Backpacking Yellowstone/Grand Teton
We are taking a family trip to Yellowstone/GT next summer. There is no way I'm making that trip and not doing some backpacking. I haven't backpacked in 20 years. But in preparation for this trip my brother and are doing a trip in a week and a half, and we'll do a longer trip in the spring before it's game time in YS/GT in…

Jump Rope!
I just cut up some old climbing rope I had into a jump rope. I'm going to use it to warm up before lifting weights. I may even get a wild hair and inorporate into my regular work out. It burns a ton of calories. Anyone else use a jump rope?

Route Tracking Apps/Websites
Last week I was editing my routes on the website I use to track such stuff. I noticed everyone who searched my city could pull up my routes, so I quickly changed the profile setting to something more private. Then I ran across this article today about bicycle thefts via Strava in the UK. I figured a lot of people who read…

Introduce Yourself
As you might imagine, with a screen name like mine I joined this group as soon as I saw it. I'll just paste this portion of my profile: "I have a hard time staying focused on one activity. What I'm focusing on changes from time to time. I enjoy Mt Biking, swimming, camping, hiking, weight lifting, rock climbing, and…

Are you tough enough?
I read this blog called Adventure Journal almost everyday. Today there is a post about being tough. It has some climbing jargon I don't understand but the message is still clear. I know it motivated me, maybe it can motivate you. http://www.adventure-journal.com/2012/04/are-you-tough-enough-the-answer-is/

Transition One
I've been training for an indoor triathlon this Sunday. I call it a starter triathlon. 500 yrd swim, 6 mile stationary bike ride, 2 mile run on a track. This will be my first triathlon. I started practicing my transitions in mid to late December, and I've put all three events together 5 or 6 times. Progressivly getting…

Kansas Residents!
I started a group in the group section: It's open to anyone. Even if you don't live here. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/541-people-of-the-south-wind-kansas I figure if Missouri has two groups, we at least need one.

Weight Lifting Irony
Time waits for no person. Part of the reason I lift weights is to keep the aging process at bay for as long as possible. Which is why I find it ironic that several hours after lifting I appear to have more trouble getting out of my desk chair than co-workers that are many years (25+) my senior.

Financial Cost of Obesity
One of the biggest reasons I wanted address my unhealthy weight was I started noticing a degridation in my quality of life. I couldn't so things I wanted to do because I wasn't in good enough shape to do them. I honestly felt fine, but started noticing more and more missed opportunities. I've always wanted to write a blog…

Running Headlamps
Ok, Not sure what I'm thinking. But I entered a night trail 10K race. A flashlight or headlamp is required. I'm thinking I'm going with a headlamp, but I'm going to run with both during training and see which one I like. Anyone ever run with a headlamp? And Which one do you have?

150 Years of Dieting Fads
Found this article today. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/01/25/years-dieting-fads-quick-fix/ Most of it makes me chuckle. After all of this time, and all the money spent. Eating properly, and moving more is the only thing that works. Imagine that. The article states that 2/3 of Americans are over-weight or obese. I…

Keeping Track of your Workouts
I spent a good hour in the weight room this morning. When I lift I keep a notebook with date/time, sets-reps-amount, and I make notes about how the set went, and weather I think I'm ready to make an increase. There were a lot of people lifting this morning...I only saw one person keeping track in a notebooks, and another…

On Second Thought...
How many of you have a craving for something. You've pretty much resigned yourself that you're going to give into it. You go out of your way to visit an establishment that despenses your particular indulgence....and then you see someone so morbidly overweight that you do an about face, put whatever you were going to buy…

America is getting Fatter
So the CDC says: http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-08-03/obesity-tops-30-in-nine-states-triple-2007-total.html Now, before we blow up the messenger. I understand they used BMI, and other unscientific ways to determine this. However, I have a hard time arguing that this report is not true. Unless you live in CO, and…

Sports Illustrated Success Story
Sports Illustrated does a good job offering special deals if you subscribe to their magazine. Always offering a fleece, or jacket of your favorite team. For the longest time I ignored the temptation because I was pretty sure no matter their largest size it wouldn't fit. Well, back in January I got a letter in the mail…

No Pop/Beer for Lent
I have have the motivation to roll out of the rack at 455am, and run when it's 10 degrees outside. I have the motivation to not eat candy or sweets for weeks on end. I have conqured my love of chicken wings, and almost eliminated them from my diet (like once every 6 months) I have accomplished a lot, and done a lot of hard…

It's Chocolate Cake Day!
Some honk in HR decided it was Chocolate Cake Day here at the office. In our break room there are chocolate brownies, cupcakes, and just plain old cake with icing. I'm not real big on sweets. I haven't had any, and don't plan to. But it's just annoying that in a world where the junk food marketers are much better than the…

Happy New Rear!
I probably won't be around the internet until the end of the weekend. There will probably be an influx of new people looking for ways to help them with their NY Resolutions. To them I say It is possible, just change one thing at a time, and use each day to find some new way to get healthier. To the vetrans. Thanks for the…

Another Couch to 5K Graduate!
I finished the Couch to 5K program about three weeks ago, since then I've been running 5K 3 times a week through all kinds of weather. However, 12 Weeks of training did not prepare me for this. The 5K this morning was at a local lake. I figured the course would just be on the road around the lake, uh uh. It was in the…

Is this a Good thing? Being Hungry all the time.
For the past few days I have been eating my meals like normal. Lunch is typicly 700-800 calories, and dinner is usually 500-600 calories. They are full filling meals with veggies and plenty of protien. However, the past few days 30 minutes after these bigger meals I'm hungry again. I eat, but it's getting to the point…

I just ran 2.5 Miles...but
what if people were shooting at me too. I'd probably pick up the pace a little...I'd probably be hell bent for election sprinting. But I wouldn't have on my asics, shorts, and t-shirt. I'd have on heavy, bulky combat boots...and they'd probably be wet from the weather and from fighting all day. I'd have on another 30 lbs…

Leather Tool Time!
While the weight loss has slowed considerably. (1lb a week as opposed to 3) The last hole I punched in my belt is getting too loose. So it's time for two more. I'll aim for Christmas to punch more holes in my belt, but at that point I should probably break down and get another one. (I do care about my proffessional…
