Ok, Douglas Adams is great... But it's kind of the lowest level of geekdom, like wearing "no, I will not fix your computer" t-shirts your mom bought you from ThinkGeek, or having ever played Nintendo. There is nothing wrong with these things but I don't think they're particularly geeky or nerdy.

What's your favorite sci-fi novel or series? Anyone read the Hyperion quadrilogy?
Berserker Series by Saberhagen (also read the sword series)

Fantasy, umm, wow, that's a lot to choose from.

Lord of the Rings, truly epic in the original sense
Song of Ice and Fire, awesome series
Magician series, and really anything by Feist
The first three series by Eddings
Chronicles of Narnia (the "first" book is the best)
    Runelords series
    Sword of Truth series
About a dozen more that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Second that and add to all of that an unabiding passion for Douglas Adams. Will have to google Ross Whedon though, never heard of the fellow

this made me cry a little bit.

Oh, and Terry Pratchett is soooo much better than Douglas Adams...just sayin'.

Oh, and as a bonus, my senior paper in high school was on the difference in writing styles and "voice" between fantasy and science fiction.

Add Asimov and Heinlein and HG Wells to my list of favorites too :P

Oh, and Bradbury, really the list is endless.

TERRY PRATCHET - OMG - yes, yes, yes - not better but absolutely up there!

On the Joss Whedon thing though, I'm embarrassed, I have watched soooo much of what he has done and never knew he was the man behind it. :embarassed:

I'm a huge Lovecraft fan and no, not just for the cute Cthulhu plushies. Lovecraft was the only reading that ever kept me awake at night. Creepy brilliant stuff.

I don't know any nerds on MFP but I think a hard working, driven educated man is sexy. Where are the nerds at?

I listen to a podcast "Stuff You Should Know" from HowstuffWorks.com... while I workout. When I was 4 and 5, I used to quote Captain Picard's opening monologue with him during the start of Star Trek every evening.

    Nerditude: got it! :glasses:
