I researched this on my own and came to my own opinion, I encourage anyone to do the same! It's a lifestyle, so everyone's will be different. It's like 95% water which is the "BEST" by your standards..so yea, it has some health benefits...it's called hydration.12 -

Do you even know what aspartame is?
Did you know that diet drinks are actually 99% water?
Can you post your diet soda research?
And, do you avoid DHMO?

i'm sure tons of people have been able to lose weight and keep drinking diet soda but it's soooooo bad for youuuuuuu. the chemicals in it seriously mess with your head and there have been a ton of studies to prove this. like, not just one fringe study with iffy results, but truly countless studies.
i used to be a hopeless diet coke addict and then i finally switched to seltzer. i realized that when i craved diet coke, the fizziness of seltzer totally did the trick. there are also tons of diet sodas that are sweetened with natural zero-calorie sweeteners like stevia instead of aspartame. or you can drink kombucha! it does have sugar but it's processed by yeast and bacteria so it doesn't cause the same insulin spike.1 -

There has literally been no studies that shows it's bad for you. 0. Could you point me to one?14 -

Do diet cokes hinder weight loss in any way other than make you hungrier ? They don't make me more hungry, even though there has been studies that say they do. I just want to know what do regular people who have lost weight think about them. Thanks !
No. They don't even make me hungrier. If I am feeling hungry, but know I am not really hungry, a Coke Zero will usually fill me up and satisfy me. I would love to see anything other than correlation studies that show that they do put on weight as my experience is they don't at all.7 -
Wow all the muscle bound guys HATE ME! lol I read like two books a few years ago. ( This wasn't the MAIN idea of them) seriously though are you saying water is not the best choice? why not just drink water? There are lots of opinions though. No need to get nasty, I'm only saying things I believe. That is the point of this right? To share ideas and opinions. Never imagined diet soda would become such defensive topic! And maybe the whole "chemicals beats calories" point didn't make sense to some, and it is not the healthiest idea! But it is a saying. Meaning if you are hungry, it will make you feel full for a short while. This is not specifically talking about diet coke, It is a very general saying . Do something to make the hunger pains go away for a bit.0

Yes, there are opinions, but there are facts as well. Your opinions just happen to be scientifically and factually WRONG.14

What studies are those that say diet coke makes one hungrier?
If diet cokes don't make you hungrier than you have nothing to worry about, because they have zero calories. Something that is zero calories will never make you gain weight.5 -

They are terrible for you an to me every calorie I hold very dear. If I can cut it out I do so. Lots of girls drink diet cokes though and hell they are skinny, Chemicals beats calories they say!
Seriously.....what?
This is silly talk.
If it's not, please post those peer reviewed studies where you got this information from.
I'm glad you hold every calorie dear to you, but......diet coke has no calories.10 -

Diet drinks with artificial sweeteners don't increase my appetite--and neither does gum. Simple "white" carbs (pizza, cookies, french fries, white pasta covered in red sauce, fast food joints, etc.), on the other hand, DO make me want to eat more and more in one sitting...so the trick for me is to buy them in small quantities (small bag of doritos vs the $4 bag or vending machine oreos rather than the full package from store)4

And avocados do this too me. I get ravenous around them. Have to only buy them as I need them or I would be a blimp.5 -

If anyone has a lumpy butt, it is because they are eating too much and not doing the kinds of exercise that reduce fat and butt lumpiness. Perhaps you should read the five billion other Diet Coke threads one MFP where much of this lumpy butt type woo has been thoroughly debunked. It will open your eyes. If people seem jaded, it is because we repeatedly see people with a couple of posts say exactly the same thing, time and again, with no foundation in actual science. I agree water is better than both diet and regular soda, primarily for the PROVEN detrimental effect it can have on tooth enamel and one's pocketbook. (The former is easily addressed with a swig of water...the latter is just annoying). But, that opens of a whole other realm of potential zany fear-mongering, from fluoride to Flint. Pick your poison.13 -

What worked??
If you don't like diet coke or it doesn't work for you in any way that's fine. I don't think anybody disputes that it could give individuals bloating or headaches or cravings or any other subjective (possibly placebo) effects. ( just like any other substance could )
It is only when subjective personal experiences get translated to blanket It does that to everyone statements or to factually unproven statements like it is toxic or tricks your body or causes cancer and Alzheimer's that people object.

I'm not a muscle bound guy but I have to say...
Diet books and blog posts written to push a particular agenda can have some really strong statements which can sound very believable if you aren't well versed in science. They talk about scary sounding chemicals, list numerous medical conditions that have been "associated with" consumption of something or other, and generally try to convince people that things that have time and again been shown in peer reviewed scientific studies to be harmless, are in fact not. They rely heavily on correlation and generalizations.
Water is a good choice for beverage consumption. That doesn't change the fact that there is nothing harmful about diet soda, and in fact, it is 98% water. People choose beverages besides water for all sorts of reasons (taste, caffeine, alcohol, etc) and while I drink water all day long, I love having a Diet Coke too.
I didn't frankly understand the "chemicals beats calories" thing since literally everything we eat is made of chemicals.
You seem to have a lot of "beliefs" which may have propagated out of your reading, whether it be these diet books or memes posted on social media sites. Those generally are not good sources of reliable scientific info, and while yes you are entitled to your own beliefs, you aren't entitled to your own reality. And the reality is that nothing you've said about diet soda has been proven to be true in actual scientific studies..

Would like link to one of these countless studies please.
I never drank diet sodas until I started trying to lose weight - prior to that, when I drank sodas it was regular soda.
Then I switched to Pepsi Max/diet coke about 3 years ago - my head seems the same, haven't noticed any messing being done to it.
So would like link to see what is supposed to have happened to me.

I'm ok with diet soda. I don't always get a taste for it - but maybe have 2 or 3 a week. Been like that for the last 10 years. (I am down about 90 lbs in the last 3 years)1

Have you by any chance been involved with "It Works!" ? This sounds just like the lecture I was given when I went to one of their conferences (before I saw the light and quit). It made me quite nervous about aspartame, until I talked to a friend of mine who is a chemist and he assured me that the amount of formaldehyde produced is minuscule - plus your body produces small amounts all by itself anyway. I did a little research of my own and was reassured.
I don't drink diet sodas anyway because I just don't like the taste of the artificial sweeteners, but I don't avoid them out of fear. (I did try a can of Zevia when I found one, to see what that was like, and although the taste was okay I didn't feel it was good enough to justify the high cost.)
Life is short. Diet soda is mostly water. If you like it, drink it.
For a scientific viewpoint, read this excellent post from @Aaron_K123 - http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary/p1
Or this: http://www.andeal.org/topic.cfm?cat=4089
Note in particular this section in the first paragraph:
"For example, a serving of non-fat milk provides about six to nine times more phenylalanine and 13 times more aspartic acid than the same amount of beverage sweetened with aspartame. A serving of tomato juice provides about four to six times more methanol than the same amount of aspartame-sweetened beverage."
I sincerely hope you avoid milk and tomato juice if you're that concerned! Plus, many of the articles I just skimmed say you ingest more formaldehyde via the air you breathe than any other method (even if you don't actually work with the stuff), so you might want to think about that.
