Melody, we run two dehumidifiers in our basement to keep mold and mildew away.
I hope things are going better for your daughter.0 -
Sorry about that flu! It seems like so many people have something this month. Hope it disappears soon.
Daughter will need laparoscopic surgery to remove a non-cancerous cyst. I see a trip to occupy myself with granddaughter in my future. And give her mom a chance to rest.
Yes to elk pics!

Good the cyst is non cancerous. I’m sure that is a big relief.
I also run a dehumidifier in the winter months. Our house is pretty air tight with triple pane windows and moisture can be a problem in winter.
Will try and get a pic of the elk but they are pretty alert and on the move quickly if I even open the door to get a peek at them when they are across the road. They must have excellent hearing. Will try!1 -
Big storm dumping snow/freezing rain next two days. Antibiotics kicking in and I am finally getting better. Longing for sunshine and hot days, but grateful to be safe inside a warm home during a winter storm. So glad we don’t need to go anywhere on treacherous roads and saying thank you prayers we still have power. Many are not as fortunate.2

We need a new basement dehumidifier. There is a difference of opinion about whether we would need to run it in winter.
Traipsed in the snowy woods today for an hour. Thank God for YakTraks, or I would never leave the house in winter.0 -
I hear you on the difference of opinion 😊
We couldn’t live in this house if we didnt run dehumidifiers year round.
I admire your dedication to walking in all weather. We are under ice here. I do have Yaktrax, but dont take any chances since my osteoporosis puts me in a high risk group. Can’t risk a fall. I tried to make myself do one of Leslie Sanstone’s indoor walks but just lacked all motivation. Maybe tomorrow. I miss my old dogs who forced me to get out and walk 4 times a day.0 -
For our home we only run the dehumidifier in the winter when needed and it keeps the humidity at a good level. We have to watch the humidity levels though as we don't want it to go too low. During the spring, summer and fall we like to open windows to let fresh air in which helps. When it gets hot in the summer the air conditioner runs.
I am sitting in the livingroom on my computer and see the elk on the field across from our house. First time I have seen them during the day. Looks like about 6. Too far away to take a pic but will keep my eye on them.1 -
Had not thought about Leslie Sansone for a while!
Never got to my walk today. Went food shopping and did some decluttering. Tried an online recipe for a vegan lentil soup which was pretty good.
Tomorrow we go to help out with food distribution. I fear the program will start to see increased demand soon.
Daughter cannot get surgery until May unless there is a cancellation.1 -
Starting to do some major cleaning in the house. Did one bedroom yesterday and on to the next one today. Will slowly work on one room at a time until I'm finished.
Will be going out for supper tomorrow for Valentines. Will choose wisely for my meal (probably salmon with a baked potato) and unfortunately have to say no to the desert. Nice to have a break from meal prep.1 -
Have a wonderful time out, Joy!
I was correct about the food distribution. No let up for the full two hours. And most people were taking everything; not too picky unless they had dietary restrictions.
Came home really tired and did not accomplish much. Must try to make bread tonight.
Windy and slushy here.

Had a little break between storms today. So many downed trees and power outages here. Hope the getit all fixed before the next storm moves in. We were fortunate not to lose trees. Some of our neighbors are not so blessed. Winter is just hard, especially for older people.
May seems like a long time to have to wait for surgery. Does your daughter have to live with pain until then? It looks like the medical system needs some kind of an overhaul. I waited four months on my knee replacement. I got very good with crutches and had great upper body strength, though 😂
I was pretty worthless today. Feeling better but still coughing. I sat around knitting on a sock most of the day. I need to make myself do something tomorrow.0 -
Yes, May seems far away. The plan is to call every week to find out if there are any cancellations. Not optimal for scheduling a flight for myself. She is on painkillers, and she is working, but it is a drag.
I think hubby waited three months for his knee replacement.
Took a bit of a walk. Weather report is not hopeful about the weekend.Had a date lunch also while the roads were good.
Knitting is never a bad way to spend time. But I realized that most of my hobbies involve sitting, and thus I have to also make time for exercise.1 -
I ran a lot of errands today. I went so many places trying to get everything on my big list in one day. I came home and checked the health ap on my phone and I had walked 5.1 miles! It was so easy and painless because I was searching so many stores for different item. I was very surprised to see over 11,000 steps taken just with running errands. I never did find the lampshades I am looking for, but we are well stocked for the next storm. I also grabbed three library books and the first season DVD for All Creatures Great and Small. Snagged a 550 piece jigsaw puzzle too. I think I am ready to be snowed in again 😂
You have made me realize all my hobbies are sedentary too. I am pondering this.0 -
Had a very nice supper out yesterday. Decided to have their steak special and it was so good. Appreciated not having to cook.
That's a lot of walking Cat...good for you.
Lazy day today. Decided to download an ebook and do some reading.0 -
Great job on walking! It has been so dreary here I am not getting out much to walk.
More work on the basement room today. I guess it is progress?
Also filed taxes. I hope they don’t try to pull any tricks in the IRS. This new setup is making me nervous.
Tried a new recipe. It involved making a substrate sauce, then sauteed brussels sprouts, topped with two more dressings. Mainly lemon juice and yogurt based. Tasted great, but if I ever do it again I will make all the dressings ahead of time. Time-consuming! This is what happens when hubby decides to check out a cookbook. It was a Jose Andres recipe.

I don't know where to talk about this so I'll try here since you all seem to be "my peeps." I'm 74 and live in a seniors independent living/life care community. Hubby is in the nursing home long term (shall we say permanently?) I'm still in our independent living 2-bedroom apt watching our nest egg diminish as we pay his bill.
I've always been heavy. For the last 20-some years in the upper 200s. I weighed over 200 when I graduated high school -- anytime I weighed in the 100s it was only because of a major weight loss effort. Life is changing as I age, however. I realized I will probably live until my mid-90s since that's what most of the women in my family do and I can't expect that to be reasonable if I'm 100+ pounds overweight.
In the last 8 months and thanks in part to Mounjaro (for diabetes) controlling my snacking desires and judicious use of the food diary here, I've lost just over 40 pounds at the rate of about 5 per month -- a nice steady rate. How I look at it is "40-some down, 60-some to go."
The problem is, I'm losing dedication to this project and finding my weight loss stopping. I know what I need to do. I need to increase my walking and exercise and fill out the food diary to keep track of calories. Am I ready to do that again? It's hard. But life is hard. Damn. I just want to lie on the couch and eat bon bons.
So, what do I want from you all? Nothing much except an ear. I know what I need to do and I know how to fix this doldrum. Dang. I wish I could wake up skinny but that ain't gonna happen without effort on my part. So, I will start this Sunday morning with a nice, healthy breakfast of oatmeal and blueberries and check the new dining room menu for lower calorie options for supper and resume the struggle. And finally, face the scale this morning to record what I weigh honestly.
Thanks for all the support.0 -
Welcome to our little group. I will be 75 this year and have been losing at a very slow rate. Was 186 last July and now weigh 175. Was diagnosed as prediabetic last fall and have eliminated sugar out of my diet (as much as I can). Will be going for blood work in the spring and hoping that my sugar levels are down to normal.
You have done amazing with your weight loss. I'm sure everyone gets discouraged at some point and you are definitely on the right track in starting with a healthy breakfast. Hope you stop back in and let us know how you are doing.0 -
Welcome to our group, Heidi. The friends here help me so much with listening and encouragement. We are all in the same boat of needing to get weight and health in order while we face growing older. I hope you will stick around and find what you need here.
Melody, I hear ya on that recipe business. I got the bright idea to fix tenderloin steaks for Valentine’s Day. What could have been a quick sear on the stove top and a few minutes to finish in the oven turned into
Almost an hour as I chopped and melted and blended and separated eggs, etc etc etc to make the Barefoot Contessa’s Bernaise Sauce from the Barefoot in Paris cookbook. Honestly! The steaks would have been just as good without the sauce.
The talk about healthy breakfasts has me curious. What is your favorite healthy breakfast?0 -
Welcome, Heidi! You are doing amazingly well. It is always hard to stay motivated. The best we can do is one day at a time.
My story—overweight since age 6. Now on the verge of 72. At college and in my twenties I lost weight. After second child weight loss became impossible but weight gain so easy. Ballooned up! Around 10 years ago I began to log food and lose weight. Gained a little back. Now mostly holding steady at mid overweight range. Would sure love to lose 15 pounds. It is so hard!!!
I walk and do some free weights. In summer I bike and in winter I try to fit in a swim now and then.I try to stick to 1200 calories a day. Would love to be a size smaller and fend off heart disease.
Too much wintry mix to drive but we decided to walk to the food store. Have not been in so much slush and ice and snow in a very long time! But got my steps in.
Cat, I empathize about the steak!
Lately my breakfast is some variation of the following: one egg and homemade bread toast, or homemade granola,or homemade yogurt with fruit and nuts. Sometimes oatmeal. Once a month I go off the wagon and have pancakes.

Yikes!
Up half a pound. Too many snowed in days and too much cooking during the snow days. This is my own fault. Time to move more and eat less. My goal for the coming week is to drop the half pound I gained.
I think I will have two eggs for breakfasy. I have the dentist this morning. Because of the fake knee, I have to take four big antibiotic capsules before dental visits. If I don’t eat a lot the pills make me sick. So this will be my big meal today.0 -
I like to eat a variety for my breakfast and will rotate from oatmeal or sunnyboy (Canadian product) cereal one day, then toast with peanut butter, a bagel with a fried egg or an english muffin with either p/b or an egg. I always have a bit of fruit with my breakfast...either fresh or frozen berries like blueberries or raspberries, frozen fruit blends or 1/2 of a banana. Fruit portion is about 1/2 a cup.
It is so cold here again at minus 30 C and a wind to top it off. Will be making quick trips outside with the dogs.1 -
Made turkey soup today which seemed appropriate for such a cold day. Also made some hamburger and hot dog buns. Quite a productive day.1
-
English muffin with an egg sounds great. I’m going to make some English muffins tomorrow and then we will have them when the storm hits on Wednesday0
-
So cold and windy today!!! And snow from last night blowing around. Stayed in all day.
Did more cleaning and some basement demolition. Have stock in the slow cooker.
I haven't tried making English muffins for ages! Now I want some.0 -
Cold here again too. Yesterday we were at close to minus 40 C with the wind chill. Furnace ran so much last night.
So looking forward to spring! I actually have all my garden seeds. The only things missing are potato and onion sets...too early to get those.
I hadn't made English muffins in ages but thought they would be nice change from my bread. Not very much sugar in them so that is a plus. I used to like them with jam but right now that is not an option. Tend to have them with egg, peanut butter or a bit of cheese.0 -
Yes, I have some seeds too. It cheers me up to think about gardening!
Blustery again today. If Toronto has been having the same weather as us it is not hard to imagine winds being a factor in that plane crash.
Too cold to walk but we went swimming. Sometimes I think the prep and aftermath are what makes me tired more than the actual swim part.

Melody, I agree. The swim prep takes forever and is so tiring!
Welcome achefling. Your numbers are impressive.
Another snowy day here. I am going to do an inside walk with Leslie Sansone and maybe a bit of chair yoga. I have a new library book that is tempting me 😂0 -
Amazing that there were no fatalities in that crash.
One more brutal cold day to get through then we are on our way to nicer temps. Getting back to my cleaning/decluttering after taking a couple of days off.0
