Barbie: I love the family photo. :flowerforyou:
Miriam: Your daughter's poem is fabulous! She really seems to know you. Your mom reminds me a bit of my Aunt Betty. She was cute and liked to have a good time.
Joyce: I love your family photo!
Lisa: A nice shower before bed is a wonderful thing! Your DH sounds like a treasure.
I'm up early. Between sea lions barking and DH snoring, bed was not a restful place. DD & the kids arrive late tonight, and 'm the one who will pick them up at the airport. DH says he doesn't want to go along to the airport. We'll see how that works out. I don't particularly want to drive there alone. We're planning to take the kids to the beach while they're here, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium is our main destination. We need to make hotel reservations and get things ready for the trip. We plan to go midweek, school is in session and nobody is having spring break here, so we should have a relatively easy time finding a good place to stay. Perhaps we'll get some sleep. After all, the sea lions are at our house so the coast could be quieter. Maybe. We'll drive there the fastest route, and meander up the coast on the way home. DD wants to go to an outlet mall, and there are a couple of possibilities along the way.

Saffron, I have had problems with depression since I was four years old. I also have a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling and have trained as a Peer Support Specialist. So my comments come from that background. What you are feeling right now- hopelessness- is a symptom of depression. It sometimes helps to keep telling yourself that your situation is NOT hopeless, that it just feels that way because of the depression. Medication alone will not "cure" your depression. You cannot lounge around waiting for it to work. Dealing with depression is an active process. One of the things that you can do is try to change your thinking. "I CAN do _____________" rather than thinking you cannot. Like someone said above, baby steps. When I was coming out of a severe depression, I made a list for myself of things I wanted to do to help myself feel better. Stay out of bed. Take a shower. Eat meals. Exercise ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. Twenty minutes... Get sunshine for half an hour. Get out of my house and be around people. I would check off what I was able to accomplish each day. At first it was just "stay out of bed" (and not in a recliner). Over time I was able to add more and more until the depression lifted. Exercise is one of the key elements for overcoming depression. It can also help keep it away if you are prone to depression. xanax is a very dangerous drug. It makes you tired and lethargic. But it also is highly addictive. It might help to learn some alternative methods of dealing with anxiety- deep breathing, meditation, visual imagery are a few that really work. Also, cognitive therapy is MORE effective than xanax. Learning to change your thinking habits. Doctors will tell you, just take this pill and you will feel better. They are wrong. You have to work to feel better and you CAN do it.
Another thing that people who don't experience depression don't realize is that when you are depressed, it is nearly impossible to make yourself get out in public to exercise. So it is imperative that you find something to do INSIDE that you enjoy. Dancing to upbeat music is one of my favorites. Also Richard Simmon's Sweatin to the Oldies aerobic videos are really fun and he has people of ALL sizes doing them. Or just walking around your house.
Support is very important, as well. That is where this group can help. We are here for you.6 -
Joyce - I agree, these guys are a glowing credit to their Moms. My previous house was on acreage and it just about killed me with the upkeep, mowing was an all day chore. When I moved to CO I deliberately downsized and then added landscape stone. Now it takes me only 30 mins to mow front and back and the stone was placed as a property border so I have a small firebreak in case the adjoining natural resource area should catch fire. At least you know where your hubby is with all that grass to mow.
SaffronMeadow every journey begins with the first step. I have physical limitations that make it painful to do some of the most common forms of excersise. Get moving, start with something simple - take a walk. Start at a leisurely pace and do not fuss about how short the walk is, it's a start. Keep it simple, no special equipment is needed.
It may take awhile to feel like 'something is happening' but you will feel better as it becomes easier to breathe, muscles will begin to feel stronger and you will feel like things are getting easier to do. My daughter told me last night that just by taking my walks I am doing 100% more excersise than the nearest couch potato. I like that thought alot. It's quickly become my motivation when it feels like I can't get moving. Feel free to borrow it.

Good afternoon everyone!
Phew! I've been so busy with all this socialising that I've hardly had time to do anything on here. I have read through all now. Here's a picture of DSIL and DH having our cream tea in the garden yesterday. Luckily I did an extra 75 min walk in the afternoon to accommodate my scone and jam and cream. As I had done my morning exercises I only went over for 250 on the whole day.
We even did our exercises this morning while DSIL caught up with admin. Then she went home, I went next door to shout at the builders for having their radio on too loud and then we went to the supermarket to pick up our Norwegian kroner we had ordered and spend our money off vouchers. Of course, we ended up buying some luxury items we would not normally have bought. They've gone in the freezer for a future celebration.
Tomorrow is the anniversary of the birth/death day of my stillborn daughter Kate. I bought some beautiful tulips to remember her by. She would have been 38 tomorrow.
Best wishes, Katla, for your upcoming visit. :flowerforyou:
Joyce - Lovely photos! I so love to see what people look like when you have talked about them. And nice jewellery too.
Lovely also to see the old photos of mothers. I will post one of my mum and dad when I can get round to it. Thank you.
I'm looking forward to seeing my elder son on Wednesday. We have fixed a time to meet in my hotel bar. :drinker: He is in the process of adopting two retired greyhounds. Never owned dogs before, but has had serious girlfriends with dogs, so he knows a bit. I will try to capture a pic of them from Facebook. He feels quite nervous about it, but he really adores dogs.

have you heard about soap helping with leg or foot cramps? I have and decided to try it Saturday night since I had run the 11 miles, I knew it would happen, even with all the walk, slow run then standard run then slow run again.. walking to cool down, etc.... it worked.. I was doubtful but I was amazed.

put a bar of soap underneath your bedsheet, (btwn mattress and your fitted sheet) at your feet and that's it.

I ate a sandwich just now!!!!!! This is the first time in over a week that my jaw was able to do that. that means I will eat my usual taco salad tonight. This gives me such hope that this jaw thing could be just dry socket.
I have heard many people say this bar of soap under the sheets really works. And the admit that there is no reason for it but it just works.

All these old pictures of mothers make me acutely aware that I don't have any. Nor do I have any pictures from my own childhood. There are lots of pictures, but they're back home with my parents. Excellent reminder that my sisters and I have to make duplicates of (or digitalize) our favorite pictures and spread them around! At present many of them are in wooden drawers in a wooden house without any fire alarm or anything.
I've been quiet for a couple days. One of my main sources of income is an institute that is now obliged to have a formal procurement procedure so I'm working on a tender. Darn thing has to be written in Norwegian and I only do Swedish. Good thing I have friends I can call on for assistance.

Tired... and still a city council meeting to go to. Not whining... really. Love being submerged in words again. But 24 hours of bathroom building and table building and then ten hours at the paper today has used my last reserve. One more meeting, then bed for me!1

Charleen in Colorado – His “Mama” is from Alabama; and she ‘raised him right’ … that’s our jobs as “Mamas from the Deep South”. If we raise our sons to be gentle(men) … and they marry young women they love … you’ll hear that ‘you’ve raised them right’ from your DDnLs a lot. That's when I know I have 'succeeded' at my job as Mom. When I told my DDnL#2 (before she married DYS), that he had some/few flaws; she told me that ‘he was her prince and she knew we had raised him right because he showed her the things that her own parents thought was proper; like opening doors for her, surprising her, cooking for her, massaging her back. etc., basically being a 'romantic'. He is ‘her prince’ and wished she had met him years earlier. I told her that she might not have ‘liked’ the ‘younger version’. But, he IS her prince. I think it surprised her that he went to her Daddy to ask for her ‘hand in marriage’ (like proper young Southern gentlemen) before surprising her with an engagement ring while they were on a 'hunting trip' in Colorado (for elk) that she had surprised him with. The other couple owned some land up there, or hunting rights to a place - something like that. That made my day! Today is their 1st anniversary. Nice little family of 3 (she has a 10-year-old daughter from a previous marriage). You treat that ‘boy’ right, ya hear? Sounds like a good thing to have around when you have that type of landscaping in your yard. I’d love to have a waterfall (or some water feature). Post some pixs … we’d like to see.
Michele in NC – I don’t know what our pool was on Saturday; but, it was also ‘windy’ as all get out, too. That, alone, makes it feel colder than it is. I’m going to see about getting in it this week. Now that I have found that my ankle is, indeed, sprained from the wreck I had on the 3rd … I’m sure if I do nothing other than sit on the side and put my ankle in, it will help. I’d like to get in and walk some, too. We’ll see.
Saffronmeadows – I take a ‘lot’ of medication that has the ‘side effects’ of ‘weight gain’. I was hitting 200 and decided I needed to do something ‘soon’; my MD ordered me into a weight loss program and I have dropped 40lbs since. Today, she told me that my muscle % had gone up and the fat % had gone down; so she was not as upset about the 1.5lb I had weighed heavier on the scale; all my % on torso, arms, legs had gone down; and my water weight is ‘up’, too. Three more points and I will be ‘normal’ weight; right now I am just ‘overweight’. Fluffy as some might put it … but not nearly as ‘fluffy’ as when I started this trek; with the encouragement of all the ladies here. Thanks ladies!
Pip – Are you saying ‘soap’ or ‘soup’? What kind? We had a maid who swore that if you went to the drug store and bought ‘turpentine’ and put it under your bed in a dish at night … that’d help, too. She was ‘full’ of old tricks. Not the kind of turpentine you use to remove paint. It's a 'tincture'. (SP?)
nccarolb – I LOVE the light house! I’ve got some terra cotta pots that I have not used this year; this gives me an idea what to do with them. Thanks for sharing!
Penny – My DH, nor his brother, have very many pictures of their parents. DH’s daughter (from a previous marriage) took all of them when they passed away and did not ‘share’. Karma will come a’calling one day. At least we do have some. Wedding pixs, etc.

My sister's daughter married a man from Arkansas and she was very content staying down there after marrying. Of course it didn't hurt that her FIL hates anything past the Mason Dixon Line so the wedding was held down there. But she loves and respects so much his parents and grand parents. They have had such on impact on her life. Michelle is dating a black man who was raised with the same principals as a southern gentleman. I don't think it is in his nature to call me anything except Maam. And yes, he opens doors. Some things have just been lost in time and needs to be found.
Attempted a taco salad for supper and mouth is not ready for it. I get repacked on Thursday and they arranged my husbands tooth extraction so it is the same time.

We're going to the airport tonight to pick up DD and the children. I am looking forward to seeing them. It has been months and months. They leave Chicago at 8:46pm and are scheduled to arrive at PDX at 11pm. Then we load up and drive them home. We may be here by about midnight, but likely a bit later.

Joyce, Indiana~ My husband opens doors, and is teaching the youngest to be respectful to ladies :-) I don't understand some women though. I mean they take it as a personal attack on their character when my husband opens a door for them. It's not that he doesn't think they are strong enough, its because he was taught to respect them (us). I feel special when he pulls out a chair for me! It's a cue to everyone in the world that we are a couple.
