Mia, so good to have you back!0

Good morning ladies! It is time for me to take my morning walk then swing my kettle bell! I hope everyone had a fun weekend!
Michele - I hope everything goes well at your doctor appointment.(((hugs)))
Have a great day everyone!

Lenora - No, I do not live in a tiny house, that is defined as 600sq feet or less.
I bought a house with 2500 less sq feet than my original house. I have a 'full' sized house with all the accessories (washer/dryer etc) but it is only 2000 sq feet vs 4500 sq feet. Since I am inside the city limits, I can not add an additional living structure to the property. The city boundry is literally my back property line.
Boulder CO is an epicenter for tiny houses. They had a horrible fire season back in 2012 that wiped out so many houses back in the canyons. Most were not insured, so the owners could not afford to rebuild.
Enter the tiny house movement, a tiny house could be built in town, towed to the property and hooked up to the existing utilities. It cost less, and gave them a home to live in while they decided whether or not to rebuild a new structure and a place to live while they rebuilt. There is even a hotel of tiny houses clustered together with different layouts you can rent for a night, a week or however long you want to stay to try out living tiny.
Thousands of people were displaced by the fire and rentals were tough to find before the fire and 2013 floods (floods on burned land are another level of misery), some were commuting 2-3 hours one way just to find a place to live. Hence, tiny houses are very attractive here. The area will take many years to recover completely, but there will always be people who love the mountains and want to live there.
Here is a pic of the view from my back deck. In a word, beautiful!

Mia – Glad you’re back! WOW! Twenty pounds of excess skin and fat removed. There is only one spot that I wish I could have taken off, a little pooch right in front; but, nurse/MD says that is the last to go; thighs hard to lose inches in; but, they are both going down. I never realized that as you get closer to your goal date, the harder and slower the pounds come off.
I’m 2 points away from being in the BMI range of ‘normal’. That is when I will feel my best. Could not lift a 40lb bag of potting soil; and, to ‘think’ that was distributed around my body, am surprised how much better I feel and can move around. Less awkward, too!
Cheri - What was involved in 'winning' the rental?
Michele in NC – Who is ‘the wife’?
Beth near Buffalo – What is SMH? Usually, I am pretty good with acronyms; but, this one has me stumped.
Lisa – Pretty smile … all through what you went through to lose weight. Third one, after you met your 2nd DH seems you are ‘really’ happy. Last one, shows you are truly happy and beautiful.
I don’t think parents ever really ‘think’ about what they say and how children take it. I am the youngest of 3 girls. I can remember hearing my mother tell people, “I wanted 6 boys; but, stopped at 3 girls because they are twice as nice.” And in the next breath, she’d talk about how DMS almost ‘killed’ her; and, that she had been told ‘not to get pregnant again’ because it would surely kill her, the baby (me), or both of us. She lived through it, I did; but, because she was too weak to ever take care of me for a while, spent my first few months with her aunts. We were never really close; but, she was like a “Mama Bear” if anybody messed with any of us. What I remember most is the first time I had to go to a OB/GYN because I was having a really bad period and our family MD had told her to put me to bed with my feet up; she told him, ‘no, I want you to get her in to see and OB/GYN now, today; she'll be dead by morning the way she is bleeding.” He did, I was NOT expecting the exam (partly her fault … to me – or partly the MD’s) and when the MD started lecturing me … she lit into him with a vengeance. While we still were not very close, we got a lot closer before she died, when DH and I lived 25 miles away and DOS and I saw parents almost on a daily basis. But, it was my DMnL that came and stayed with me after giving birth to my children. I was much closer to her; especially after living near them for close to 2 years before we had any children. She was a "Nanny" for several families in Jacksonville.
Had to wait for a distance storm to pass before getting in pool; as long as we hear thunder, we don't get in it. Kicked around for an hour-and-a-half (since son doesn't want me to walk laps around the pool; do I put on an inner tube; and kicked around the entire time. That was my workout. Came home and ate left-overs from the birthday party for DMGD.
I think Cracker got stung by a bee or a wasp yesterday on her ear, it is swollen to about a little over twice the thickness of the other one. I need to take her back to the vet to see if the toenail next to the one we had taken off, needs to be cut shorter. I'm NOT going to do it. Just 'thinking' about it, makes my skin crawl. They can file it off (or I can take her to PetSmart and have them do it); but, only if DDnL#1 is willing to take me to town.
I don't think we've gone to any fireworks show since our boys were little. Only if we were in Jacksonville visiting 'in-laws' and we could go sit on the dock and watch them from across the river.

Hot flashes are driving me crazy this past week or two. Any tips for dealing?

Cheri love the picture.
Michele good luck at doctor's office.
Mia good to see you back. Sorry for the pain you went through.
Larissa love the red dress. Wow!
We went to a baseball game with friends last night and fireworks afterward. Unfortunately I spent an hour of it at the emergency room.
ICK ALERT When walking into the game a Japanese Beetle hit the brim of my hat and the because it was disoriented it went into my ear. To say I was upset is putting it mildly. My blood pressure was 190/110. I read about it after the fact. The best thing is to stay calm and not try to get it out with a Q-tip. It is also important to stay calm and not shake your head. I guess the first thing you can try is a blade of grass. For me going to the emergency room was the best thing. It did not do any permanent damage. I do have to put antibiotic drops in my ears for five days. I am also putting cotton balls in my ears when I work outside. I know the odds are low it will happen again. I just want to make sure because I do not want that to ever happen again.
We did make it back by the third inning and did get to see a grand slam (first of the season) and the fireworks.
Taking it easy today. I will go and recheck my blood pressure today.
Margaret1 -
Margaret ~ I hear you on the ICK ALERT! Years ago a bug flew in my ear when I was driving with the window down on a beautiful Fall day. I just about went crazy...screaming like a banshee as it buzzed around in my ear! My mom happened to be working at the nearby hospital and she came and took me to the emergency room. Doc got it out. I was embarrassed by my behavior and regretted it ever since.1

Demo day here in my sisters place! So glad I can do this for her, she lives with so little and suffers from anxiety, cerebral palsy and macular degeneration.....and will not miss a single day of work! She would never ask for help and lives with so little, it is humbling and sobering and makes me never want to complain about my life every again!!!
After the bathroom demo is finished today, my sister and I along with our youngest sister will be staying in an Airbnb apartment where we plan on wining and dining together for the entire week.
This is my kind of vacation! NYKAREN4 -

on this great cycle challenge? I just read that they are allowing people to record rides til the end of july.... ugh, should I get back on the saddle and hit it hard again?0
-
Margaret - they just had in episode of that on Will You Survive. And they said number one put baby oil or mineral oil into your ear and it will either be drowned or wash the insect out then number two go to the emergency room. I hope your ear feels better soon!
Mary from Minnesota0 -
Carol you have nothing to be ashamed of with how you responded to having that bug in your ear. Your ear canal is one of the most sensitive parts of your body. Your behavior was normal. It is like any emergency the calmer you can stay the better. Next to impossible with a bug busying and biting you in your ear.
Mary I did not have mineral oil available when this happened. It was a Japanese Beetle which even with mineral oil it would have taken a good ten minutes to kill. I deal with this pest in my garden this time of year. When you put them it a bucket of soapy water it takes 30 minutes to kill them. Whatever they put in my ear to get her out (It was larger so I know it was a she. The males are smaller. ) it did not kill it. It just got upset and bit me then came out. I did the honors of squishing it. The sooner you get the insect out the better. It is a trapped animal and can cause a lot of damage. Emergency room was the way to go and cotton in my ears when I am outside.
Margaret1 -
Margaret - Oooooohhhh for the Japanese Beetle! I had to Google it. At least you got to see the rest of the game. :flowerforyou:
My mother used to say I was "plain" and I had "piggy eyes" like my grandfather. She also told me it didn't matter because when I was older I could use eye pencil to make them look bigger. She was always trying to home perm my hair so I would look like Shirley Temple. I was told my hair was "mousey" and "lank".
When I was 7 yrs old I had a best friend who was incredibly pretty. As we grew older all the boys ran after her when she came to visit. It was painful to be the plain one in her shadow. In adulthood she grew dumpy and married a vicar. Her life was not happy and she became jealous of me. We have lost touch over that, but I would love to know how she is now.
Mia - Nice to see you back. That was some amount of skin you had trimmed off! Congratulations!
Charlene - Great view!
I've just finished prepping a lentil and vegetable curry for tonight. It smells divine. I've cooked the lentil bit, with potatoes for DH, and I've got a pile of veg from the fridge box to put in for the last 15 minutes. DH was outside wrestling with brambles and weeds so I played my favourite Bangra tunes and danced around the kitchen. Then I switched to old French "chansons" while I made some new yoghurt.
I thought it was about time I rescued my sourdough starter from the back of the fridge as it's been there for over a year. Usually when I scape all the black mould off there is some clean starter underneath, but this had been lurking so long the clean bit had dried up. I am seeing if I can revive it, otherwise I will have to start again, capturing wild yeast from the air.
My voucher from the garden centre arrived yesterday, in payment for the deseased geraniums I had from them. One pot has revived and is flowering, but the others are still sickly. Nice to have the refund though.
The upstairs windows are open because of the painting, but it is warmer today and the sun is shining. I was frozen last night.
Still feeling a little flat. I should be going to the W I tonight, but my friend is still in Wales, so I probably won't. It's about bee keeping.
I've been doing my Spanish, but really need to move up to the next level. I have ordered some books from Amazon - one on the subjunctive, which the Spanish use a LOT and one which is aimed at exam students who need some specialised vocabulary for their oral exams. I do have some pod casts I can listen to, but can't always be bothered to put my earphones on when DH is about. I'm still reading the news in Spanish on BBC Mundo. I just can't wait to go to Spain, or go anywhere. :ohwell:
Ungrateful you, I hear you saying, but all my best girlfriends are away at the moment. Spain, Holland and Wales. My cancer friend has broken a rib by coughing so much and doesn't want visitors until she heals a little.
Still waiting to hear if my son has exchanged on his house. :ohwell:
DH is improving, but his energy levels are low with his wheezy cold. Hayfever too. He isn't really in the mood for doing much away from the house. I could just go off on my own, but I think he would be sad. My wanderlust is a bit of a trial to him.
Love to all. Heather

Margaret Your poor ear. i bet that hurts and is swollen, ouch! As if Japanese Beetles don't cause enough harm in their natural environment.
Heather No creo que usted es ingrata.

The MegaMillion Lottery is up to $449,000,000.
I could do a lot of good in the world with that kind of money. Maybe I should buy a ticket.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good afternoon Ladies,
Katla, so glad you and the dog found a room with less noise. I hope it works for tonight.
Melanie, so glad you had the good workout and survived it. Not sure I would. Lol
Mary, cute cartoon. Thanks for the smile.
Jmmbrooks, welcome. This is a great place for support and information so come daily. Please tell us a little about yourself to help us get to know you. We also appreciate it if you sign each post with the name you want to be called and a location, general or specific.
Cheri, I love the picture of you and DH. Thanks for sharing. I hope the move goes smoothly and you enjoy your new digs in Texas.
Barbie, your yard sounds like something I’d like but DH still enjoys mowing and weed-eating. It is the best exercise he gets so as long as he can do it I guess we’ll stay here. Plus, Maggie the Lab likes it.
Allie, so glad you and your Dad had a good time. I hope Tom missed you appropriately.
Mia, . Sorry to hear about your problems but glad things are going well. If you don’t mind answering, where all did you have the extra skin removed? I’ve heard it’s a very painful recovery. We missed you!!!!
MicheleNC, that woman that didn’t speak to you after your wedding must have had some problem other than the fact that you didn’t both come kneel down in front of her to thank her for her attendance. Sounds like you may have been better off. LOL I totally agree with you about using the sun screen. It’s not foolproof that we won’t get skin cancer but it has to help.
Lisa, great seeing the different pictures. Thanks for sharing. I guess because I have been so uncomfortable with my size and weight, I just don’t have many pictures of me over the years.
Barbie, so glad Jake is improving. I’ve never found men to be the best patients so I hope you have lots of patience.
Charleen, that is interesting info on the tiny houses in Bolder. Thanks for sharing. And what a beautiful picture!!!
Margaret, how arful about the bug in your ear!!!! Ewwwwwwwww That sounds like something that would happen to me or DH. Glad you got it taken care of. (((Hugs)))
NYKaren, so nice of you to help your DS. You girls have fun this week.
I have really been thinking a lot about Sylvia lately. I hope she is well and enjoying the co-op. I sure miss her and wish she’d peek in once in a while.
to any Newbies that I missed. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
Even though they aren’t allowed, we had lots of fireworks in the neighborhood last night. Long and Loud! For the first time in 9 years, there were none on our street so it was nice to wake up this morning and not have to clean up the debris from our yard and street. DH just brought Maggie Lab in so she wouldn’t bark at every noise. It finally ended a little after 11:00. Today is line dancing. I’m looking forward to it. In fact I need to go get ready. Sending love and good thoughts to all of you and I hope you all have a Happy and Healthy Day!
Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.
and
Opportunity. Each day offers new opportunities for good health and happiness if we just look for them and choose them.
I Love you,

Good morning ladies, hope the day finds each of you better than yesterday!. So, I'm back at work, (in the office today, go BACK to New Orleans on Thursday). I felt ok when I awoke this morning, but as I sit here at my desk, the soreness & stiffness is beginning to surface. Took some Advil, and hopefully that will ward it off. I might just need to MOVE around some. If it weren't soooo hot here, I would go walk, perhaps I will go this evening.
So, I achieved something they (the workout facility) referred to as "epoch"(?) , which means (as I understand it) that the body will continue to burn calories for up to 36 hours AFTER the workout is completed. Not sure how I will be able to measure that, but, I knew that I didn't need to eat back the 512 calories I burned yesterday from the workout. Just wish I could burn that many on a regular basis. COULDN'T do that workout everyday, but may go ahead and "invest" in the myself & sign up for 1-2 weekly sessions.1 -
Katla - Gracias, pero tu puedes utilizar "tu" conmigo.
Lisa - Thanks so much for posting your photos. All of my fat photos are on my old laptop. I'll try and look one up. I don't have any of me at my worst. I wonder if my brother has any of me at the fancy dress party that was my turning point. I certainly don't. :noway: I didn't wear fancy dress (it was a 70s theme) and lurked miserably at the back of the room.
The sun has been shining today. First time in a while. Of course the tractor lawn mowers are out in force and our windows are open. Whoever thought the countryside was quiet?
Lots of love, Heather xxxxxx1 -
Heather geraniums do not like to be over watered. It also might help to add Epson salts to the water when you do water. It gives them the magnesium they need. Hope it recovers for you. They are gorgeous when they bloom. They do best with morning sun and deadheading too.0

To the lady who asked about hot flashes, not sure if she will see this but I had horrible night sweats and daytime hot flashes. I think I am almost done with menopause due to my age but this supplement pretty much put a stop to any hot flashes and night sweats: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006KL4TYG/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Smoky Mountain makes menopause among other vegan and natural supplements. ONE caveat, these pills DO NOT make you lose weight as they claim. I am still overweight after using them for a month now. They also take about two weeks to really start working. I have noticed improved energy and the end of my hot flashes/night sweats.
Best wishes!2 -
Hi all,
I could use some feedback from all you successful "over 50" losers! I just turned 60 this year and am on my usual summer "shape up." I managed to gain another five pounds this past school year. Ugh. So, along with the 25 I've gained over the past five years or so, it aint pretty!
The last time I attempted to lose weight was in Feb. I stuck with between 1400 and 1600 a day for ten weeks. I lost 1.5 pounds the first week, .5 pounds the next three weeks and then nothing at all for the next six weeks! Oh, and I was starving the whole time and immediately got severe insomnia--waking up at 2am and not getting back to sleep some nights at all. Of course, I got sick, and it was pretty much a train wreck all around. My body seems very adept at adjusting to a lower amount of food anymore.
Now that summer is here the only thing I have on my agenda is taking better care of myself and trying to get back to a more manageable weight. I am probably closer to 40 pounds overweight but, truthfully, I am very happy even 15 pounds under where I am now.
I am two weeks into 1300 calories a day consistently, walking twice a day to get my steps up to about 6,000 a day, plus gardening and other activity. I am afraid to get on the scale because if I do and find that I haven't lost any weight I will just lose it and give up. I am done with the scale ruining a perfectly good day, you know?
I actually think I'm making some progress this time, I'm sleeping so that is an improvement right there, and the exercise and the clean eating is certainly making me feel better so that is the ultimate win already.
My question is just how you all have managed weight loss when our bodies are so resistant to giving up the pounds? Can you give an idea of what you think has made the most difference as far as having the fat melt? I don't know if I am still eating too many calories or if I am eating not enough...(ha ha, probably not that). Maybe I need to go more into some sort of weight bearing exercises....intermittant fasting, or the opposite eating first thing in the morning...??...it can feels kind of pointless to even try anymore.
Thanks for sharing with me!
Ann C.
PS Sorry if this posts twice as my internet is going in and out!0 -
Finish mowing the lawn at the city house and sheesh I'm HOT! They say the heat index will be about 105 today and I'm thinking they might be right for once.
Marcelyn in Houston1 -
AnnC ... Weights/weight training makes all the difference in my efforts to lose and maintain ... Along with wholesome eating.
Barbie ... Those comments were mean, and I'm so sorry I laughed out loud!!
Margaret ... Awful things, beetles!
Pip ... Do you want to continue the riding challenge?? Or do you need to focus and conserve for your upcoming events?
Charleen ... What a view!
Lenora ... SMH ... Shaking My Head ... At least that's what I think it means! Why doesn't your son want you to walk around the pool?
Hope you're all having a great day!
Beth near Buffalo0
