At what price do we eat meat?

I think after watching FOOD INC. and other documentaries, the question should really be "At What price do we eat? PERIOD." The herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides that are used in farming the beloved fruits and veggies you are eating aren't much better for you than the fat on some meat.
(I eat plants and animals, though I'm slowly moving more toward organic produce and meat. But I'm not blind. I realize even organics contain run off, winds blow pesticides onto crops, etc.)
So if the treatment of the animals bothers you, the treatment of our entire food supply as a whole should have you reeling.
Just so you know, organic doesn't mean "pesticide free." It just means they use pesticides that are certified organic.0 -
IMO, I think that it's healthier to eat more veggies and fruits, but to also eat animals (land or sea) 3-4 times a week. There are a lot of nutrients found in animals that aren't found in other foods. I should know. About 6 years ago I just stopped liking meat, all kinds. Including fish. What happened was I became seriously anemic. I had to take in large amounts of iron supplements every day, just to get back to "normal". I ate very healthy back then, too: almost no junk food, ate mostly veggies and some fruit, would eat lentils and other legumes, ate eggs and drank milk and ate yogurt, etc. I just didnt feel like eating fish or meat of any kind. The minute I was able to get my blood level to normal, I was eating red meat (mostly lamb, since its my favorite) 3 times at least a week and I havent had that problem with anemia since. Also, during my "just so happens" vegetarian moment, I felt my eye sight get weak, and my circulation was poor, too. Fruits and Veggies alone just doesnt cut it for everyone. I recommend you see your doctor before drastically cutting it out of your diet.
I've seen FOOD Inc as well as many other documentaries like that. I learned from them, and for the past 2 years buy my meat only from trusted sources: directly from the farm. Theres a farm in our area that you can buy meat from- we get an entire lamb (cheaper by bulk) and have it cut up for us and delivered to our home. We get our eggs that way, and our chicken too. We put it in a freezer and use it until its done. You can change where you buy your meat from or you can cut it out of your diet and risk losing necessary nutrients that your body needs.0 -
I eat meat because it's good.
and because we farm animals specifically for that purpose. We do the same to vegetables and you don't see THEM complaining!0 -
Just a question do any of the vegetarians or vegans eat marshmallows?
Most of the ones I know do not.
Well count me out then... Can't have BBQ Babies without stuffing them full of marshmallows first.0 -
I find meat eaters to be extremely threatened by the position of vegetarians, and I have to wonder why. As a vegetarian, I don't feel threatened by their position; I simply disagree with it. But the people who feel that human beings have a "right" to eat animals do make me see slightly red. As the OP stated, when plants will sustain us, why kill? And those who consider themselves "carnivores" but have to have their (purchased, not self-killed) meat cooked to perfection? C'mon. REAL carnivores kill their own and eat it raw and bloody. The hypocrisy just gets to me. And the poster on this thread who cautioned against anemia for vegetarians, may I say that I am vegetarian and am healthier than I have EVER been in my 54 years of life. My family is healthier because I cook less meat for them. We are almost never sick, and when we are its just a cold or mild bug. No chronic anything. I exercise daily and have amazing stamina and strength. I am 54 years old and can still dance all night. Vegetarianism does NOT equal anemia or poor health. You CAN get all your nutrition from plants with the possible exception of B12, which can be supplement by fortified foods. Research! Don't just believe what you hear! Vegetarians and vegans who pay attention to their nutritional needs instead of just scarfing down everything that isn't meat will find themselves healthier, and probably lighter of spirit, as their own spirits begin to resonate with the respect they are showing the animal kingdom. If you say you love animals yet you allow your spirit to be numbed to the "industry you rely on for food", then perhaps YOU should make changes so that you no longer rely on that industry...or seriously question your own love of animals. If we are truly honest with ourselves, and make ourselves recognize the absolute devastation that the animal meat industry for food is causing to our health and to the environment, I don't believe we could continue the process.
I didnt fully read this post.
But skimming through it i saw that it said if you were really a carnivore you would eat meat raw and bloody..
the problem with that is for hundreds of year back to like the dawn of civilization we have found ways to cook meat in fires..
Its very difficult for our digestive systems to process alot of raw meat, and therefore it would be being counter-productive eating it..
I mean we might aswell just eat plants.0 -
If you don't want to eat meat, don't eat meat, but to try and frame it as it's being cruel to animals, well then, I hope you don't live in a house on property you bought, since some poor animal used to call that home, and their habitat was wrecked to clear the land for it. I hope you don't drive a car, because cars can hit animals and kill them, and also the fumes from the exhaust can poison the animals, not to mention all the deadly chemicals required for the car to function properly that could also be deadly to animals. And of course, the destruction of animal habitats to pave roads for cars to drive on, destruction of habitats to build factories to build the cars, and on and on and on.
Eat meat if you want, or don't eat meat if you don't want, but if you're going to go all holier than though about animal treatment, you're being hypocritical, as just about everything that causes modern convenient living does damage to other animals, yes, even using the internet. And I don't need some random documentary to convince me of how I should eat, I have a brain, and I know how to think.
So...you shouldn't do anything because you can't do everything? By that logic, why shouldn't we go on a safari to shoot starving people? No point trying to be nice to them if we can't save them all, right?
Pathetic excuses.:)0 -

Loling at all of the pathetic justifications and braggadocio the meat-eaters are coming out with.
(Normally I would be less obnoxious, but, seriously? You've got meat-eaters coming out with ignorant, ill-researched comments, posting disgusting pictures, and being idiots in every other post.).

the one with the raw meat and the one with the bacon. Seriously? Red, looking like muscle fibres? Greasy and looking like burnt muscle fibres? How can you possibly look at a dead body and decide you want to put that in your mouth?0 -
You will never stop me from eating meat... or liking it... I could never be a vegetarian.0

I'm an animal lover, and I buy most of my meat from the local farmers. Every fall, I buy half a pig, and half a cow. I'm usually good for 10-11 months. One of the same farmer has also chickens, so I buy a few from him as well. I've got hen, so I get my own eggs every morning, and during the summer, I have a garden. I've been buying my meat from local farmers for a few years now, and when I buy meat at the grocery store... it definitely doesn't taste the same. But I could never stop eat meat. Never!0

The same way I look at dead veggie parts before I put them in my mouth. Only with less bbq sauce.0 -

usually between $5.99 and $9.99 per pound...haha0

Wow... so being vegetarian/vegan makes you a better person? You really do deserve a kick in the head if that's what you think.0

$8.99/lb is about the price for meat.
Beat me to it!
I have seen Food Inc. and others like it. I still eat meat. I just buy it local, grass fed, etc.
I drive by cows in a field from the local place and I wave at them and tell them they will be delicious when I eat them next year.
These cows live a happy life in the sunshine. And I am thankful for them as I grill them up.0 -

I find bananas repulsive, but I don't go around wondering how people can stand to eat them. To each his own, sweetheart. Your judgmental holier-than-thou attitude will win no one over to your opinion.0 -
My family has been vegetarian/vegan for 25 years now and it has been a great blessing. There are typically three reasons people come to this change in diet and lifestyle ... health, environmental and treatment of animals. For me there is a fourth which encompasses all three of the above and it is spiritual. Knowing that my food choices make me healthier, are good for the planet and respect all other living things on the earth is wonderful gift. I have long avoided arguing about the issue but would prefer to lead by example. Peace ...
Sorry - I am the reason number 4.....or 5 if you count the spiritual one?
I don't eat meat because I think flesh is nasty. I KNOW in my head and heart humans were MADE to be omnivores. I just can't bring myself to do it, it's gross and nausiating to me. Not that I don't 'care' about the animals, but I believe God did put them there for us to sustain ourselves. I just can't do it. I don't get upset with those who do...I simply ask my husband to do most of the meat handling - my poor daugther doesn't get much meat since he travels Mon-Thurs lol.0 -
Sorry, I couldn't read your post past the first sentence.
All your posts (that I've read so-far in this thread) are self-righteous and a bit mean-spirited.
Edit: Though I agree with the 'stop with the meat pictures' thing you just posted.
Well isn't that charming of you to say?!
"Is your daughter teenage? It is very common for teenagers to become anaemic as their bodies get used to having periods. Anaemia is not limited to vegetarians." My first post on this thread. Is that mean spirited?
Second post on this thread "No they don't. Lions kill with a quick bite to the back of the neck, severing the spinal cord. Same as domestic cats." Merely stating a fact. Is that mean spirited?
Third post "When people say they were unhealthy, anaemic, had vit B12 deficiency (seriously? I have NEVER heard of that one anywhere but here, and I know many many vegetarians), it is clear they just weren't doing it very well. If you eat junk, you'll be unhealthy. Doesn't matter if that junk is vegan or not. If you eat healthily, you won't get deficiencies. The fact that most vegans manage perfectly fine and are in fact of above average health pretty much clinches that one." Again, if you could point out where I am being mean in that one, that would be great.
I have no idea what you are reading, but I don't think it's my posts.
I apologize for not going back and not quoting every single one of your posts that have bothered me.
It was the comment about Europeans having better diets than Americans that finally broke my camel's back. That is why I couldn't even read what that particular argument was about. It was SO pretentious.0 -
For all who watched Food Inc. you know as well as I do they only went by certain food chains not all farms were featured. People on this earth have eaten meat to survive. If you choose not to its your decision, but I do not attack people for eating meat and I do not attack people for being vegetarians or vegans (unless they come at me first). I choose to eat meat (not red meat for health reasons) I find it a great source of protein. A friend of ours after watching Food Inc. decided to buy his meat from a grass fed farm and he gave us some to try. It was the worst meat I have ever had and it had the most fat I have seen (Notice how I said I). As far as being animal lovers you can love animals and eat meat. A lot of times it is necessary for animals to be hunted and what better way than to be used for food at least it is not going to waste. It makes me come back to the deer population certain times and certain places the population is too large and they are a danger to themselves and to us. I am sure everyone has an opinion on this, but really think what you say because I have read some really nasty comments regarding this subject and unfortunately there is not a correct answer. I lived with a vegan for 4 years in college and not only did she throw out food I had bought because she didn't think meat products should be anywhere near here she also had health issues. Here teeth enamel was thin and had some fall out due to lack of calcium (she did drink protein shakes everyday) and her liver enzymes were really high. I have also seen the effects of too much meat have on peoples system especially some of the fattier meat and cholesterol level. To each their own and the movie Food Inc is interesting and definitely brings to light what is in the grocery store and it even highlights a few of the local farmers in certain areas.0

LOL @ Gordo You remind me of my husband (this is meant to be humorous not offensive) I became a vegetarian during that biology fetal pig dissection we all have to go through. I txtd my hubby a pic...he said "bring me some bacon". I haven't eaten meat since. (At least not on purpose, I got tricked and sick once)0 -

Vegetarianism, veganism, raw-foodism, whatever, is not for everyone, nor does everyone a) think those food pictures looed "disgusting" or like "burnt muscle fibres," or b) think, "Yum! Dead body!", or c) would be turned off meat eating by someone such as yourself saying, 'Hey! You're eating a dead body!"
Yes. I know it's animal that I'm eating. I'd rather it be dead than alive when it's on my plate.0 -
Oddly enough, I've seen less harsh reactions to drinking pregnant lady pee than beef, chicken etc..0

I'm a vegetarian with only one other vegetarian friend so the majority of the people in my life are meat eaters and that's fine, they eat they're way , I eat my way. However a few points to make: my neice who is NOT a vegetarian became anemic and the doctor recommended DATES to remedy it because they are high in iron. I've never been anemic and I eat foods fortified with B 12 and just had bloodwork done and my levels are great. So being vegetarian does not necessarily mean anemic vitamin deficient.
And to the person who said "if we weren't supposed to eat animals why did God make them out of meat"....dogs, cats, and humans are made out of meat too....please don't tell me that means we should be eating them too.0
