One year today!
I'm so happy with the progress I've made so far, and pleased that my confidence in myself has grown. After decades of yo-yo dieting I felt defeated and hopeless, but I decided a year ago to only practice positive thoughts about my future. As a result, my thinking habits have actually changed and I no longer fear failure.…

Intermittent vs. Continuous Weight Loss
An Australian study indicates that switching between calorie restriction (2 weeks) and eating at maintenance (2 weeks) improves weigh loss results in men. Any science geeks in the community want to offer an opinion on the good, bad and ugly of this study? The MATADOR (Minimising Adaptive Thermogenesis And Deactivating…

Sugar Alcohol?
Does anyone have personal experience with negative effects of sugar alcohol on weight loss? I've been losing a pound a week for many months, and now for three weeks, no loss. Three weeks ago, I started eating a protein bar or ice cream sweetened with sugar alcohols and monk fruit. My calories are the same, and activity is…

What piece of advice helped you break through?
Sometimes, it's something a bit obscure or mundane that someone says that suddenly makes a difference in how we relate to food. Other times, it's a gloriously epic motto or mantra that helps shape and steer our thinking and behavior. What has really resonated with you as you seek to change habits? Here's mine: I shared…

Impatience!
I'm curious how others deal with being impatient about progress. Once in a while I long for those first four months of dieting when I was dropping 8 - 10 pounds a month. Now I drop only 3 -4 per month. I know that's a decent amount, and the way I'm eating is really satisfying most of the time. I appreciate that the habits…

Pre-diabetes/metabolic syndrome, how often do you eat?
One registered dietitian I saw recently advised me to eat 5 - 6 times a day and never more than 400 calories per meal (for women.) The goal of eating this way was to keep blood sugar stable. Another RD advised 3 meals a day, no snacks, even for diabetics. This particular RD also does intermittent fasting herself, but does…

"You've changed your hair..?"
I've been amused lately by how many people are commenting on my hair. I never get comments on my hair, and now in the last 2 -3 weeks, five people have complimented me on my hair, or asked me if it's shorter. My hair is not different. It's my face. It's thinner, but I just smile and say, Oh yeah, I'm trying something a…

Scents Worth
I spilled some vanilla scent on myself earlier today, and I've been smelling it all day. It doesn't make me hungry, but actually is making me feel like I'm continually enjoying something yummy. It makes me wonder what others have discovered about the merit of using scents and fragrances while dieting. Is there a scent that…

"My Foods"
I've used MFP for years, but what I really want to do now is create a list of my regular foods that's easy and quick to use, alphabetized by the name of the food, not the brand, "organic" "steamed" "raw" and so forth. And I want to only include the foods that I've crossed referenced to make sure the numbers are correct. Is…

What a nitwit!
I've had a major light bulb moment with weighing my food. I can't believe how long it took me to figure this out and it's embarrassing, but funny at the same time. Can you believe that I would put a measuring cup on the food scale, zero it out, then fill the cup with yogurt, record the number of grams, scrape out the…

Potassium, Weight loss and Beet Greens
Since hearing that most people in the US are potassium deficient, I did some research to find out how I could get the recommended 4700 mg per day. Getting enough doesn't actually create weight loss, but it supports muscles to make workouts more productive, and there are lots of other health benefits too. Unfortunately,…

Veggies for Breakfast? Tell me how!
I'm ready for the next big challenge in adopting new habits. If you eat veggies for breakfast, do you have tips for the beginner? Should I have cooked veggies on hand and scramble with egg? That will work once in a while but not every day. Can anyone coach me on this? Thanks!

How do I find a particular group?
I was invited to join a particular group, but there doesn't appear to be a search feature where you can enter the name of a group to find it quickly. I don't want to go through hundreds of pages of un-alphabetized group names ... Can anyone help?

Eating to protect stomach from meds - help!
I have a condition that currently requires me to take meds 6 times a day that could potentially harm my stomach. Since I have to eat 6 times a day with the meds, I've been consistently going over my calories because I don't know how much or what foods will best protect my stomach. (i.e: Is a cup of broccoli enough, or is…

Help with editing MFP "meals" please?
I'm hoping someone can help me. I've been on this site over 4 years now and have accumulated lots of entries in the "Meals" category. I'd like to delete the meals I no longer use, or at least rearrange them so I can find my current meals at the top of my list. Am I missing something obvious?

What feeds your heart?
After my first ever binge-free Christmas, I'm still finding it hard to forget about the food my nostalgic heart wants. I have to stop believing the lie that the heart can be fed by food. There are so many other worthwhile things that truly feed the heart. Conversations with friends, acts of kindness, doing something…

What's your mantra?
What are some positive, encouraging words you say to yourself to keep yourself motivated? What's your mantra, slogan, motto, catchphrase? I'm attending two events with buffets this weekend - yikes! - and I may need to borrow a few new mantras!

Need Successful Friends!
I've been having some successes lately, but my friends are not, or at least they're not posting successes. Lately, I feel insensitive if I comment about a weight loss or personal victory. It would be nice to have some friends who are also currently "ON" their diets and doing well. I'm not always having a successful streak…

What do you eat when you're hungry at bedtime?

Calories in fresh coconut water
Hi. Is anyone an expert on coconut water calorie content. I opened a fresh coconut today and out came 16 ounces of juice, which I immediately enjoyed. But logging it is a mystery. MFP has calorie counts ranging from 74 - 325 for fresh coconut water. And sugar content ranges from 0 to 24 grams. Any advise is appreciated.

Frozen spinach in smoothie!
Just thought I'd share an idea: I enjoy a meal replacement smoothie w/ MRM protein powder nearly every day. I cram it full of whole foods like raspberries, bananas, almond butter and greens. I've often wondered if I could put frozen spinach in the smoothie rather than fresh, and I finally had the nerve to try it today. It…

Fro Yo...do you believe the posted calorie content?
Today my options were limited for lunch, and I was hungry, tired, and short on time. I caved and had a "carb-lite" frozen yogurt. The 8 oz size that really holds 16 ounces, was supposedly only 152 calories...total!! I was full after 16 ounces, and wasn't really that hungry for dinner. By the time dinner rolled around I'd…

Tracking Fruit Calories - Edible Portion only?
When I track calories from fruit, I weigh only the edible portion of the fruit. Is this correct? If not, I'm under reporting my calories, because an orange weighing 200 grams, only has about 130 grams of edible fruit. Does anyone know??

Anyone trying "The Amen Solution?"
I've been reading "The Amen Solution" which is interesting to me because I need to strengthen my brain as well as lose weight. You work at both on this program as well as focusing on your motivation, retraining negative thoughts, meditation, exercise, etc. Dr. Amen says an obese person's brain generally looks 16 years…

Abnormal brain growth leads to obesity?
I got an email (ad) from Lumosity today that quoted a 2012 study from Nature Neuroscience that linked high fat diets to neurogenesis and obesity in mice. No, we're not mice, and no I'm not promoting Lumosity brain games, but I found this study intriguing. This is a quote from the Lumosity ad: "The study put mice into two…

Help me with beans for breakfast, please!
I've just been reading about how people all over the world, except the US, eat beans and toast for breakfast. I'm posting at the crack of dawn in California, hoping to catch the non-American community. How do you do it? Drain and rinse some Garbanzos and let them roll around on top of your toast? Mashed Pintos? Black beans…

Do hunger hormones make us fat?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17431970 Does anyone know of a counter argument to this article that claims that brain cells and hormones in our stomach lining control our impulses with food? After gastric bypass surgery, it is said that the hormones ghrelin and PYY come into balance, and thus turn a compulsive over-eater…

Truthful food labels?
I generally try to stay away from packaged foods, but I use the once in a while, and wonder how accurate the food labels really are. Does anyone remember a news story about how an ice cream company got caught mislabeling, and was grossly under-reporting calorie content? It was about 10 years ago, but it always stuck in my…

Lowering Cholesterol thru diet alone
I'm interested in hearing peoples stories of reducing their blood cholesterol through diet alone. Like this: Beginning Cholesterol numbers: LDL size pattern (If you had a VAP test) Beginning weight: Age: Factors that affect you personally, i.e. diabetes: Brief description of diet, including how well you adhered to it: (If…
