What nobody tells you about losing weight

That loose skin was even an issue. I'd never even heard of this until a year ago. I was seeing what looked like a weird bit of sagging and turned out to be some loose skin. It's not crazy or anything (yet, I have 40 lbs to go after loosing 68) but I had NO idea about it. I had been larger when I was younger and never saw this happen to me, but I was a lot younger then too and hadn't been too big for very long...

Oh man . . . so this! A couple weeks ago on a rest day, so I knew I wasn't going to be working out, a friend of mine wanted to go get Five Guys Burgers. Which I wanted to because they're one of my favourites. So we went . . . I got a little burger (with only one patty) and we split fries. Although my friend got a regular and ordered the biggest fries they have . . . anyways . . . even though I thought enjoyed the burger while I was eating it, afterwards I hated it. It wasn't good and I was like what the heck did I just eat? And even worse, I was in the bathroom for pretty much 3 days straight afterwards. It was during my personal bathroom time I was like I'm never eating this again. Like it sounds like a good idea to do it once in a while, but doing it once in a while means your body is just destroyed when you do it.
Also, I've noticed a lot of people treat me in two ways: one they're either super nice to me and including me in things I wasn't invited to before and want to be my friend and talk to me OR they're rude to me, and don't wanna see me or talk to me like they're jealous that I've done this. There's people who really treat me like I don't even know what I'm talking about regarding nutrition and working out. It hurts my feelings because I've lost and kept off 80+lbs and work out 6 days a week, 3 of those days are running. I've learned a thing or two. I eat well and I eat real foods. It's just so dumb. You don't have to be tiny to know about nutrition. I know the perception is that the healthier you "look" the more you "know" but that isn't always true, plus I know what it's like to be HUGE and the struggles you will face.
Some of my really close friends - who are my real friends - treat me how they've always treated me and are super encouraging and acknowledge that I've been working hard and am making progress.15 -
That the less fat you carry on your belly, the more bloated you look after a big meal.
When I was bigger I could eat a huge meal and it wouldn't make a difference to my appearance because I had so much padding anyway. Now, without the fat to disguise it, if I eat a large meal I get so bloated I look like I'm heavily pregnant

Oh yes. I only ever bought one thing in McD - the sausage and egg McMuffin. I would occasionally get one for breakfast on the way in to work. The last McMuffin I ate was a few months ago and it tasted like a grease/cardboard combo, I felt like crud all day, plus I was hungry again within 2 hours - it put me off for good.

Getting up in the morning is way easier because the pay off is great! Gotta get the workout in!!!
Eating more protein is difficult... hitting the calorie/macro marks are not always easy and it's not over eating... it's under eating some days! Ugh
Love the confidence... hate when I feel "fat" even though I know I'm not and I'm still doing well... such a horrible mindset

This post is great, I most say I hate the fact that when you begin to change everyone things there is something wrong with you.
The fact that you think you cant do it because people same to find a way to turn you down.
Not this time I am so ready to change, for me my health and not because of how I would look but because of the great I will get from it.

That even though I am happy to have lost 77 pounds (35 to go) and I can see the difference, I no longer feel like me. When I walk or engage in an activity I feel off balance and like I am leaning forward when I walk. It is really odd to feel like a stranger to myself. I expect that it will pass once I get to my goal and stay there a while but for now it is a little disturbing.7

@tatirod I can relate. I had yo yo weight wise for 40 years and about wrecked my health for the last time. It was when I said NO MORE to dieting and HELLO to eating for health that my life/health started to improve.
@NealNH after being at 200 down from 250 (several times) I still see my gut that is not flat yet. There are times I have trouble standing but it is a mental thing not a lack of physical ability to do so. For years it was so painful to just stand and my brain still remembers that. Finally finding a macro that works for me without thought and cravings makes staying on my WOE easy.
I do now notice people who look the way I did. While it is not socially acceptable I often want to share the way I learned to eat especially after I watched them eat at 1200 calorie meal and refilled their large drink twice.
Currently I working on me. Like I was many in the general public or even on MFP just never are going to be motivated to eat for their own health rather than to lose weight so others will like them.3 -
What no one told me... Was how much less space my clothes would take in drawers and the closet. It makes sense, but to actually see the changes? I'm using 3 drawer baby dressernow and it has space... (down to a 10 from a 22)23

I feel much the same way (I'm down 180 with another 50ish to go). My body feels very foreign and just not like "me." However, the further I get from my highest, the better it's getting. Or maybe it's just time working its magic. Congrats on your losses so far, you're doing a great job!3 -

+ That it can be an emotional roller-coaster. Some days you are happy with yourself and other days you get upset because you ate too much or you don't look right or you haven't lost any weight this week, etc. Learn to ride the roller-coaster and don't get off.
+ That it won't magically fix all your problems. In fact, some of my "problems" have come more in focus because of the time and energy I have spent on myself and not "others."
The highlighted sentence is the hardest thing not to do when it comes to the plan and sticking to it!

That since you were heavier for a very long time, it's really hard to see the physical changes in yourself. I am down 59 pounds, but usually feel just as heavy as the day I started. When I look in the mirror, I see the same body I saw 59 pounds ago.
I somehow convince myself that all of a sudden clothes are just running bigger than they used to. For example, I bought one pair of jeans in my smallest size, but thought they must be vanity sized. I bought the next pair in the same size, but assumed they were just ran big as well. It's just hard to wrap your head around it when you see your body in the mirror every single day.

@rbfdac, I know exactly what you mean. I've lost over 81 lbs, gave away all my old clothes and bought an entire new wardrobe in size 4 and smalls. I was convinced at first that everything was vanity sizing at the stores where I shopped until I wore the same size everywhere I shopped! On the other hand, I definitely see and feel the huge changes in my body. I feel and look small, even to me! It's wonderful!14

1. How good it feels to have the self discipline to stick to something that (for me) often seems unachievable.
2. How good it feels to donate the clothes I'm shrinking out of.
3. How even though I don't see a whole lot of change yet, I can vividly see my success. And how much that actually means (if anyone would have told me at the beginning I'd spend 6 months barely loosing 18 lbs and still not look a whole lot different, I may not have even done this! Now I say, BRING IT!)
4. Slow is okay. Though I'd love it to go faster, I will stick to this commitment NO MATTER!
5. Having an epiphany or aha moment really is key!

I was put on a diet by a doctor when I was in the 6th grade because I weighed 160 pounds as best I can remember so this is a life long problem. In high school and most of my adult life I was around 260 to 290 and when I dieted I would get down to 180 but not for long. When I reach my goal I will weigh slightly less than I did in the 6th grade.4 -

SO agree! It is HARD to eat as many calories as I need to eat!!! (I know- tough problem to have, right?) And I DO NOT eat "low fat", but enjoy FULL FAT dairy- and lots of it! New research says it's good for you- and it makes sense to me (skim milk is a highly-processed food). Bizarre that I have lost 28 lbs (Since Jan 1) by eating SO MUCH MORE than I ate when I was heavier- and now my nutritionist wants me to add EVEN MORE food!7 -
That you may reach a day when you will be scared to lose more- b/c you no longer recognize yourself. (I felt that way for a week- but it has passed). Change- even when SO good- can be scary as well as exciting.10

Loose skin is the biggest thing. I knew I would happen but how I still look fat because of the skin.7

-the feeling when you see an old picture of yourself and see how far you've come
-shoe size goes down... This was something I didn't expect hahaha
-feeling guilty sometimes for eating more than you should but should learn to have a healthy relationship with food

@NealNH, I was standing in the lunch line in 6th grade when another student jeered at me "you're so fat, you must weigh 200 pounds!" Little did he know that I had weighed myself that very morning and tipped the scale at 201. I was devastated. Hopefully, another few months and I'll be under my 6th grade weight, too!13 -
How your new, smaller body is still shaped nearly the same, just not as wide.8

After losing 82 lbs. to date, I've discovered jeans can be comfortable and keep me more aware of changes in body. Before always wore sweats at home.

It takes a lot of will power and you just don't get over the discipline needed to continue your maintenance. I have noticed that I don't crave certain foods anymore and have reduced portion sizes. People look at you differently, in a good way. Am trying to get over the yoyo weight problem.

I became overweight beginning in the third grade and your story definitely reminded me of how it felt to be the wrong size growing up. I remember trying to squeeze my knees as close as possible when I sat on a bench with my peers because I was painfully aware that I took up a lot more space than they did. Now I'm always surprised at how much room there is everywhere I go.15 -
