The people on the biggest loser lose weight rapidly because they're overweight. So I don't know why some people have a problem with me trying to lose 20 pounds in a month. It's not like I'm trying to lose 25-35. That's ridiculous. But maybe it's possible. Who knows? Everyone's body reacts differently.

Are you trying to lose FAT, or FAT FREE MASS?

I believe the theoretical limit of fat oxidation is calculated to be around 31Cal per lb of free fat per day http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15615615.

This is not the desirable rate, neither is it the least side effects rate, or the best for long term loss rate. It is the theoretical limit.

So, assuming you can reach the theoretical limit of fat loss and you have 75lbs of available fat in your 180lb body, for sure you can lose 20lbs of fat during the next 30 days.

Then there is advise that has been concocted by people who have spent some time thinking about this *kitten*.

Men: <15% and Women: <24% <0.5-1.5 lb per week, or; 0.25-0.75% of bodyweight per week.
Men: 16-25% and Women: 25-34% 1-2 lb per week, or; 0.75-1.5% of bodyweight per week.
Men: 26+% Women: 35+% 1.5-3.5 lb per week, or; 1.0-1.5% of bodyweight per week.

Some other *kitten* I've read further modifies that for me and makes me think that 0.7% to 1% makes more sense than 1.5%.

But hey: it is your body and as you keep saying you are superficial and you don't care if you lose muscle instead of fat and you're not trolling either! (all things that you have said about you, not me)

Yep - its the 31 cals per lb of fat - IIRC correctly Lyle McDonald came up with it based on the study, but every time I look for it I get distracted by something else before I find it.

Issue is, while the deficit may be ok at 75lb of fat mass - it works out to be approx. 2,300 - there are a bunch of issues with setting a deficit at this, including:

    - its a hypothetical - why risk maxing it out
    - as soon as you lose weight, you are over the max. After say 10lb fat loss, you have 65lbs - that works out to be approx. 2,000 - thats 300 calories of energy being fed by muscle (and I cannot recall the equivalent of the 3,500 per lb for muscle to convert it) - that's basically why there is a 'sliding scale'
    - as its a hypothetical, it assumes you are not doing other things to cause muscle being used for energy outside 'normal' situations, such as extreme cardio (you need protein for repair and low calories have a significant risk of not getting enough), plus your body using your protein for energy in any event.

I am not saying that the 31 cals per lb is 'the' number - but why risk it. There are many studies that show that the size of the deficit (and someone's leanness) impacts LBM retention - which is basically saying the same thing - your body can only utilize a certain amount of fat a day
    .

The question I've had in regards to that formula is how does that translate to someone that participates in resistance training or cardio because the numbers are designed for a sedentary individual. Even Lyle says that with sufficient protein and resistance training the number is bogus.

Not sure to be honest, as I noted above, it makes sense that it would - by how much and in what direction, not sure either (although the resistance training would me more preservative of muscle retention). Problem is, and going to the other point I made above, its challenging getting enough protein on very low calories, and even if you do, your fats will likely be very very low (and not sustainable for any length of time). I tend to look at all the evidence based info out there as well as what the 'legit' natural bb'ers do as they are all about the preservation of muscle mass. A 1% of BW unless very lean, then tapering to 0.5% is pretty standard.

Tried to look it up but didn't come up with a clear answer. I believe that in the end I concluded that the catabolization of muscle yields about 1000 calories per lb. But I don't have sources.

That does not sound contrary to what I (think) I have seen. I know its quite bit less than fat.

I am going to have to pay you for doing my research at this rate lol - you are making me lazy =)

Hey I just joined your MFP group, so just paying ahead
I think I recall seeing numbers from 600 to catabolize and up to 2000 to build, and then deciding that 1000 sounded good for my purposes : - )

I am not sure if it matters at all, for the purpose of sustainable weight loss and general health, if in actual fact you can burn a bit more, or a bit less, at your theoretical maximum.

There are just too many other issues that pop in and modulate the sane rate of weight loss way lower than that level and down to within the 1% of bodyweight per week range.

I will lose 20 pounds by school ends. If you don't want to help that's fine. And I accept your criticism. But I'm looking for advice on how to do this.

I don't think I'm drinking enough water. I got my blood work done. After my first attempt at losing weight. Everything was fine expect my cholesterol and I'm dehydrated. Every workout I sit in the sauna for 20 mins. Of course I drink water during and after. But I don't think I drink enough water throughout the day. My mouth is always dry.

WHY IS EVERYONE BEING SO NICE TO THIS GIRL! YOU SOUND LIKE SOMEONE WHO IS OBSESSED WITH THE SCALE AND THE NUMBERS ON IT WHETHER YOU'RE HEALTHY OR NOT AND NOBODY HERE THAT REMOTELY CARES FOR YOU WILL HELP YOU DO THAT! YOUR MOUTH IS DRY BECAUSE YOU'RE PROBABLY DEHYDRATED SO YOURE PROBABLY NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER AND SITTING IN THE SAUNA ISN'T GOING TO HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT NEITHER IS A PALEO OR ANY KIND OF DIET! THE REASON YOU GAINED YOUR WEIGHT BACK WHEN YOU CUT CARBS IS BECAUSE FAD DIETS ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE. IF YOU WANT TO DEVELOPE AN EATING DISORDER IT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU KEEP UP THAT MINDSET. IF YOU WANT TO STAY HEALTHY MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY AND LOSE THE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF THEN QUIT THE WHINING AND BRATTY ATTITUDE AND WORK. EAT THE CALORIES YOUR BODY NEEDS AND DONT TRY TO CUT CORNERS.

GOD MAKES ME SO MAD WHEN PEOPLE ASK FOR HELP THEN TAKE ON THIS BS ATTITUDE

Haha. She needs to learn the basic principles of diet and nutrition which she clearly has no grasp on. I thought she was catching on for a second but then she kept at the 20lbs in a month crap and seems to think any naysayers are just doubting her ability to work hard in the gym.

If by being being nice to her you supporting her idea, I would say that isn't actually happening. The majority of the people have been calling her out from the start. Sara has been more civil about it and has been trying to reason with her because that's how she is and does a better job at being that way than a lot of us do. But I definitely would say most of the people in this thread have been telling the OP her plan is not wise.

I guess by nice I mean trying to reason with her and not telling her shes bat sh** crazy no I did not mean agreeing with her I read the comments before I posted

Well to a certain extent people will always try to explain why something is a bad idea to the OP. But also keep in mind that a lot of times the posts aren't only for the OP, they are for the people lurking the forum thinking about doing the same thing that are not posting.

Lol..posted before I read yours and yep.

We all have different styles and views on how to try to keep the communication useful for people other than the OP.

That being said, you should have seen last night's fun 'want to 'crash diet' thread. It was highly amusing and people were not going out of their way to be nice as the OP filled the bingo card.

We all have different ways of communicating. The OP is not the only one reading the post.

Got it I guess I was just emotionally engaged with the op for a minute I am worried about her

Probably none of that made sense but it did in my head.

from the point of view of a general discussion and trying to figure out which formula is absolutely correct or more correct or right or better, yes it makes perfect sense.

however it depends on the level of error you're willing to tolerate in this world full of errors. And if the error is unlikely to factor in my decision making I couldn't care less if it's one percent or 5 percent or 10%.

Basically, I am interested in the literature from the point of view of improving my decision making when it comes to my own weight loss and that of my friends.

But I have no horse in the scientific race so to speak, as long as I'm able to determine what the general consensus is.

And absent a general consensus, as long as I can figure out what the oppossing points of view are, and the arguments they're making so I can pick which one if any wins for me, I am satisfied, assuming I am somewhat aware of the potential pitfalls of my decision and can tolerate the risks associated with making it.
