Nice day again today and enjoying it. Going out for supper tonight with a couple of friends at a local restaurant. Looking forward to it.

Cold but blue skies today. A swim and a small walk.

sometimes restaurants can be difficult. I try to pull up menus online and make choices before I go so I won’t be tempted to make bad choices when we get there. It’s so hard.

Nice visit with friends yesterday and a good meal. The local restaurant we went to is at a truck stop so very basic menu. Had a 6oz sirloin steak with baked potato, veggies along with a small portion of coleslaw. Had a bit of butter on my potato along with sour cream but didn't go overboard. This restaurant has amazing pies and I usually take a slice home to indulge in later in the evening but did not do that. Had coffee to drink and opted out of my usual glass of wine. When thinking about this, I have not had any type of alcohol since October last year. I'm not much of a drinker but do enjoy the occasional glass of wine with a meal when we go out. Will be interesting to see what my sugar levels are when I get tested. May have to rebook my March 28th appt though as they are calling for freezing rain the day before and snow on the 28th. Highway conditions may not be good…will see and decide early next week.

you had a restaurant victory! You got a healthy meal, drank coffee, and didn’t go home with pie. That’s actually three victories. WooHoo!!

Boo for snow and bad weather interfering with your appointment. March is a tricky weather month.

Yes it was a good restaurant visit and really enjoyed catching up with our friends. Super lazy today and not sure what's up with that. Haven't accomplished anything except for making filling for potato/bacon perogies. Hubby suggested we get started on some prep for Easter and thought it was a good idea. Will be making them tomorrow with his help.

Picked up my wall mop from the mail yesterday and looks good. Lightweight but appears to be sturdy. Was going to give it a try today but will put it off until later next week. Spent the last couple of hours going through amazon looking for a new backpack to take on my trip in June. Need something small that will be my personal item on the plane (16" x 13" x 6"). Just taking a carry on bag so want another option as well. Found a couple that I think will work but still deciding.

Good job on the restaurant! There are so many hidden calories to watch out for.

Avoiding the scale since my birthday. Maybe in a couple of days.

I did some yardwork before the rain came. Then mid-afternoon my hip started to hurt. So I have been resting since then. It is back to being chilly here.

Joy, when you take a vacation does someone else look after the farm?

  • Joy1580vb
    Joy1580vb Posts: 653 Member

Melody, hope your hip is feeling better.

We have neighbour/friends that look after our pets if we both are travelling. They are a couple we have known for 50+ years and started farming about the same time we did. We were all in our early 20's so quite a few years ago. Hubby and I keep an eye on their farm if they are travelling also.

Nice day out now but we had freezing rain this morning. Cancelled my dr's appt and will re-book probably later in April. Weather is too iffy and I don't want to cancel at the last minute.

thanks, hip still kind of iffy. Decided yoga was not in the cards today. I have had this before so it should start to get better.

Isn’t it great to have longtime friends?

Snow flurries tonight—that is very March-like.

Melody good you are taking it easy.

Had an interesting day yesterday. Went to a drug store that has a health clinic facility in it. These facilities were established in a few drug stores a while back to help take the load off our doctors. The woman I saw was very well informed on diabetes and it is her speciality. She was able to pull up my latest lab results. Had a good chat with her and she gave me a testing unit for finger prick testing. Showed me how to use it and explained my results which she said were very good. The testing unit was fully covered which was a plus. She offered to do the blood panel test for me which required a requisition to a lab. I said I would wait for my doctor to do that in a few weeks time. She will be a good resource for me. Easy to make an appointment online with her.

it is comforting to talk with someone who is a specialist who can explain things. Did the test say you are diabetic or pre-diabetic?
i know you said you are careful about sugar intake.

Feeling better today but it was really chilly with flurries so I chickened out on a walk. Hoping to make it to yoga tomorrow.

More crazy tariff talk today. Maybe people who don’t live near the border have no clue what the world is really like.

On the plus side our nice Ukrainian flag finally came and is now waving in the March wind. Such pretty blue and yellow.

    Joy1580vb Posts: 653 Member

The test I had was a finger prick test that shows how I digested my last meal which was breakfast and about 4 hours before the test. Results were good. I am pre diabetic. Watching my sugar intake but also carbs as some carbs can cause sugar spikes. I am learning a lot. Will be going back to my doctor to have lab work done which will show A1C levels in a more detailed way.

Lots of snow overnight and still snowing. Had about 5 inches so far and roads/highways are in very poor driving condition so glad I cancelled doctors appt.

Melody, nice to hear about your flag. I feel for you living close to the border. So sad and frightening how one man has changed the entire world. I am sure that some people who voted for him are rethinking their choice.

    oceanmelody Posts: 668 Member

Yes carbs are a part of the problem to be sure.

Five inches…by the end of March I am not in favor of that. It CAN snow here in May, though.

I can visit the lake and imagine Toronto. That might be as close as I get for a while. Living here are dual citizens. I had a Canadian pastor and a Canadian choir director. Kids would take school trips and church trips to Canada. My daughter had a friend who lived along the St. Lawrence and crossed over to Ottawa to get her hair done! So much interaction and good will gone. It makes no sense.

Just trying to learn from yoga and walking in nature and doing what I can. Everything changes and changes back somehow.

The insanity continues with more tariffs. Will be interesting to see how our elected officials respond in the coming days.

Snowed all day and night yesterday and we now have over a foot of snow on the ground. Looks like it is starting to end so hubby has gone out to start up the snowblower.

Weight is still staying the same. Patiently waiting for another bit of a decline.

cloudy day, small walk with no hills. Seems like hubby gets a bursitis attack after walking hills???? So we played it safe.

Have not checked scale for a few days. Just trying to eat sensibly and not go under 1200 calories.

Trying to work on art projects when not on errands or cleaning. Keeps me from excessive doomscrolling.

  • Joy1580vb
    Joy1580vb Posts: 653 Member

I need to start limiting my news scrolling as I am getting so angry about what is happening. Voters in our upcoming federal election are mostly looking at who is best for dealing with our neighbour. Nothing else seems to matter and there are so many other issues.

What type of art projects are you working on? Started another book on my kobo. They seem to come in spurts from ones I have on hold.

Somehow my post did not save.

Trying to learn about watercolors. So far very primitive results.

I hope Cat is okay. We have not heard from her.

Snow is slowly going now. Made sauerkraut/bacon perogies yesterday and will tackle cabbage rolls during the week. Hubby had some for his lunch and said they were very good. I did not partake. I think quitting added sugar was a healthy choice for me. Thinking back a few months, I used to get a bit dizzy sometimes and that is not happening now.

Miss Cat…hope she will come back.

My cabinets are done and the kitchen gets gutted in the morning. I have been working like crazy to get everything packed up and finding places for theboxes. Yikes! I thought I would have more time and I underestimated how long it would take.

Interesting about the sugar/dizzy connection! I get a bit dizzy sometimes but not as much as when I was on blood pressure meds.

Joy, if I walked into your kitchen I would feel like my mother was cooking.

Cat, such a big project. It will be beautiful when finished.

Such a lot of work for you Cat. Hope you were able to get everything boxed up and cabinet installation is going smoothly.

Prepping for my cabbage rolls today and will make them tomorrow.

Walked in a bit of mizzle today but it was still good to get out. Lots of errands and more basement ceiling demo.

There will be a pro-Canada rally at the lake this week. I may just go!

Scale just bounces up and down the same 2 pounds. Maddening.

Melody, thank you for supporting Canada.

Cat, I hope your kitchen is coming together.

Getting a snow/rain mix this morning and a grey looking day. Starting my cabbage rolls in a bit. Have two nice heads to do so will take awhile.

colder today—was going to do yoga but call from daughter about bumped up surgery changed the whole schedule. Have to plan a trip immediately after hubby’s laser eye surgery so we can be there for new time. talked to the scheduler in person. It will be a zooey few days in mid-month.

It will rain tomorrow—have made a heart with maple leaf sign which I might have to coat with something water resistant.

Stressful time for you Melody. Hope your daughter's surgery goes well. Good that they were able to get her in earlier than planned.

Sunny, clear day today. There are a few animals laying on the quarter across the road but quite far down. I looked with the binoculars and they are either deer or elk. Nice to see.

Finished my cabbage rolls yesterday and they are now tucked away in the freezer. Didn't take as long as I thought. The sour heads were very nice and easy to roll so happy about that.

it is good when the leaves are pliable enough without struggling!

We had about 30 people out in the yuckiest freezing rain to support Canada. I lasted half an hour.

    I love elk. So majestic.

Made a bunch of Mediterranean chicken thighs and a bean and vegetable dish that I recently discovered. I have not figured out how to properly emulsify anything so that it has a mayo consistency. So I have a tasty garlicky sauce instead of dip.

I'm looking for more dishes to incorporate beans and lentils in my diet. Need to switch out potatoes as I know they can raise blood sugar levels. Hubby isn't fond of beans or lentils so will continue the potatoes for him and an alternative for me.

Thank you for supporting Canada. We certainly appreciate all the support from our neighbours.

Bean soups are a good alternative. And if you cook whole grains like quinoa you can always throw roasted vegetables and cooked lentils in at the end with a dressing you like.
Hubby read that lots of beans can be bad for blood sugar, so if you can mix them with equal amounts of veggie?

We got lots of good honks from drivers. Western New York loves Canada!

    Good suggestions. Thanks.

Have you made your travel plans yet?

Going out for supper today and will probably have the usual steak with baked potato. I know the potato isn't the best choice as far as blood sugar issue but local restaurant doesn't have many options. Just having a very light lunch today as don't want to go over on calories. Saw a slight dip on the scale this morning.

Ordered a new carry on bag this morning as my bag is starting to pull a bit on the expandable zipper part. I'm afraid it might give out on me. Have an Antler bag that is well over 15 years old and has served me well. Went with a 20 inch Travelpro Maxlite 5 spinner. Is expandable so should be able to shove a jacket or hoodie in it. Like to travel just with carry on bag along with a packable backpack as my personal item.

I could use a new carry on. I have been using a paisley Vera Wang backpack for ages.

I found the best travel purse online though. A Dagne Dover purse. I use it all the time now. Lightweight and it can also hold my camera.

I wonder how long it will be before we can take any kind of vacation besides to see family…

We walked in a wildlife refuge today. Did not see many birds, but heard the loudest insects and amphibians! Also saw a red fox.
