Quick check in to catch up on reading and answer Meg's question. Yes, I wear my wild leggings. I wear them under dresses to substitute teach and to church, I wear them with a nice tunic to the grocery store, Doctor, errands and casual things like Bridge, and I wear them with tunic tee-shirts and sweatshirts around the house. I wear the solid colored ones just like tights under tighter dresses and skirts. And I wear them under regular wind suit pants as a layer of warmth when walking outside. I like for the tunics to hit at least mid-thigh for modesty's sake, but I have been known to wear them with a regular cotton tee to the gym to workout when it is cold. I have not and probably never will wear them in the pulpit. Maybe the solids under a dress, but not the prints.2

Hi Gals,
Rita – sorry to hear your family is being yucky right now… mine is almost always yucky too… I have determined that a friend or a “paid professional” is the best way to go… I see Lanette has the same idea
Are you DH and CooCoo’s Nest going to travel around the US? I’ll research a campground for you here if you want to come to Northern California and visit….
Allie – tea pots and tea cosy? Is it your birthday?
Karen in VA - glad you got to hold Olivia and that she is showing improvement – I’m sure you and your partner being there was a huge emotional support
Heather – thanks for the penny update and to any American friends who don’t know fortnight – it’s 14 days…
Someone asked what I had been wondering “Where’s Sherry?” So I called and left a message I’ll let you know what I hear.
Barbie asked me about recent books… It is a goal to write a short book review each month… so I have 2 first is January’s as I did not do that one…
Fly Girl by Sherri Smith - This is classified as a young adult book and was picked by a neighboring town to be the book the town would read for Feb. It was really good, a historical fiction based on the experiences of an African American girl joining the WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots) in WWll. A quick read, well written, gives insight to the times and what life was like for an African American in the south.
February
Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett – this is the March book for my book club. A few months back we read Pillars of the Earth by K. Follett and I disliked it as I felt that K. Follett just re-arranged the dictionary, there were 5-7 sentences for every 1 sentence needed…way to wordy. So I was not looking forward to Eye of the Needle..BUT I was pleasantly surprised.
Eye of the Needle is a spy novel, with some twists and turns, set in Europe in WWll and I found it to be a page turner… - I don’t want to give too much away, but it includes a strong female character.
I have scheduled dinner with my DN (debonair nephew) who’s dad has colon cancer for Tuesday night – that will be a nice time to chat about all that is going on.
February Goals:
Write Christmas letter, and have all cards ready to send by Dec1…this was for nov. but still working on it. Jan. still working on this….**** GET THIS DONE*******
Read and report on a book –
Log everyday to the best I can, over if need be.
11,000 + steps everyday –
Work on water consumption –
Lunch with Kyle -
Smiles.
Kim from N. California

Having a bit of insomnia, so thought I would check in. There is always alot to read, I lIke that abut this thread. In reading your posts, I feel as though I'm getting to know some of you in just the past few days
About me, I hope this isn't too much info on such short acquaintance. Not sure when I'll have the energy to get on the thread again- it takes a lot to read all the posts! How many of you are there anyway?
I'm 55 and live with my husband of 12 happy years but we've been a couple for almost 20 years (hubby #2, a very good man -complete opposite of husband 1). DH (dearest husband) and I met in college in our 30s as non traditional students both of us making life changes by finishing our degrees that had been postponed in our 20s for different reasons. His health has deteriorated over the past 3 years (mine too, but not to the same extent), so we aren't as active as a couple as I would like, but I find some things to do outside the house, wit girlfriends. His new sedentary lifestyle is rubbing off on me though, which is depressing, which causes me to read more, which results in more sitting around...
We have 3 acres and a 5 bedroom 'older' house - that is starting to fall apart (DH is not willing to downsize or pay someone else to provide upkeep), so in nice weather we do get busy working/mending outside (but then he suffers from the exertion which leads to sitting around and more things falling apart). Inside, we use a lot of duct tape (only sort of kidding about the tape).
Life is good except when it's not.
I'm a child welfare social worker, but have recently become a supervisor, so no more direct service - I miss that. I'm a good teacher and coach, so my employer loves me and the newer employees do too, but 1 employee is a former co-worker and she doesnt like that I now supervise her and tries to undermine and sabotage me at every turn (she wanted the job as sup). So, work is very stressful and full of talking, teaching, modeling good practice, keeping an especially keen eye on that one pesky employee, etc. When I get home, it's SO EASY to just read or watch TV rather than go out with friends.
I exercise on a stationary bike or elliptical 3 to 5 mornings a week and sometimes take walks at break/lunch, but will rarely exercise after work. Too tired by the time I get home.
I have a 32 year old daughter (DDD dear difficult daughter). I love her, but she is more like her father (husband 1, not a good man). She will not hold a job for more than day or two, has been incarcerated off on since age 18 (but not, thank God within the past 2 years- finally signs of accepting some responsibility for her own actions ), and tells me I just don't understand her. She's right, I don't understand. Why would anyone want to live like that? She thinks I should continue to support her because she's my little princess; I won't - I can't - she's supposed to be a grown up now. I do have her on my cell phone plan, as a tenuous thread in staying connected with her (since I'm paying for her phone, I always have her phone number- which she changes every month or so as she restarts her life with new 'friends'). When she is doing well, I'm cautiously optimistic. She's (we've) had some real tragedies occur in the past year, but the good news is that she has stayed out of jail throughout the hard times this time(which, in the past, going to jail seems to have been her way of resetting when life wasn't going as planned).
Enough for now, I just might be able to get back to sleep for an hour before my alarm goes off
Have a great day everyone
queene in PA2 -
Queene- Sounds like you have more than enough stressors in your life. I think a lot of women find their husbands slow down and get set in their ways as they get older. We have to "manage" them. My husband is susceptible to having an idea planted in passing and being allowed to ponder it without pressure. Then he thinks it is his own idea!
I have a depressed, unemployed son who is obese. Not a good combination. He has two dogs which keep him alive.
Joyce - Sorry to hear about your sister. ((((HUGS))))
Toni or Meg - Sorry, couldn't work out who it was - so sorry to hear about your husband's troubles. Depression is no joke.
Hope that all those who are waiting for things to mend have them mended. (((HUGS)))
NY Karen - Bon Voyage! (They speak French as their second language in Morocco )
Second viewing today. I wish I could get more excited.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx2 -
Morning beauties:
Re glad things have settled down and thanks for the bean info
KJ that is so funny! When I lie, it is usually a conscious under estimation of the portions lol!
SueBDew so jealous - would love to be in my yard right now on a warm day but as true Canadian, when the weather warms up, I will probably complain about that too
Barbie wow that is a lot of minutes, great job!
DJ Hey, hope you are doing well.
Queens Thanks for sharing your interesting story. I am a social worker turned manager as well. I manage a medical forensic program in a hospital. We work a lot with child welfare. You have a very challenging job and I so respect what you do So sorry to hear about the challenges with your daughter, that must be very hard on you.
I am happy and a little anxious at the same time. The daughters and one boyfriend come home tonight and they never stop eating and of course, they are all thin, in great physical shape and eat whatever they want. I remind them occasionally that I am their future and those habits may eventually lead them to the path I am now on. They just love when I say that. The difference with them and when I was young is that they are much more health conscious. They all work out hard every day, make better food choices but they still are constantly eating. Luckily, I won't be here during the day and will try to do very well during the day to allow a bigger or more interesting meal at night. But I will need help. I definitely eat more and make poorer choices when there are others around not watching their calories like I do. Why is it always so hard (she whines like a two year old) lol!
For those who need a kick in the ---, a hug, a prayer, some love; sending it all to you with deep respect and grace. Have a great day everyone

Heather UK I like the way you think. I will plant some ideas in DH
My DDD has 2 dogs, too. One lives with me (he is a cute Shiba inu who, she claims, is too 'hyper' to stay with her -since she crashes on friends' sofas without a place of her own) and the other is a small pomeranian that lives in my daughter's purse (at least that's where the pup is on the occasions they both come home for a visit). I love the shiba, but after my dear doggie of 12 years passed 2 years ago, we decided no more dogs for a while so that we could have freedom from the responsibility. ..1 -

Kim from N CA, spoke to DH and Northern Cali may be our winter home next year! We are wanting to explore the country.
Thanks for all the support on our adventures on the Cuckoo's Nest!
I looked into professional forwarding, but can't justify the cost for mostly junk mail. All my important mail comes via email and pay everything online. My bro can handle what little mail we get until we decide what to do.
Signed buyer agreement and disclosures with seller yesterday, so this is moving right along.
Dropped off 2 bags at Wellsprings but no purging. Went shopping to get out of the house. Looking for a bike rack for 2 bikes at a reasonable price. Looked at 2 but not sure if we want one to go into the hitch on the RV or attach to the car by straps. Suggestions?

Sarah from Ontario: I'm so happy that you were able to find positive ways to get through your stressful day. WTG!!!
MegBlair: (((HUGS))) to you and your husband. I hope you're both able to work through your anxiousness &/or depression.
Beth: I'm sorry you're in the position of having to replace your son's health aide. Good luck finding just the right person. :flowerforyou:
KJLamore: Fudging your logging either way just messes up your own records. People don't typically monitor what we are recording. You're trying to fool a computer program.
Pip: I don't remember worrying about my age when I turned 50 but I had the three f's back then--fat, female, & fifty. I am forever grateful for finding MFP.
Joyce: I'll add my prayers for your sister to yours. (((HUGS))) Let us know how she does.
Lenora: My husband worked his way through college as a butcher. As I understand it, salt pork can be the same cut as bacon but it doesn't have the same spices in it. The salt pork I've actually seen looks like it has less lean in it.
Barbie: Your level of aerobic activity is amazing. I am always impressed & feel like a piker by comparison. :flowerforyou:
Marni: I love your ticker--and the progress you are making!
p67atl: Welcome to a great group. My advice is simple--let MFP set your calorie goals, log every bite and swallow & move more. Measure your food portions using a scale or measuring cups and do whatever sorts of exercise you really enjoy. Some women swim, some ride bikes, run, or walk. I love yoga, walking, bike riding & horseback riding. I have found that if I enjoy my exercise I am more likely to do it. Stop in often to give and get support.
DJ: Thanks for thinking of me. No work with Arrow yesterday. The stable is having water problems and has to get a new well dug. They are borrowing water for the horses from neighbors & are full up on things to worry about. The well diggers did not show up yesterday as planned. I hope today is a better day for them. My extra time with Arrow can wait for now. :flowerforyou:
Kim: You are the best Auntie around. Your nephew is lucky to have you. A neighbor of ours had to have surgery for colon cancer a few years ago. He has an ostomy bag that he wears outside his body beneath his shirt and has gone on with his life. He has fun, goes out to eat, works... I hope that your nephew's dad does as well.
Queene in PA: Welcome to a great group.
Heather: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your second viewing. :flowerforyou:
Sarah, Ontario: You can do this. You have a good strategy in mind. I chose portion control as my main diet strategy because of my longish list of things that I can't eat. It worked for me. The core of success for me is to move more and log every bite and swallow. It works but not quickly.
Gotu52: I love the Canadian Uber. Where can I go to get a ride?
Yoga today! And this is my favorite teacher.

Kate UK – From the looks of that cut of meat; I’d probably say that I ‘think’ it looks like a boneless pork chop. Would not boil it; but, would pan fry it in just a touch of olive oil. Some would probably dredge it in egg and flour before frying it in a pan. It also looks like a smoked piece of ham; which I would bake in oven like at Thanksgiving, and cut it to make sandwiches for a few days. Or eat cold or hot.
My husband would have to have the ‘fat’ cut off to eat it.
Of course, 'country ham' is different than any other; it is 'aged' and usually a slab with just an 'eye' of bone in it; usually redder in color than any other piece of pork. Would pan fry it; then make 'red eye' gravy - pouring in coffee into the pan with the bits on bottom of pan after frying it and stirring. Then pull the pieces of ham apart, put them on a biscuit which I had poured the 'red eye' gravy over. Good old Southern tradition. Very salty.
Katla – If I use salt pork, to cook collard greens (or turnips or any kind of “greens”) … I might cut off the rind; and pan fry it as the salt would have been drawn out of it to flavor the greens. Normally, I don’t care for it. I’d probably be more likely to get the butcher to cut a couple of pieces of pork to put in it and cut it up in chunks.
I will cook a ‘smoked’ ham for Thanksgiving and then use the bone to make stock for soup. I’ve done a turkey bone; but, way too many small bits of bone and I have never liked the stock in any type of ‘bean’ soup. It is ok to make soups with rice of parts of the turkey with noodles or dumplings. There again, would have to drain the stock and only put in the larger chunks in the soup. My DMnL would take the turkey bone; boil it down for the stock, take the main carcass out and put in rice or noodles in it; always was the one at the table who bit down on a piece of bone. I'd spoon through it and try to get most of the bones out of the soup.
When Nannie-L used to make chicken and dumplings, I cannot remember where she'd get the 'chicken' from; but, not much used; just remember 'chicken or not' I loved the noodles. Only place I have found that come close is at "Cracker Barrel." DDnL#1 makes her 'chicken and dumplings' using 'noodles'. That is more like chicken and rice to me. Had to laugh at DDnL#2 who made the thick dumplings and when DYS tasted it he said, 'this is the worst I've ever had'. Hurt her feelings, so she did not cook for 3 days. I asked her 'how' she made her dumplings, thick. I told her that was the way I did mine, so I was surprised he did not like them.

Oh my goodness! I'm only 1256 posts behind. YIKES! I've been on the road for work and have been not taking very good care of myself. No time for "me" stuff when I'm on a go-live project at a hospital. Therefore, I haven't been able to keep up on here. I was eating crappy fast food. Not taking "me" time to rejuvenate and de-stress. Ended up in the ER yesterday with chest pains. I'm fine, but it was a real big warning sign that I need to do some soul searching as to how I am going to move forward in this job. It's just getting too stressful for me. Last time I was this stressed from my job, I ended up with Stage III breast cancer. When I start getting chest pains, something needs to change. I need to at least have some boundaries where when I go home from work, I do not bring work home with me. I have been working day and night for months. I'm just not as young as the others on my team, and I just no longer want to deal with this high stress level.
Anyway, sorry for going off on a little rant there.
I gained 2 lbs and today I am getting back in the saddle again. Weighing, measuring and journaling every bite. I really need to MAKE MYSELF hydrate with water. I am really retaining water right now. Fingers are like little pork sausages. Sure do wish I would win that lottery so I could retire with my husband!
I will try to take some time later to read at least the most current pages to see what's new with everyone. Just wanted to pop in and say hello and that I'm thinking of you all!

February Goals:
1. Weight less at the end of the month
2. Begin exercising regularly 3 days a week
3. More veggies
4. Begin meditating and finding ways to get some quiet "me" time
5. HYDRATE WITH WATER!!!!
6. Work on ridding self of anxiety

Good morning-
Sarah - picture the "you" you want to be. Drink tea or sparkling water when they are munching. You can do this! Love the moose uber!
Beth - sorry your hubby is hurting. So many of our DH's are facing health issues.
Carey - really like your thought for the day. It's a really good one.
Mary - when I grow up I want to be like you!!!!!
SueBDew - My yard needs work. Are you coming to Nashville in the near future???
I am missing Sherry's funnies. I hope she returns soon.
Went to the reunion breakfast and was pleased to see my snowbird friend back in town. He came back to help out his granddaughter who is a single mom. He used to bounce around from California to Pennsylvania, Florida and Nashville - from kid to kid. It is a chosen life style. Everything he owns packs in his car and he's off to where ever he wishes. Sometimes I envy him. He seems to have a lot of wonderful family!
I didn't get to see my son and family because they were at a Farmer's Market Conference. They are in charge of Nashville's largest neighborhood farmer's market from May to Oct. (all volunteer and a great deal of work for my DDIL). I swear, they are always so busy I feel abandoned. I am so happy for those of you who have close relationships with your kids and grandkids.
About turning 50- it was no big deal to me. The birthday that really got me was 35. I felt like I should have the perfect, stable life by then - 2 kids, career, successful husband, home with the picket fence. At that point in my life I had so much regret. Sooooo much better place now! Living contentedly with my reality, doing what I can to change me........
