    Funny - as a whitewater paddler, I generally always AVOIDED swimming because it meant I was no longer in the boat!

    To this day when we are paddling and make a stop where people swim, I usually don't. I paddle canoes and kayaks - flat water and whitewater. I row a raft. I love SCUBA. You'd think I'd take advantage of awesome places to go swim. I like snorkeling in the ocean. I generally am not that inspired to just swim for fun. The pool is different. It's more meditative for me.

    Funny, too, when new folks come to join club whitewater trips, sometimes they don't have all the required essential gear - often a helmet. When they say, "But I'm a good swimmer," it does not inspire confidence. I want people who don't want to swim! Then they stay in the boat! There's a reason we can roll them back up if we flip. Up is good. Swimming is bad....

    I reckon it's all about the context.
