One of the great secrets of adulthood that I learned from Gretchen Rubin is that what's fun for other people may not be fun for me and vice versa. That is so obvious as I read this thread..some are happy indoors, others outdoors, some love being with family and/or friends, others enjoy being alone....running, walking (with dogs or with friends or alone), biking, swimming, going to the gym, exercising at home....doing the same exercise, doing something different every day, cooking and eating interesting food or eating the same stuff every day. The trick is to find what you like and continue.

Grumble-grumble-gripe-gripe. I'm way behind on my "run 1000 miles this year" project. I haven't been exercising according to plan for quite some time now because I've had either guests or a horrendous cough or both. But today I am totally on my own and my cough is almost gone. So I decided to go out and run.
Now I'm the kind of person who's inspired by graphs and lists and statistics. When I got myself a GPS watch with a heartrate monitor, my daily exercise dose skyrocketed. Heading out for my jog today, I strapped on the heartrate monitor and pressed the button on my watch so it could look for satellites. It beeped and said "Low battery". No surprise, actually, because it charges when I connect it to download my run data, and I haven't run for weeks. So I went back inside to connect it to a power source... and found to my dismay that I must have left the charge cord back home in Longyearbyen!
Darn and blast! :noway: My first impulse was to abandon the whole project. Then I got a grip on myself. Okay, I can't track my exact distance, my speed, my calorie consumption... and without my watch I can't even time myself. But I can still run! I reasoned with myself, saying that if this is going to happen anywhere, this is absolutely the best place for it. I live at the end of the road and there are markers every half kilometer. All I have to do is run to the marker at half the distance I want to cover, turn around and run home again. Distance problem solved!
So I did it. I ran to the 3.5 km marker, turned around and ran home. Added 7 km to my spreadsheet and the graph updated itself nicely. I'm still way behind but it feels good to have broken with the inactivity trend.

Yeah, I went to church this morning. I sat in the back row so I wouldn't be noticed sitting down all the time. Sometimes I sang, I never sang all the verses in a song. But it was good. The special anthem the choir sang was wonderful and I think every choir member needs to occasionally hear their own choir to see what they are part of. makes you extra proud of it. And the addition of the children's and youth choir in their assigned parts sounded really nice. The kids out sang the youth.
Miriam, so sorry your daughter had a reaction but glad that her Mom was right on it. You would have thought that she would have shown some reaction to that before. As far as the Benadryl, my girls could never have any drugs in their possision, the school nurse had to administer it. I think I have that exact carpet on our wall. Our girls loved it. Since we are in a bi-level, the foyer wall is very tall and that rug on the wall fills it up quite nicely. We were known as the house with the carpet on the wall.
Welcome new ladies. Re, I look forward to how you describe us everyday.

Hello Ladies,
Lovely day caught up on housework , laundry , getting lunches ready for the week! Trying to discourage my grabbing fast food during my work hours! On Tuesday and Thursday we take our participants into the community! We do field trips all over and normally eat out! On those days the goal is to be mindful of my choices to choose the salad or grilled chicken on one bun or with lettuce wrap etc but on the other days we are in the center where bringing my healthy lunch I can.
I too love this Thread and the topic of aging! Getting my workout in is coming along but I know it isn't as long or much as should be! It is what I can do in my shape. But it has been consistent!
Food not bad but still trying to look at my eating in conjunction with where I am at now! I have a tendency to use techniques that worked when I was in my twenties! But many of my friends my age are going to low carb high protein! So I am looking at it! I think for me it is somewhere in the middle!

Joyce, I have four antique rugs on the wall. Inherited them from my aunt. I also have a large one that I have in the attic right now- too many animals to put it down. It is for a big room, not a standard size room. I have bare wood floors because of the animals.1

Katla~ Thanks for worrying about me friend, but the past is past. Husband goes onto this individuals site, along with checking on the "blank slate" one that I had, just to monitor. Truth be told, his threats were empty ones, and I am relieved to be rid of the whole situation. ((hugs ya)) its all roses from here on out.
Yesterday we all went to the movies and watched, "Suicide Squad". Good movie, but I came home audible, and visual overloaded. It's been awhile since I have watched a movie at a theater, and even my stomach hurt afterwards, (the rumbling of the stereo bass).
I am realizing that I truly am feeling old. I don't travel well, don't handle over-exercising well, my body gets cranky easily. I try to listen to my body, and realize my limitations. A lot to do with weight. My fantasy-land of being an active obese person is catching up with me. I have been over 200 lbs going on 30 yrs now. Moments of 180's here and there, but never staying for long. I used Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slim-fast Shakes, the Cambridge Diet shakes, a generic weight loss clinic, weight loss pills, and countless gym memberships that I would back out of. There is a moment when you realize that you have lived longer than you have left. So do I try to just live a healthy body, with the body I have been given? It doesn't mean I am giving up by any means. I just think a lot about making peace with my body. Does it mean that I am settling? Hell no! I just think the inner-turmoil gets to be so tiring. Anyway, those are my thoughts today.
Tomorrow we travel to Portland visiting our hospital OHSU. Husband shall be getting another ERCP ERCP is short for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. It is a procedure that looks at the bile ducts. It is done through an endoscope. Bile ducts are the tubes that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder (his gallbladder was removed when he rec'd a new liver), and small intestine. Anyway, I am hoping this procedure goes well, and there are no problems. If all goes well, the surgeons will change out the present stent in the duct and replace it with another one.
((((Group hugs all)))))))))))))))))

Just ordered another 12 Quest bars from Amazon. I like the Cinnamon Roll ones.
They are not perfect, but I always keep one in my purse to save me from a hypo when food is not appearing at its usual time or when I'm travelling and other choices would be worse. They are very satisfying, high protein, low sugar, for 170 calories. I make sure the pack is in the bedroom drawer so I can't steal one in the night if I'm sleepless. They are my least worst choice in difficult situations.
Just thought that might be helpful to some newbies. :flowerforyou:

PS Pip - Happy to help! DH has a very good friend who developed MS at 28. She is doing well, all considered.
PPS Becca I stopped going to normal cinemas a long time ago when I had to put ear plugs in my ears to be at all comfortable. Plus I can't stand the noise and smell of all the eating going on around me. What is wrong with people? Are they deaf? Are they constantly starving? Weird. Now I happily watch all my films at home and chew on a carrot. :laugh:4 -

I think I am about to enter a new phase in my life (empty nest) and realizing that I am getting older. I guess I will have to see how it feels, but like many of you have said "aging isn't for sissies!" I so appreciate all your wisdom Heather and Barbie about how staying positive and proactive, doing what you love is key in embracing life. The fact that so many of you are loving your 60s is making me feel way better!!
Good food choices and moving a little every day is key for me staying positive.

@klanders30 -- my daughter is 23 she is on the Autism scale! She will always need some assistance! Part of me get envious of empty nesters but same time There are group homes etc she can live at She isn't ready and I am not either! So it is a mixed bag! I am trying to stay positive and age gracefully at whatever place we are at! We need each other!
I enjoy reading how others are working through this time! Like @barbiecat
@Becca. In a couple of weeks heading to the Oregon coast for a little vacation!
Taking it one day at a time!

We've arrived!!! In our rental home. Finally have Internet. Goods arriving Tues morning. Hubs goes off to work for a few hours tomorrow morning. Just plain tired at this point in the journey. Going to be kind to myself tomorrow and veg before everything ramps up on Tues. Have 2 twin mattresses we picked up for our daybed and trundle and a card table and chairs borrowed from our realtor.
Feeling so very blessed.
I'll catch up tomorrow ladies. Thinking of y'all in blistering hot TX.

Kind of a quiet day here. DD is at a Farkle party. Went to church and have been reading and doing a little housework. Also did my kettlebell swings.
Melanie - Happy, happy birthday!!!
Michele - DD and I learned to play Mexican Train while my cousins were here. Fun game!
Miriam- So glad you were quick thinking and your DD is doing okay. I had to laugh at your picture of the kitties because my DD and I planted catnip in pots near our gazebo because it is supposed to repel mosquitoes. Have not had a bunch of kitties or mosquitoes show up so far.
Katla - I am with you on the lunging. I am always afraid I will trip myself with the line. The funny thing is if I try to lunge my mare with just the line she will simply stand and look at me. I have to hold the whip, not even wave it and then she will do what I ask but not if I don't hold the whip. I really prefer free lunging if I have a round pen. Are you watching Olympic horse events? I love the freestyle dressage done to music.
Welcome to all those who are new. Healing angels to those who need them and congratulations to those with victories. Sue in WA1 -
@Pipcd34, I am in Bellevue. I mostly ride on the Sammamish and Burke Gilman trails (which are paved) but next week we are venturing up to ride the Centennial Trail in Snohomish. Cycling for me is more recent thing. I've had my bike for 15 years, but sadly it was neglected for 5 years- until about a year ago. Wanting to change that!!1

Hi Gals,
Joyce – glad you got out and got some nurturing!
Michele – deep fried ice cream – they freeze the ice cream especially cold, cover it with corn flakes, drop it in and quickly pull it out, so the flakes are crispy – the outside slightly soft and the center frozen hard.
Miriam – how scary!!! So glad you knew what to do and just did it. You are the star mom! And congrats on the fitting shirt!
Re – no the chickens catch the mice or voles in their beaks, then throw them around and other chicks get involved and it looks like kids playing hot potato as they throw the rodent around… the rodents don’t make it.
Some one said chickens with eat the rodents… so I have not seen any evidence to this yet, but it has not been too long… I’m happy to let them.
Today was a sewing day, not working on embroidery but making outdoor cushions for a friend of the family, it is the worst project I have taken on in a long time..they are coming out really nice, but very time consuming, and fussy… there is pipping around the top and bottom of the cushions and getting it straight is a challenge… I have one or two more days of work on this before they are done. But am going to quit for tonight and will make dinner, run over and get some webbing I need from the fabric store and make chocolate covered strawberries, I’m bringing them to my hiking club and to camp for the staff tomorrow to celebrate my birthday… a chocolate covered berry is a much better choice than so many! And my boss has celiac so this works for all.

Cheri, Glad you made it to Texas safely. I hope all your belongings do, too. How hot is it in College Station?
Purl, Welcome! I'm glad you have a name to use other than Karen--there are so many of us! It's funny, it must have been a very popular name about 50-60 or so years ago. I don't know any Karens under 50. Like you, my bike has been sitting. Last year I had it cleaned, etc. Unlike you, I still haven't gotten on it. I have two excuses . First, I live at the bottom of a hill and would have to ride up the hill first thing. Seems a little intimidating after 10 or more years of not riding it. Second, I'm actually a little afraid I might fall. I had my hip replaced 3 months ago, and I'm still recovering. I'd hate to fall before everything is well healed and the muscles are strong.
Welcome to all others, too! This discussion helps me stay motivated. The women are kind, funny, interesting, wise, active, creative, hopeful, grateful, and survivors. But not perfect, very human and sometimes tired, stressed, worried, or grumpy. I've only been on for a couple of months, but it makes MFP much easier.
I got to the pool today to swim, and it was beautiful. Yesterday I went too late, and by the time I got there a thunderstorm was just about to dump it's load. And dump it did! So I went to the store to get a few things and got soaked between the car and the store. I could, of course, have waited out the worst of it in the car, but where's the fun in that?
I got up this morning a little sore from yesterday's kettle bell swings (went up to 20 lbs for three sets), especially in my lats and glutes. But while I felt my lats when I was swimming, the actual swimming is getting a bit easier. I no longer feel as if I'm thrashing around and never getting anywhere! Maybe by the end of August I'll actually enjoy the rhythm as I used to.

Barbie, so so true. It's what makes the world go ' round. Thanks for the lesson in diversity and the reminder to all of us to embrace it with understanding and consideration.
You're a very wise woman. I'm thankful you are willing to share with us.

My cleaning lady/neighbor was here today, she is a Physical Therapist and now studying to work with seniors to rehabilitate after surgery, stroke, heart problems etc. I showed her my new 25# kettlebell and demonstrated a few swings and sumo squats. She said my form was great and that I should be demonstrating to other seniors what you can achieve after knee replacement surgery. She suggested I go with her to some of her classes for seniors. I just might.
