OCTOBER 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the SEPTEMBER 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10922796/september-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until OCTOBER 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

'sneasy' - Slow Not Easy
'scrappy' - mix of Slow and Crappy

180 for Oct.
2024 running the year the annual goal. 440 to go. Want this wrapped up by Dec 19th when I fly out.8 -
Thanks for setting this up @AlphaHowls ! I'm not really sure how it got to be Oct so quickly! I'm going to try for 80 miles. If I can keep up with my plan, I'm sure I can make it, even though you can't see a whole month in advance, I know it will be more than Sept.4
-
Tomorrow is oct 1 and I have no plan for the month. I'll figure it out and post a goal asap. Right now the plan is to run. Several times, at different paces and distances. It's not much to go on.5
-
So my plan to up kilometres to 200 has failed in the last two months - my body just isn’t happy with the extra mileage (mixed metrics just for you @tarun_yadavA). Instead, I’m ramping up the cross training- I’ve restarted Pilates after a 20-year hiatus 😂, and am recommitting to a daily 15 minute or more yoga practice.
School holidays here at the moment, playing havoc with the running (and Pilates) but am on taper anyway for my half this Sunday and am desperately trying to sort my hips/back out before then. Completing is not the issue, but I want to avoid the fallout in the days following - my last longer runs have resulted in a very tight lower back for two days.
Bought new shoes as I suspected my worn out Brooks (all three pairs) were a contributing factor. However, the latest Brooks Ghosts (16) are very different and nothing like previous models. As for Brooks 15s, there isn’t a single pair left in my size in New Zealand or Australia!
The guy at the shoe store put me in a new Hoka, which I really like, but they’re not a wide enough fit and I’m unsure if they make a wide in this model. I need to go back to the store. They’re fine for give or 10k, but would give me grief in a half. I guess I’ll be running in my least worn pair of Ghosts on Sunday.
TL:DR October will be what it is.
Congrats again @laurz9191, I’m so stoked you had a good race and smashed your PB. Awesome stuff.9 -
Morning all.
Got in 5K (switching to kilometres just for you @ContraryMaryMary !) at 08"14 minutes per mile.
Hehe7 -
Thanks for setting up October @AlphaHowls! Continuing to keep your mother and you in my prayers.
Today’s my one year anniversary since joining this group. I went back to the October 2023 thread and reread the early entries with the welcoming comments from so many of you: @AlphaHowls @chris_in_cal @quilteryoyo @Scott6255 @SummerSkier @kgirlhart @tarun_yadavA @Teresa502 @Mari33a @ContraryMaryMary and @Laurz9191
Thanks to all of you for your support this past year. I’ve run 5 races (with one more to go) in 2024 which I would have never done had I not been encouraged by you all. You guys and this group are great!!
I’ll stick to the 8K training schedule our running group has and will follow the rest days as suggested in the plan. Total miles for October will be 40.5 miles.9 -
Thanks for setting us up for October @AlphaHowls!
I still don't know if I will be racing in 3 weeks, so will just run when I can, sprinkle in some speed work now and then, and just see what happens.5 -

Awww you're welcome @daria0919
Glad you joined our little global running friends group7 -
@ContraryMaryMary So sorry that you are having back issues. Listening to our bodies over our minds is hard sometimes, but you are doing great. I hope you enjoy your half this weekend and that your shoes hold up for you.
@tarun_yadavA ! Great running.
Happy one year @daria0919 ! I am so glad that you decided to join this group. You are doing so well with your running and are a great encouragement to others as well.
Well, it's official. I am now one of the thousands of people in the county without running water. I used the last in the pipes this morning. It's a minor inconvenience relative to most around me, so I'm not complaining. It'll be an adventure and a nostalgic look back to my childhood days - I didn't have running water until I was a freshman in HS.8 -
@quilteryoyo oh no!!!! 😱2

Oct 1 – 4.46 miles
My goal for October will be 80 miles. I ran with a friend this morning who is coming back from a fall where she pulled her hamstrings in both legs. It was slow but we got to chat a lot! My electricity was restored Sunday evening and compared to all the devastation and destruction around me, it was just a minor nuisance.
Thanks for setting this up @AlphaHowls. With everything that you have going on, you continue to amaze me! Hang in there!
@quilteryoyo – So sorry about your and all of Greenville’s water troubles. I hope it is restored sooner than expected. I saw that your friend Michael Wardian finished his AT challenge. Amazing!
@Laurz9191 – Well done on your marathon and thanks for that great race report. I greatly appreciate your sharing it. The weather looks picture-perfect even though it was cold at the start. You did so well managing your pace!
Glad you are taking positive steps to get your tendon healed @daria0919. Let the healing begin!
I’m not happy with any of the new Brooks shoes either @ContraryMaryMary. I have a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 5s in wide and I like the fit of them. They are trail shoes though so I haven’t really run in them much.
6 -
@quilteryoyo very sorry about your water troubles. Helene took a lot of lives, property, and left a lot of destruction. I hope everyone gets their power and water restored sooner than later.
Just did a modest 5 TM miles after work today. I had to have something to put at the end of my ticker, so I just picked a random number.
7 -
Great running @Teresa502 . I'm glad you got your power back on Sunday. They are thinking they will get water flowing again by Friday, or maybe before. I have my fingers crossed (thumbs tucked) they will. I realized today that lack of water is really going to hamper cleaning efforts for people affected by the floods and mud. I didn't see that about Michael. Thanks for letting me know.
You did great on the TM @Scott6255 . Hang in there. I hope your brother has less pain today.5 -
1 Oct - Walked 0.65 miles - Ran 2.45 miles - Treadmill
I did the planned drill workouts today on the treadmill. I walked 0.25 miles at 3.8 mph, 3x(1/1 min at 4.5/4.0), 4 x (30 sec each at 7.0/4.0 mph), 4 x 6.0 for 30 sec, 9 x (1/1min at 5.0/4.0), 0.40 miles at 3.8 mph.
The running (wunning) avg pace was 12:56 min/mile. Overall, my Avg HR was 128 with a max of 151bpm.
I saw that the Brooks Adrenaline 23's are on sale, so I ordered a new pair today. You may want to check out their website if you wear Brooks.5 -
October Goal: 140 Miles
10/01: 6.06 miles
Thanks for setting us up @AlphaHowls . I'm going to set my goal at 140 miles this month.
I'm on the board October with 6 miles. It was a slow start, but overall a nice run.
5 -
Hi everyone!
I have been thinking about my goal for the month. Obviously after the marathon my first instinct is to sign up for a bunch of races, but luckily I am saved from myself this time by the lack of available races nearby - and I am already registered for the Hannover marathon in the spring.
I am on my way right now for a 3 week stay with the kids on one of the German North Sea islands. I should be able to get some running in, but I want to set my goal lower this month at 160km.8 -
Morning all
Got in 9 kilometres at 10"03 minutes per mile.
Just to throw out two different metrics in the same sentence 😂6 -

I’m setting my target at 50 miles/80.45k this month
2 Oct: 4.86mi/7.8k
Total 4.86mi/7.8k
Drizzle and rain and a chilly 13c, but despite that a lovely 50 minute run (my ‘easy run’ seems to be getting easier!).
Seeking advice from the collective… I’m giving some thought to getting a second hand treadmill (paying £100 or so) for when it’s really cold and wet… good idea or bad idea? There always seem to be a plentiful supply gathering dust in people’s homes… is it that people are faddy, or are injuries more common, or is it just too boring?
My only experience of using one was my one gym trip, as warmup, back when I hated running: I hated the gym too, and took up skiing instead (rowing machine in the off-season). I already have a rowing machine, so am I better off just using that for when I can’t get outside, or is having the option to use a treadmill useful?
2 -
Gee I blink and I'm 50 posts behind 🙄.
@quilteryoyo hope you get water back soon
@ everyone good wishes for the month
My goal this month is to avoid overtraining and injury. Sigh ain't no spring chicken anymore. Still aiming for 175km tho...run walk crawl 😁
7 -
Thanks for setting us up @AlphaHowls
I'm going to aim for 60 miles this month or try anyway.
01/10 3.84 miles
Total 3.84/60 miles
7 -
Was going to do my walk/run in neighborhood but…. Big one in the neighbor’s yard, so I think I’ll have to find someone else to get my 2 mile walk/run.
10 -
@quilteryoyo - Let me know how you like the new model of the Brooks Adreniline. My running friend S is trying to decide if she is going to keep the pair she just got or send them back. She said they were heavy and had too much cushioning.
@AmunahSki - If you have room for it, I would definitely check out the used treadmill and if ok purchase it. I hate using one but sometimes the weather is not conducive to run outside (icy, slick snow, extreme cold, etc.)
@daria0919 - Beautiful bear!5 -
@daria0919 what a lovely bear5

Checking in for this month
02.10 5.0km 39min 7:44/km - 3x3min, 5x0.5min intervals
5.01km
Did a run with intervals. Was rather cool and it rained a bit. Otherwise nice weather.6 -
October Goal: 140 Miles
10/01: 6.06 miles
10/02: 4.25 miles
10.31/140 miles completed for October
Today the plan called for a 4 mile run at half marathon pace. And I actually did what Hal told me to. It was a another nice, cool morning. I do enjoy this time of year. The run was good. I think if I want to set a PR next month, I will have to go a little faster than I did today, but I felt like I probably could go a little faster than I did.
@daria0919 I think I would have found another place to walk too. He is pretty, but how scary!
@quilteryoyo I hope you get your water back soon!
@scott6255 I know it won't be the same running the race without your brother, but maybe you could run it in his honor?
6 -
01/10 3.84 miles
02/10 4.05 miles
Total 7.89/60 miles
Lovely crisp weather for a run this evening5 -
Have fun @Laurz9191 . Did you hear about the 80 yo man, Peter Bartel, that finished the Berlin Marathon in last place, but he had run the inaugural race 50 years ago. That's pretty amazing.
hahaha @tarun_yadavA You did great in either system.
Nice run @AmunahSki . The treadmill is a personal preference. I have a treadmill and use it a lot when it's cold and rainy. I like the fact that it helps me pace my runs. I think the ones that are just expensive clothes racks are people who haven't been exercising and think getting a treadmill will get them moving, but if they weren't before, having it in the house is unlikely to change that habit. It can get boring on long runs, but I either watch TV or listen to music and it isn't bad - if I get the right TV show on. I like the one's that make me think - like game shows where I can try to answer the questions, or old classics.
Yikes @daria0919 . Be careful out there!
I will @Teresa502 . Has S ran in the older versions? I do think they are all a bit heavy and cushiony, but they are the one's the doctor's and Fleet Feet suggested for my over pronation and they have kept my legs injury free. But, if they changed them.....
Nice run @yirara .
Glad you had such a nice run @kgirlhart .
Nice @Mari33a .
