I just came from watching the "Lorax" and had 2 hot dogs, a tray of nachos and cheese, popcorn, Milk Duds and Raisnettes along with a diet Cherry Coke........................total calories 1856. And I still have room for dinner.

I definitely treat myself but you have to remember that you would never tell an alcoholic that just one drink won't hurt them. To some people sugar and food is an addiction and having one candy bar or pigging out one day can send them back into unhealthy habits.0

Oh, christ! I'm not saying constantly eat fatty or sugary foods all the time! I mean lighten up and allow an occasional treat. You can still lose weight and enjoy a treat now and then.0 -

I happen to agree with the OP that when dieting/exercise begin to take all of the joy out of your life, then you are doing something that is counterproductive. Not once is she suggesting binge eating or going completely overboard - she is suggesting MODERATION and remembering what life is all about. Making yourself miserable (and those around you) just to be thin is not healthy.
If you are NOT miserable with what you are choosing to eat/not eat, then HER POST WAS NOT DIRECTED AT YOU. If you are happy with your choices, then you are not one of the people who whine about it.0 -

You're right.
A lot of people take it too seriously. they eat 1 chocolate bar and say oh I'm a failure when they are within their goal, or just slightly above it...
i understand if you binged but having just one? Naaaaaaah you'll not gain weight with just one. It takes a life time to gain a s**t load of weight! So the weight you lost, it wont suddenly come back by having one.0 -
Great original post, I totally agree. A lot of the time the guilt and pressure that people put on themselves is more damaging than the offening item / meal / day.0

Maybe you don't understand that for some people it's all or nothing. Could I eat one cookie out of a package I brought home? Could I eat just one piece of cake? One candy bar? I'm not sure if I would have the strength to eat just one of anything, therefore I don't. I also think that once I ate one I'd want more...even on the next day. I'm glad you have the strength to do it.. more power to you but don't judge others because they can't. It's not just about eating healthy and exercising. Sometimes it's a mental issue too.
I do however agree that you can't have the mindset that you're on a 'diet' and can't ever eat certain things. It's a lifestyle.0 -

If this works for you, great. But this type of thinking is how I got to weigh 344 pounds. I can't cheat. I can't allow myself "once and a while" to eat like that. For me, it's like an alcoholic having a beer "once and a while". So I choose not to indulge and that's how I have lost over 200 pounds. It doesn't make me mentally ill or uptight.
So if it works for you, great, but as for me, I'll stick to not cheating.0 -
This is a great post, but it took me a while to get a hang of this and realize its a lifestyle change not a diet I'm going to be on forever. So I most definitely indulge every now and then, but everyone is different and needs to do what works for them even if it's being obsessive about counting calories0

it takes all sorts to make a world and thats why MFP is so great because we all do our own thing and as long as what we do does not harm or effect anyone else thats fine .....so if people want to worry about what goes in their mouth thats fine and if they want to eat a takeaway or chocs thats fine too.....its all about freedom and whatever floats your boat and I dont think people should criticise anyone for their personal choices that after all is THEIR choice.
I don't think the OP was criticizing anyone's choice.
I took it more to be critical of people who have excessive amount of guilt or angst over something that is not guilt-or-angst-worthy.
The biggest battle in all of this for all of us is psychological. It's our own perceptions. If we perceive that eating a candy bar is the wrong thing to do, we're going to think we're failures. And as long as we failed and at one candy bar, we might as well have a dozen. It's not an all or nothing situation like that. Even if we do have a major binge that lasts for months on end... it's only a failure if we let it defeat us. Until you quit, it's not a failure. It's ... a detour.
It is a fail if you have a binge that lasts for months. You convince yourself that you failed and then continue binging for months until you get it together again. This is called yo-yo dieting. If instead you had a guilt free binge or treat thought nothing of it and went back to eating to lose weight then you win.0 -
I will err on the side of caution before reading any responses to your post. I feel as though, judging by length, you could have gotten flamed for this one, but I don't know. All I will say is, yes we all need balance, so this effect, I agree with you. NOW I will go read, lol
Also remember, eating good foods should not be equated with a punishment. my best advice about weight loss is eating foods you like. I've added loads of foods I did not like or thought I did not like, and I enjoy them. I enjoy that I feel good about their nutrient content and that it's helping me accomplish a few very important things, staying alive for one (at it's most fundamental level) and being filling enough for me to remain at a deficit for weight loss. food isn't an enemy, enjoy it. still remember, treats aren't always candy or sugar coated, good things can make you just as happy to eat.0 -

Some of you take calorie counting and weight loss far too seriously.
Remember, you are human and you only have one life to live. Do something with it!
Don't spend all your time obsessing over carbs and macros and calories. I hear some of you saying 'oh, it's my friends brithday and I can't have any cake' or 'my partner just ordered takeaway and I'm not allowed to share it with him!'
Wrong.
You cannot - SHOULD NOT - let calorie counting rule your every waking moment. You can't do this to yourself! You're human and deserve to let yourself enjoy things in life. Stop depriving yourself of enjoyment and experience because 'there's too many calories' in it.
Some of you just eat fruit and vegetables and protein all the time.

Christ, treat yourself to a chocolate bar now and again. You deserve it! You shouldn't feel like you have to deprive yourself of anything!
One Kit Kat Chunky will not make you gain 10lbs instantly. It can be good for you - boosting your metabolism, and make you feel better for earning it.
If you're losing weight properly (1 or 2lbs a week, not crash dieting) then a little treat will not make you gain weight!
Please, you're human. Enjoy being human.
DISCLAIMER: Obviously, I'm not saying eat junk all the time. But you should allow yourself a treat. Deprivation never works. Trust me.

I agree with not beating yourself up when you have a treat but I don't agree that everyone needs to have a treat. If people are happy eating protein, veg an fruit all the time without an urge for a treat then that's fine.0 -
