What nobody tells you about losing weight

That it's not about miracle packets of foil-wrapped astronaut-food sold by your neighbor or the trainer down the block, or about eliminating an entire category of macro-nutrients your body needs to run every day.
That I can eat a lunch most people would look at and never believe was part of a 'diet'--a big old plate of roasted Brussels sprouts, sweet potato wedges, and rotisserie chicken.
That it's really a lot less complicated than people try to make it. In the immortal words of John Hodgman, one of my favorite comedians (and schoolmate growing up), that I just needed to "stop eating so much *kitten*ing food."
My friend DID tell me this, several times. I just wasn't ready to believe it until this year - I was stuck in the "dieting = misery" mindset and not willing to try. I'm so glad I finally saw the light!12 -
A weird number of my friends now seem overly concerned that I don't eat enough. And are ALWAYS trying to feed me when we hang out. I eat plenty but I think because they see me getting smaller they're somehow convinced I'm starving myself.A weird number of my friends now seem overly concerned that I don't eat enough. I have noticed that. They don't really want to sabotage you, but you're changing before their eyes and I think if they love you it takes a little adjustment on their part too.1 -
So many ambivalent feelings: That after losing a size and getting to wear something that was too tight before, I can see the difference and feel thinner, but the next day, because I have so far to go, I still feel as heavy as ever. That I am so proud of myself for succeeding at this and so disgusted with myself for letting it get that far. That some days I think I look awesome and other days not so good. That some days I hurt and don't want to exercise but after I start walking it feels good. Mostly though, I'm extremely grateful to be getting better and losing weight both.31

Fleece is my new best friend.
Despite reading about this a lot in this thread, I have been going around thinking that it's actually cold. I just realized today that *it* isn't cold, but, rather *I* am cold. I'm FREEZING, actually. Who knew?!
I hope that happens for me because I have not been able to wear long sleeves in years, except as a jacket, due to an illness. I'm hoping getting thin will help that.1 -
I stopped knocking stuff (or small kids) over when I turn around or bend over to pick something up. I also stopped delegating to my kids stuff I should do myself (e.g., can you get me X from just over there). I'm no longer looked at as lazy by my wife.
I don't hesitate to go up and down stairs to do stuff.
I've accomplished more work on our hobby farm (e.g., constructing animal shelters) myself.
My shoestrings, when tied, are not on the sides of my shoes anymore (I used to call them fat-guy-tied because I had to sit down, cross my ankle over my knee by pulling up on my pants leg, and tying the shoe strings on the side of the shoe). Now I can comfortably kneel down and get up to tie my shoes, or just bend over to tie them.
My energy level and mental focus has improved.
My physical balance has improved. Putting on clothes that require bending over (besides shoes) has become easier (pants and the like).
Getting down on the floor to play with my kids and getting back up again is no longer a chore and require three of them to help me up.
Hat size has gone up due to swelled head when someone notices my weight loss.63 -

I thought I was the only one.17 -
For guys: notice how the "man bulge" in slacks looks much more prominent with the weight loss... I guess it's attributed to weight distribution and shrinking fat pad.. haha9

How much math is involved! Ok, I had 7oz of this 12oz meal which equals how much of a serving??38

I second what our @jaydedMiss & @jejjreyOC just said. You arrive at your goal and reality sets in. You can only improve what God gave you in the first place. Keep up the exercise as that will help things "settle", and serve yourself a big serving of acceptance and gratitude...and smile. You did it!12

I just hit the cold all the time phase a couple weeks ago. Hubs had started complaining about me adjusting the thermostat and told me to start wearing more clothes in the house. I guess this winter I'll be wearing a few more layers than I have in the past!!! ;-)11

I mean complete strangers have commented, cashiers at the grocery, dentist etc, so it's not as if you can't tell I've lost about 40 pounds [...] I realized that my success made her feel like a failure, in her mind. The last time I saw her will be the last time.
I hope you are confident that is the reason before dropping your long-time friend. I know for me, I often dont even see hair style/color changes on friends and family until someone brings attention to it, and it takes a while for me to pay attention to any weight change, and i say very little about it- because the outside is not really what i see about a person! Im so busy paying attention to what they are saying/doing/being that i really dont care how they look or what they wear. Ill see that stuff on a stranger, because i dont know them as a person, so that's all there is, what's outside. It doesnt change who they are to me, I care about them just the same. If they wish to talk about it, sure Ill be happy to tell them they look good, but for someone I know well and choose to spend time with, I am not concerned with how much they weigh, because that is their business alone.
Just saying, because it doesn't automatically mean a person feels guilty or jealous because they don't comment on your appearance.
I am greatly enjoying this thread, but it's gonna take a long time to get through it!
Im pretty much just starting on my weight loss journey because I have a long way to go, so the only things I have noticed I didnt expect is that my taste is changing, and I get full so much faster!
Oh and for the single ladies who are suddenly noticing guys hit on them- I hope you disregard any who didnt take interest until you lost weight! If they are genuinely interested in you they would have been interested before you lost the weight. Do you really want a guy that shallow? Are they going to drop you if something bad happens and you regain weight? Just something to think about.

With all due respect, as the daughter and niece of longtime wheelchair bound women (advanced MS), you are incorrect in your statement. [...]I'm sorry, but as one who lives closely with disabled people, I find your attitude disappointing.
Well said. Plus the OP lists arthritic knees being cause for 'difficulty getting around' - this isn't the same as being in a wheel chair. Plus... Obesity IS considered a 'handicap' depending on the severity.
Just had to chime in on this, although it's probably been talked to death in later pages (Im on page 7 what can i say) that regardless of whether you can consider it a "handicap", I was in a public ladies room a few months ago, and they made the stall so freaking small I literally could not fit through the door... it was mortally embarrassing, though thankfully no one else was around. So I just gave up and used the handicapped stall. If they wanted able-bodied folks to use the other ones, then they need to make them so more people can FIT in them!
***eta sorry if this is like necro-posting, I *just* realized at about page 10 that this thread started over 2 years ago! No wonder people's mentioned ages dont match their profile!7 -

It's one of a few long-running threads... I like it! Check out this one too, another of my favourites that's been going two years and is now over 450 pages...4 -
that you can keep getting stretch marks at a lower weight, if you let yourself to start getting squishy again. even with no significant weight change (same 3-4 lbs repeatedly).4

It can be jarring to see the change in the mirror. I've only lost a little weight, but two days ago I noticed my face starting to change. I had a more defined jawline and hollows under my cheeks. I was scared! I ran to my boyfriend who reassured me that it was because I've been working hard and, no, I probably won't look like a skull at the end of this.
I didn't realize that I'd be afraid of the physical changes because I want to lose weight so badly.18 -
I've lost 28 pounds it doesn't seem like a lot but I'm 5'3 . While I was at the gym today doing sit up my tailbone was really bothering me I realized all the xtra cushioning I had before lol I had to double up the mats14

Putting on a pair of what were "Comfortable" flats for Christmas shopping. Didn't realize you could lose weight like that in your feet! By the end of shopping I could no longer walk as my once comfortable shoes now gave me blisters, ouchie!7

I now understand why previous posters were so excited about the appearance of collarbones, i can just see mine reappearing and i cant stop touching it.25

Ditto on the damn feet thing. Never knew my feet were fat but my slip on dress shoes don't fit right anymore.
And I swear I'm down a cup size in the chest area. Of course I'm a guy so this is a good thing.53 -

That there is such a thing as diet fatigue/MFP obsession (logging) and not having any idea what to do about it.
Grateful for my weight loss and feeling healthier but this is the biggest bump in the road I've come across since I started!20 -
Finally not worried about the weight limits of my ladders.22
