What nobody tells you about losing weight

LOL ... but, right!?! *no* joke on that score!! What did you choose?
Hi fat, or low fat?
High protein, or low protein?
Carnivore, or Vegan?
Snacks every 2 hours, or Time Restricted Eating?
Mediterranean, or Pescatarian?
I can't even think of the other choices right now. lol
Oh, track WW points, carbs, fibers, protein grabs, ounces of water, mg of sodium, something else?
There are experts that says that the key to weightloss is CICO (Calories in Calories Out) but there are also experts (I think the most famous now is Dr Jason Fung) that says that it is not feasible because our body will get used to the calorie deficit and then cancel it out eventually. He recommends intermittent fasting instead.
I tried the 16/8 intermittent fasting but I couldn't do it. While others reported higher energy levels, more focus and whatnot. My body started shaking due to low blood sugar at around the 12-hour mark. I couldn't focus on doing anything.
My diet at the current moment is protein (50%), carbs (30%) and Fats (20%) and at about 500 caloric deficit (I do not track religiously though). More natural food and less processed food. I didn't follow any specific diet such as keto, carnivore etc.
I eat about 3 times a day. (Again some experts says to eat 5-6 times but some experts say our bodies are not meant to be eating so many times a day. ) hahaha
I walk at least 5000 steps 4 times a week. Light resistance training 3 times a week.
Started at about 88kg in April. Now I am at 81kg. I used to have many health-related problems such as heat rash, heartburn, mild hypertension and snoring. After changing my diet, surprisingly most of it is gone. My BP has gone down from 145 to 130.
Honestly, I just follow the advice that I am comfortable with. Things that I know I can do long-term and on a consistent basis. I know I cannot avoid carbs because I am Asian. I need my rice and noodles. lol
Ultimately, I just try to listen to my body because everybody is built different.
Inspiring ! Congratulations, and good luck. I laughed with all the experts' competing advice. It really is amazing, the opposite advices you get. BTW, just to throw more 'advice' into the mix ;-), I read recently that 16:8 or 14:10 IF was not recommended other than as a short-term 'reboot', as it could have negative cardiovascular outcomes after awhile. But Circadian 12:12 Time Restricted Eating IF was recommended .

Eat this, avoid that, exercise this way, not that way, and Dr. Who, what, when, and where to include why videos by the thousands. It can be an information overload. Additionally, we must be honest with ourselves about why we want to gain or lose fat or muscle, to improve or reduce health implications. Last is our willpower, financial ability, and current abilities according to our health and physical level. For myself, I found a diet using a TDEE calculator and followed a cutting diet. It works for me, and that is the key. We all have our likes and dislikes regarding food or exercise, but also our current level of physical fitness. Find something you can do or like and exploit it! For exercise, whether it is walking, swimming, or weight lifting, find something you like and exploit. Same with dieting or calorie deficit diet, find recipes or make stuff you like and fit it in your macros or calorie limits. I myself love my sweet iced tea; I reduced the sugar to an acceptable level for my taste and removed soda from my diet. Also, I no longer use the riding mower, and I push mow my lawn when it is cool enough (my lawn is just .57 acre), lol. I like to walk, but it is very hot and humid where I live, so I try to wait until about dusk when I can walk when it is cooler, but I also walk where there is shade. There are many other examples that I used; just find your own and exploit them.10

Some things for me ..
1. My tailbone sticks out and becomes sore!
2. That some of the things I thought would happen after wt loss haven’t happened like self worth increasing. Or others.
3. Depression has improved though to the point of not needing the medicine.
4. My thinking is clearer…energy level definitely improved.
I so agree that this journey is for a life time..I also think the mind has be brought in to the diet. I have a work book that I work in every day and probing questions to answer. Journaling is key ..,and affirmations to say each day… there are so many negative thoughts going through my mind that need confronting…self discovery. “Our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalms 139… Another quote13 -

I started doing CrossFit in March and worked my butt off for two months. I didn’t weigh myself because I wanted to give myself a reward in May at my dr. Appointment. I literally thought I had lost 40-50 lbs as if I was a 25 year old… I got on the scale and it was the exact weight I had started at. SERIOUSLY DELUSIONAL I could not believe it. Sadly i cried about it. But I used it to make the necessary changes and get serious about my diet. I weigh myself multiple times per week now lol13

I am very interested in the workbook. I think I'm going to try to saturate myself with positivity and see if that doesn't help! I love that verse in Psalms! I find your story so inspiring!1 -
I've been getting utterly weird reactions from people, or should I say MEN.
- Yesterday I was wearing a skirt & tank top, instead of my usual outfit (jeans or yoga pants + t-shirt). Ran into a middle-aged male neighbor who has never once said hi to me in the years we've both lived here. He was downright EFFUSIVE: "Oh hiiiii, how are you doing? Have a great day!" 🙄 (Yes, the outfit showed off my newish curves.)
- A guy in my extended family (he's in his 90s and not related to me): "Wow, you keep losing weight! You are getting gorgeous!" He's been commenting in this fashion every time he sees me, for months now. Lately he's also been letting his hands linger a little longer around my waist and hips when I give him a hug 🙄
- Conversation with another neighbor I ran into just now: "Are you losing weight?" - "Yes." - "Why?" - (pause) "How do you want me to answer that? Because I want to." - "Yeah but do you have any special technique?" 🙄 (I'm guessing he wanted to know what drug I'm using. I'm not taking anything. What kind of question is that anyway, "why?"... ugh, so people like you can ask me dumb questions, obviously.)

@takinitalloff you gotta watch the old ones. As an older teen, I used to take music lessons from a man well into his 80’s. He was very handsy, and I finally told him to stop it.
His wife was an apple cheeked silver haired granny who would rock and knit during my lessons.
They had a life size oil painting of a gorgeous woman doing a burlesque ostrich feather fan dance.
As a teen, it was a year before I even made the connection. The painting was his wife! I guess he was always handsy with the women, lol.
I guess people assume everyone’s on “the shot”. 🤦🏻♀️ your neighbor included.
I’m glad for you people are noticing, even if, like you sound you might, wanna smack some of em for you.5 -
@springlering62 Haha I can just picture you smacking some sense into these guys' heads That's sweet that your teacher and his wife had a painting of her hot younger self. Not so sweet that he would be handsy with a teenager, ewww. I don't know what goes on in people's heads that they would think there's a world where that is ok.
I've never really had guys leering over me before so this is a new experience for me, but yeah if someone decides to actually cross the boundaries I will definitely set them straight! So far I just roll my eyes at them (more or less visibly, depending on the situation).6 -
Clothing size is really a big issue. Can't afford to buy new stuff now (after 20 kg loss) and then repeat in a few months when reach a lower wt goal...so tightening my belt and pants upper edges are like awkwardly scrunched up under the belt...
Yes, people's reactions are all over the place! "Oh you lost so much but you need to lose much more!"..."You are still fat"..."You lost too much, eat some more"...???8 -
Dontkillbill1509 wrote: »The most surprising thing I found that was negative ... My identity was the "big guy" and now its just Bill looking a little more jacked than a few months ago.. I am retired now so my identity is tied to being alive and well
THIS! I was a powerlifter. I was also always the big guy. I never felt like I tried to be intimidating, but I apparently was to some people. It was a form of respect I guess even though that was never the intension. Now I'm starting to get called "skinny", which I appreciate in some ways, but can be kind of irritating as well because I still don't see myself that way.6 -

For clothes, consider charity or resale shops.
Also, those comments, yikes! Not nice!
Is be tempted to "I'm working on becoming healthier and thinner. Are you working on becoming kinder?" . . . or similar.
I'm so sorry people are treating you like that!4 -
How big your cheshire cat smile gets, and the weird looks you get from the person at the till wondering why you look so happy buying a new t-shirt, when you are buying a new t-shirt in a shop and fit in a size that surprises you.11

Could you afford to pop down to your local charity/second hand shop? You don’t need stuff to be in amazing condition cause you’ll shrink out of it in a couple of weeks or months. Even $20 could get you two pairs of jeans or pants that actually fit and a top or two (sometimes more if they are having a sale).
It’s nice not to feel so frumpy in stuff that’s wildly too big7 -

Mine is the opposite, for months, I was loosing weight in the sale, and I was tightening my belt a bit more, but the pants fit the same. It was weird.4 -
- it getting harder and harder to find pants in a correct size (very very short and 24in waist means my butt is now shopping in the kids section lol)
- having almost no period is pretty cool though, last one was so light i only needed period products for the first day!
- having super clear skin! it's incredible how much my skin has cleared up!
- nails don't grow as fast. (bummer)6 -

Envious of the first one, weight makes no difference in my case!
The second one is a sign of calorie restriction. Probably will speed up again after the weight-loss fase is over and you transition to maintenance.3 -
I lost over 100 Pounds. I'm still overweight but my Nutritionist wants me to stay that way. She says that at my age (74) it's a little safer to have that extra padding.
That's the good news. The bad news is that I waited until I was 66 to start losing. My Skin isn't and wasn't flexible enough to handle the loss. So I now have grotesque "Bats Arms" and sags all up and down my Body.

Stopping eating too much/the wrong things is a bit like giving up smoking. There are three kinds of giving it up and I have been in all 3. 1) People tell you you should ( doomed to fail fast ). 2) You decide you would quite like to give it up ( Doomed to fail eventually ). 3) You have a genuine reason to give it up ( good chance of sustaining ).
Whether your reason is something like a medical intervention ( in my case diabetes ) or a realisation that you can no longer do what you enjoy you really need to find a reason.
My Doctor asked me if I had a good pension. I said yes. She told me to either change my lifestyle or cash it in and spend it now because I would not live long enough to enjoy it otherwise. That was my reason and has driven me to go from 242 pounds to 182 pounds in 4 months. Still a way to go but the reason is strong enough to take away my chance of giving up.
Good luck everyone16 -

Netta, truly wonderful and life changing. I started at 56. A little Lycra and nobody except you knows or cares. It’s not like I’m butt naked parading it to all and sundry. 😅14 -

Can confirm!
Lycra/Spandex is wonderful stuff.
I love leggings that are high waisted and hold in the paninis (which is slowly decreasing- I suspect in part because of the near constant light compression)
I also recommend some sleeves meant for uv/sunburn protection. Amazon has a wide range of them. Search for “cool shawl arm covers” or “arm sleeves” or anti-sun cooling arm sleeves”
They’re inexpensive and do an excellent job of covering up the bingo wings.
And they really do help prevent sunburn.
Handy on a cool day for adding a little warmth without bulk, too.4 -
@MargaretYakoda i don’t know whether that was an accidental spellchecker delight or a Margaret-ism, but either way you made my day!7

All good ideas statements and points! This is a life style change not a diet!
I found my hip bones/ ribs once and I will find them again, but due to injuries it's a slow process! almost 25 lbs down and managed to keep off!8 -
New sweat pants I brought to start my journey now falling off me when I stand up. New kit ordered not so good for the bank balance but great for moral.8

“Bingo wings”?
Not my phrase. It’s what I’ve heard those flappy hanging upper arm flaps called for decades.
I do love it, though. It’s so expressive.
It’s common enough to be in a few dictionaries.
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/bingy
Long long ago I took some exercise classes where the instructor called them that, and advised laying on your back and doing a sort of hatchet chop movement with a light weight (three pounds tops) to firm up the triceps. But of course that’s not gonna do much for the skin.
Anyway. I really do love those “shawl” thingies. They lightly compress, and do an amazing job of covering them up.
