LESS Alcohol ~ OCTOBER 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

Happy first day of October and welcome to LESS alcohol
I will reinforce that our thread is for a variety of LESS alcohol paths.
Do you want to drink LESS? Completely stop or just cut back?
Cutting back can mean ONE less drink a day, week or month. Or deciding to drink on only weekends or at special occasions.
On the flip side, maybe you could use this nudge to finally get to that completely sober point and be all in-alcohol free.
I am starting the month out right and enjoying a cooler Florida Fall day.
Caught up on 54 posts last night and saw some awesome accomplishments. Congrats to those of you who have reached their goals. But mostly to those of you that have checked in and made success by having your own accountability.
Whichever goal you choose this month to have LESS alcohol in your life and whichever path you choose to make your way toward that goal we will be with you.

Everybody sounds so positive. I'm not liking today very much. I dumped out all my whiskey last night. So I'm not feeling that great this morning. And since it's the 1st of the month, I feel a lot of pressure to be AF today.
I know I need to quit because I haven't been very functional lately. But a drink sure would be nice right about now 😕 I'll post how I do later.6 -
Well...I already decided to cave. I don't know what I'm going to do? I know that I need to tough it out one day. But it's hard!5

Pressure is so dang confining. Surfergirl you did not start having a drink at mid night and that on its own is a huge WIN. if you want to stop the rolling snowball today you still might be able to.
Just because you have already had alcohol today does not define it as a total loss. Have some sparkling water, or a H00.
Get back to us and let us know how it is going. Don't wait until you have even more regret later or tomorrow.

Thanks @MissMay I'm just having problems getting started again. I had 21-day streak in August. Everything was going so well.
I believe my main problem is having alcohol in the house in the morning. I used to dump it out and then wait until 3 or 4 in the afternoon and just buy a pint.
I had my husband buy me a fifth (750 ml) this morning at 9 am when the store opened. I'm one of those who can't quit mid-stream. I need to just not give-in tomorrow morning. I will do this! And when I do, I can't ever touch it again!
I can't remember exactly who said it, but it was just a few days ago. She was approaching 30 days. And the wine devil was saying, "After 30 days you can have a drink. You've done well." That's how my mind works too.
I'll post again tomorrow. Hopefully with some good news 🙃4 -
Thanks @MissMay for your ongoing dedication to this LA group.
I’ll be here for October! Also my favorite month of the year. 🎃 I am still on vacation and then fly home on Friday. Stayed AF last night and slept great. Will repeat again today. Tomorrow I’ll plan have an umbrella drink or two before back to reality!
I greatly appreciate this thread that’s been so helpful to me since February 2023 when I decided to embrace less alcohol my life and adopted an intermittent approach to planned A days.
October will also be more about improving my health and wellness and increasing my AF days.
Workouts, cleaner eating and self-care without alcohol.

Print this out, put it on your booze cabinet or wherever you keep your alcohol. Visuals are worth it.

@MissMay ...Backatcha fellow Libra...and let's don't forget Jimmy Carter's 100th today...have some grits !! Today mine is polenta with jalapeno poppers.
I see that you recognized my passive aggressive streak. Sorry?? 🤦
Now is the start of a brand new month. And if we've "already caved", well, then, TODAY starts again at 3pm or 8pm or even later.

This might sound really odd but the tipping point for me was a massive all day hangover after a night of drinking heavy.
After I recovered, I looked at alcohol with total disgust. I know it may be harsh, but it did it for me...8 -
Thanks @chicbuc!1
-
Thanks @xbowhunter Fortunately or unfortunately (depending how you look at it), I don't get really bad hangovers. Just bad enough that I would like a little hair of the dog.
But you are right...I need to just do it! I had a very close friend in the 90's. And, of course, we liked our beer. The next day, I would head to the corner store to get a couple of 24's. She wouldn't get any. And would tell me, "you just have to tough it out!" She was right too!
By the way, I'm still very impressed with your AF attitude...Keep it up!3 -
SurferGirl1982 wrote: »@SparkSpringtime69 I can definitely relate to your situation. Yours is quite like mine. I think we both need a change in our lives. I can tell in your posts that you want to. And, we can both do it. It's just 31 days. And after those 31 days we will both feel so much better. I've done it before and it is amazing. We can do it!
I'm looking forward to the sober October, and I know we can knock this out! Even if we don't get all 31 days, some AF days are better than none.4 -
@SparkSpringtime69 I haven't been doing that great for the last month. But, you're right, we can do this...even if we don't get all of the 31 days. I've already blown it on Day 1. But, I'm pretty good at catching up!

Already planned on starting today with less alcohol, and came across this. thanks for putting it together!8

Hi everyone- first time poster here. In late August I decided to drink less alcohol, in conjunction with going on a new medication- and I've been feeling really good! Just thought this might be a way to keep track of me A vs. NA days (and I've been lurking all of September, it was starting to feel a little weird that I wasn't commenting!).
I'm basically aiming for around 40% alcohol free days, and to limit my intake on the days I do drink to 2-3 drinks. I find I feel so much better when I'm not drinking on work nights- and that I have a lot more energy to play with my two young kids...plus a lot more patience. Let's see how it goes! A part of me is afraid that now that I've publicly declared my intentions I'm going to slip up

Hellos to our L.A. participates and long time posters from threads before, Thank you for showing up day 1 of October to show your support and to chime in with vast knowledge of what has worked, and has been a struggle with getting alcohol under the control you need it to be at.
Huge welcomes to @NationalCapital , @duichaser , @lnort0618 , @Walela617 accountability and honesty with yourself will be a very dear friend for this journey you want to take. Everyone here is different, yet similar in goals and end results. Some will be here a short time to help with LESS alcohol to slim down and shed pounds. Others may be here for deeper personal alcohol struggles, and may cling to our threads for years (waving hand).
Whatever your reason we welcome you. All we ask is to be respectful of other people goals and their relationship with alcohol.
My day is already winding down so I can account for day 1 AF (Alcohol Free for you newbies)
My goals this month are very similar to how July, August and Sept played out. Long streaks of AF with chosen drinks when I want. My biggest struggle is a husband that is an alcoholic and refuses to stop drinking.
I cant change the world and don't want to try. I can only control my small little piece of world that I stand on.10 -

I don't comment much anymore but thank you for continuing this thread, Miss May. I think I was an original member back in 2017 or 18? It's been awhile. I have finally come to grips and am at peace with that fact that for ME, there is no such thing as moderation. My brain is not wired like a normal drinker that can take it or leave it. And this is OK. I don't have to try to figure out when to drink anymore. I just can't have it at all. It would be nice to have a glass of wine every once in a while, but in my experience, it leads to the entire bottle. I am envious of those of you that can drink when you feel like it then leave it alone. But just like smoking, I had to give all of that up too. I couldn't just do one every so often. Thankfully that was years ago. Good luck to all with their goals!9

Great plan, having NA beer at the ready!3 -

Welcome! Yeah, that declaring publicly thing… makes it real, which can be a little scary. However, it’s great that you already recognize that it all goes much better if you don’t imbibe during the week. I’m trying to get to that point!3 -
If I missed anyone, my apologies! Welcome all newbies, and so great to see people from past threads on here.
So I’m doing “soberish Octoberish”. Less Alcohol wine is really working for me when I’m home after work. I held off for a long time tonight until the wine devil got me. At least the LA wine still counts as less than one standard drink, so I’ll take the win. But honestly, after a few sips I wasn’t that into it anymore. I want to get down to some AF days.
@MissMay, I LOVE the graphic of the guy flicking the wine devil off of his shoulder!5 -
I think this the group I need! I enjoy a drink in the evening chatting with my husband. One drink is all, but I know it adds calories. And I seriously need to lose a few pounds!4
-
October Goal:
I'm shooting for a sober October, but if I don't reach that 100%, I'd like to reach at least 75% AF days this month. I fell short of my 50% goal over the last few months and really need to put more focus and work into meeting this month's goal.
October:
AF: 1
A: 0
Day one done!

Welcome to all of the newcomers - I've found this group to be very helpful and inspirational, and I hope you do too.5

Welcome to all the new members! This group is great for accountability and support! I'm shooting for sober October as well after only getting 8 AF days last month. Good luck to everyone!
AF = 1
A = 04
