So.... I went to my TOPS meeting (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and I gained 1 lb. Ok this past week hasn't been the best I can do. Worrying about my sister, and her drinking problem had me stressed. I didn't make the best choices. I told my TOPS group today that I do feel blessed, that I can think clearly, walk up and down streets, not let anything (like alcohol) control me, and that I do not take any medicine. Looking at my sisters' life, letting alcohol control her, and that she can't walk 2 blocks without resting, and that her mind is a constant fuzzy, makes me value mine. .
Life gives you moments to give of yourself, and you need to take them. Appreciate the opportunities to put yourself out there. Do not allow the bad define you, or limit you. ((((hugs)))))

I am so sorry about your sister. While addiction in any form is an illness requiring help and treatment, it is up to us to make the choice to ask for help. Your attitude spurs me to do better.
CJ
She did call me the other day. On her own and everything. I was in shock... My older sister and I are hoping to talk to her about her life choices soon.0 -
Pip - I had not heard of Walbernize before so thanks for the clip.0

Janet and Becca and Pip and Lisa It sounds like you will be turtles in the fast lane. That's the life.
Someone asked here why I want to be able to live out of a suitcase. It is because there is too much I want to do and see. I may retain a small apartment or bedroom in a house I would rent out. I believed I mentioned a friend who sold all and rents her house out and travels full time, with a laptop as an office.Janetr okc~ That is what we want to do in about 2 yrs.
This morning I made oat farls. Like a scone but you take steel-cut oats and mix with buttermilk the night before, and leave out on the counter. Then the next morning you add, baking soda, salt, and flour. You fashion into a big round, then with a sharp knife you cut to make farls. It's a hearty thing, great with a mug of tea! When we did historical re-enactment camping, my husband loved to yell, "Bring me an oat farl woman!" He would say it in his thickest accent he could muster!

Recipe from a cookbook entitled, "From Celtic Hearths" Baked Goods from Scotland, Ireland and Wales by Deborah Krasner:
2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
1 &1/4 to 2 & 1/4 cups buttermilk
2 & 1/2 cups unbleached flour sifted
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
The day before mix oats with 1 & 1/4 cup buttermilk, and let sit overnight. Cover bowl with plate, or plastic wrap.
Next day preheat to 350'. Lightly grease baking sheet.
Stir together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Gradually beat the flour mixture into the oat mixture, adding buttermilk if necessary. Shape dough into flattened circle about 1 inch thick. With a sharp knife cut dough into quarters, (or more). Bake for 40 minutes or until browned.
The re-enactment we did was with the SCA (Society For Creative Anachronism). We dressed in 16th Century Renaissance garb. I will post some pictures of the life :-)

Miriam -miriamwithcats wrote: »Ann, I found the trick to get a good caulk like is to tape with painter tape along each side of the area to be caulked. Run your caulk down the center, then use a wet finger to smooth it. Remove the tape and you have a perfect caulk line. Be sure to use WHITE caulk. The clear sounds like a good idea, but if mold grows behind it (and it often will) it shows. I also found that the slightly more expensive caulk guns that have a release trigger are worth the additional cost. And for the bathroom, be sure to get caulk with silicone to keep the moisture out of the walls! You can also caulk around the base of your toilet for a more sanitary seal. I always do. If your toilet ever overflows, you will be glad it is caulked so nothing nasty gets underneath in to the flooring.
Wow! Some wonderful tips about caulking. The caulk on my shower is 20 years old and really needs to be redone. After reading this I just might give it a try myself rather than hiring someone to do it.

KJ, I could read and re-read your post all day long and just invision myself in it. Sounds heavenly.
Kim, a library that lets you check out tools??? I have never heard of it. Now we have several of the big box stores that rent them.
I am the one in our household that builds anything. Charlie just thinks you can open the box and eye ball it and put it together. I look at the directions, separate things and do them step by step. I can't tell you how many book cases, desks, swing sets I have put together. I always have Charlie come in and tighten things before I move onto the next step. Michelle and I do a lot of those things together since she can tighten things. It's one of those things we enjoy doing together. I think my SIL does it in their home. But it is a good thing for a dauhgter to see her Mom do it. It empowers her. Ellie would never have any trouble putting something together. Shoot, she will be one to delelope those things you put together.
Charlie was able to get out of bed by himself this morning. He said it was God's birthday present to him.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Ladies,
Kim, it sounds like you are really getting in full days!! I had to laugh picturing you climbing the fence to get to work. That is dedication, for sure.
NYKaren, you know you have our support. I am looking forward to the pictures.
Lisa, it sounds like you will never have a dull moment. But things can get exciting so as long as we get a first-hand account, we will be right here with you.
Allie, so wonderful that you got such a good night’s sleep. I hope all goes well for Jean and Faith tomorrow.
CarolGA, a rep is one time of doing an exercise, so if you did 8 sets of 10 reps each, that would be a total of 80 of that one thing.
Katla, it sounds like you are having a lovely visit. They are going to keep you so busy that you will have to go home to rest. Have a ball, my friend.
CJ, how sweet of you to say.
Janetr said “I too was very surprised when I lost the 125 pounds that the majority of my shoes would no longer stay on my feet. However, what really blew me away was the first time I put my straw sun hat on to go outside. It was so big it just swirled around on my head. Gives a whole new meaning to "fat head" ” Now that is a new one to me, but sooo funny!!! I did find my shoe size changed and only lost about ½ of what you did.
Kelly, way to go on fixing the sump pump. You should have been very proud!!! I hope your DH was very proud of you too.
Lillian, just tell all those people that you are a very busy lady and if they want some of your time, they will have to get on your schedule. Us retired ladies do have to schedule lots of down time, ya know.
Rita, thanks for the warning but I don’t even see a link that says 2 Private Message?
Kay, I’ve lived up north so I know I’m going to stay in SC no matter what the election results are. lol
Janetr, have a safe trip!!!!
Heather, is the family dispute with your DH’s family something that they can eventually resolve? Sometimes those things just can’t get any better unless people are willing to just get over it.
Becca, great pictures. Thanks for sharing.
to any Newbies that I missed. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I threw some chicken in the crock pot this morning with lots of spices and a little chicken broth and oh boy does it smell good. I have baked broccoli and cauliflower and will fix DH an ear of corn. In fact, it’s time to get off here and head to the kitchen.
Sending love and good thoughts to all of you and I hope you all have a Happy and Healthy Day!
Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.

LOL! I went to a RED Hat event this week and wore one of my favorite hats. It sat lower down on my ears than I had remembered but I attributed that to my just not remembering how poorly it fit. Since it has been a year since I have worn that particular hat I am now wondering if the weight loss has finally gone to my head. LOL!
KJLaMore -Had a great day yesterday. Left my house at 10am and rode my bike into downtown GH, hit the library and farmer's market, walked the boardwalk and pier, took a hike through the dune areas of Highland Park/Mulligan's Hollow, sat on the grassy hill that over looks the channel and read a little (distracted by people watching) and ate a lunch that I had packed (so that I wouldn't be tempted to buy something that smells yummy but has enough calories for three days), then I biked towards home. I stopped at my brother-in-law's house (he and his wife live about 2 1/2 miles from us) and took a swim in their pool (floated around) and stayed for a bbq. Brother-in-law did the cooking. It was just lovely! A mini vacation! Didn't get home until 8:30.
That sounds like an idyllic way to spend a day. So glad to read you had such a lovely time.

I will get a few basic phrases under my belt, but I'm not going full out to learn Russian. We will probably take the escorted trips there, so PLEASE and THANK YOU , HELLO and GOODBYE, will probably be enough. I now know the sign for TOILET! First things first!
When I went to the Soviet Union I learned how to say Please, Thank You, Hello, Goodbye and "Where is the toilet." First time I asked for the toilet I got shown what I wanted but the person gave a small snicker when I asked. I later asked her why she laughed. It was because I had asked for the facilities or water closet rather than asking for the loo. Just a bit too formal for her. While there I also learned to ask for tea (chai), ice cream and "fearless leader." Silly people kept wanting to give me coffee just because I was travelling with a group of Americans.

I've been working on Russian for about 11 years now. Started when I realized I was going to have a Russian son-in-law who could not speak any English (he is fluent now after 10 years with a mild accent). I have never mastered speaking it except as a child would. Five cases, formal and informal tenses, plus gender PLUS they conjugate every word, not just verbs and a few nouns like we do. It is just too complicated for my mind but I can understand it well and can read it. It is quite easy to read since it is phonetic. If you master that and have a good English/Russian dictionary you will be fine. I also have an app on my phone called iVoice that is wonderful. I speak into it in English and it translates to Russian. It's correct most of the time. I've used it to speak to Russians, Romanians, Italians and a few others. I usually just show them the translation and they read it rather than me murdering pronunciation. Finding people who speak English in Russia is totally dependent upon where you are. A lot of hotel clerks did although we had one Holiday Inn in Moscow that didn't have any English speakers. We were in a smaller village though most of the time and we were the only English speakers there (except for our daughter). We were a novelty as they all wanted to meet the Americans. Seems they had never seen any before. I asked my daughter why we were treated that way when she had been there all summer. Seems she passes for Russian and most of them didn't know she was an American. Anyway, enjoy your trip.2 -
Mia too funny, I guess you're right. I must have let it go to my head for sure.

Thank you all for your support and advice, Including traffic pattern advice, love that! After a very stressfilled but positive day, I opened up the forum to 85 comments, whoa!!!
Helped my OS pick out flooring for the entire apt. filled up her pantry and fridge with healthy food supplies. Ran Various little errands and generally keeping her company as she fretted over everything. Worrying and negative thoughts are a constant and I try not to get sucked in.
Tomorrow when the grab bars go in we are going to push through and make this work for her. She adores the tile, the paint, the fixtures. She loves it all, we've just got to make sure she has super safe strategies to get in and out of the shower. That is stressing me out. But I can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I can only take this one step at a time. Now I am off to read my book and relax!!

Pip, this morning when Sasha and I were walking we encountered a couple from our neighborhood that I've met before but I'd never seen them out walking. As they were petting Sasha and commenting on how sweet and soft she is, I noticed that the woman was wearing those shoes that you like with the individual places for toes. I've seen your pictures that you posted of the shoes but had never seen them on someone's feet. She said they were very comfortable and she's been wearing them a lot....I loved the video of the Deception Pass ride but would have liked to see you and Kirby riding instead of all those people in teams. That is such a beautiful place to be. I've driven it many times and have stopped the car and walked over the bridge twice.
I am in such awe of all of you and your repair skills--toilet installation, sump pump repair, assembling furniture, painting, and a few other things that I probably forgot. This is an impressive group of women.

Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. I'm feeling quite inspired by all you DIYers. It's time to start planning my return to Honolulu, and get serious about finishing the repairs and upgrades to our rental condo, and put it on the market. Had hoped to be further along after my trip there in May, but that trip was short circuited by a family emergency. A part of me agonizes this expense and stress, but it really has to get done. Does anyone here have any experience with For Sale By Owner?
I've had a restful weekend, with only one chore that was a necessity: getting the knives, scissors and garden clippers all sharpened. I take them to this guy with a booth at the Saturday Farmer's Market. While he worked, I shopped. Got golden beets, awesome Colorado peaches, and a small bottle of luscious balsamic. We had the beets in a chopped salad today with goat cheese and slivered almonds. I blanched the beet greens and they are in the freezer for another dish. I also got in some consignment and bargain shopping for clothes. Got 4 tops, a silk dress, a jacket, a pair of jeans and a pair of new trainers, for under $50. The store is trying to make room for next season's clothes, so alot of items were 70% off. Score!
Tomorrow I'll have back to back treatments from the chiropractor and massage therapist. I can't wait. I've had a nagging pain from my neck to my elbow. Really affecting my ability to weight train, and this just as so many of you are chiming in with your amazing efforts with kettle-bell swings.
Janet: It was 89 in the foothills west of Denver today and big thunderstorms have rumbled through almost every afternoon. I think that compared to what you've been dealing with, it will be a relief. Mornings are gorgeous: clear, cool in the high 60's. Safe travels.
Lisa: Oh wow! Lots to consider. Hope the solution will reveal itself.
Stay well, friends. We can do this.

Love y'all,

rori wish I could tell you I have experience with FSBO I would imagine you had better have a great real estate attorney if you are going that route. I would think any place in Hawaii would be easy to sell, paradise!!
Your farmers market choices sounded so delicious , I was green with envy. Lol

Rori, thanks for the info. Sounds heavenly to me.

Rori, we've had great experience buying and selling homes with a real estate agent in states where the agent handles all the paperwork and is the liaison with the title company that prepares the final documents. Since you are so far away from the property you are trying to sell, I think it would be a good idea to have an in town professional involved.
Tomorrow I see the chiropractor at 8:30 AM and my primary care doctor at 9:30. The nerve pain in my legs is worse than it was when I saw her in September and March. She had suggested acupuncture which was very pleasant but after nine visits there was no change and also that I should talk to her if I wanted to consider a second opinion. So, I don't know if I'm more worried about finding out that there's no solution or that there is a solution that I might not like. So I think I'll stay in the moment and enjoy my evening and the book I'll be reading at bedtime.
I've not done weight training in awhile because of the leg pain and many other things pulling on my time, but all the kettle bell talk got me inspired to today so I got out my dumb bell and did five sets of ten reps with the 22.5 lb dumbbell.
