It is also a good idea to not have your actual picture as your profile picture. There is also a setting that allows you to hide your starting location if you are leaving from your house.
I have a friend who joined a local Strava running group. A gentleman in the online group starting "bumping into her" on her regular runs. He then started showing up at her house unannounced. She had to change her entire running routine and dropped Strava as a result. Be careful everyone!
in addition to this, use the Hidden Locations options. You can hide a radius of up to 5/8th of a mile around set postal codes - this means whilst a person can know the city you live in, they won't be able to see where exactly you start and finish your run, and so figure out where you live/work etc. You can do this for multiple addresses.
I figured out how to set it to Enhanced Security but where is the Hidden Locations option?
Here, this page explains it all:

So a few weeks or so back I got the Garmin Footpod and have been running with it outside in "auto calibrate" mode. It really does not do anything for you if you have a good GPS signal, but it does use the GPS to calibrate the footpod.
Today was the first time I tried it without GPS. I ran on the dreadmill (very expensive fancy one at the gym, not my cheap belt slipping one at home) for my pace work and had these results:
Garmin with the footpod came up with:
Pretty darn close, especially since it took me a few seconds at least to remember to stop the Garmin. And I have this bonus info:
That is probably worthless to me It is pricey for the Garmin footpod, but at least it seems to work as advertised.

Strategies:
1. Socks and Sneakers ready in car
2. Plan to take my faithful companion for walks (well, she probably will just drag me along)
3. Signed up for Charity Miles and other walking/running apps to motivate myself (including logging here)
February goal: 28 miles (A mile a day)
@nefariousjedi Welcome to the Group. Lots of other Non-Athletes in here who also enjoy taking their Hounds out for some quality time.
Also we should warn you about these two things that happen to Runners/athlete's.

@PastorVincent I was thinking about your post on January 27 about the 2 running styles Gliders or Gazelles and was thinking ( man my head hurts now ) that this might show up on the wear pattern on shoes. I am pretty sure that I am more of a Glider since I have to make a very conscious effort to lift the feet higher when doing Trails to clear the Roots, Rocks and other debris on the Trails.
Gazelles seem to have a very strong Toe Oriented Push off - Heel Landing so I expect the Heel and Toes of the shoes to be worn down.
Gliders seem to have a similar push off but Landing more on the Ball of the Foot so I expect the Ball of the foot to be worn down more. Like the shoes you showed a picture of, and in examining mine that's where I have the most amount of wear.
I know a lady in Grande Prairie who runs in the 4:30/km consistently and seems like a Gazelle type form, the toes of her shoes always look like they have worn through the Tread Layer to the Foot Bed sub layer but the ball of the foot looks fine - like the shoes have lots of life left in them. Fortunately she wins enough events that have Shoes as Prizes she usually has a few in reserve.
Just a random thought to start the month.6 -
Hi everyone! I’m new to the challenges. My goal is 50 miles for this month.9

@nefariousjedi - love the picture of your pup! Get her running with you and maybe she won't be dragging you along any more There are several of us here who run with our pups and others who run with pups vicariously through us!

Mines a little devil, after half hour I end up having to drag her home and then she sleeps for almost two days straight!2 -
I'll answer here to post from January.
@7lenny7 , I really should start doing warm-ups, Runkeeper has that option when making a custom workout, but I've been ignoring it... Partly because in the past when I was just starting, 5 minute light jog as a warm up sounded like something impossible.
@shanaber , I do it whenever I think about it, but lazy abs start to slack after 2 minutes or so.
According to PT I'm hypermobile, which in combination with a desk job leads to weak core, and spine not being supported enough. Pain is the worst in the mornings (actually at night as it sometimes wakes me up when I try to roll over) and gets better towards the evening. I try to do core strength exercises every evening, cause I know they help, but lazyness wins sometimes.
@garygse , that's still 2 extra cookies! but actually pretty discouraging math.
@juliet3455 , love the cartoons, especially the last one. :-D
I like this comic A LOT, "kill the blerch" used to be my running mantra.
Welcome to all newbies, take it easy, don't try to run 10K in an hour on your first try. Better run slower than get injured.
Intervals for me tonight, looking forward to 8 minutes super-fast running!

Overslept this morning. Ran anyway. Assignment was 2.25 miles. Did it on the TM at 4.0mph. The incline on last night's short run made this morning's run easier. Almost wanted to run longer than planned. Almost.

my goal this month is to run 90 miles ! lets do this !!!30 -
made it out for a run this morning. I went out about an hour later than usual, and it's amazing how horrid the world is at 7.15am when you are used to being out and running at 6.15am. Too many cars and people starting their daily commute. I'm REALLY not ready for people in the morning. Usually it's just me in the dark and a few dog walkers, and then I get an hour of driving to work to get ready to engage.
several walk breaks, but then I haven't been out for a while so that's fine. Did confirm to me that I take at least 1-2 miles just to get going.
Saw the doctor who confirmed I probably DO have a thyroid issue, and I'm booked for blood tests and an 'emergency scan referral' at the hospital (trying not to worry me for that being at the throat cancer clinic...). I wait to hear how long that could take, 'emergency' probably means sometime in the next three months.....
So basically I feel a bit...jet-lagged it the best way to describe it. That is coupled with constant vertigo like I'm still moving even when I stop. I'm going to push on with running, and just see how I get on. I've never been fast and chances are this will keep me slow (how irritating is it when MFP records me as 'jogging, in place'?).
I'm also taking NSAIDS to deal with the throat swelling, so will need to do some reading up on the impact of that and running.
roll on the rest of February, off to an okay start.9 -
@BrookeRunningMom Congratulations! What a clever way to announce. At first I read your due date as November 8th (I'm in Europe).3

In regards to running shoes, as I'm starting back up, my old road shoes have a lot of miles. I was going to take advantage of some of the Active.com premium member benefits (free fishing license, free pair of socks, $85 off shoes, etc.). But I couldn't sign up because my state isn't listed under the credit card entry for my billing address. I messaged them, and they said they would fix and let me know, but that was about a week ago...0

Almost decided to skip running this morning since i went out twice yesterday but i wanted to start the month off right. Plus im back to working nights so im not sure when ill have time for my morning runs. But i got a quick 3.5 miles done this morning and i am finally back on a good pace. After my 5K and 10K weekend my per mile time dropped by 5 minutes on Monday but today i was back to about a 12 minute pace and i didnt even take a sip of any water the entire run. I also for the first time went out in only a tank top. i usually have 4 top layers when i go running so its nice that my body is finally able to not have to "bundle" up. lol.

Sorry to hear of your thyroid troubles being confirmed @girlinahat . Because of my piri, my shot to *kitten* knees and recently pulling my left hip flexor during speed work (though that is sorted now) I run basically everything on NSAIDs (Naproxen, label name in NA is Aleve). I actually have Naproxen timings built into my long run work.
@BrookeRunningMom so cute!
@abutcher2122 A tank top in February...good grief lol
-28 before the wind this morning, froze most of my face pretty good . Will do my speedwork this afternoon.
@sarahthes through my keto weirdness I made a contact at Running Room Edmonton, now we are working on scheduling me to come into a couple of groups as a guest speaker. Are you kicking around in early March? Team MFP meet up? Haha

SHOES QUESTION
I have seen people that buy the same shoe every time, and even stockpile them in case of discontinuement. These people swear by their shoes and all that.
I have also seen people say that you should change the brand of shoe on some kind of regular rotation as wearing the same shoes over and over is asking for injury. Switching brands makes you use different stabilizing muscles in your foot or something.
Which is more correct? I am probably buying a new street running shoe soon, and have had the same NB shoes the last couple times. My lazy habits just want to shop out the best price on the exact shoe so I can order it instead of dealing with a store.
