Morning everyone
Got in 7.56M today at 09'56.
@quilteryoyo thank you.... I was forced to have that 1 (okay, 2!) beer "it's my birthday! You won't have one with me?". Peer pressure! .... and water back??
@Scott6255 thank you! Well done on the Half.
Ran into London today, rather than my usual loop. Lots of Americans visible in their jerseys today. Green of the Jets and bright purple of the Vikings
Have a lovely Sunday all9 -
@WarmJellyfish Great run. Technology?!
@tarun_yadavA Great run today. Hahaha about peer pressure. It happens to us all. You must have missed my post from yesterday. Yes, I have water back. Whooo Hooo! Under a boil alert for a couple of weeks, but not having to feel the commode from a bucket is great!
Has anyone heard anything from @chris_in_cal lately? He hasn't posted here, or on Strava, since he told us about his skin cancer diagnosis. I hope he is okay.
I feel it has been pretty quiet on here lately. Have others left us? I hope not. I really enjoy our little group of runners/friends.6 -
@quilteryoyo I haven't seen any activity on Garmin connect either. I hope @chris_in_cal is doing ok and will rejoin soon.4

Oct total: 10.1/125 miles
YTD: 784.8/1200 miles
10/5: 6 miles
10/6: 4.1 miles
Easy miles this morning. First week of the training plan, which bumps me to 6 days a week. I was able to sleep in again and still got out before it got too hot, one of the best parts of fall and winter running.6 -
02.10 5.0km 39min 7:44/km - 3x3min, 5x0.5min intervals
04.10 4.0km 31min 7:50/km - slow
06.10 3.0km 24min 7:59/km - slow
12.02km
So this totally didn't work and I had to abort my run. Not sure whether the problem was too little carbs today at the cost of fats, or whether I had too little magnesium. My leg muscles cramped up after the first 5 minutes and it never stopped, and also my chest/abdomen were tight and hence I could not inhale properly. Basically, my congenital muscle problems were back not at totally full force, but it still was a dud.6 -
@WarmJellyfish Rucking sounds like fun. Are you supposed to jog while rucking or is it more like hiking with a pack. One of the audiobooks I read recently talked extensively about it (I think it was “The Comfort Crisis”).
I am happy to hear you have your water back on @quilteryoyo . Good luck “preparing” for you upcoming races @AlphaHowls and @Scott6255 - quotations used because you are both super ready .
I have been too busy with the kids and my own activities to post. I am on the largest German island on the North Sea. It is super relaxing so far and a great place for running as there are multiple climate zones, minimal card and tons of paths- or you can just run in the sand. Not all the running is easy and it can get really windy here, but for normal base training after Berlin, it’s perfect. Tomorrow I will try to squeeze a run in between three cross training “appointments” I have for Nordic walking (yeah- not the “coolest” looking sport), Pilates, and a bike tour.
I went on a really cool 15.1km run yesterday where I got a bit and ran about 5km more than intended (which I was ok with). The day before that I did an 8.2km run on the beach and in the sand dune area. Both were quite enjoyable.
Photos from the beach today.
23.3/160km for October.5 -
@Laurz9191 it can both. Most people fast walk. Fast running with a heavy pack is probably not a good idea. I'm trying to aim to be able to do 12 miles in under 3 hrs with a 35lb pack, so I think some jogging will be involved.4
-
Nice run @martaindale . Are you training for a marathon? Sorry if you told us and I forgot.
Sorry to hear your muscles didn't cooperate today @yirara . Hopefully it is short lived and you can try again tomorrow.
Glad you are enjoying your time on the island and enjoying running and other exercise @Laurz9191 ! Sounds near perfect.
I did a mile walk on the treadmill after church and before lunch today. I needed the rest after yesterday's "run."3 -
October Goal: 140 Miles
10/01: 6.06 miles
10/02: 4.25 miles
10/03: 6.05 miles
10/04: 7.02 miles
10/06: 10.02 miles
33.40/140 miles completed for October
Today the plan called for a 10 mile long run so that's what I did. It was warmer than I expected it to be, but it wasn't too bad.
I saw the dog in the cemetery today. She followed me to the park and then continued to follow me about a mile further. Then she saw a cat and chased it and quit following me. I posted her picture on Facebook and someone who works at the cemetery told me who she belongs to and said she comes and visits them at the cemetery a lot. I actually know her owners (one of the benefits of living in a town with a population of ~5000 people) so I feel much better about her running with me.

Morning all
Got in 5.6 at 09'56.
@Laurz9191 enjoy!!! Must be cold?
No I've not heard from @chris_in_cal either. I DM-ed him on Strava. Did try a FB / Linkedin search using Chris Collins and San Diego... But too many profiles, none of which was our guy5 -
Not much to report. Still on schedule. Last month was a great running month but I noticed I did a lot of long runs and rest days. Yesterday was warmer than normal for Oct but still better than summer so I managed 7. Up to 30 out of goal of 150.
It does seems like maybe some folks are not as active as before but they usually will stop by for a little while. My motivation is very lagging and sometimes I just tell myself to do a 5K and then it goes longer after I get a rhythm. Yesterday was like that. My legs felt tired for the first 2 miles but I did end up feeling better the further I went. I think the beginning of the month can be tough when it feels like we set a mountain of miles ahead of ourselves?
8 -
Great run @kgirlhart and I'm glad you found out who owns the dog.
Nice run @tarun_yadavA . I do hope Chris is okay!
Great running @SummerSkier ! The beginning of the month can be a little daunting, but as you run away the miles, you get a great feeling of accomplishment.6 -
45km of 175km for the month
I have another 200km to go before I hit 2000km for the year. Woot.
I got me a couple of soft 5kg (11lbs) kettlebells to up the ante for the rucking challenge I set myself. Time for weight training.
Looks like another big wind turner is headed for FL. Those out there, stay safe!7 -
Target 50 miles/80.45k
2 Oct: 4.86mi/7.8k
4 Oct: 4.22mi/6.79k
7 Oct: 2.36mi/3.78k
Total 11.44mi/18.4k
Busy weekend, so a gentle 20 minutes today as ordered by Garmin Coach was fine with me: this is the ‘taper week’ for my ‘5k Race Day’ on Saturday. I decided to go to my first ParkRun as a bit of a celebration for finishing the program - I extended the training another week back when I realised there’s no ski lessons this coming Saturday. Running with a whole crowd of people is going to be very weird!
I credit @chris_in_cal for giving me the motivation to get out there and start running myself, and I always enjoyed seeing his activities on Garmin and reading updates here: if you’re lurking, @chris_in_cal, I miss you buddy!
7 -
Nice running @WarmJellyfish .
@AmunahSki Do you have an actual race on Saturday, or is your ParkRun your end of the training "race?" You have done really well with the training.4 -

I went to the gym this morning. Got a PR on the deadlift of 110 pound x 6.
This afternoon, I did a driveway wun. I did a run/walk, mostly running, for 2.25 miles, and then a cool down walk of 0.45 miles. I made it nice and sleasy since my legs were a bit tired from the gym. It actually went better than expected. Avg pace was 13:15 min/mile. Avg HR was 136 with a max of 158 bpm.7 -

36.55/140 miles completed for October
I was feeling kind of sore this morning. I'm not sure if it was from yesterday's long run or Saturday's yoga. Neither of them seemed any more intense than usual. So I ran 3.1 pretty easy miles this morning and I felt good running. It was a nice morning and I saw two foxes.

Morning all
Got in 5.6M at 09'38 pace.
@quilteryoyo "Parkrun" is this British thing where a number of Parks in the UK host weekly Free 5K community runs.
(Think I've seen @ContraryMaryMary post that too - so maybe not British but global?)7 -
@quilteryoyo I'm training for a HM in Feb. I can do the distance now but not very quickly. Training is for speed, hopefully a new PR and sub 2 hr.6
-
Oct total: 15.1/125 miles
YTD: 789.8/1200 miles
10/5: 6 miles
10/6: 4.1 miles
10/7: 5 miles
First tempo workout was a bust. In Hansons, tempo is race pace so this one was 1 mi WU, 3 mi at race pace, and 1 mi CD. The first mile was 30s slow and it was taking a lot of energy to hold that. The second mile was even slower. By halfway through the second mile I knew I wasn't hitting the pace so I adjusted to a comparable effort. The third mile was between the first two.
I did the run after work and it was in the 90's yesterday, so I waited for sunset. By then it was 85 or so but the humidity is at its low point. I looked back to this run last year to see how it went and it was a bit encouraging. I did better last year but it was still not spot on. I was also running in the morning, when I'm fresh and the temps are cooler. It made me feel better because despite a less than stellar start to training I got a 2 min PR last year. So I'm hoping this is just the hard adjustment back from only running easy miles and as it cools off and my legs remember what running fast feels like I'll start seeing some improvement.4 -
Hi everyone!
Yesterday, after 3 hours of cross training I had no energy for running. Today I got in a 4.6km run and then went to a 50 minute Tai Bo class, which was actually more work than the running, so I decided that was enough physical activity for today. I am taking a bike ride with the kids to the beach in a little bit, dos I will definitely get a lot of movement in. @tarun_yadavA It’s surprisingly warm here between 14-17C, so it’s not swimming weather but great outdoor weather - although it us always windy.
@quilteryoyo Great job on the long run!!!!
@martaindale Great job on you run, even though it’s always a struggle when you can’t meet the splits you hope to!!!
28/160km for October- I need to get a few longer runs in soon if I plan to meet my goal .
5 -
Oct 1 – 4.46 miles
Oct 4 – 3.10 miles
Oct 6 – 9.08 miles
Oct 8 – 5.11 miles
Total 21.75 miles/Goal 80 miles
I ran 5 miles with a friend this morning. It was a nice cool 46F. I tweaked my back a bit on Sunday lifting cases of water so my run was more of a shuffle today.
I’ve been busy with work and trying to help out with relief efforts for the Hurricane Helene victims. My immediate area is mostly back to normal. Electricity has been restored to most areas of the county. The fields are green. There are still trees down alongside roads but all manageable. Just over the mountain however devastation reigns. The photos on social media get to be too much and I just have to disconnect from it all for a while. Grateful that I have that option. Yesterday, I went with a group from work to deliver relief supplies to Limestone, TN. Thankfully, the command site we were sent to was located above the river and all of the destruction in that area. On Sunday, I worked at a distribution center in Damascus, VA. They were hard hit by the flooding but thankfully no human lives were lost there.
@Laurz9191 – The beach looks beautiful but a bit cold!
@WarmJellyfish – I helped time a race a couple of weeks ago that included a 12K ruck. I think most participants had 20 pound vests but I don’t believe any had 35 pounds. That’s about how much my fully loaded backpack weighs when I go hiking for a couple of days. Hiking not running!
Glad you have water again @quilteryoyo! The track club had 2 races scheduled for Davy Crocket Birthplace this month and next month which have been cancelled due to the park being basically destroyed. I think Roan Mountain State Park where we ran together was hard hit also.
5 -
@martaindale nice job on your run even though you felt like it was not a total success. Once the weather cools, you'll be outperforming your goals I'm sure.
@quilteryoyo @Teresa502 glad you are basically back to normal after the hurricane. Hope the folks in FL keep safe from the approaching Milton hurricane!
I planned on running yesterday, but right after breakfast I got bad stomach cramps and sat in the bathroom for at least 10 minutes. There was no way I could run after that, so slept another 2 hours and had did the bathroom routine again. Reluctantly got ready for work and gradually started feeling better throughout the day. So not sure what all that was about.
Got in a 10K this morning. Started out thinking I was just going to do a very slow easy run, but after about halfway something in my brain said to push the pace. So it ended up an average paced run 😏
7 -
Glad you had a nice run yesterday @kgirlhart ! Foxes are cool.
@tarun_yadavA Yes, I have seen others do Park Runs. I just wasn't sure from the post if @AmunahSki was saying her Park Run was her reward for finishing the training or if she also had a race she was going to run. Now that I re-read it, I see that her Park Run is going to be her planned 5K.
@martaindale Sounds like you did okay with the tempo run. Glad you were able to be encouraged by last year's training. I have confidence with you that you will be able to PR again this year!
Thanks @Laurz9191 . Sounds like you are getting a lot of varied types of exercise. You're doing great.
@Teresa502 I'm glad you were able to run. I hope your back feels better. Cases of water are heavy. Thank you so much for helping out with the relief efforts. Sometimes, the pictures are too much to handle. And, you are right. I've heard Davy Crocket park is pretty much gone, but haven't really seen a lot of pictures from there. I know that Roan Mountain was hit hard and getting there through Erwin is not possible at the moment because of the bridge being out. I think it may be a while before a lot of those parks and trails are open again. I'm glad you got your electricity back. I do want to say that I love living in this area because even though there was so much devastation, you don't really hear a lot of people complaining about needing help they aren't getting. All I am hearing is how grateful they are for the help that has arrived and those not affected are all wanting to know how they can help!
Thanks @Scott6255 . I hope everyone in FL is safe too. It looks like another huge, strong hurricane. My family is on the other coast, but will probably get some of the affects from it. Sorry you were sick yesterday, but glad you are feeling better today and got in a good run. I think there is something going around again. I had to work today because one of the teachers has the stomach bug. Glad yours was just a 24 hour, or less, thing.

Mom and I did our shopping this morning. I was home only long enough to eat a bit and put my groceries up. Then I worked at daycare for 5 hours. I was in the oldest class, so was fairly easy. They are a good group and so much like little adults at 5 years old.
After I got home, I did my planned drill workout on the driveway. I didn't do a lot of extra since it was late. My cadence 30 sec paces were 9:58, 9:35, 11:03, and 10:00 min/mile. I felt pretty strong today. That's not always the case.

I ran 6 miles this morning. It was a beautiful morning and a great run. I felt better this morning than I did yesterday. Still a little sore, but not too bad.
Today I hit my 9 year streak of logging into mfp. I find that kind of hard to believe. 3285 days is a long time. I'm pretty proud of it.

Morning all
Got in 6.54 miles at 09"48
@Laurz9191 does look v.pretty!
Checked in on my Ft Laudy buddy. That side is fine. He gets to Work from home for the rest of the week! That's about it.7 -
Target 50 miles/80.45k
2 Oct: 4.86mi/7.8k
4 Oct: 4.22mi/6.79k
7 Oct: 2.36mi/3.78k
9 Oct: 3.13mi/5k
Total 14.57mi/23.4k
Garmin Coach set me 20 minutes easy pace today as the last run before Saturday’s ParkRun, (which is set as my Garmin ‘5k Race Day’, as you worked out), but I felt like testing my target race pace/cadence so I warmed up before and ran a 5k. I got PB’s for 1k, 1mi & 2mi PB, and 2nd fastest 5k, which I am really happy about. If I get sub 35 minutes on the day, with it being a new experience and all, I’ll be very happy - but if I don’t break any records on Saturday, I can now blame it on not following Garmin’s instructions today!
However, all this seems very trivial compared to what you’re going through after Hurricane Helene: it’s a mere two minute mention on the UK news, but hearing you deal with the situation, day after day, really puts it into perspective. My thoughts are with you allMy PR’s:
1k: 6:32 (previous 6:39)
1m: 10:37 (previous 10:51)
2m: 21:42 (previous 22:05)
5k: 34:39
Longest run/walk - 5.33mi/8.57k
Longest run - 4.63mi/7.44k6 -
01/10 3.84 miles
02/10 4.05 miles
08/10 3.62 miles
Total 11.51/60 miles
I feel like all my energy has disappeared or maybe I have been doing too much on the bike. Yesterday evening's run was a slog right to the end. Usually when I'm not feeling it things pick up after 1st mile and the rest is good but that was plod plod plod the whole time.
This new hurricane Milton sounds frightening...
7 -
@kgirlhart Great run and a huge congratulations on hour 9 year streak! Such dedication to your health has paid off!
Nice run @tarun_yadavA ! I'm glad your buddy is okay. My family is on the East Coast, and a bit South of where the main part of Milton is headed, so they should be okay too. I feel really bad for those in Tampa and wherever Milton decides to come on shore.
Thanks @AmunahSki ! Congrats on all of those PRs. You are doing great. I'm sure the adrenaline of the Park Run will push you to a new PR. Looking forward to hearing about it.
@mari333a Some days are like that. Good for you for sticking it out and getting it done. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.5
