What nobody tells you about losing weight

How easy it is to gain a few pounds back when you've had a few cheat meals in a weekend, lol. Opps. Caught myself and back on board.4

That I notice peoples weight loss/ muscle gain transitions more often.4

I am surprised too that my close friend will not acknowledge my weight loss, but many people that I go to spin class have commented numerous times.21

^^ Yes. When I have my hair done the people who are most likely to notice are those that I know casually. Close friends/family are more focused on my personality than my appearance. The same with weight.
If your close friend is actively denying your weight loss (i.e., saying "You definitely haven't lost weight! You look exactly the same!") then that's another issue entirely.6 -
That although you become more noticeable to men, their pick up lines won't necessarily improve. "Hey, did you know beast mode doesn't end in the gym?" I am still laughing about this one.15

Bahaha. My response to that one would be "So you pee on trees and growl at your own shadow? Sounds like a great time!"5 -

I wish I would have thought of something that clever! I honestly just blinked for about 5 seconds while it sunk in and then started laughing.

All my life I was the "big" sister and now I am the "little" one. The whole family gets weird at family gatherings.HappyCampr1 wrote: »thankyou4thevenom wrote: »midwesterner85 wrote: »You will be hungry pretty much all the time unless you have a cheat day.
Everyone says you will get used to it or if you eat different types of foods (more protein, more "whole" foods, more fiber, etc.), you will feel satiated. They are lying. It will be a constant struggle to decide whether you want to feel hungry for the rest of your life or whether you will be fat for the rest of your life. I'm approaching nearly 2 years, and I'm just over 50% to my goal. It hasn't gotten any easier with time nor with different types of foods. There have been times I stuck with it only because I didn't want to leave my MFP friends.
This might be true for you but it is not true for everyone. Some days are like this for me, however most are not.
Agreed. Most days I'm not hungry. When I am hungry, I know that it's because I didn't eat enough the night before. This is the reason I eat a large portion of my calories at night. Meal timing might not matter for losing weight, but it sure makes it easier for me hunger-wise if I eat enough at night.
Me too! I'm not overly hungry during the day, so I'm trying to save much of my calories for evening time when I know I will want more food....because everyone else is eating dinner. I'm just curious how this will work if I want to do my working out in the morning? We shall see what works best for me. Day 1 (again) so not much to go on.1 -
-It is much more fun to fly these days and I usually have to tighten the seat belt now! That never used to happen!!
-I no longer not only have to avoid all the stores with the cute clothes but I can actually buy the size small in those stores!!
-Most of all I am no longer invisible...people see me and notice me where I feel they didn't when I was larger4 -
I find that as I get smaller (down 55kg /120lbs so far), every dress I try on is too short. I'm tall (6'1), and I thought I'd have more options. Nope. Smaller sizes means shorter length. I want to be able to pick something up off the ground without flashing everyone my underwear. At least all my plus size stuff came to just above the knee.
The attention thing is also starting to happen to me. Especially with having doors held and being let through train doors first and the like. It also means people take the seat next to me on the train in the morning earlier on the route, rather than it being the last seat (well, half of a seat since I took up that much space) anyone wants to take.
According to a friend I still look pretty intimidating though, so at least I don't have random people coming up to talk to me. That part I'm fine with.5 -
I love this thread! I've lost 47 lbs and what I have learned is:
-How much better I like myself now than I did when I had the extra 47.
-I've been told I look 10 years younger...
-How it's hard to believe you've lost the weight until you go clothing shopping and you find out for the first time you've gone down 2 or 3 sizes---it's the best feeling in the world.
-How annoying it becomes when people only comment on your size---they don't ask you about anything about yourself, they just say, "Hey skinny!" or "You've lost so much weight" like that's all there is about you.
-How uncomfortable you make OTHER people when you are eating because it is making THEM evaluate their choices and realize they don't have the self-control or strong will you do.
-When you start getting thinner, people begin to say, "Be careful, you don't want to lose too much weight"--even though you're working with a doctor to manage it all in a healthy way...it is very annoying.
-How much more selection you have when you go shopping for clothing!
-You wish everyone else around you could be on board with you on the being healthy journey, because you feel so badly for those loved ones you know are making bad choices and shortening their lives and livelihood because of their bad choices (my husband).
-How endorphines kick in when you're working out and how good it feels--stress and bad moods just melt away!
-How helpful myfitnesspal is in staying on track.
-And how proud you can be of yourself...and how it is just the beginning of setting other goals.
I could go on!7 -

Try Long Tall Sally: they do small sizes with decent length for tall women.

Amusing thing is that I was at Costco yesterday and the sizing options for the two piece swim suits I was looking at was 8-18. I looked at the 8 and it was clear it was too big. The one pieces started at size 6, which might work, but I don't want a one piece.1 -

Heh, I will be when I'm in maintenance. They're kinda expensive when you're sending to Aus; I can't justify spending that much money on clothing with 20kg more to lose.0 -

I feel like since I've lost weight that I'm smaller than I am. And I know I'm still considered obese but it makes it hard to lose more weight when you feel like you've already lost a lot!7

Me too!! Quick to notice who probably lifts and who is probably a runner, etc...I just notice Fit people more often... half the time if we are in a closed space, I talk to them about it. Lol yep random strangers... Ask them (specifically women.. Don't generally talk to random men) what's their exercise of choice. Thus far, they are only too happy to talk about it!!

That my bra size actually exists now. I am pretty flat chested and no matter how fat I got, those little niblets never got any bigger! So an appropriate cup size only ever came with band sizes that were way too small due to my intense underboob and back fat (I would've needed about a 22AAAA). I made do with crop tops and soft sports bras but the girls never looked nice and I was super insecure about it. Now I can wear real bras. Happy days!9

Love this post ! I've lost 30+ lb but still wabt to loose another 30.
So far my observations are
- more energy , cleaning the house more and actually wanting to socialise
-shaving my bits, actually able to see what I am doing down there
- my partner encouraging me , saying he's proud of me and we're working out together , and an improved sex life
-seeing and feeling the difference in my body , felt a lump in my side in bed and felt sick .... Partner laughed and said it was my rib
-not being totally disgusgted with myself when I see pictures or myself in reflection
-my attitude towards food and exercise has completely changed . I eat for fuel and nutrients not out of boredom
-being proud of my fitness achievements especially the weight training and seeing new muscles develop
-horrible flabby pouch of skin on my top inner thigh that I hated .... It's disappearing !!!
Downside
-certain friends that are too self obsessed it jealous to say anything
-being cold ! Always being hot and sweaty ... Not used to this coldness !!
So all in all I am at a happy place at the moment and I am looking forward to the future ! A leaner fitter healthier me !
Keep up all the amazing work ppl X6 -
How those "NEW" bones I would find being at an average weight would affect me: I literally have bruises on the inside of my knees from sleeping on my side...also how cold I am all the time = BOO.1

You use less body lotion. Down 30 with 75 to go and already use one less pump per leg.13

There will be friends and family who try sabotage your hard work and weight loss. For an example...I am an ice cream addict. People say well just have an ice cream bar....would you tell an alcoholic to just have a shot or little bit? NO...people just don't get it. I lived most of my life thinking a 1/2 gallon was an individual serving.
Amen to this. Amazes me how many have tried, not succeeded , at sabotaging my entire lifestyle change. At a birthday party I brought along some cauliflower, broccoli and carrots in a bowl to snack on cause I knew everyone was eating some highly fattening not to mention greasy burgers, red hotdogs and cake, not to mention nothing but sodas to drink (thank God I was smart enough to bring my water. Never leave home without it) that I exclaimed "does NOT fit into mfp or my life anymore" and was told by some of my best friends that I was doing myself a bigger injustice by inducing all the carbs & natural sugar in the veggies esp since I wasn't even using any buttermilk ranch to offset it with some dairy
@ WHAAAATTTTT!
Well I figured I've lost 32 lbs since January 4th whereas none of them have even tried, am sooooooo much happier & full of energy so I think I'm pretty good with the choices I've made and will continue to make. So much for encouraging friends.6 -

You're always going to be in bigger sizes at thrift stores. I am easily in a size 8-10 in thrift store jeans (I weigh 125) but yesterday a size 6 was too big from JCPenney. Women's sizes have gotten pretty ridiculous with the vanity sizing. When I was in high school I weighed 115-117 and I wore a size 7/8. Someone tell me why the sizes have changed so drastically? Easy- people don't want to buy the larger numbers so the manufacturers have changed the sizing. But if you sew a garment get ready to be surprised- the sewing patterns are based on actual inches and haven't changed at all. Our sewing teacher has girls so upset every year because she will measure them and they have to buy a pattern size 14/16 when they wear size 3/4- she then shows them a skirt she wore in high school which looks very small- it is a size 9. So don't be discouraged by thrift stores- sizes mean nothing. Just go by your weight and measurements.4 -

@dramaqueen45 I read an article that it isn't so much "vanity sizing" but "size inflation". Manufacturers will occasionally take sample measurements of their target demographic and adjust accordingly. As the average american increases in size year after year so does the clothing. Also, different stores catering to different income levels will have the same size number clothing but they will vary greatly. As the price of the clothes increase the clothes get smaller. This is because typically as personal wealth increases the waistline decreases. An example of this is that the Wal-Mart 2XL shirts I own fit me quite well but the 2XL shirts from Target button but are very snug. Any store in the mall that carries 2XL shirts are even tighter for me (if they even carry that size).

I've noticed I felt the cold a whole lot more this winter. My rings are a lot looser- I've had to change fingers to keep from losing them. I've also become reacquainted with my skeleton- my hip bones make it a little uncomfortable to sleep on my side. A new one: since my butt is smaller, I need to drop the steering wheel down to its original position since it's in my line of sight now. Since I've lost a considerable amount of weight, especially on my legs, I'm discovering lots of lovely varicose veins which are visible now. On the positive side, I've been getting more male attention.6

I was most surprised by the amount of negativity I encountered along the way. From blatant attempts at sabotage to open statements along the lines of "I don't like like you losing weight because it makes me feel bad about myself". Also finding out that while most people were very polite about my obese body, people are surprisingly ok with skinny shaming. The only thing I can say is that weight loss is one of the most deeply personal things I have ever done and I did it for me, the right way, and for the right reasons so I was able to shut out the interference for the most part. Do not let anyone stop you from achieving your goal because of the way it makes them feel about themselves!17

That I still don't know who I am in my own skin. I have defined muscles and curves that I never pictured as "me" before. Now that I am 1/2 way to my goal and maintaining large amounts of lean mass, 2-3 times stronger than I ever was before, I don't recognize myself any more. It makes it hard to stop looking in the mirror, just to get used to the idea that it's me staring back.
I feel small... yet I have defined muscles and increased strength...but I feel small... it's so confusing!4
