What nobody tells you about losing weight

I've always had muscular legs. Firm. Now that I've lost 22 lbs I notice my thighs are dimpled, cellulite...seriously dimpled. I don't know if it's my age (65) but I hope it goes away.5

So funny you posted this today! Just yesterday I noticed how weird and squishy and bumpy my arms are underneath suddenly! Hoping its an approaching whoosh and not permanent!
Me, too! Last time I was fixing to have a woosh my back started sticking to my mat and making farting noises during classes. It’s started doing it again. It’s embarrassing but it makes me randomly giggle. I’m sure they all think I’m nuts because I’m always noticing something new going on with my body and laughing inanely. I noticed my butt suddenly feels like orange peel, too.
My new compulsive behavior is prodding my arm muscles. I have several really wierd hard peanut sized lumps on both arms. They’re fairly symmetrical so I don’t think they’re anything to worry about, but they feel so wierd I’ve started unconciously digging my fingertips into my arms when I talk to people.
Hahaha this made me laugh - we are all nuts! It's like we are part of some weird experiment that we caused but can't control 😁8 -
It’s cool when you see someone you haven’t seen in a long time and they don’t recognize you!14

Nobody told me that body charts for weight are not accurate when it comes to my body and that I was chasing someone else’s idea of how much my body should weigh without taking into consideration my health, look and my body’s comfort. So I don’t have to reach no ones goal from a chart for my weight! I need to reach the weight that it’s good for me even if it means going without a six pack.17

Read the “Firm fat vs jiggly fat” thread over on the General Diet & Fitness board. It talks about this exact thing.

That not everyone will be happy for you. I can relate because I had to push down feelings of jealousy when I was larger and watched friends lose weight.
I try to be very aware that when others seem dis-interested or unsupportive sometimes it’s because of their own negative voices.

I've never had muscular legs no matter what workouts I do. I don't lift heavy though. Tried it for a while and simply hate lifting. I'm 40 and have always had cellulite and have always been envious of those who have beautiful firm legs! I'm embracing my imperfections these days, cellulite be damned!12 -

Yet I've noticed my wedding and engagement ring are loose on my ring finger. It's very annoying when I'm typing, which is 40 hours a week, and I get nervous now about wearing them in the shower. Also my shoes are a bit loose, which is mostly only a problem with ballet flats as those can slip off suddenly while walking. And it's much easier to correct my posture by aligning my pelvis properly (I have an anterior pelvis tilt) now that there is less weight on my lower belly.
I had expected to lose more evenly on my body than I did. But I've mostly lost in my hips and lower belly, which I understand is what a lot of other women want, but for me - having narrow hips - I still am nowhere near a flat belly despite being 21.9 BMI. And I've lost very little on my upper arms, chest, and shoulders. I can feel my clavicle now...even see it a tiny bit...but well, I guess I got to keep trucking with the weight loss to get those last unwanted pounds off.
Also, I learned that being in a deficit and lifting heavy weights - FOR ME - was completely not going to work. I never worked out when younger, so I have tons of muscle to build. And when I lift weights, I get so very hungry to the point that I end up sabotaging my calorie deficit. So I'll keep up with cardio and light bodyweight exercises until I get to goal, then increase to maintenance calories and lift.
I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring for about 8 months. I sometimes wear it when I get dressed up, I just wear a smaller silicone ring on top of it to hold it on. But it swivels, so I don't do that always. The majority of the time I wear a silicone ring. It's safer in the gym than a metal ring and it allows me to keep wearing *a* wedding ring until I am at a place where I am comfortable resizing my rings.4 -

Hi, Tanya, I’m in the Less to Lose brigade too and have only today made my first posts, with before and after pics that show a smaller loss (28lb in my case) is definitely noticeable:19 -

I think this also goes to show how "easy" it is to gain weight without realizing it, because the close still fit. After my 33 lb weight loss, this is apparent to me as well. While yes, I have tossed many clothing items too big, there are plenty that still stretch quite nicely....no wonder I didn't really notice that weight gain till I saw it on the scale.4 -

Rings are pretty cheap to get resized, maybe 30-$50 depending on where you live.2 -

I have a lot of loose skin on my thighs now. They used to shrink back when I was younger but now they're not. I hope other people are right and things tighten up some after a couple years because right now it's very discouraging. I have 10 more pounds to go so it makes me feel like it's going to get worse.5 -

I am shocked by this. I was wearing size 16 or 18 40lbs ago. I am still wearing size 16! I was expecting a drop in size by now :-\ ! I am 5ft 9...but still!8

This happened to me for such a long time - suddenly the sizes do start to fall. Take a good look at how the s16 sits on you, and what sort of shape those clothes are, some styles are more accommodating than others! I am sure your clothes will fit and look better than they did 40lbs ago. Don't let it derail you9 -

Some clothes are extremely forgiving, and you may simply have a wardrobe that favors that. Also remember women's sizes are almost meaningless because of vanity sizing and hug differences between manufacturers and designers and so on. I lost 40+ pounds and I have labels everywhere from S to XL still...

In my case, there's also the fact that the size I was wearing wasn't necessarily the size I really was. Just because I refused to buy bigger clothes didn't mean I didn't need them The first couple of sizes seemed to take forever. Now it only takes a few pounds to drop, it seems (but I'm just shy of 5'3, so less surface area, lol)11 -

Yeah, I currently have a size 8, 10, 12, and 16 on rotation in my wardrobe. I've lost 40 pounds but can still wear the same yoga pants because those suckers stretched for me.
It also took me a long time to get out of 14-16 sizes. I spent much longer there even though I was losing faster, than I did at size 12 before moving to mostly 10s.9 -

Oh yes, denial was strong with me too. I was always a size 14! You can't tell me otherwise! I don't care that my sleeves are almost cutting off circulation!12 -
I was shopping with a friend at a thrift store and found a top I loved but it was a medium. I showed it to my friend she said it looks like it would fit. I've been an xxl or xl for a long time and have just recently fit into a few larges, so I thought no way. She talked me into trying it on - it fit. I bought it and refer to it as the mislabeled medium. I still have XL's that don't fit. Size differences are SUPER annoying.10

I'm also 5'9". When I am at a higher weight, it takes at least 20 lbs for me to notice in my clothes. It took 35 for me to drop a size. Once I got close to goal (the first time around... I'm back up 30 lbs), it didn't take as much. If I dropped 5 -10 lbs I noticed.6 -

I wanted to wait until I was done losing weight and had maintained for at least 6 months. I don't want to have to have it resized repeatedly, it's already been resized once (to make it bigger). The metal can only be manipulated so much.5 -

It must be a height thing. I'm 5'0", 5lbs changes how my clothes fit. 10-15lbs is a size change for sure.
I have total lost 40lbs, at 35lbs lost I'd gone from a 14 to a 4, an XL to a S/M. At 40lbs, 5 additional pounds lost, I'm now shopping for 2/XS in pants and S in shirts.
The flip side though, If I gain 15lbs, I physically can't wear my clothes anymore. I have to buy a whole new wardrobe or things just won't fit. There is just less leeway for short people. Less area to spread the weight around.11 -
What nobody tells you about losing weight; suddenly everyone around you is an expert at how what you are doing is 'wrong', 'too much' or 'a fad'....even when you lose 43 pounds, look amazing, feel great, and achieve more than you did before physically.
What nobody tells you about losing weight; they are so supportive until you surpass them, then it's all judgement, jealousy, and passive-aggressive commentary.
What nobody tells you about losing weight; its a lifelong battle of wills...with yourself.

This. Bugs. Me. So. Much. I had to endure a bunch of that being refitted for my wedding dress. Everyone around me, overweight (not judging just saying) telling me to stop, that I'm losing all my good bits, that the dress looked better before. And no I'm not anorexic, I was barely at the BMI and etc where I'm not literally considered obese by my DOCTOR. It took a lot for me to face them and say- well I'm going to keep going so...guess I'll just have to be horribly healthy for my own wedding.
Horribly healthy cracked me up and actually made me laugh out loud! Thank you for that! Congratulations on your wedding and on having to resize your dress!
YESSSS I HAD THE SAME EXACT EXPERIENCE! I was SO PEEVED that EVERYONE kept telling me to stop, or saying that now my wedding dress wasn't looking as good, because i lost weight and my 'boobs were gone'. I went from a size 12 to size 6.5, smack in the healthy BMI range, and everyone lost their minds in unhappiness. Crazy. I'm not there anymore, but COME ON.12 -
My realizations about halfway through my weight loss so far (35 down, 40ish to go)....
- My balance is so much better. I can walk up/down stairs without holding the railings, do a quick pivot on one foot with grace, put my shoes/socks on in the mornings while standing and balancing rather than sitting down - It has been a LONG time since I've been able to do these things!
- My body would give me new problems to deal with - After losing the first 20ish pounds, I started having acne breakouts worse than I have ever had in my life. I'm still working through how to manage this, but REFUSE to let it discourage me. I'm hoping eventually it will clear up.
- It is such a LONG TERM COMMITMENT. I had to finally accept that I would need to give myself a lot more time to lose the weight than I wanted - I'm targeting losing 75lbs over the course of 3 years. Then I'm also having to accept the fact that I'm not done after that - it will be a lifelong commitment to maintenance.24 -

It’s not all bad! I was out running Saturday at the park and passed a lady running the other direction. I was thinking, “Gosh, she must work out a lot, she looks great! I wonder what she does? She looks about my age.” And then she smiled and nodded at me like we were members of the same club. Not all women want to cut each other down!34 -
I have also noticed that since I started paying more attention to my appearance and now that the weight loss shows, some mums no longer say "Hello" at the school gate....People definitely pay more attention to me now, so this is deliberate....15
