:) I'm doing better today---walked more--rode the exercise bike a bit-then got over my obsession with myself and my own aches and pains when I got a call from a good friend who hurt her hip over the weekend, couldn't get out of her chair, had to call 911, is now staying at a friend's house and taking pain meds and muscle relaxers and may be off work and not driving for weeks. I don't like comparing myself with others, but there are times when I have to pay attention to what is happening in someone else's life to get over my obsession with my own aches and pains.

:) janetr, I'd love to have you in my line dance class...I met with a group of dance friends today including one who is 84 and dresses in outfits that look that the one in your picture.

:) DJ, if you keep on dancing, you'll get to the point where you can dance the whole class without getting tired....do not be discouraged.

:) Heather, my mother was a very creative cook like you and my dad preferred meals like a ground beef patty, steamed green beans, a wedge of lettuce with mayonnaise, and a chocolate chip cookie. Fortunately, he was a good sport and ate the lovely things she prepared.

:) Michele, I never need an alarm clock because Bernie decides when I should get up.

569147nmlfkdnzlz.gif Tomorrow is the last day of September so be prepared to look for the new thread for October to be posted about 6 PM Pacific Daylight time (right before I head for bed).

Janetr: Thank you so much for letting us know you're doing okay!

bwcetc: Key to Eating Healthy is spot on! And it made me smile.

    Newbies: Welcome! :flowerforyou:

Michele: I think the thin support for a mattress is called a pallet. We have one under our bed and like it. Our mattresses very think and we went this direction because the bed would have been too tall with a regular boxsprings. Picture us climbing a ladder if we'd done it the other way.

I did something out of character for me. I invited two couples from our neighborhood to come over Friday evening and play Mexican Train. One of these couples is relatively new here and a little bit lonely. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and I want to do a good job. Many people do things like this frequently, but I'm not used to the hostess role. I'm thinking about snacks and would like healthy suggestions that are also yummy. I'm thinking about a fruit tray and/or a cheesecake. Ideas and suggestions are more than welcome.

    2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
    3. Have fun every day.
    4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
    5. Eliminate alcohol.
    6. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.

Good for you! You should have a great time! I do fruit and vegetable trays. I also put out peanuts and pretzels. There are these really thin pretzels that I put sliced meat and cheese on. Low cal. Have you ever played chicken foot?

Katla - one my favorite sayings "treat your company like family, and your family like company". I have a large family, 5 older sisters. When we were all grown and married, and having children of our own it came a very large group. I loved ever minute of it. Just enjoy your company and have a terrific time.

This is going to be long as I've been taking notes for a few days. Was going to enter last night but ran out of gas smiley-rolleyes003.gif

Sending my heartfelt condolences and hugs to all who have lost family, friends, and furry friends lately. smiley-gen126.gif

MNMargaret - has anyone in the choir approached the new director to let her know how you all feel? Maybe she doesn't realize that she is appearing condescending to those of you who have been in the choir for so long and are used to singing together.

Mia - how did you learn to blow glass. Everytime I watch someone do it it's like magic - so beautiful!

OConnell - I hope your brother's surgery was successful

    Beth & Sylvia - I'd like to get a kiss under anything . . . lol
    giggle.gif

Joyce in SD - I did the same thing in college. I am also working on procrastination - particularly being late all the time. It started when I was in elementary school. I lived half a block from the school and was always late.smiley-angelic001.gif

Miriam - we've had the virus here too. Doctor wants oldest grandson to go to specialist about his tonsils and adenoids so probably surgery in his future.

Joyce - happy to hear for both of your sakes that Charlie seems to be doing better. Shaving is a HUGE accomplishment. smiley-angelic013.gif

Liz - congats on using the Food Diary. You're right that cutting down on processed foods will make a big difference in limiting your sodium. You must be so relieved that hubby found a job!

Beverly - You must be so proud of yourself at losing 78 lbs. That's a huge accomplishment!

Mary from MN - Penneys used to have sobakowa pillows in their stores now they are just online. If you google sobakowa there are many manufacturers just make sure they are actually filled with buckwheat husks.

TerriRichardson - Another lovely poem. The wedding decorations were beautiful and the cake perfect! The rainbow theme was not only lovely but meaningful to both of them. Congratulations on losing again and being so close to your goal!rainbow-smiley-emoticon.gif

That's it for now - back to reading. It's so frustrating when I read a post in response to something that someone else wrote but I never saw the original post. I think posts might get inserted on pages that I've already passed because people have already started writing a reply as I've gone by?! Oh well - what can a person do? Just push on!!!

Irish Terri I should clarify my mom is still living. She is in a Nursing Home over 500 miles away. We had to sell her home this past July and the 101 ways to beat stress was in her papers. She is not in a position to give support personally now. We did not tell her about the sale of her home, my son's illness and divorce , and my brother's illness because it would be too hard on her. It was just nice to find another way for her to support me in these trying times. And I did.

You also remind me I need to get busy and bring in some plants. We are now going to be in the forties at night. Time to bring in those I want for next season.

    MNMargaret
:flushed: Sorry about my misunderstanding. I hope it didn't distress you. I know you will cherish every minute with her.

I am running late this morning so will return to read and comment when I get caught up.

    This morning I broke the 12stone (168lbs) barrier. I haven't been under 12stone since my 40's.

To those who’ve lost someone they loved, my heart goes out to you—whether they are family or friends or furry family, love is never lost.

JanetR – Awesome outfit, love the boots, so glad to see you posting! Hope the surgery went very well.

Elaine in Lansing – Awesome on your A1C results!

Carol in NC – glad you were able to disprove some of the allegations. My sister suffers with depression, and I’ve had spots of it, but more situational than anything, but I know it is a dark place. Keep talking to us. Mia has it absolutely right, just one resume sent to one place will make you feel like you’re starting to gain some control, and you need that very much. You can do it, I have faith in you. As an Air Force wife, I left friends behind so many times or they left me, and I learned to maintain friendships long distance and learn to love to be alone for long periods. I’m sorry your male friend’s new love took him away from you. It is hard, and worth grieving over.

Mia – that glass is just incredible, and so glad you can sell it to benefit hospice. I know what you mean about worrying about being able to sell your stuff – I’ll be selling both my books and a third one that I contributed to that the proceeds go to my writer’s group on October 17. There’s a huge gathering for Fort Days, celebrating the town’s past history as an actual fort going back into the 1800s. The authors have a plum spot in the Fort Museum to set up our tables, so fingers crossed I get some sold!

Pip - love to see your stats going back up!

Heather - Thanks for the plug for my books!

Irish Terri - Loved the pictures of the wedding and the flowers, the joy in their faces, and your beautiful dress. And congratulations! I’m just a few pounds from that myself, and at 5’2” tall, am searching for getting under 163, out of the “obese” category and down to “overweight.”

MikesMom - Loved the pic of Walden pond!

Tracie in Green Bay – A night-time treat of blended frozen fruit of your choice with a bit of almond milk and vanilla makes a great “sweet treat,” with much fewer calories than most things with regular sugar, and it’s incredibly satisfying when you’re craving ice cream. You can add some Greek nonfat yogurt and a bit of artificial sweetener (if you use it) to the mix if you like it tangy. If you go for salty sweet mixed, a six-cup bowl of popcorn popped with very little or no oil is under 200 calories, and sprinkled with salt and some of the Splenda that comes in a bag, instead of packets, tastes exactly like kettle corn to me and keeps me away from the chips AND the sweets, as it satisfies both cravings. The husband and I bought one of the whirling top-of-stove poppers, which uses only about a teaspoon of oil (30 calories) and ends up tasting like the popcorn we grew up with. You can find them on Amazon, and ours has paid for itself many times over in terms of money not spent on microwave popcorn!

Separated this post from the response post, or I'd have taken up pages and pages!

Again, thanks to Heather for mentioning my writing, and yes, for the new ones, I have two books for sale on Amazon, just do a search for Lisa C Hannon. “This Little Pig” is a mystery set in East Texas, and “She’s Thinking Out Loud,” is a collection of my newspaper opinion columns. I was working on the sequel to PIG and three chapters into it when I took on this benighted restaurant contract—which ends on October 16.

And, in the latest news from "Restaurant Impossible--the Trailer Trash Episodes," our computer point-of-sale system has been on the fritz since last Wednesday night, just after midnight, when a storm came through as the system was sending a batch report, and fried the connections. It took FIVE DAYS for the software company technician to get in touch with me, and then they refused to listen to me on the phone, so I sicced the corporate IT geeks on them, who had similar success. However, in the end the combination of the two teams finally got it cobbled together and operational yesterday just as we opened.

In the meantime, servers were using paper tickets and putting them through the kitchen--due to the way the POS system was set up, servers basically carry their own cash around to make change for cash customers. Everything seemed to go OK for the weekend once we got the backup credit card readers up and running--they only are used when the transaction is complete, and just to pay the total.

However, we ended up bringing in approximately $1,000 less than our usual Monday nights. I found this out when I came in Tuesday morning, and we literally had no deposit to make. Quick and dirty explanation--the deposit from the day before is equal to all the cash tickets, less the amount of the credit card tips the servers make, which they get paid in cash on the night. We usually have 45-50 cash tickets each Monday through the POS system, as well as about the same number of credit card tickets. The deposit ranges from $250 to $450.

We had 12 cash tickets turned in ALL DAY Monday, and nine of those were from the day shift. Each night server and the entire night of bar sales had exactly one cash ticket apiece. And the credit card total was right in line with every other Monday night in September. And the server who commented last week, "Aren't you glad we're honest? It would be just so easy to keep the cash tickets and not hand in the money," just happened to be working, along with another one who has only been with the company for two weeks.

You do the math, because I'm really tired of going over it and over it. Monday night was also, by the way, the new manager's first night on the job. And he left before the restaurant closed, and was not part of checking the servers out. The crew chief checked them out. And she has been honest when I've known others were not, more than once. Now, will the math hold up in a court of law? No, but we can have someone watch the video and check how many tables each server actually served, and match them up to the tickets they turned in. Bet you a thousand dollars there will be quite a few more tables than tickets.

As far as the bar goes, not sure that will work, but it may be worth a try. Had they all not gotten SO greedy, they might have gotten away with it--but the stupidity went so far as the extreme that the new server actually didn't turn a cash ticket in at all--told the crew chief he'd misplaced it, but knew it was $31 exactly. Now, this is in the restaurant, where there are no numbers that end evenly. The chances that it was an even number are incredibly slim, even with sales tax added on. The video may show him tearing up all his cash tickets and pitching them, but he could have also just walked out with all of them. It's not like we pat people down.

*sigh* I've been up and down all night since 1 a.m., and finally gave up at 4 a.m. and got up. I'll be leaving at first light, as soon as I can see the deer from a distance, to get as much backup information generated as I can before a 9 a.m. meeting with the general manager. At 9:30, the GM, his assistant, the new manager and I will be in a phone conference with the owner. They may, in the end, decide to shut down the restaurant, or alternatively, move to fast casual and get rid of servers entirely. If they do, the new manager will quit--he's there to finish turning around the finances now that I've turned around the organization, and wants it to be a real restaurant, not "get your food at the counter" restaurant. *sigh*

I'm so tired of worrying about this... Sixteen more days after today (unless they shut it down), I will walk out knowing I did the best I could. But as of now, my best has just not been good enough. People just suck.

On a brighter note... this general manager is pretty darned amazing, better than most managers I've ever had, and if there is some compromise position to be found, he will find it.

Unfortunately, my performance against my goals in September, other than the weight loss, was largely abysmal. And the weight lost was largely due to stress and unhealthy eating. I think I ran maybe five times during the entire month, for the obvious reasons. Blah.

Here's hoping for a better October, my chickens, because September has been like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you finally stop doing that.

    September Goals:
    • Weigh less at the end of September than I did at the end of August. (Was 173 at the end of August, 169 now. Yay!)
    • Run three days a week minimum (get on a schedule again).(Not even close)
    • Bring balance back, start adding warehouse into my thinking. (Got electricity on this weekend, water turned on hopefully this week)
    • Log every calorie every day! (Still lumping them together and often guessing, due to job stress and sheer exhaustion)
    • Keep my calories under 1500 every day. (Probably a dozen days out of the month at most)
    October Goals:
    • Weigh less at the end of October than I did at the end of September.
    • Run three days a week minimum
    • Finish out this restaurant contract with some semblance of honorable closure and get back to my real life with a sigh of relief!.
    • Log every calorie every day!
    • Keep my calories under 1500 every day.

And, because even the worst week or even month is improved by kittens... thought I'd share... hard to think the world is such a bad place when these guys peek over the armrest... Mouse is in the top photo checking out what's happening on my side of the couch, Squeak is checking out what's making the clicky noises in the bottom one. They're coming on gangbusters, gained weight, learning to be affectionate. They also trained to the litterbox the first day. Really enjoying 'em.

Kim thoughts are not late about DB. He will not know his results about his cancer for as long as a week. Has to do the waiting game.

Gloria I think she was told last year because she blamed her approach on her back. (Talking about the choir director I had.) She said she was in constant pain with it. This might be partly true, but I also think it is her style. These choir members are also extra Minnesota Nice. Your right the problem with Minnesota Nice is not complaining to the person involved. I also think no one says anything because we do not want her to be more critical in response. Regardless I need to move on because with the issues I have in my life right now singing needs to be a joy and not another problem for me. She does not bring out the best in me. (Another red flag)

Yes I am one who tends to edit her posts. I will respond on the page I read and have to save then go to the next page. If I don't do this I lose what I wrote on the previous page.

Terri R when I wrote the post talking about my mom it was easy to misunderstand because even though she is still living I can no longer share tragic news with her. She is too fragile. No offense taken.

Lisa agree love is never truly lost. I talk to my departed love ones in my thoughts when I need to. Agree it is hard to see this darker side of human nature in your job. Love the kittens.

Working today. Starting slowly this year. Plan to work max 2-3 days a week.
