The annual Atlanta 4th of July race got cancelled early due to the heat.

Happy Independence Day to all us Yanks! Let Freedom Ring but keep those M-80's in your own yard please, neighbors. Or better yet, since we are on the way to high temps and low humidity, just don't light them off.
Margaret - again, thanks for sharing your insights into health. Good to hear the new docs are learning more about the power of a healthy gut. Our little bugs love all kinds of fiber and ferments, don't they?
Barbara - I'd forgotten about your long beautiful hair - the gym shower sounds like the perfect solution. I'm starting to get a better picture of your water system - cistern fed by a stream. Again, crossing fingers the new pump and the associated plumbing gets fixed soon and you are back in business.
As an aside, we had the opposite problem several years ago - the pump in our septic tank went out. This is kinda long and TMI about engineered septic systems, so feel free to skip. Our septic system has 3 tanks in a line attached by pipes that drain into each other, the final one is 99.99% water which is then pumped in perforated pipes - uphill at my house! into a large drain field array. (The solids settle out in the first or second tank, I forget which one - this is the one the septic pumping guy empties every 5 years or so, depending on how many people in the household.) This is normal in my area where the subsoil is clay and water can't leach down. Several years ago, we had a slight earthquake and that last tank sprung a leak since seal around the top of the tank somehow cracked due to the vibration - this was in the winter when the water table was high. Groundwater gushed into the tank! So the poor pump wore out from the 24/7 pumping. Repair was impossible with the water table that high, so DH dropped a sump pump into that tank and drained the water off onto the back of the property. I'm sure we violated several county codes, but that was the only alternative we could come up with, otherwise no showers/laundry/dishwashing/toilets - anything that would put water into the septic system. It had to be pumped or our back yard near the house would have been swamped. Luckily the rain kept everything diluted and there was no smell or other indication of this temporary "fix".
Eventually the water table fell, the septic repair guy came out, resealed the tank and installed a new pump. I ran across that sump pump in the shop the other day. Worth hanging onto. Adventures in suburbia.
Annie - very glad things have settled down, in a way, regarding your dad. At this stage, you never know what challenges you'll meet with him each day, but they don't seem insurmountable. Were you able to get the title to his car signed and taken care of?
Heather - good to hear the visit with John's old friend went well.
Vicki - glad you avoided flooding and tornadoes. The 100 degree temps have to be tough. Don't blame you one bit for wanting autumn to get here.
Tracey - Zoom and the Diabetes Prevention Class.... I've been wanting to comment about last Monday's class, but it took me until this morning to pull my thoughts together. I don't like this Zoom method of teaching. I could tell we were bored.
The way it is now, Coach Melanie just goes over the pre-determined lesson plan and tries to involve us like this: "how can we spruce up water to make it more palatable?" Her suggestions - add a slice of lemon. Add ice. One person piped up "add electrolytes" but the look on the faces on the rest of us was telling. I really miss the interaction students get before and after class. Last Monday's class was a glimpse of what's to come....it was like being at a WW meeting 25 years ago, lol.
I know she's getting paid to strictly follow the lesson plan and keep the class at one hour or under. I'm still picking up some good tips. And folks who are brand new to weight loss (not WW veterans, lol) are likely finding her teaching helpful.
Farmer's Walk - Last week, in addition to doing my stretching/bridging in the morning, I've added several sessions of "Farmer's Walk" - Farmer's Carry? throughout the day. Carrying an 8# dumbbell in each hand and walking one lap throughout my house, paying attention to good posture and the core muscles. Add that to all of the full watering cans I have been toting around, I can tell it's making a positive difference.
It's starting to warm up, going to be 85 today. I'm making the hens some cool treats for their afternoon snack and have ice cubes ready for their water dish.
Stiff breeze blowing and I've had to unfurl the flag twice already.
Stay cool, ladies.

There are some towns(my home town included) that canceled or postponed their big fire works shows for tonight. I suggested they postpone until Christmas
They are all illegal here except for the city shows but that doesn't slow the neighbors down at all. They have been shooting them off for over a month. I will be up until 2-3 most likely, just watching to make sure the trees over our back fence don't catch fire. Juniper and Eucalyptus are right against and over our fence-super flammable.

Thanks to Machka, Terri, Barbara, Lanette, Ginny and Tracey and the rest of our community for your concern about my dad. Today I have to sneak in a shower when he is occupied. I thought I could do it yesterday while he was out to lunch, but that fell through.
Tracey right now my favorites are Toni Anderson, Laura Griffin, Lisa Regan and Allison Brennan. I bought two Maranda Collins to try. I like romance thrillers with a strong female lead, but I read other stuff just to mix it up.
And I was thinking of temping for you too! It's a great way to explore jobs.
Rebecca you go, girl! Excellent fresh start!
Heather so glad voting went well.
Barbara so the water adventure continues. Sorry about the financial blow. These expenses come out of nowhere.
Yesterday I had to send my Dad back upstairs to change his clothes. My mom used to do that all the time. I don't worry about the black socks, but the plaid shorts with slippers were a bit much for a lunch date.
Have a lovely day! Happy fourth for those who celebrate! And may you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!
Annie in Delaware
Thanks Annie! Today was a pickled beet to start my digestion, then a shrimp salad kit (1/3 of package) with a big tomato chopped, 5 jumbo shrimp and a sprinkling of bleu cheese crumbles. Next meal is rice and smoked salmon with honey drizzle. Later will be a cup of coffee and creamer plus a piece of sugar free chocolate.💖✌

Great job food logging. I just started logging food again, too. Today is day 3 for me. Cooking for husband, mother and now sister I got carried away creating all kinds of delicious recipes over these past 3 months! Feels good to balance things out again.
Barbara:
Way to Go with Better Bones and Balance! You’re inspiring me to re-start my gentle yoga home workouts (must awaken extra early while Mom is still sleeping to fit this in!).
Terri:
Enjoy your guests tomorrow. So nice to reunite after 30 years - a lot to catch up on!
Heather UK:
Great that you walked to voting and glad to hear all you met were cheerful! Enjoy your day!
Anne in DE: Hope you got your shower in! I have similar challenge planning my showers as caregiver to my Mom. But feels like a wonderful luxury once I get in that shower!
Macula: Love the 7 Types of Rest!
Hugs to all and loving this group! Thanks for being here ❤️😊🙏🏼

Its definitely a reality check huh? I think with all my beautiful food combinations I was probably eating 2000+ calories daily. My husband likes to fix his own meals for the most part, I am usually only prepping 3 or 4 meals out of the week. Which is great as I like to just be having coffee to end my eating window at 5 to 6 pm. I don't have any problem playing chef for him. Balance is a good word to what I'm feeling.👍🏼💖

Pip - How could you resist not getting in the water with Yogi? Maybe you did! I'd at least be standing in it.
Debbie - I know, people go crazy with these fireworks. Hope your plants stay safe. I have otherwise lovely neighbors a few doors down that are having a family BBQ and normally have a small aerial display every year. Hope they curtail that this year.
Flea - you are having a nice long vacation. Love the photo of you and the step grands. Nice to be able to visit family and catch up on the news. Keep having fun! (You look great by the way.)
Ben Bickman: I'm a big fan of Dr. Ben Bickman, who wrote "Why We Get Sick" which addresses insulin resistance, and the roles carbs, fat and protein play in diabetes and even weight loss. I've been following his lead in cutting out sugar and "white" carbs - rice, flour, potatoes, pasta, etc.
He has another book coming out next week: "How Not to Get Sick." He made a video reviewing the book, which has a different format than his first book. It looks pretty good - I had plenty of Amazon points to spend, so ordered it. Here's a link if anyone is interested: 21 minutes.

Today’s gratitude: Michele, Lisa and whoever else suggested keeping some grapes in the freezer. Thank you!
90 degrees here is unusual and too hot for me to do anything but sit by the window and catch up from June. Like Kim, we have no A/C except the ocean breeze bringing in the fog. Had to move the lettuce and daphne into the shade, they were wilting, as was I.
Belated welcome @Blueyedgirl69 in Oregon. Survival camp and Pacific Crest Trail, I am in awe of you!
Belated welcome @sista67 Susan in NH. Looking forward to getting to know you too!
Belated welcome @GoodGollieMissMollie Mollie in west TN. Logging every bite, lick or sip is indeed something of which to be proud. Did your head injury result in a tbi? Tough new normal. Whooshing you joy.
Kylia ditto what Ginny said about your SIL’s surgery. Speaking of kittens, thanks for sharing the pics of yours! Would your vet like to relocate to the Oregon Coast?
Carol has your ortho prescribed any PT to help prepare you for the knee surgery? Chrome deleted your passwords, bone on bone knee, DH’s health issues and the difficulty of getting appointments with healthcare professionals, no wonder you are grinding your teeth. Have no experience with that supplement, can only offer (gentle hugs held extra long).
Beth “…developing good word discernment without lip reading …” Bravissima. Had to laugh at the quite annoying tv sounds, every rose has its thorns. ((hugs)) and prayers for your mom getting into a more appropriate facility soon.
Rita what you said about logging to keep honest. We’re learning a line dance to the song “One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor” and every time I hear the last verse I think of you.
https://youtu.be/46XaIjX5afA?t=161
Heather please tell me trim work/baseboards are included in any flooring estimates? love the garden pic. How many homes share it? your miracle basil and thanks for the thinning tip. Love the image of your dancing microbiome and how joyfully you return to household tasks. Brava for walking the distance and hurrah for micro socializing!
Debbie at 4’11” I was 95 throughout high school (1968) and into college (1972) . Crept up to 125 when we married (1987), then ballooned up to 165 when we moved to Idaho and fostered the nephews (1997). Joined mfp, took off 20 lbs and there I stuck. Flirted with the 120s last year but currently hovering around 133. Goal is 115 as I’ve lost an inch, but I’m just so thankful not to be 165 any more. You are so right about fireworks and eucalyptus. Time for alternative independence day displays imho.
Tracey with honors! VERY well done!
Barbie sorry the chemo is being so hard on Jake, but love how Annie stays by his side. Wow what thoughtful guests!
Meg I, too, miss the news feed. It was one way of connecting with gals who no longer post to this thread.
Lanette I’m older and have never that an A1C test, maybe ‘cuz fasting glucose has been in the 80-90 range the past 3 years. BUT I have all the markers of metabolic syndrome you mentioned. Hmm. Septic system pumps UP hill? SMH. Thanks for the reminder it’s likely past time to have ours pumped out again.
Margaret “…gently nourish your body back to optimal health” Love this approach. So happy for your positive results from eliminating gluten and ultra processed foods. No getting up to use the bathroom? Bravissima!
Lisa loved your story about Corey and the tree. Hard as it is to do, waiting for our guys to realize what we already know but haven’t said, well worth it. And oh the expression on Egg’s face back on page 53 in June. Did the gastro say the rX was fixed term or lifetime?
Annie so glad to hear you’ve been able to ride again AND walk miles with your Dad. Well done! Plaid shorts and slippers, glad you could find the humor and channel your Mom to send him back upstairs to change.
Michele would you share the name of/link to the 100 calorie 10g protein bars on Amazon? Congrats on the survival of your plants!
Ginny I admire your reaction to the retirement place hiccup.
@mcmillonmail Monique would you remind me what your recipe project is? Be sure to bookmark the July thread, we’d miss you!
Rebecca sounds like a good plan! You can do it!
Machka love the pic of your summer bathtub but wow am I impressed you were able to maintain all your gorgeous hair in a dishpan with a shower bag rinse. Pioneer spirit! I’m with you about password managers, I keep a little handwritten address book. ;}
Jean in NJ good luck with the gentle yoga. It always made me feel better… after I did it
Flea what an inspiring attitude, love the smiles!!!
Vicki tornadoes are so scary. Nephews texted me videos of the ones near them in Iowa last month. Even scarier is the fact they stood outside to video the storms! SMH.
Pip just love the Yogi in the water pics. Smooch that pooch!
Joe just walked in and announced “The heat wave is over!” He’s right, the breeze is back, there’s fog on the horizon and the temp dropped 15 degrees. Thank you ladies for keeping me cool while I got caught up. Tomorrow will play in the garden and go into town to do laundry.
Later, lighter, lovelies!

Lanette Agreed with Ben Bickman. Loved his take on fermented foods. Microbes eat the sugars and leave the good stuff for us. Some of those microbes are also good for us. Lifestyle is what got us into our metabolic problems and changing lifestyle will get us out. I will add that reaching for the pill is not the long term answer. Unfortunately reaching for the pill comes with unwanted side effects.
Thanks for sharing Lanette...I am just encouraged that there are voices out there giving alternatives to finding the way back to health that are based in good nutrition and positive lifestyle changes. Also addressing the emotional pieces too. I still think of that title Face your Stuff or Stuff your Face.
It does take patience to make major changes. Some progress comes quickly and sometimes there are set backs because of life. As more knowledge if obtained in this field I can always change my mind and also judge how the changes work for me.
Staying up a bit later tonight because fireworks are still going off. Still time to start to get ready...

Lisa and Machka - I am looking at placement agencies today. I actually worked for Kelly Services when I first moved here I don’t know why I didn’t think of it.
Heather - I hope you have a wonderful visit with John’s sister.
It’s so nice to read about your active days again.
Barbara - How long do they think it will take to get your water running again?
I’ve never heard that song before it’s cute. I can see why the last verse reminds you of Rita. Me too! I liked the disclaimer at the end of the video too.
Machka - you are more adventurous than me, I want showers and indoor plumbing when I travel.
Maybe I need to grab a JD Robb book.
Margaret - I’m impressed with the changes you are seeing with your dietary changes. I am too fussy of an eater to change my menu that much I think.
Annie - I am making note of some of those authors. I am looking for new ones.
Barbie - Gratitude through suffering.
Lanette - I really think a lot is missed by not having in person classes, meetings all of it. I firmly believe we don’t have a sense of community anymore because so much is done online and that chit chat and getting to know one another is lost.
Flea - what a wonderful picture. Enjoy!
Pip - yogi looks quite happy.
I didn’t do much at all today. I didn’t even get dressed. I did do a bit of scrapbooking this evening.
Our power went off this evening, animal interference according to the website. I had already started to run my bath and we have gas heat so I still took my bath. I just used little battery lights. I may have to put those in there more often. I would put them a little neater maybe so they could just stay in there.
