I took a quiz to see where in the US I sound like I'm from. Florida, Maine, and Boston were high up there (Boston, really?). Here's the quiz if you guys want something to do: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html
EDIT: Apparently I sound absolutely nothing like people from Detroit.
EDIT2: Took the quiz again and got three cities in California. No matter what it says Detroit is least similar.
I call it soda.
I just took the quiz and got Worcester MA, Boston MA, and Honolulu HI. Worcester and Boston make sense because I grew up in NH and just moved to ME 3 years ago...both states are right near MA. No idea about Honolulu though!
Apparently my dialect is closest to Boise, Reno, or Spokane. I guess I should move in with @Mohouson.
I'm just an hour and half south of Spokane, so you can move in with me and become the pastry chef of the house!
Yes, and I will crash at your place and stuff myself silly with chocolate chip cookie cheesecake bars when I am heading to northern ID to visit family!! I like this plan very much.
Lol! On my way then... Get a bed ready for me, @WestCoastJo820 -

I call it soda pop, but one of my brothers calls it Coke. As in, "What kind of Coke do you want? Sprite or Pepsi?"
If someone asked me that I would have thought they were asking if I wanted fat coke, diet coke, coke zero or coke life. Not a completely different fizzy drink all together, lol
You forgot fat Cherry Coke Vanilla Coke Zero. Which is the best of all of the Cokes.
fixed!
I had a lot of trouble finding my beloved Vanilla Coke Zero last time I was in the US (we don't have it here at all)... hope it's not being discontinued.
Do they make Cherry Coke Zero?! I tried Mr. Mo's Coke Zero and rum the other night and it was decent. I think I could hang with a Cherry Coke Zero if it's available. I could just Google it, but I'm lazy.
It's Diet Cherry Coke. I have a case in my basement, imported from the US naturally.
The sugarfree vanilla version is a Zero.
Confession: I don't understand the difference between Zero and Diet.
Me either!
Diet has aspartame; Zero has Splenda. My 15yo can drink Zero, but diet gives him migraines.
Weird. Here in Saudi Arabia, both the Zero and the "Lite" Cokes contain aspartame, not sucralose.0 -
Can't believe I forgot to tell you all this!!
Remember my special needs boy who almost missed his exam and you all talked me down when I was freaking out about it?! He passed!! That means he's graduated high school, so we are all very, very happy and relieved.

I think I'm going to be making another phone call to Raelynn's doctor tomorrow. This diagnosis of SPD and Anxiety just doesn't sit well with me, I honestly feel there's more than that going on, and it needs to be addressed. I feel that she honestly does have some form/level of autism and it's being overlooked. Maybe I'm overthinking things, but my heart keeps telling me there's more than what they're saying.
As far as the house situation goes, we've decided to wait on that until we get other things sorted out. We looked into it further, and for the payments we would make for 23 years plus the 4K down payment, we'll wind up paying nearly $150,000 for a singlewide trailer, and that doesn't sit well with hubby (or me for that matter). We might just talk to our landlord and see if she'd be willing to let us buy this house from her. I'm not sure yet, but I do know I want to get other things squared away right now. I really appreciate all the well wishes, but I don't think that is in the cards for us right now.

Oh, that STINKS like a dairy barn in the hot August sun!!!!
This made me laugh out loud! Thanks for all of your responses. I guess I can always start looking for a fast food job as the minimum wage for fast food workers just got increased to $15 in New York. I get that people need a living wage but to me this is just ridiculous. That was more than I made when I first started working a couple years ago with a masters degree. Can you tell I feel slighted in all sorts of ways today?! Sorry to be such a downer!
I am also one who envy's the heavy lifters. I love the results that are possible but honestly don't think I would enjoy it very much. I've recently joined a bootcamp class where my muscles are always super sore afterwards so maybe I've found a happy medium. Crossing my fingers I see results soon!
In a place like New York City, how do you live on a wage less than that?
I could definitely understand $15/hr in a place like New York City, but this is for the whole state and I live in rural upstate New York. That wage increase nearly doubles the current minimum wage of $8.75. It just stinks when you spend 6 years and $60,000 on a fancy degree to make the same amount as someone who didn't put that effort in.
I feel like you might be trolling.....but in case you are not:
"At least they listened to us. We're breathing little by little." — Flavia Cabral, 53, a grandmother from the Bronx who works part-time in a McDonald's for $8.75 an hour.
Why does it matter to you what others make? It makes you angry that someone that works a minimum wage job can now feed their kids AND pay their rent? God forbid! It is not like it is coming out of your pocket! And clearly your degree is not all that fancy if you are making $15 an hour......
WHOAAAAA, I thought no judgment? Not trolling at all, this is really how I feel and I could debate it all day but this fun supportive thread is obviously not the place for it. Like I said, I can see $15/hr. downstate but it is a completely different ball game in rural upstate. I really was not trying to start a fight or anything so I'm sorry if you feel that way. To put it as succinctly as I can...it does not make me angry that people can live a comfortable life. It makes me angry that I have spent so much time and money trying to better myself and in a way it's all for naught. Obviously I have some intrinsic motivation to keep learning and bettering myself and that won't change, but what is the point of working hard and trying if they're just going to keep raising the minimum wage and I'll know that I will always be fine? Who wants to work harder and longer and be more stressed when you could get the same just putting in the minimum? I could just skate by with a lot less effort.

I can totally relate. Don't worry there have been disagreements in this thread but we all have to agree to disagree to keep it successful. I know what you're saying though and I know I'll get a lot of hate but when I read your last couple sentences the world socialism came to mind. Like in high school when teachers made a grading curve on tests or papers- why work hard when you know others will and you can do minimal work and still pass! Sorry if I offended anyone too but I very much understand what @levan11 is saying.0 -
Thank you @lbuehrle8! Was just going to edit my post to say "agree to disagree?" at the end. No hard feelings, and definitely not trying to get this thread shut down, I've been reading since page 1!0

Isn't it a judgement to assume someone working a minimum wage job has 'skated by putting in a lot less effort than you"? Or do you personally know every single American's situation and struggles?
I am gonna add here, for the record, that I am not American, but this entire theory boils my blood. If everyone had the means to go get a PHD, who the hell would make your lunch and wash your car? Why do those people not deserve to be able to live comfortably? Do you have any idea how hard that kind of work is? When I was a kid, I worked cleaning hotel room for a few months, that was crazy hard work, much harder than what I do now, yet I did not make as much then (taking inflation into account). You cannot say minimum wage work is not hard (most of it, not all, of course), so why are those people and their lives and needs any less than yours??
Why does it even matter to you or affect you at all??
Also, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't minimum wage a state wide thing? It is not like they can say, ok, in NYC, you can pay this, but downstate you can pay this. So instead of getting upset that someone might get ahead downstate, why not be happy that someone in NYC can have heat next winter???-1 -

Do I need to send y'all a screenshot of my son's ACT scores? He scored a 31 and the school wouldn't even sign him up to take it. I don't know how comparable he is to Raelynn, but a lot of what you write is like déjà vu. Early intervention works. Autism speaks. Ian is its voice saying 'I can do anything.'
You know, I still have the gut feeling that she does have some form of autism and no one is either paying attention or picking it up. I looked up the symptoms of Asperger's and so much of it fits her! I just feel like someone is missing something, because we get asked at EVERY visit if we think she is. I've been thinking that for nearly 2 years, and if that's what they think it is, why won't they diagnose it?!
How old is she? It can be harder to diagnose Asperger's because Aspies communicate well, but very literally. Ian was six when we got the diagnosis. Fortunately, I have friends who are professional educators and we did lots of interventions at home and at his preschool that helped "unofficially".0 -

She turned 3 in May. I've read where it's not common to get an autism diagnosis before 30 months, which would make sense as to why the question was brought up again. What I don't get is the fact that they've tested her multiple times but would never say for sure if she did or didn't have it. I've done a lot of research and apparently it's common for a diagnosis to come around the age of 3, so I'm wondering if she needs to be tested again.
ETA: She has amazing language skills and academic skills for her age. Like, she can make complex and lengthy sentences and speaks very well, but sometimes she can't figure out how to get what she needs to say out, if that makes any sense.0 -

@Italian_Buju -minimum wage nationally in the U.S. is $7.25/hr. States and localities can set it higher if they like. I know, for instance, it's $15/hr in Seattle, but not all of the state of Washington.
If the minimum wage here in TN were raised to 15/hr, I would get a raise and so would most of my coworkers who do not have masters' degrees, except for the nurses. (I have a bachelors.) however, if you think bachelors degree nurses who are making $20/hr vs CNAs who make $10 or people who make $8.75 to transport patients and deliver food and clean rooms are going to stand for not getting a raise if those people do, then you don't know human nature. It's not that all nurses look down on them (some do - I don't like them); it's that they've put years into their education and training and feel that it brings the hospitals and medical practices more skill. And if the bottom gets a raise and so does everyone else to be fair, then how do we contain costs to the patient?
It's a problem, but there are no magic wand solutions.0 -

The problem, is not what you make vs what someone else makes. The problem is that you have CEO's making 8 BILLION dollars a year, while their employees cannot afford food!

I'd also like to point out that it DOES affect me. That money doesn't come from thin air. Everybody will be paying for it in the form of higher prices for pretty much everything. If I am also not getting a raise, that is a double hit to me. Buttttt this is the last I will say on this matter. Zipping my lips, promise!0

Do you not think the prices of things raise during minimum wage freezes? Do you not think it affects those hard working people?
I am literally floored......
I don't care if I get hate for this, but this is one of the reasons so much of the world has such a poor image of Americans and how they think and behave.......
My sister is American, and is a very high up in a very big company and makes a disgusting amount of money, I would be shocked to hear her say something like this.-1 -
My friend posted an app on Facebook that generates something you would say based on your comments. His are hilarious, but mine are all SUPER boring. "Hey, me too!" "Thanks, that means a lot." "I appreciate it." Those are all things I actually said... generate me something random! I get that I don't post on Facebook all that much, but do you have to make me look so boring0

Alright please let's all just agree to disagree about such things. We all come very different cultures and backgrounds and are definitely bound to have different feelings, thoughts, and opinions on things and that's okay. Peace guys0

Umm, there aren't enough CEOs making that much money to make up the difference for every entry level employee to make $15/hr AND give the currently mid-level and lower management people comparable wages. There are overpaid CEOs. Mine is not one of them and in fact is one of the nicest men I know. But even if there were enough of them, you didn't accuse them of looking down at the people who cook and clean and mow for them. You accused people whom I suspect are a lot like me, slogging in the middle class, cooking most of my own food, cleaning my own house, and mowing my own lawn of maybe paying my own teens to do it.
I'm sure you didn't mean to make us feel judged and I appreciate your passion for the less fortunate. (by the way, I do try to help them directly by volunteering my time to a free medical clinic and a few other things that make a practical difference to them.)
P.S. I have this thought that things would improve here if we had term limits and if anyone who left elected office or a high level bureaucratic job for one of those high paying jobs had to surrender their government pension completely and pay a 50% tax for the first 5 years if they or their company attempt to lobby government in any way. We sell access to the highest bidder and that's a damned shame. (for instance, the Treasury Secretary shouldn't be able to work for any bank or hedge fund for 5 years after he leaves office. The job comes with a pension and there is too much inside knowledge for working in the banking industry not to give the bank he or she works for a competitive advantage.)0 -
