'infusions' at $550 (after $1300 initial start up) every other month for the rest of my life, is not interested in really treating me. This is a specialist FGS.
Ok my rant is over
I think I will be looking for a new dr. but they are so slim in this area.
I did have 1/2 glass of wine tonight just to sip with dinner. took me over an hour to finish it.
we have not been to the YMCA for the past 5 days DH has been fighting off a cold and he can't be sick when we fly out on Wednesday for my mom's 90th b/d.
@dmally1 congrats on your will power!6 -
